Zwitterionic ring-opening polymerization for the facile, efficient and versatile grafting of functional polyethers onto graphene sheets

[2+1] Cycloadditions Modulate the Hydrophobicity of Ni-N4 Single-Atom Catalysts for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction

Microenvironment regulation of M-N4 single-atom catalysts (SACs) is a promising way to tune their catalytic properties toward the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction. However, strategies that can effectively introduce functional groups around the M-N4 sites through strong covalent bonding and under mild reaction conditions are highly desired. Taking the hydrophilic Ni-N4 SAC as a representative, we report herein a [2+1] cycloaddition reaction between Ni-N4 and in situ generated difluorocarbene (F2C:), and enable the surface fluorocarbonation of Ni-N4, resulting in the formation of a super-hydrophobic Ni-N4-CF2 catalyst. Meanwhile, the mild reaction conditions allow Ni-N4-CF2 to inherit both the electronic and structural configuration of the Ni-N4 sites from Ni-N4. Enhanced electrochemical CO2-to-CO Faradaic efficiency above 98 % is achieved in a wide operating potential window from -0.7 V to -1.3 V over Ni-N4-CF2. In situ spectroelectrochemical studies reveal that a highly hydrophobic microenvironment formed by the -CF2- group repels asymmetric H-bonded water at the electrified interface, inhibiting the hydrogen evolution reaction and promoting CO production. This work highlights the advantages of [2+1] cycloaddition reactions on the covalent modification of N-doped carbon-supported catalysts.

Peptide-Based Electrospun Fibers: Current Status and Emerging Developments

Electrospinning is a well-known, straightforward, and versatile technique, widely used for the preparation of fibers by electrifying a polymer solution. However, a high molecular weight is not essential for obtaining uniform electrospun fibers; in fact, the primary criterion to succeed is the presence of sufficient intermolecular interactions, which function similar to chain entanglements. Some small molecules able to self-assemble have been electrospun from solution into fibers and, among them, peptides containing both natural and non-natural amino acids are of particular relevance. Nowadays, the use of peptides for this purpose is at an early stage, but it is gaining more and more interest, and we are now witnessing the transition from basic research towards applications. Considering the novelty in the relevant processing, the aim of this review is to analyze the state of the art from the early 2000s on. Moreover, advantages and drawbacks in using peptides as the main or sole component for generating electrospun nanofibers will be discussed. Characterization techniques that are specifically targeted to the produced peptide fibers are presented.

Polymerization of Polar Monomers Mediated by Main-Group Lewis Acid-Base Pairs

The development of new or more sustainable, active, efficient, controlled, and selective polymerization reactions or processes continues to be crucial for the synthesis of important polymers or materials with specific structures or functions. In this context, the newly emerged polymerization technique enabled by main-group Lewis pairs (LPs), termed as Lewis pair polymerization (LPP), exploits the synergy and cooperativity between the Lewis acid (LA) and Lewis base (LB) sites of LPs, which can be employed as frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), interacting LPs (ILPs), or classical Lewis adducts (CLAs), to effect cooperative monomer activation as well as chain initiation, propagation, termination, and transfer events. Through balancing the Lewis acidity, Lewis basicity, and steric effects of LPs, LPP has shown several unique advantages or intriguing opportunities compared to other polymerization techniques and demonstrated its broad polar monomer scope, high activity, control or livingness, and complete chemo- or regioselectivity, as well as its unique application in materials chemistry. These advances made in LPP are comprehensively reviewed, with the scope of monomers focusing on heteroatom-containing polar monomers, while the polymerizations mediated by main-group LAs and LBs separately that are most relevant to the LPP are also highlighted or updated. Examples of applying the principles of the LPP and LP chemistry as a new platform for advancing materials chemistry are highlighted, and currently unmet challenges in the field of the LPP, and thus the suggested corresponding future research directions, are also presented.
