A Review on Ionic Liquid Gas Separation Membranes

Ionic liquids have attracted the attention of the industry and research community as versatile solvents with unique properties, such as ionic conductivity, low volatility, high solubility of gases and vapors, thermal stability, and the possibility to combine anions and cations to yield an almost endless list of different structures. These features open perspectives for numerous applications, such as the reaction medium for chemical synthesis, electrolytes for batteries, solvent for gas sorption processes, and also membranes for gas separation. In the search for better-performing membrane materials and membranes for gas and vapor separation, ionic liquids have been investigated extensively in the last decade and a half. This review gives a complete overview of the main developments in the field of ionic liquid membranes since their first introduction. It covers all different materials, membrane types, their preparation, pure and mixed gas transport properties, and examples of potential gas separation applications. Special systems will also be discussed, including facilitated transport membranes and mixed matrix membranes. The main strengths and weaknesses of the different membrane types will be discussed, subdividing them into supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), poly(ionic liquids) or polymerized ionic liquids (PILs), polymer/ionic liquid blends (physically or chemically cross-linked 'ion-gels'), and PIL/IL blends. Since membrane processes are advancing as an energy-efficient alternative to traditional separation processes, having shown promising results for complex new separation challenges like carbon capture as well, they may be the key to developing a more sustainable future society. In this light, this review presents the state-of-the-art of ionic liquid membranes, to analyze their potential in the gas separation processes of the future.

One-pot synthesis of poly(ionic liquid)s with 1,2,3-triazolium-based backbones via clickable ionic liquid monomers

Clickable α-azide-ω-alkyne ionic liquid monomers were developed and subsequently applied to the one-pot synthesis of ionically conducting poly(ionic liquid)s with 1,2,3-triazolium-based backbones through a click chemistry strategy. This approach does not require the use of solvents, polymerisation mediators, or catalysts. The obtained poly(ionic liquid)s were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and impedance spectroscopy analysis. Moreover, these poly(ionic liquid)s were cross-linked via N-alkylation with a dianion quarternizing agent to achieve enhanced ionic conductivity and mechanical strength. The resulting free-standing films showed a Young's modulus up to 4.8 MPa and ionic conductivities up to 4.60 × 10-8 S cm-1 at 30 °C. This facile synthetic strategy has the potential to expand the availability of poly(ionic liquid)s and promote the development of functional materials.

Hydrazine-Enabled One-Step Synthesis of Metal Nanoparticle-Functionalized Gradient Porous Poly(ionic liquid) Membranes

In this communication, a one-step synthetic route is reported toward free-standing metal-nanoparticle-functionalized gradient porous polyelectrolyte membranes (PPMs). The membranes are produced by soaking a glass-plate-supported blend film that consists of a hydrophobic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL), poly(acrylic acid), and a metal salt, into an aqueous hydrazine solution. Upon diffusion of water and hydrazine molecules into the blend film, a phase separation process of the hydrophobic PIL and an ionic crosslinking reaction via interpolyelectrolyte complexation occur side by side to form the PPM. Simultaneously, due to the reductive nature of hydrazine, the metal salt inside the polymer blend film is reduced in situ by hydrazine into metal nanoparticles that anchor onto the PPM. The as-obtained hybrid porous membrane is proven functional in the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol. This one-step method to grow metal nanoparticles and gradient porous membranes can simplify future fabrication processes of multifunctional PPMs.

Photoinitiated Copper(I) Catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition Reaction for Ion Conductive Networks

The photoinitiated copper(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (photo-CuAAC) is a 'click' reaction that enables spatially and temporally controlled polymerizations. The solvent-less photopolymerization of multi-functional azide and cationic alkyne monomers results in the rapid formation of a charged polymer network. Full conversion of these monomers is achieved within 30 minutes under mild, blue-light irradiation conditions (470 nm light at 30 mW/cm2). The modulus of the material is readily tuned by controlling the ratio of di- and tri-functional alkyne monomers. Facile exchange of the hydrophobic bistriflimide counterion for a hydroxide anion yields an ion conductive polymer network with photopatternable charged regions. The spatiotemporal nature of the ionic photo-CuAAC reaction coupled with the chemical stability and mechanical flexibility suggests this chemistry is a facile and novel approach for ion-containing material synthesis (e.g., alkaline fuel cells components).

Covalently Crosslinked 1,2,3-Triazolium-Containing Polyester Networks: Thermal, Mechanical, and Conductive Properties

Azide-alkyne "click" cyclization was used to prepare a series of polymerizable acetoacetate monomers containing a 1,2,3-trizolium ionic liquid group. The monomers were subsequently polymerized using base-catalyzed Michael addition chemistry, producing a series of covalently crosslinked 1,2,3-triazolium poly(ionic liquid) (TPIL) networks. Structure-activity relationships were conducted to gauge how synthetic variables, such as counteranion ([Br], [NO3], [BF4], [OTf], and [NTf2]), and crosslink density (acrylate/acetoacetate ratio) effected thermal, mechanical, and conductive properties. TPIL networks were found to exhibit ionic conductivities in the range of 10-6-10-9 S/cm (30 °C, 30% relative humidity), as determined from dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, despite their highly crosslinked nature. Temperature-dependent conductivities demonstrate a dependence on polymer glass transition, with free-ion concentrations impacted by various ions' Lewis acidity/basicity and ion mobilities impacted by freely mobile anion size.

Progress on Catalytic Systems Used in Click Polymerization

Click polymerization, a powerful synthetic technique to construct polymers with unique structures and advanced functions, is of crucial importance in the areas of polymer and material sciences. A variety of click polymerizations such as azide-alkyne, thiol-yne, amino-yne, and hydroxyl-yne reactions have been established, wherein the catalytic systems play an indispensable role in realizing these highly practical reactions based on triple-bond building blocks, as they directly influence the efficiencies of the click polymerizations and the performances of the resultant polymers. The vital employment of catalysts is reviewed and their developments from innovative discoveries to the eminent position are outlined. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also briefly discussed.

Ionic liquid syntheses via click chemistry: expeditious routes toward versatile functional materials

The application of click reaction (e.g. CuAAC, thiol–X, oxime formation and nucleophilic ring opening) has recently begun to draw attention for efficient and robust synthesis of new functional ionic liquids, requiring minimal purification.

Poly(ionic liquid)-based polyurethanes having imidazolium, ammonium, morpholinium or pyrrolidinium cations

The synthesis of cationic polyelectrolytes based on condensation-derived backbone is rarely performed due to the difficulty obtaining of the respective ionic monomers in high purity. Despite such an approach is favorable as it results in ionic polymers with well-defined chemical structure and ionic group distribution. In this work two efficient methods are presented for the synthesis of ionic diols in high purity, namely the technique with pyranyl protection of OH-groups and the direct quaternization of tertiary amine alcohols. Applying these methods five novel ionic diols bearing various cations, namely, 1,1-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)pyrrolidin-1-ium bromide, 4,4-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)morpholin-4-ium bromide, N, N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-methylethanammonium, 1,1′-(pentane-1,5-diyl)bis(1-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyrrolidin-1-ium) dibromide, and 3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-(5-(3-(3-hydroxypropyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium-1-yl)pentyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium dibromide, were synthesized in high purity and high yields. The tin(II) mediated solution polycondensation of ionic diols with commercial hexamethylene diisocyanate or 4,4′-methylenebis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) resulted in a series of ionic, high molecular weight ( Mw = 2.3 × 104 −8.0 × 104) polyurethanes (PUs). The influence of various reaction parameters including reaction temperature and time, catalyst concentration and solvent nature upon PUs molecular weight was investigated. After the exchange of bromide to (CF3SO2)2N- anion the obtained poly(ionic liquid)s exhibit high thermal stability with onset mass loss above 225°C and demonstrate glass transition temperatures in the wide range from −22°C to 76°C depending on the nature of ionic diol used. Ionic PUs present excellent solubility in most organic solvents and are capable to form tough, flexible films with tensile strength up to 29.7 MPa.

Cationic and dicationic 1,2,3-triazolium-based poly(ethylene glycol ionic liquid)s

We report the synthesis and in-depth characterization of two novel poly(ionic liquid)s having poly(ethylene glycol) main chains and side chains having either one or two 1,2,3-triazolium cations with triethylene glycol spacers and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide counter anion(s).

1,2,3-Triazolium-based linear ionic polyurethanes

We report the synthesis and detailed characterization of a series of ionic polyurethanes issued from the polyaddition of a 1,2,3-triazolium-functionalized diol monomer having a bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide counter-anion with four aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic commercial diisocyanates.
