Gradient terpolymers with long ε-caprolactone rich sequence derived from propylene oxide, CO2, and ε-caprolactone catalyzed by zinc glutarate

Block Copoly (Ester-Carbonate) Electrolytes for LiFePO4|Li Batteries with Stable Cycling Performance

To address the challenges posed by the narrow oxidation decomposition potential window and the characteristic of low ionic conductivity at room temperature of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), carbon dioxide (CO2), epichlorohydrin (PO), caprolactone (CL), and phthalic anhydride (PA) were employed in synthesizing di-block copolymer PCL-b-PPC and PCL-b-PPCP. The carbonate and ester bonds in PPC and PCL provide high electrochemical stability, while the polyether segments in PPC contribute to the high ion conductivity. To further improve the ion conductivity, we added succinonitrile as a plasticizer to the copolymer and used the copolymer to assemble lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with LiFePO4 as the cathode. The LiFePO4/SPE/Li battery assembled with PCL-b-PPC electrolyte exhibited an initial discharge-specific capacity of 155.5 mAh·g-1 at 0.5 C and 60 °C. After 270 cycles, the discharge-specific capacity was 140.8 mAh·g-1, with a capacity retention of 90.5% and an average coulombic efficiency of 99%, exhibiting excellent electrochemical performance. The study establishes the design strategies of di-block polymer electrolytes and provides a new strategy for the application of LMBs.

Toward Fully Controllable Monomers Sequence: Binary Organocatalyzed Polymerization from Epoxide/Aziridine/Cyclic Anhydride Monomer Mixture

The sequence of monomers within a polymer chain plays a pivotal role in determining the physicochemical properties of the polymer. In the copolymerization of two or more monomers, the arrangement of monomers within the resulting polymer is primarily dictated by the intrinsic reactivity of the monomers. Precisely controlling the monomer sequence in copolymerization, particularly through the manipulation of catalysts, is a subject of intense interest and poses significant challenges. In this study, we report the catalyst-controlled copolymerization of epoxides, N-tosyl aziridine (TAz), and cyclic anhydrides. To achieve this, a binary catalyst system comprising a Lewis acid, triethylborane, and Brønsted base, t-BuP1, was utilized. This system was utilized to regulate the selectivity between two catalytic reactions: ring-opening alternating copolymerization (ROAC) of epoxides/cyclic anhydrides and ROAC of TAz/cyclic anhydrides. Changing the catalyst ratio made it possible to continuously modulate the resulting poly(ester-amide ester) from ABA-type real block copolymers to gradient, random-like, reversed gradient, and reversed BAB-type block-like copolymers. A range of epoxides and anhydrides was investigated, demonstrating the versatility of this polymerization system. Additionally, density functional theory calculations were conducted to enhance our mechanistic understanding of the process. This synthetic method not only provides a versatile means for producing copolymers with comparable chemical compositions but also facilitates the exploration of the intricate relationship between monomer sequences and the resultant polymer properties, offering valuable insights for advancements in polymer science.

A Novel Gel Polymer Electrolyte by Thiol-Ene Click Reaction Derived from CO2-Based Polycarbonate for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Here, we describe the synthesis of a CO2-based polycarbonate with pendent alkene groups and its functionalization by grafting methoxypolyethylene glycol in view of its application possibility in gel polymer electrolyte lithium-ion batteries. The gel polymer electrolyte is prepared by an in-situ thiol-ene click reaction between polycarbonate with pendent alkene groups and thiolated methoxypolyethylene glycol in liquid lithium hexafluorophosphate electrolyte and exhibits conductivity as remarkably high as 2.0×10−2 S cm−1 at ambient temperature. To the best of our knowledge, this gel polymer electrolyte possesses the highest conductivity in all relevant literatures. A free-standing composite gel polymer electrolyte membrane is obtained by incorporating the gel polymer electrolyte with electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride as a skeleton. The as-prepared composite membrane is used to assemble a prototype lithium iron phosphate cell and evaluated accordingly. The battery delivers a good reversible charge-discharge capacity close to 140 mAh g-1 at 1 C rate and 25°C with only 0.022% per cycle decay after 200 cycles. This work provides an interesting molecular design for polycarbonate application in gel electrolyte lithium-ion batteries.

A Zn-MOF-Catalyzed Terpolymerization of Propylene Oxide, CO2, and β-butyrolactone

The terpolymerization of propylene oxide (PO), CO2, and a lactone is one of the prominent sustainable procedures for synthesizing thermoplastic materials at an industrial scale. Herein, the one-pot terpolymerization of PO, CO2, and β-butyrolactone (BBL) was achieved for the first time using a heterogeneous nano-sized catalyst: zinc glutarate (ZnGA-20). The reactivity of both PO and BBL increased with the CO2 pressure, and the polyester content of the terpolymer poly (carbonate-co-ester) could be tuned by controlling the infeed ratio of PO to BBL. When the polyester content increased, the thermal stability of the polymers increased, whereas the glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased.
