New insights into polymer-solvent affinity in thin films

Disclosing Topographical and Chemical Patterns in Confined Films of High-Molecular-Weight Block Copolymers under Controlled Solvothermal Annealing

The microphase separation of high-molecular-weight block copolymers into nanostructured films is strongly dependent on the surface fields. Both, the chain mobility and the effective interaction parameters can lead to deviations from the bulk morphologies in the structures adjacent to the substrate. Resolving frustrated morphologies with domain period L0 above 100 nm is an experimental challenge. Here, solvothermal annealing was used to assess the contribution of elevated temperatures of the vapor Tv and of the substrate Ts on the evolution of the microphase-separated structures in thin films symmetric of polystyrene-b-poly(2vinylpyridine) block copolymer (PS-PVP) with L0 about 120 nm. Pronounced topographic mesh-like and stripe patterns develop on a time scale of min and are attributed to the perforated lamella (PL) and up-standing lamella phases. By setting Tv/Ts combinations it is possible to tune the sizes of the resulting PL patterns by almost 10%. Resolving chemical periodicity using selective metallization of the structures revealed multiplication of the topographic stripes, i.e., complex segregation of the component within the topographic pattern, presumably as a result of morphological phase transition from initial non-equilibrium spherical morphology. Reported results reveal approaches to tune the topographical and chemical periodicity of microphase separation of high-molecular-weight block copolymers under strong confinement, which is essential for exploiting these structures as functional templates.

Tailored Morphology in Polystyrene/Poly(lactic acid) Blend Particles: Solvent's Effect on Controlled Janus/Core-Shell Structures

Controlling the morphology of polymeric particles is vital for their diverse applications. In this study, we explored how solvent composition influences the morphology of poly(styrene)/poly(lactic acid) (PS/PLA) particles prepared via the emulsion solvent evaporation method. We used toluene, dichloromethane (DCM), and various mixtures to prepare these particles. We investigated phase separation within the PS/PLA/solvent system using the Flory-Huggins ternary phase diagram and MesoDyn simulation, revealing pronounced immiscibility and phase separation in both PS/PLA/DCM and PS/PLA/toluene systems. We employed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to characterize the resulting morphologies. Our study unveiled the substantial impact of solvent composition on particle structure. Using pure toluene resulted in acorn-shaped Janus particles. However, incorporating DCM into the solvent induced a transition from Janus to core-shell morphology. Remarkably, core-shell particles exhibited a single-core structure in a mixed toluene/DCM solvent, indicating thermodynamic stability. In contrast, pure DCM favored kinetically controlled multicore morphology, leading to lower PLA crystallinity due to increased PS-PLA interfaces. Samples with high Janus balance formed a self-assembled, two-dimensional (2-D) monolayer film, demonstrating the interfacial activity of the Janus particles. This 2-D monolayer film exhibits desirable emulsification properties with potential applications in various fields. Our study combines theoretical and experimental analyses, shedding light on the profound impact of solvent composition on the PS/PLA particle morphology. We observed transitions from Janus to core-shell structures, highlighted the influence of solvent viscosity on particle size, and uncovered the formation of self-assembled 2-D monolayer films. These insights are pivotal for tailoring polymeric particle structures. Furthermore, our findings advance macromolecular science in interface design, offering promising prospects for innovative materials development.

Enhanced Removal of Photoresist Films through Swelling and Dewetting Using Pluronic Surfactants

Organic photoresist coatings, primarily composed of resins, are commonly used in the electronics industry to protect inorganic underlayers. Conventional photoresist strippers, such as amine-type agents, have shown high removal performance but led to environmental impact and substrate corrosiveness. Therefore, this trade-off must be addressed. In this study, we characterized the removal mechanism of a photoresist film using a nonionic triblock Pluronic surfactant [poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)] in a ternary mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), and water. In particular, the removal dynamics determined by using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring was compared with those determined by performing confocal laser scanning microscopy and visual observation to analyze the morphology, adsorption mass, and viscoelasticity of the photoresist film. In the absence of the Pluronic surfactant, the photoresist film in the ternary solvent exhibited a three-step process: (i) film swelling caused by the penetration of a good solvent (EC and PC), (ii) formation of photoresist particles through dewetting, and (iii) particle aggregation on the substrate. This result was correlated to the Hansen solubility parameters. The addition of the Pluronic surfactant not only prevented photoresist aggregation in the third step but also promoted desorption from the substrate. This effect was dependent on the concentration of the Pluronic surfactant, which influenced diffusion to the interface between the photoresist and the bulk solution. Finally, we proposed a novel photoresist stripping mechanism based on the synergy between dewetting driven by an EC/PC-to-water mixture and adsorption by the Pluronic surfactant.

Adsorption Properties of Essential Oils on Polylactic Acid Microparticles of Different Sizes

The interaction between the polymer and the materials in contact with it affects its applicability. This can be particularly important in applications such as packaging or controlled drug delivery systems. Because of these interactions, the adsorption and diffusion properties of polylactic acid (PLA) are important. The absorption capacity of different polylactic acid particles for different additives like essential oils (Thymus vulgaris, Melissa officinalis, and Foeniculum vulgare essential oils) was investigated depending on the concentration of the essential oil. The PLA microparticles were prepared by the solvent evaporation emulsification method. The prepared particles had a degree of crystallinity of 0.1% and 16.1%, respectively, according to the granules used. This affects the particles' adsorption properties. The specific essential oil uptake of the more crystalline microparticles was on average 15% higher than that of the amorphous particles. The specific amount of essential oil adsorbed decreases with the decreasing concentration of essential oil in the solutions. We also investigated whether the amount of essential oil taken up was correlated with the solubility parameter of the essential oils. We concluded that the difference between the adsorption of the essential oils on the polymer was related to the essential oils' Hansen solubility parameter.

Preparation of Monodisperse Bio-Based Polymer Particles via Dispersion Polymerization

Monodisperse bio-based polymer particles were successfully prepared through the dispersion polymerization of tulip-derived α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone (MBL) in N,N-dimethylformamide/ethanol (7/3, w/w) at 65 °C with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as a colloidal stabilizer. The diameter of the polymer particles was well controlled by changing the composition of the reaction medium or PVP concentration. Furthermore, 100% bio-based poly(MBL) (PMBL) particles were prepared via the dispersion polymerization of MBL in water using hydrolyzed PMBL as a colloidal stabilizer, which was synthesized by hydrolysis of PMBL.

Triazole-Functionalized Mesoporous Materials Based on Poly(styrene-block-lactic acid): A Morphology Study of Thin Films

We report the synthesis of poly(styrene-block-lactic acid) (PS-b-PLA) copolymers with triazole rings as a junction between blocks. These materials were prepared via a ‘click’ strategy which involved the reaction between azide-terminated poly(styrene) (PS-N₃) and acetylene-terminated poly(D,L-lactic acid) (PLA-Ac), accomplished by copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction. This synthetic approach has demonstrated to be effective to obtain specific copolymer structures with targeted self-assembly properties. We observed the self-assembly behavior of the PS-b-PLA thin films as induced by solvent vapor annealing (SVA), thermal annealing (TA), and hydrolysis of the as-spun substrates and monitored their morphological changes by means of different microscopic techniques. Self-assembly via SVA and TA proved to be strongly dependent on the pretreatment of the substrates. Microphase segregation of the untreated films yielded a pore size of 125 nm after a 45-min SVA. After selectively removing the PLA microdomains, the as-spun substrates exhibited the formation of pores on the surface, which can be a good alternative to form an ordered pattern of triazole functionalized porous PS at the mesoscale. Finally, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, the obtained triazole-functionalized PS-porous film exhibited some affinity to copper (Cu) in solution. These materials are suitable candidates to further study its metal-caption properties.

Strategy for Enhancing Ultrahigh-Molecular-Weight Block Copolymer Chain Mobility to Access Large Period Sizes (>100 nm)

Assembling ultrahigh-molecular-weight (UHMW) block copolymers (BCPs) in rapid time scales is perceived as a grand challenge in polymer science due to slow kinetics. Through surface engineering and identifying a nonvolatile solvent (propylene glycol methyl ether acetate, PGMEA), we showcase the impressive ability of a series of lamellar poly(styrene)-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) BCPs to self-assemble directly after spin-coating. In particular, we show the formation of large-period (≈111 nm) lamellar structures from a neat UHMW PS-b-P2VP BCP. The significant influence of solvent-polymer solubility parameters are explored to enhance the polymer chain mobility. After optimization using solvent vapor annealing, increased feature order of ultralarge-period PS-b-P2VP BCP patterns in 1 h is achieved. Isolated metallic and dielectric features are also demonstrated to exemplify the promise that large BCP periods offer for functional applications. The methods described in this article center on industry-compatible patterning schemes, solvents, and deposition techniques. Thus, our straightforward UHMW BCP strategy potentially paves a viable and practical path forward for large-scale integration in various sectors, e.g., photonic band gaps, polarizers, and membranes that demand ultralarge period sizes.

Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Micelles in Selective Solvents: The Effect of Solvent Selectivity on Micelle Formation

We investigated the micellar behavior of a series of asymmetric polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) block copolymers in different P4VP-selective alcoholic solvents. The micellar behavior was further correlated with the spectroscopic ellipsometry results obtained on swelling of PS and P4VP polymer films in the corresponding solvent vapors. The time-resolved (in situ) dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, in combination with (ex situ) electron microscopy imaging, revealed information about the aggregation state of PS-b-P4VP BCP in different alcohols and the effect of heat treatment. The ellipsometry measurements allowed us to estimate the difference in solvent selectivity toward PS/P4VP pair. Both DLS and ellipsometric studies suggested that less polar alcohols (i.e., 1-propanol, 1-butanol, and 1-pentanol) are likely to be close to each other in terms of their selectivity toward PS/P4VP pair, whereas more polar ethanol and methanol show the highest and the lowest affinity toward P4VP, respectively.

Critical Assessment of the Hildebrand and Hansen Solubility Parameters for Polymers

Solubility parameter models are widely used to select suitable solvents/nonsolvents for polymers in a variety of processing and engineering applications. In this study, we focus on two well-established models, namely, the Hildebrand and Hansen solubility parameter models. Both models are built on the basis of the notion of "like dissolves like" and identify a liquid as a good solvent for a polymer if the solubility parameters of the liquid and the polymer are close to each other. Here we make a critical and quantitative assessment of the accuracy/utility of these two models by comparing their predictions against actual experimental data. Using a data set of 75 polymers, we find that the Hildebrand model displays a predictive accuracy of 60% for solvents and 76% for nonsolvents. The Hansen model leads to a similar performance; on the basis of a data set of 25 polymers for which Hansen parameters are available, we find that it has an accuracy of 67% for solvents and 76% for nonsolvents. The availability of the Hildebrand parameters for a large polymer data set makes it a widely applicable capability, as the Hildebrand parameter for a new polymer may be determined using this data set and machine learning methods as we have done before; the predicted Hildebrand parameter for a new polymer may then be used to determine suitable solvents and nonsolvents. Such predictions are difficult to make with the Hansen model, as the data set of Hansen parameters for polymers is rather small. Nevertheless, the Hildebrand approach must be used with caution. Our analysis shows that while the Hildebrand model has a predictive accuracy of 70-75% for nonpolar polymers, it performs rather poorly for polar polymers (with an accuracy of 57%). Going forward, determination of solvents and nonsolvents for polymers may benefit by developing classification models built directly on the basis of available experimental data sets rather than utilizing the solubility parameter approach, which is limited in versatility and accuracy.

Effect of Polymer Permeability and Solvent Removal Rate on In Situ Forming Implants: Drug Burst Release and Microstructure

To explore the mechanism of drug release and depot formation of in situ forming implants (ISFIs), osthole-loaded ISFIs were prepared by dissolving polylactide, poly(lactide-co-glycolide), polycaprolactone, or poly(trimethylene carbonate) in different organic solvents, including N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and triacetin (TA). Drug release, polymer degradation, solvent removal rate and depot microstructure were examined. The burst release effect could be reduced by using solvents exhibit slow forming phase inversion and less permeable polymers. Both the drug burst release and polymer depot microstructure were closely related to the removal rate of organic solvent. Polymers with higher permeability often displayed faster drug and solvent diffusion rates. Due to high polymer-solvent affinity, some of the organic solvent remained in the depot even after the implant was completely formed. The residual of organic solvent could be predicted by solubility parameters. The ISFI showed a lower initial release in vivo than that in vitro. In summary, the effects of different polymers and solvents on drug release and depot formation in ISFI systems were extensively investigated and discussed in this article. The two main factors, polymer permeability and solvent removal rate, were involved in different stages of drug release and depot formation in ISFI systems.

Versatile Multi-Functional Block Copolymers Made by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization and Post-Synthetic Modification: Switching from Volatile Organic Compound Sensors to Polymeric Surfactants for Water Rheology Control via Hydrolysis

Novel, multipurpose terpolymers based on styrene (PS), tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), have been synthesized via Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). Post-synthetic modification with 1-pyrenemethylamine (AMP) allows non-covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes, eventually yielding a conductive nanocomposite materials capable of interacting with different Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) by electrical resistance variation upon exposure. Moreover, facile hydrolysis of the tBMA group yields polyelectrolytic macrosurfactants with remarkable thickening properties for promising applications in water solution, such as Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).

Influence of Solvent Selection in the Electrospraying Process of Polycaprolactone

Electrosprayed polycaprolactone (PCL) microparticles are widely used in medical tissueengineering, drug control release delivery, and food packaging due to their prominent structuresand properties. In electrospraying, the selection of a suitable solvent system as the carrier of PCL isfundamental and a prerequisite for the stabilization of electrospraying, and the control ofmorphology and structure of electrosprayed particles. The latter is not only critical for diversifyingthe characteristics of electrosprayed particles and achieving improvement in their properties, butalso promotes the efficiency of the process and deepens the applications of electrosprayed particlesin various fields. In order to make it systematic and more accessible, this review mainly concludesthe effects of different solution properties on the operating parameters in electrospraying on theformation of Taylor cone and the final structure as well as the morphology. Meanwhile,correlations between operating parameters and electrospraying stages are summarized as well.Finally, this review provides detailed guidance on the selection of a suitable solvent systemregarding the desired morphology, structure, and applications of PCL particles.
