Facile synthesis of highly processable and water dispersible polypyrrole and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) microspheres for enhanced supercapacitive performance

Full color control and patterned display device from cyan/magenta/yellow water-dispersed electrochromic polymer nanoparticles systems

Electrochromic polymers (ECPs) have great application potential in flexible displays, and there is an increasing expectation of using green methods to form ECP films. Herein, we propose a modified microemulsion method to prepare cyan/magenta/yellow (C/M/Y) water-dispersed electrochromic polymer nanoparticles (WDEN) systems. Three polymer films (WDECP-C/M/Y) maintain similar electrochemical properties compared to their corresponding organic solvent-based polymer films. It is intriguing that WDECP-C/M/Y exhibit better electrochromic properties in terms of higher cycling stability (97.24%, 95.05%, and 52.84%, respectively) and faster switching time (0.94 s, 1.09 s, and 1.34 s for coloring time, respectively) due to the introduction of nanoparticles. In addition, it can achieve various desired colors by blending the C/M/Y WDEN systems in different ratios. The calculated chromaticity coordinates of the blending polymer films show close values to the experimental observation, and the calculated ΔE*abvalues range from 2.6 to 10.3, which may provide theoretical guidance for precisely color control. Finally, large-scale and patterned devices were assembled, which can achieve colored-to-colorless reversible electrochromism at a low driving voltage of 0-1.5 V. This work puts forward a universal and environmentally sustainable strategy to prepare WDEN systems, demonstrating their wide range of applications in display devices and electronic tags.

Solution-Processable PEDOT Particles for Coatings of Untreated 3D-Printed Thermoplastics

Lack of solution processability is the main bottleneck in research progression and commercialization of conducting polymers. The current strategy of employing a water-soluble dopant (such as PEDOT:PSS) is not feasible with organic solvents, thus limiting compatibility on hydrophobic surfaces, such as three-dimensional (3D) printable thermoplastics. In this article, we utilize a colloidal dispersion of PEDOT particles to overcome this limitation and formulate an organic paint demonstrating conformal coating on 3D-printed objects. We start with synthesizing PEDOT particles that possess a low electrical resistance (gap resistance of 4.2 ± 0.5 Ω/mm). A particle-based organic paint is formulated and applied via brush painting. Coated objects show a surface resistance of 1 kΩ/cm, comparable to an object printed by commercial conductive filaments. The coating enables the fabrication of pH and strain sensors. Highly conductive PEDOT particles also absorb light strongly, especially in the near-infrared (NIR) range due to the high concentration of charge carriers on the polymer's conjugated backbones (i.e., polarons and bipolarons). PEDOT converts light to heat efficiently, resulting in a superior photothermal activity that is demonstrated by the flash ignition of a particle-impregnated cotton ball. Consequently, painted 3D prints are highly effective in converting NIR light to heat, and a 5 s exposure to a NIR laser (808 nm, 0.8 mW/cm²) leads to a record high-temperature increase (194.5 °C) among PEDOT-based coatings.

Controlled preparation of micro–nano hierarchical hollow calcium carbonate microspheres by pressurized-CO2 carbonization and their CaCO3:Eu3+ photoluminescence properties

Herein, calcium carbonate hollow microspheres with a micro–nano hierarchical structure were successfully synthesized using disodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA-2Na) as an additive, by bubbling pressurized carbon dioxide and calcium hydroxide at 120 °C.

Electropolymerization in a confined nanospace: synthesis of PEDOT nanoparticles in emulsion droplet reactors

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is an important material widely used in electronics for its hole conducting property. A novel strategy for the synthesis of nanoparticulate PEDOT was developed by emulsion droplet electrochemistry. Taking advantage of the space confinement in emulsions, PEDOT nanoparticles were size controllable without use of a separate template. Potential applications were investigated by implementing the PEDOT nanoparticle decorated electrodes as a supercapacitor and a hole transport layer in an organic light emitting diode.

Synthesis of Submicron PEDOT Particles of High Electrical Conductivity via Continuous Aerosol Vapor Polymerization

Current state-of-the-art synthetic strategies produce conducting polymers suffering from low processability and unstable chemical and/or physical properties stifling research and development. Here, we introduce a platform for synthesizing scalable submicron-sized particles of the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). The synthesis is based on a hybrid approach utilizing an aerosol of aqueous oxidant droplets and monomer vapor to engineer a scalable synthetic scheme. This aerosol vapor polymerization technology results in bulk quantities of discrete solid-state submicron particles (750 nm diameter) with the highest reported particle conductivity (330 ± 70 S/cm) so far. Moreover, particles are dispersible in organics and water, obviating the need for surfactants, and remain electrically conductive and doped over a period of months. This enhanced processability and environmental stability enable their incorporation in thermoplastic and cementitious composites for engineering chemoresistive pH and temperature sensors.

Development of a near infrared novel bioimaging agent via co-oligomerization of Congo red with aniline and o-phenylenediamine: experimental and theoretical studies

With a view to study the effect of insertion of a multifunctional dye moiety on the photo physical properties of conducting polymers, the present paper reports for the first time the homopolymerization and co-oligomerization of Congo red (CR) dye with aniline and o-phenylenediamine. The co-oligomerization was established by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-NMR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy while the morphology was examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The theoretical as well as experimental data of ¹H-NMR as well as IR studies confirmed the co-oligomer formation while ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy studies revealed a dynamic change in the optical properties upon variation of co-oligomer composition. X-ray diffraction studies established a crystalline morphology of oligomers. Live cell confocal imaging studies revealed that the co-oligomers could be effectively used in NIR imaging.

Improved cellular response on functionalized polypyrrole interfaces

Neuroregeneration strategies involve multiple factors to stimulate nerve regeneration. Neural support with chemical and physical cues to optimize neural growth and replacing the lesion neuron and axons are crucial for designing neural scaffolds, which is a promising treatment approach. In this study, polypyrrole polymerization and its functionalization at the interface developed by glycine and gelatin for further optimization of cellular response. Nanofibrous scaffolds were fabricated by electrospinning of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan solutions. The electrospun scaffolds were polymerized on the surface by pyrrole monomers to form an electroactive interface for further applications in neural tissue engineering. The polymerized polypyrrole showed a positive zeta potential value of 57.5 ± 5.46 mV. The in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility of the glycine and gelatin-functionalized polypyrrole-coated scaffolds were evaluated. No inflammatory cells were observed for the implanted scaffolds. Further, DAPI nucleus staining showed a superior cell attachment on the gelatin-functionalized polypyrrole-coated scaffolds. The topography and tuned positively charged polypyrrole interface with gelatin functionalization is expected to be particularly efficient physical and chemical simultaneous factors for promoting neural cell adhesion.

Toward fiber-, paper-, and foam-based flexible solid-state supercapacitors: electrode materials and device designs

Flexible solid-state supercapacitors possess promising safety performance and intrinsic fast charging-discharging properties, enabling them to accomplish the requirements of lightweight and multifunctional wearable electronics that have recently become fairly popular. Because electrode materials are the core component of flexible solid-state supercapacitors, we exhaustively review the recent investigations involving electrode materials that have used carbons, metal oxides, and conductive polymers. The principles and methods of optimizing and fabricating electrodes for use in flexible supercapacitors are discussed through a comprehensive analysis of the literature. In addition, we focused on three types of flexible solid-state supercapacitors (fiber-, paper-, and porous foam-based structures) to satisfy the requirements of flexible electronic devices. Further, we summarize the practical applications of flexible solid-state supercapacitors, including energy conversion/collection devices and energy storage/detection devices. Finally, we provide the developmental direction for flexible solid-state supercapacitors in the future.

Fabrication of Protein Microparticles and Microcapsules with Biomolecular Tools

Microparticles have attracted much attention for medical, analytical and biological applications. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) templating method with the advantages of having narrow size distribution, controlled morphology and good biocompatibility that has been widely used for the synthesis of various protein-based microparticles. Despite CaCO3 template is biocompatible, most of the conventional methods to create stable protein microparticles are mainly driven by chemical crosslink reagents which may induce potential harmful effect and remains undesirable especially for biomedical or clinical applications. In this article, we demonstrate the fabrication of protein microparticles and microcapsules with an innovative method using biomolecular tools such as enzymes and affinity molecules to trigger the assembling of protein molecules within a porous CaCO3 template followed by a template removal step. We demonstrated the enzyme-assisted fabrication of collagen microparticles triggered by transglutaminase, as well as the affinity-assisted fabrication of BSA-biotin avidin microcapsules triggered by biotin-avidin affinity interaction, respectively. Based on the different protein assemble mechanisms, the collagen microparticles appeared as a solid-structured particles, while the BSA-biotin avidin microcapsules appeared as hollow-structured morphology. The fabrication procedures are simple and robust that allows producing protein microparticles or microcapsules under mild conditions at physiological pH and temperature. In addition, the microparticle morphologies, protein compositions and the assemble mechanisms were studied. Our technology provides a facile approach to design and fabricate protein microparticles and microcapsules that are useful in the area of biomaterials, pharmaceuticals and analytical chemistry.
