Abstract
Chitosan stands out as the only known polysaccharide of its kind, second only to cellulose. As the second-largest biopolymer globally, chitosan and its derivatives are extensively used in diverse areas such as metal anti-corrosion prevention, food production, and medical fields. Its benefits include environmental friendliness, non-toxicity, cost-effectiveness, and biodegradability. Notably, the use of chitosan and its derivatives has gained substantial attention and has been extensively researched in the fields of metal anti-corrosion prevention and antibacterial applications. By means of chemical modification or synergistic action, the inherent limitations of chitosan can be substantially improved, thereby enhancing its biological and physicochemical properties to meet a wider range of applications and more demanding application requirements. This article offers a comprehensive review of chitosan and its modified composite materials, focusing on the enhancement of their anticorrosion and antibacterial properties, as well as the mechanisms by which they serve as anticorrosion and antibacterial agents. Additionally, it summarizes the synthesis routes of various modification methods of chitosan and their applications in different fields, aiming to contribute to the interdisciplinary development and potential applications of chitosan in various areas.

Abstract
The 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, present in pilosebaceous units, plays a crucial role in the appearance of cutaneous hyperandrogenism manifestations (hirsutism, acne, and androgenetic alopecia). Its inhibition is an excellent strategy to reverse these conditions. Given the limitations of existing treatments, with transient effects and delayed therapeutic response, as well as the possibility of causing undesirable side effects, this study sought to develop new drug delivery systems to overcome these limitations. In other words, innovative stimuli-responsive hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized using silica/natural polysaccharides, encapsulating 5-alpha-reductase enzyme inhibitors derived from the plant Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville (commonly known as 'Barbatimão'). Silica core was synthesized by the modified Stöber method. The pH responsive polysaccharides used to coat the porous silica cores were chitosan, and sodium alginate, this coating was carried out using the Layer-by-Layer technique. The hybrid nanoparticles were characterized at molecular and physical-chemical levels. Furthermore, encapsulation efficiency, pH-dependent release behavior, and cytotoxicity were evaluated. Amorphous mesoporous structure with adequate size for follicular delivery (between 300 and 600 nm) in addition to effective phytocompound loading capacity, above 80 % was obtained. Based on the release studies, it was possible to observe pH responsiveness. The ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) obtained from "Barbatimão" bark extract was released in a controlled and more efficient manner by the alginate-coated nanoparticle (SNP_EAF_SA) at pH 7.4, which corresponds to the pH at the deepest area of hair follicles. Furthermore, SNP_EAF_SA proved to be less cytotoxic compared to EAF and chitosan-coated hybrid nanoparticles (SNP_EAF_CH). Characterization, release, and cytotoxicity results indicate that SNP_EAF_SA is a promising system for on-demand follicular delivery of antiandrogenic actives contained in EAF.

Abstract
Room-temperature preparation of polymer-based covalent hybrids, which with multiple functional characteristics, is instrumental to overcome the performance shortcomings of single-polymer materials and broaden their applications thus. Herein, by introducing chitosan (CS) as a starting substrate into benzoxazine-isocyanide chemistry (BIC)/sol-gel reaction system, a novel polyamide (PA)/SiO2/CS covalent hybrid (PA-Si-CS) was successfully prepared in-situ at 30 °C. PA-Si-CS's chemical structure and elementary properties were characterized here. The introduction of CS combining with the presence of diverse N, O-containing segments (amide, phenol -OH, Si-OH, etc.) in PA-Si-CS provided its synergistic adsorption for Hg2+ and anionic dye Congo red (CR). The capture of PA-Si-CS for Hg2+ was rationally applied to the "enrichment"-type electrochemical probing of Hg2+. Relevant detection range, detection limit, interference, and probing mechanism were systematically analyzed. Compared with the experimental results of control electrodes, the electrode modified with PA-Si-CS (PA-Si-CS/GCE) showed a significantly enhanced electrochemical response to Hg2+, with a detection limit up to ~2.2 × 10-8 mol/L. In addition, PA-Si-CS also exhibited the specific adsorption for CR. Systematic analyses of dye adsorption selectivity, kinetics, isothermal models, thermodynamics, and adsorption mechanism told that PA-Si-CS can be used as an efficient CR adsorbent, with a maximum adsorption capacity of ~348 mg/g.

Abstract
Metal degradation due to corrosion is a major challenge in most industries, and its control and prevention has to maintain a balance between efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The rising concern over environmental damage has greatly influenced this domain, as corrosion prevention should comply with the waste regulations of different regions. In this respect, a fundamental question is which modern synthetic materials are more viable from the point of view of their effectiveness. Therefore, this paper is aims to provide an advanced and holistic review of corrosion prevention and control methods. Corrosion prevention techniques have become extensive; however, the literature indicates that polymer coatings, nano-composite coatings, and encapsulation techniques consistently provide the most efficient and feasible outcomes. Therefore, this review article examined the phenomenon of corrosion inhibition mainly from the perspective of these three techniques. Moreover, this research utilized secondary qualitative methods to obtain data and information on comparative techniques. It is found that due to the rapid development of novel materials, corrosion inhibition techniques need to be developed on scales that are more general, so that they could be applied to varying environments. The self-healing coatings are generally based on epoxy-resins incorporated with synthetic compounds such as inhibitor ions, amino-acids, or carboxylic acids. These coatings have become more widespread, especially due to bans on several traditional prevention materials such as compounds of chromium (VI). However, self-healing coatings are comparatively more costly than other techniques because of their method of synthesis and long-term durability. Therefore, although self-healing nanomaterial-based coatings are viable options for limited usage, their utilization in large and complex facilities is limited due to the costs involved. Amino acids and other biological macro-molecules provide another option to attain environmental sustainability and long durability, especially due to their origins being most of naturally occurring compounds such as lignin, cellulose, and proteins.

Improved Corrosion Resistance of Magnesium Alloy AZ31 in Ringer Lactate by Bilayer Anodic Film/Beeswax–Colophony. COATINGS 2021. Abstract
A bilayer anodic film/beeswax–colophony is proposed for improving the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy surface. The bilayer was synthesized on the AZ31 alloy by anodization and subsequent dip coating, and the corrosion behavior was investigated by electrochemical measurements and weight loss test in Ringer lactate at 37 °C. The bilayer improved the electrochemical corrosion resistance by four orders of magnitude, as demonstrated by ~104 times lower corrosion current density in the polarization curves and ~104 higher film resistance in the impedance spectra. The tremendous surface area of the porous anodic film led to a strong attachment of the topcoat beeswax–colophony. Most of the coating remained attached to the surface after 14 days soaking in Ringer lactate. A few small blisters developed under the bilayer contributed to the low mass loss of 0.07 mg/cm2/day compared to the bare substrate, with an average loss rate of 0.25 mg/cm2/day. Local detachment of topcoat layer exposed the underlying anodic film that triggered the deposition of Ca and further nucleation of the Ca–P compound on the surface. The existence of a Ca−P compound with a Ca/P ratio of 1.68 indicated the ability of the bilayer to promote the formation of bone mineral apatite.

Abstract
In this work, we have developed a simple and very effective experimental strategy for the reaction of Knoevenagel via the condensation of aromatic aldehydes substituted with active methylene compounds in the presence of hybrid nanocomposites xMCl2-yNaPO3 (MCl2 = 2,2′-dibenzimidazolyl butane dichlorhydrates), under ecological conditions. The Phosphate-Benzimidazole hybrid nanocomposite as heterogeneous catalysts has demonstrated a high catalytic activity for the Knoevenagel condensation in ethanol as an ecological solvent. It has several advantages such as light reaction conditions, a simple and ecological working procedure. Meanwhile, xMCl2-yNaPO3 can be recovered by simple filtration and this catalytic system having an interesting lifetime (five cycles) with no decrease in activity.

Abstract
We have constructed a novel gated nanocarrier for the real-time monitoring of drug release, consisting of three parts: (i) mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as the drug carrier, (ii) chitosan as the nanovalve to block and unlock the pores, and (iii) 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore as a connecting arm and fluorescent signal source. In the absence of glutathione (GSH), the integrity of the system results in the formation of pores in a closed state and the sulfone would block the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process, leading to no fluorescence emission. However, the nucleophilic attack of GSH can cause the removal of the chitosan and recovery of ICT property, thus triggering drug release and green fluorescence emission. The results demonstrate that the change of GSH concentration in vivo or vitro would lead to a change in drug release as well as a concurrent change in fluorescence signal, which can expand the application of our gated nanocarrier for monitoring different drug release in real time.
