Unconventional approaches for chiral resolution

Chirality is a fundamental and ubiquitous property of nature involved in multiple fields of science. In particular, the possible resolution of the enantiomeric forms of a molecule is crucial in the pharmaceutical, food, and agrochemical industries. The search for efficient, broad-spectrum, and yet simple methods for obtaining enantiomerically pure substances is a current challenge. Enantioselective resolution methods rely on an asymmetric environment that allows the two antipodes of a chiral molecule to be distinguished. In addition to enantiomeric separation techniques, such as chromatography and electrophoresis, new promising approaches involving out-of-the-scheme synergistic effects between chiral selectors (CS) and external stimuli are emerging. This Trends article discusses different enantioselective mechanisms triggered by unconventional physicochemical stimuli for the design of avant-garde approaches that could offer novel perspectives in the field of chiral resolution.

A supramolecular assembly-based strategy towards the generation and amplification of photon up-conversion and circularly polarized luminescence

For the molecular properties in which energy transfer/migration is determinantal, such as triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon up-conversion (TTAUC), the overall performance is largely affected by the intermolecular distance and relative molecular orientations. In such scenarios, tools that may steer the intermolecular interactions and provide control over molecular organisation in the bulk, become most valuable. Often these non-covalent interactions, found predominantly in supramolecular assemblies, enable pre-programming of the molecular network in the assembled structures. In other words, by employing supramolecular chemistry principles, an arrangement where molecular units are arranged in a desired fashion, very much like a Lego toy, could be achieved. This leads to enhanced energy transfer from one molecule to other. In recent past, chiral luminescent systems have attracted huge attention for producing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In such systems, chirality is a necessary requirement. Chirality induction/transfer through supramolecular interactions has been known for a long time. It was realized recently that it may help in the generation and amplification of CPL signals as well. In this review article we have discussed the applicability of self-/co-assembly processes for achieving maximum TTA-UC and CPL in various molecular systems.

Chemical and Physical Properties of Photonic Noble-Metal Nanomaterials

Colloidal noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) are composed of metal cores and organic or inorganic ligand shells. These NPs support size- and shape-dependent plasmonic resonances. They can be assembled from dispersions into artificial metamolecules which have collective plasmonic resonances originating from coupled bright and dark optical electric and magnetic modes that form depending on the size and shape of the constituent NPs and their number, arrangement, and interparticle distance. NPs can also be assembled into extended 2D and 3D metamaterials that are glassy thin films or ordered thin films or crystals, also known as superlattices and supercrystals. The metamaterials have tunable optical properties that depend on the size, shape, and composition of the NPs, and on the number of NP layers and their interparticle distance. Interestingly, strong light-matter interactions in superlattices form plasmon polaritons. Tunable interparticle distances allow designer materials with dielectric functions tailorable from that characteristic of an insulator to that of a metal, and serve as strong optical absorbers or scatterers, respectively. In combination with lithography techniques, these extended assemblies can be patterned to create subwavelength NP superstructures and form large-area 2D and 3D metamaterials that manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of transmitted or reflected light.

Hierarchical Self-Assembly Pathways of Peptoid Helices and Sheets

Peptoids (N-substituted glycines) are a class of tailorable synthetic peptidomic polymers. Amphiphilic diblock peptoids have been engineered to assemble 2D crystalline lattices with applications in catalysis and molecular separations. Assembly is induced in an organic solvent/water mixture by evaporating the organic phase, but the assembly pathways remain uncharacterized. We conduct all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of Nbrpe6Nc6 as a prototypical amphiphilic diblock peptoid comprising an NH₂-capped block of six hydrophobic N-((4-bromophenyl)ethyl)glycine residues conjugated to a polar NH₃(CH₂)₅CO tail. We identify a thermodynamically controlled assembly mechanism by which monomers assemble into disordered aggregates that self-order into 1D chiral helical rods then 2D achiral crystalline sheets. We support our computational predictions with experimental observations of 1D rods using small-angle X-ray scattering, circular dichroism, and atomic force microscopy and 2D crystalline sheets using X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. This work establishes a new understanding of hierarchical peptoid assembly and principles for the design of peptoid-based nanomaterials.

Tuning Organic Microcrystal Morphologies through Crystal Engineering Strategies toward Anisotropic Optical Waveguide

The construction of organic optoelectronic materials with desirable size and morphology remains a challenge now. Crystal engineering strategies (polymorphs and cocrystals) provide convenience for tailoring molecular packing and further controlling the growth morphology and photofunctionality of materials. Herein, we prepare polymorphic 2D plate crystals and 3D microhelixes by assembly of a cyanostilbene derivative (2-(3',5'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-biphenyl-4-yl)-3-(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)acrylonitrile, CF₃-CN-Py). The former emits blue emission, while the latter emits green emission. Different crystallization environments contribute to the adjustable morphologies. Then, novel cocrystals are fabricated with the introduction of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (FDIB) to CF₃-CN-Py. Both molecular conformation and packing are totally changed in the cocrystal system. Such cocrystal displays a 1D sky-blue emissive rod shape on account of a long-range ordered π-stacking of molecules. In addition, the 2D plate crystal and 1D rod cocrystal are further applied to optical waveguides. In the plate crystal, a packing of transition dipole moment (μ) inclined to the upper surface leads to an anisotropic optical waveguide. In the cocrystal, owing to the nearly horizontal μ orientation, the cocrystal exhibits light propagation along the primary growth direction and a low optical loss coefficient. The present study supplies an effective way to construct materials with controlled morphology and optical waveguide.

Supramolecular Chirality Synchronization in Thin Films of Plasmonic Nanocomposites

Mirror symmetry breaking in materials is a fascinating phenomenon that has practical implications for various optoelectronic technologies. Chiral plasmonic materials are particularly appealing due to their strong and specific interactions with light. In this work we broaden the portfolio of available strategies toward the preparation of chiral plasmonic assemblies, by applying the principles of chirality synchronization-a phenomenon known for small molecules, which results in the formation of chiral domains from transiently chiral molecules. We report the controlled cocrystallization of 23 nm gold nanoparticles and liquid crystal molecules yielding domains made of highly ordered, helical nanofibers, preferentially twisted to the right or to the left within each domain. We confirmed that such micrometer sized domains exhibit strong, far-field circular dichroism (CD) signals, even though the bulk material is racemic. We further highlight the potential of the proposed approach to realize chiral plasmonic thin films by using a mechanical chirality discrimination method. Toward this end, we developed a rapid CD imaging technique based on the use of polarized light optical microscopy (POM), which enabled probing the CD signal with micrometer-scale resolution, despite of linear dichroism and birefringence in the sample. The developed methodology allows us to extend intrinsically local effects of chiral synchronization to the macroscopic scale, thereby broadening the available tools for chirality manipulation in chiral plasmonic systems.

The formation of a chiral supramolecular structure acting as a template for chirality transfer

Spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking in self-assembled achiral trimers under a nonequilibrium state induces supramolecular chirality, which is stabilized by a polymer network to produce a homochiral material. Chirality is transferred to the polymer film in the course of polymerization of achiral reactive monomers on the surface.

Mirror Symmetry Breaking in Liquids and Their Impact on the Development of Homochirality in Abiogenesis: Emerging Proto-RNA as Source of Biochirality?

Recent progress in mirror symmetry breaking and chirality amplification in isotropic liquids and liquid crystalline cubic phases of achiral molecule is reviewed and discussed with respect to its implications for the hypothesis of emergence of biological chirality. It is shown that mirror symmetry breaking takes place in fluid systems where homochiral interactions are preferred over heterochiral and a dynamic network structure leads to chirality synchronization if the enantiomerization barrier is sufficiently low, i.e., that racemization drives the development of uniform chirality. Local mirror symmetry breaking leads to conglomerate formation. Total mirror symmetry breaking requires either a proper phase transitions kinetics or minor chiral fields, leading to stochastic and deterministic homochirality, respectively, associated with an extreme chirality amplification power close to the bifurcation point. These mirror symmetry broken liquids are thermodynamically stable states and considered as possible systems in which uniform biochirality could have emerged. A model is hypothesized, which assumes the emergence of uniform chirality by chirality synchronization in dynamic “helical network fluids” followed by polymerization, fixing the chirality and leading to proto-RNA formation in a single process.

Solid-state synthesis of cyclo LD-diphenylalanine: A chiral phase built from achiral subunits

The solid-state structure of LL/DD or LD/DL diphenylalanine diluted in KBr pellets is studied by infrared (IR) absorption and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy. The structure depends on the absolute configuration of the residues. The natural LL diphenylalanine exists as a mixture of neutral and zwitterionic structures, depending on the humidity of the sample, while mostly the zwitterion is observed for LD diphenylalanine whatever the experimental conditions. The system undergoes spontaneous cyclization upon heating at 125°C, resulting to the formation of a diketopiperazine (DKP) dipeptide as the only product. The reaction is faster for LD than for LL diphenylalanine. As expected, LL and DD diphenylalanine react to form the LL and DD enantiomers of cyclo diphenylalanine. Interestingly, the DKP dipeptides formed from the LD or DL diphenylalanine show unexpected optical activity, with opposite VCD spectra for the products formed from the LD and DL reagents. This is explained in terms of chirality synchronization between the monomers within the crystal, which retain the symmetry of the reagent, resulting to the formation of a new chiral phase made from transiently chiral molecules.

Controlling spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking in cubic liquid crystalline phases by the cycloaliphatic ring size

Rod-like molecules combining a fork-like triple chain end and a cycloaliphatic apex are introduced as a new design concept for materials with broad ranges of bicontinuous cubic (Cub_bi) phases. By ring expansion from n = 4 to 12 a sequence of three Cub_bi phases is observed; the achiral double gyroid la3[combining macron]d phase, a chiral "Im3m" phase and an achiral re-entrant la3[combining macron]d phase. The chiral "Im3m" phase is formed if the helical twist between the molecules along the networks is in the range of 8.6°-9.5°, either for the individual compounds or their mixtures.
