Abstract
A simple zinc catalyst showing high activity for both the synthesis of polylactide, a biodegradable polymer produced from renewable feedstock, and its degradation was described. In the ring-opening polymerization of lactides, the zinc catalyst showed one of the highest activities reported in the literature for reactions carried out in solution at room temperature. This excellent performance was preserved even when the process was performed under industrial conditions: at high temperature, in the absence of solvent, and by using a low catalyst loading with unpurified monomers. The same complex revealed high efficiency also in depolymerization of polylactide by alcoholysis, a process that occurred efficiently at room temperature and in the absence of solvent, conditions that reduce costs and guarantee low environmental impact.

Abstract
This review highlights recent developments in the field of biodegradable polymeric materials intended to replace non-degradable conventional plastics, focusing on studies from the last ten years involving the stereoselective ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters. This encompasses exciting advances in both catalyst design and monomer scope. Notably, the last decade has seen the emergence of metal-free stereocontrolled ROP for instance, as well as the synthesis and stereocontrolled polymerization of new types of chiral monomers. This study will emphasize recent stereoselective polymerization catalysts and chiral monomers and will focus on stereocontrol quantification, the mechanisms of stereocontrol and their differentiation if reported and studied for a specific catalyst system.

Abstract
The design of new materials with tunable properties and intrinsic recyclability, derived from biomass under mild conditions, stands as a gold standard in polymer chemistry. Reported herein are platinum complexes which catalyze the formation of poly(silylether)s (PSEs) at low catalyst loadings. These polymers are directly obtained from dual-functional biobased building blocks such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) or vanillin, coupled with various dihydrosilanes. Access to different types of copolymer architectures (statistical or alternating) is highlighted by several synthetic strategies. The materials obtained were then characterized as low Tg materials (ranging from -60 to 29 °C), stable upon heating (T-5% up to 301 °C) and resistant towards uncatalyzed methanolysis. Additionally, quantitative chemical recycling of several PSEs could be triggered by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis or methanolysis. These results emphasize the interest of biobased poly(silylether)s as sustainable materials with high recycling potential.

Abstract
Reaction of the [2 + 2] Schiff-base macrocycles {[2-(OH)-5-(R)-C6H2-1,3-(CH)2][CH2CH2(2-C6H4N)2]}2 (R = Me, L1H2; tBu, L2H2) with FeBr2 afforded the complexes [FeBr(L1H2)]2[(FeBr3)2O]·2MeCN (1·2MeCN), [FeBr(L2H2)][X] (X = 0.5(FeBr3)2O, 2·0.5MeCN, X = Br, 3·5.5MeCN), respectively. Reaction of L2H2 with [KFe(OtBu)3(THF)] (formed in situ from FeBr2 and KOtBu), following work-up, led to the isolation of the complex [Fe(L2)(L2H)]·3MeCN (4·3MeCN), whilst with [CuBr2] afforded [CuBr(L2H2)][CuBr2]·2MeCN (5·2MeCN). Attempts to form mixed Co/Ti species by reaction of [CoBrL2][CoBr3(NCMe)] with TiCl4 resulted in [L2H4][CoBr4]·2MeCN (6·2MeCN). Use of the related oxy-bridged Schiff-base macrocycles {[2-(OH)-5-(R)-C6H2-1,3-(CH)2][O(2-C6H4N)2]}2 (R = Me, L3H2; tBu, L4H2) with CoBr2 led to the isolation of the complexes [(CoBr)2(L3)]·2C3H6O (7·2C3H6O), [Co(NCMe)2(L4H2)][CoBr4]·5MeCN (8·5MeCN), [Co(NCMe)6][CoBr3(MeCN)]2·2MeCN (9·2MeCN). For comparative structural/polymerisation studies, the complexes {CoBr(NCMe)L5}2·2MeCN (10·2MeCN) and [Co(NCMe)2L5]2[CoBr3(NCMe)]2 (11), [FeBr(NCMe)L5]2·2MeCN (12·2MeCN) where L5H = 2,6-(CHO)2-4-tBu-C6H2OH, as well as the chelate-free salt [Fe(NCMe)6][FeBr3OFeBr3] (13) have been isolated and structurally characterized. The ability of these complexes to act as catalysts for the ring opening polymerisation (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) and δ-valerolactone (δ-VL) was investigated, as well as co-polymerisation of ε-CL with rac-lactide (r-LA) and vice versa.

Abstract
Catalysts based on cobalt amino acids and 2,2 bipyridine (bipy) present an attractive and cost-effective alternative as ring opening polymerization catalysts, yet this system remains underexplored despite the advantageous coordination properties of amino acids and bipy as ligands combined with the variety of accessible oxidation states and coordination geometries of cobalt. Here, metal complexes of type [Co(aa)2(bipy)] with amino acids (aa: glycine, leucine and threonine) as ligands are reported. The complexes were characterized spectroscopically (IR, UV-vis and 1H, 13C NMR for diamagnetic species), and by MS spectrometry and elemental analysis. The data reveal that the 2,2 bipyridine acts as a neutral bidentate donor coordinating to the metal ion through two nitrogen atoms and the amino acid acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the carboxylate and amino group forming a stable five membered ring and a pseudo-octahedral geometry around the Co center. The activity of the complexes for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide is presented. The complexes are effective initiators for the ROP of rac-lactide (K obs = 9.05 × 10-4 s-1) at 100 : 1 [rac-lactide] : [catalyst] 1 M overall concentration of lactide in toluene at 403 K.

Abstract
A series of Co(ii), Zn(ii), and Cd(ii) complexes supported by 1-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-N-((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-N-(furan-2-ylmethyl)methanamine (LA) and N,N-bis((3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)-4-isopropylaniline (LB) were synthesized. The direct chelation of CoCl2·6H2O, ZnCl2, and CdBr2·4H2O by the ligands produced [LnMX2] (Ln = LA or LB; M = Zn or Co, with X = Cl; M = Cd, with X = Br) complexes in high yields. Structural studies revealed that [LBCoCl2] and [LBZnCl2] adopted distorted tetrahedral geometries, as LB coordinated the metal centers in a bidentate fashion, while LA coordinated the metal centers in a tridentate fashion through the nitrogen atoms of the pyrazole and amine moieties, so that [LACoCl2] and [LAZnCl2] exhibited trigonal bipyramidal geometries and [LACdBr2] a square pyramidal geometry. [LBCdBr2] has two Cd-containing structures per unit cell, whereby one Cd center adopted a distorted tetrahedral geometry and the other exhibited square bipyramidal geometry. The in situ-generated alkyl derivatives of the synthesized complexes were assessed in the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide. Heterotactic polylactides (PLAs) were furnished with all complexes. The [LBZnCl2]/MeLi system produced PLA with a superior heterotactic bias (Pr up to 0.94) at −25 °C. PLAs with wide-ranging polydispersity indices (1.16–2.23) and low molecular weights were produced in all cases, irrespective of the specific M(II) center and ancillary ligand utilized. Co(ii), Zn(ii), and Cd(ii) complexes supported by bis-pyrazolyl ligands were applied to the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide to produce heterotactic polylactides (PLAs) with superior heterotactic bias i.e. Pr up to 0.94 at −25 °C.![]()

Abstract
Ruthenium complexes have attracted a lot of attention as potential photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, some of these PSs are unsuitable for PDT applications due to their low cellular uptake, which is possibly the consequence of their relatively low degree of lipophilicity, which prevents them from penetrating into tumor cells. Here, we report the simple one-pot synthesis of ruthenium-containing nanoconjugates from a non-cell-penetrating, non-phototoxic ruthenium(ii) polypyridyl complex (RuOH), by a drug-initiated ring-opening polymerization of lactide through the formation of a zinc initiator. These conjugates were then formulated into nanoparticles by nanoprecipitation and characterized by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization – time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Finally, their photo-therapeutic activity (λexc = 480 nm, 3.21 J cm−2) in cancerous human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) and non-cancerous retinal pigment epithelium (RPE-1) cells was tested alongside that of RuOH and their cellular uptake in HeLa cells was assessed by confocal microscopy and inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). All nanoparticles showed improved photophysical properties including luminescence and singlet oxygen generation, enhanced cellular uptake and, capitalizing on this, an improved photo-toxicity. Overall, this study demonstrates how it is possible to transform a non-phototoxic PDT PS into an active PS using an easy, versatile polymerization technique. This study shows the transformation of a non-phototoxic PDT photosensitizer into an active photosensitizer using an easy, versatile and generalizable one-pot ruthenium-initiated polymerization technique.![]()
