A comparative study between chemically modified and copper nanoparticle immobilized Nylon 6 films to explore their efficiency in fighting against two types of pathogenic bacteria

Therapeutic strategies for drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa: Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is a widely prevalent opportunistic pathogen. Multiple resistant strains of PA have emerged from excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics, making their eradication increasingly difficult. Therefore, the search for highly efficient and secure novel antimicrobial agents is crucial. According to reports, there is an increasing exploration of nanometals for antibacterial purposes. The antibacterial mechanisms involving the nanomaterials themselves, the release of ions, and the induced oxidative stress causing leakage and damage to biomolecules are widely accepted. Additionally, the study of the cytotoxicity of metal nanoparticles is crucial for their antibacterial applications. This article summarizes the types of metal nanomaterials and metal oxide nanomaterials that can be used against PA, their respective unique antibacterial mechanisms, cytotoxicity, and efforts made to improve antibacterial performance and reduce toxicity, including combination therapy with other materials and antibiotics, as well as green synthesis approaches.

Anti-adhesive activity of some secondary metabolites against Staphylococcus aureus on 3D printing medical materials

Recent improvements in 3D printing technology have increased the usage of 3D printed materials in several areas. An exciting and emerging area of applying these next-generation manufacturing strategies is the development of devices for biomedical applications. The main aim of this work was to investigate the effect of tannic acid, gallic acid, and epicatechin gallate on the physicochemical characteristics of acrylonitrile butadiene-styrene (ABS) and Nylon 3D printing materials using the contact angle method. The adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus on untreated and treated materials was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and the images were treated by MATLAB software. The results of the contact angle measurements showed a significant change in the physicochemical properties of both surfaces, indicated an increase in the electron donor character of 3D printing materials following treatment. Thus, the ABS surfaces treated with tannic acid, gallic acid, and epicatechin gallate have become more electron donating. Furthermore, our results proved the ability of S. aureus to adhere on all materials with a percentage of 77.86% for ABS and 91.62% for nylon. The SEM has shown that all actives molecules were sufficient to obtain better inhibition of bacterial adhesion, which tannic acid has shown a total inhibition of S. aureus on ABS. From these results, our treatment presents a high potential for utilization as an active coating to prevent bacterial attachment and the eventual biofilm development in medical field.

Organocatalytic Copolymerization of Cyclic Lysine Derivative and ε-Caprolactam toward Antibacterial Nylon-6 Polymers

Functional polymers of nylon-6, particularly those with sustained antibacterial functions, have many practical applications. However, the development of functional ε-caprolactam monomers for the subsequent ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) formation of these materials remains a challenge. Here we report a t-BuP₄-mediated ROCOP of dimethyl-protected cyclic lysine with ε-caprolactam, followed by quaternization, affording antibacterial nylon-6 polymers bearing quaternary ammonium functionality with high molecular weight (up to 77.4 kDa). The antibacterial nylon-6 polymers exhibited good physical and mechanical properties and strong antimicrobial activities. At 25 mol % quaternary ammonium group incorporation, the nylon-6 polymer demonstrated complete killing of Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative). The results from this study may provide a strategy for the facile preparation of antibacterial nylon-6 polymers to addressing the public health and safety challenges.

Antimicrobial textile: recent developments and functional perspective

Antimicrobial textiles are functionally active textiles, which may kill the microorganisms or inhibit their growth. The present article explores the applications of different synthetic and natural antimicrobial compounds used to prepare antimicrobial textiles. Different types of antimicrobial textiles including: antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral have also been discussed. Different strategies and methods used for the detection of a textile's antimicrobial properties against bacterial and fungal pathogens as well as viral particles have also been highlighted. These antimicrobial textiles are used in a variety of applications ranging from households to commercial including air filters, food packaging, health care, hygiene, medical, sportswear, storage, ventilation and water purification systems. Public awareness on antimicrobial textiles and growth in commercial opportunities has been observed during past few years. Not only antimicrobial properties, but its durability along with the color, prints and designing are also important for fashionable clothing; thus, many commercial brands are now focusing on such type of materials. Overall, this article summarizes the scientific aspect dealing with different fabrics including natural or synthetic antimicrobial agents along with their current functional perspective and future opportunities.

Recent developments in antimicrobial and antifouling coatings to reduce or prevent contamination and cross-contamination of food contact surfaces by bacteria

Illness as the result of ingesting bacterially contaminated foodstuffs represents a significant annual loss of human quality of life and economic impact globally. Significant research investment has recently been made in developing new materials that can be used to construct food contacting tools and surfaces that might minimize the risk of cross-contamination of bacteria from one food item to another. This is done to mitigate the spread of bacterial contamination and resultant foodborne illness. Internet-based literature search tools such as Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Scopus were utilized to investigate publishing trends within the last 10 years related to the development of antimicrobial and antifouling surfaces with potential use in food processing applications. Technologies investigated were categorized into four major groups: antimicrobial agent-releasing coatings, contact-based antimicrobial coatings, superhydrophobic antifouling coatings, and repulsion-based antifouling coatings. The advantages for each group and technical challenges remaining before wide-scale implementation were compared. A diverse array of emerging antimicrobial and antifouling technologies were identified, designed to suit a wide range of food contact applications. Although each poses distinct and promising advantages, significant further research investment will likely be required to reliably produce effective materials economically and safely enough to equip large-scale operations such as farms, food processing facilities, and kitchens.

Bacteria Adhesion of Textiles Influenced by Wettability and Pore Characteristics of Fibrous Substrates

Bacteria adhesion on the surface is an initial step to create biofouling, which may lead to a severe infection of living organisms and humans. This study is concerned with investigating the textile properties including wettability, porosity, total pore volume, and pore size in association with bacteria adhesion. As model bacteria, Gram-negative, rod-shaped Escherichia coli and the Gram-positive, spherical-shaped Staphylococcus aureus were used to analyze the adhesion tendency. Electrospun webs made from polystyrene and poly(lactic acid) were used as substrates, with modification of wettability by the plasma process using either O2 or C4F8 gas. The pore and morphological characteristics of fibrous webs were analyzed by the capillary flow porometer and scanning electron microscopy. The substrate's wettability appeared to be the primary factor influencing the cell adhesion, where the hydrophilic surface resulted in considerably higher adhesion. The pore volume and the pore size, rather than the porosity itself, were other important factors affecting the bacteria adherence and retention. In addition, the compact spatial distribution of fibers limited the cell intrusion into the pores, reducing the total amount of adherence. Thus, superhydrophobic textiles with the reduced total pore volume and smaller pore size would circumvent the adhesion. The findings of this study provide informative discussion on the characteristics of fibrous webs affecting the bacteria adhesion, which can be used as a fundamental design guide of anti-biofouling textiles.

The Covalent Tethering of Poly(ethylene glycol) to Nylon 6 Surface via N,N'-Disuccinimidyl Carbonate Conjugation: A New Approach in the Fight against Pathogenic Bacteria

Different forms of unmodified and modified Poly(ethylene glycols) (PEGs) are widely used as antifouling and antibacterial agents for biomedical industries and Nylon 6 is one of the polymers used for biomedical textiles. Our recent study focused on an efficient approach to PEG immobilization on a reduced Nylon 6 surface via N,N'-disuccinimidyl carbonate (DSC) conjugation. The conversion of amide functional groups to secondary amines on the Nylon 6 polymer surface was achieved by the reducing agent borane-tetrahydrofuran (BH3-THF) complex, before binding the PEG. Various techniques, including water contact angle and free surface energy measurements, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, were used to confirm the desired surface immobilization. Our findings indicated that PEG may be efficiently tethered to the Nylon 6 surface via DSC, having an enormous future potential for antifouling biomedical materials. The bacterial adhesion performances against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa were examined. In vitro cytocompatibility was successfully tested on pure, reduced, and PEG immobilized samples.
