Abstract
The wettability of the surface of hydrophilic cotton fabrics was modified using a one-step protocol with tannic acid (TA) to provide its excess catechol groups to be grafted with 1-eicosanamine at pH 8.5 and room temperature with catalysts CuSO4/H2O2. The modification over the synthesis conditions revised the contact angles of water and diiodomethane droplets from 132.68 ± 0.49° to 143.95 ± 0.80° and from 100.08°±1.42° to 82.96 ± 1.38°, respectively. The corresponding dispersive of the so-yielded cotton surface ranged from 8.6 to 16.0 mJ/m2, and the polar components ranged from 0.08 to 2.7 mJ/m2, much lower than polytetrafluoroethylene. The modified cotton fabrics are omniphobic and can repel water and commercial oil products. The absorption tests revealed that the modified cotton fabrics absorbed 1.10 g hexane/g cotton by contacting hexane (top)-water (bottom) layers and absorbed 1.26 g hexane/g cotton by contacting water first for 30 s, then hexane for another 30 s. The modified fabrics reveal good absorption reusability as hexane absorbent is even pre-saturated with water. This conclusion is also valid for commercial unleaded gasoline #95 and diesel. A parametric study revealed that the added catalysts and prolonged reaction time would enhance the hydrophobicity of the surface. These modified cotton fabrics can absorb oil from water and oil spills. Mechanisms corresponding to this observation are discussed.

Abstract
This study introduces a novel approach to develop a multifunctional coating on cotton fabric, emphasizing the utilization of cotton fiber as a biological macromolecule, by integrating a TiO2@g-C3N4 layered structure to confer superhydrophobic properties and multiple functionalities. The engineered structure not only enhances fabric roughness but also incorporates non-fluoro hydrophobic agents, thereby imparting diverse capabilities such as photocatalysis, oil-water separation, and self-cleaning to the cotton substrate. Fabrication of the TiO2@g-C3N4 layered structure involved ultrasonic dispersion of TiO2 and g-C3N4, subsequently deposited onto cotton fabric. Sequential hydrophobic treatment with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) achieved superhydrophobicity, exhibiting an exceptional water contact angle (WCA) of 157.9°. Comprehensive characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric validated the composite's structural and chemical properties. The introduced TiO2@g-C3N4 structure significantly enhanced fabric roughness, while PDMS treatment lowered surface energy and IPDI hydrolysis facilitated cross-linking, ensuring durability. The resultant TiO2@g-C3N4/PDMS cotton exhibited outstanding self-cleaning properties and demonstrated oil adsorption capacity, accommodating both heavy and light oils. Notably, this superhydrophobic cotton efficiently separated water-oil mixtures, achieving 96.8 % efficiency even after 10 cycles. Moreover, under simulated light, it displayed outstanding photocatalytic degradation (93.2 %) of methylene blue while maintaining a WCA of 150° post-degradation, highlighting sustained functionality. This innovation holds promise for sustainable applications, offering robust physical and chemical durability within the realm of biological macromolecules. The amalgamation of TiO2@g-C3N4 layered structure and PDMS treatment on cotton fabric underscores a sustainable approach to address water-oil separation challenges and enable efficient self-cleaning. This research demonstrates a significant step towards sustainable material applications and addresses pertinent real-world challenges in diverse technological domains.

Abstract
Highly hydrophobic flax fabrics with durable properties were prepared using the "dip-coating" method for self-cleaning application. Flax fabrics were coated with a polysiloxane coating via a hydrosilylation reaction with a Karstedt catalyst at room temperature. The coated fabrics displayed highly and durable hydrophobic properties (contact angle and sliding angle of about 145° and 23°, respectively) with good self-cleaning ability for certain pollutants and excellent durability. Moreover, the influence of the coating process on the mechanical properties of fabrics was investigated. A decrease in E modulus and an increase in tensile stress at maximum force and elongation at maximum force has been observed. Furthermore, this influence of the coating process can be easily controlled by adjusting the proportion of curing agent in the treatment solution.

Abstract
The superhydrophobic feature is highly desirable for oil/water separation (OWS) operation to achieve excellent separation efficiency. However, using hazardous materials in fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces is always the main concern. Herein, superhydrophobic filters were prepared via an eco-friendly approach by anchoring silica particles (SiO2) onto the cotton fabric surface, followed by surface coating using natural material-myristic acid via a dip coating method. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was used in the synthesis of SiO2 particles from the silica sol. In addition, the impact of the drying temperature on the wettability of the superhydrophobic filter was investigated. Moreover, the pristine cotton fabric and as-prepared superhydrophobic cotton filters were characterised based on Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and contact angle (CA) measurement. The superhydrophobic cotton filter was used to perform OWS using an oil-water mixture containing either chloroform, hexane, toluene, xylene or dichloroethane. The separation efficiency of the OWS using the superhydrophobic filter was as high as 99.9%. Moreover, the superhydrophobic fabric filter also demonstrated excellent durability, chemical stability, self-healing ability and reusability.

Abstract
Superhydrophobic coatings with excellent water-repellent properties imply a wide range of application areas. However, improvements are needed in terms of stability and complex processing procedures. In the present study, a superhydrophobic coating on Al sheets was prepared by mixing hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS)-modified SiO2 nanoparticles and acid-catalyzed silica sols (HD-SiO2/SiO2 Sol) with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) binder. The HD-SiO2 nanoparticles and acid-catalyzed silica sol (SiO2 sol) form a binary graded micro-nanostructure, providing excellent superhydrophobicity (Water Contact Angle = 158.5°, Sliding angle = 0°). Superhydrophobic coatings with excellent water-repellent properties have potential for corrosion prevention. However the commonly used organic resins have poor chemical and mechanical properties. In the present study, the results of outdoor exposure for 30 days, immersion in acid and alkaline solutions for 24 h, grit abrasion, and water impact experiments, respectively, showed that the prepared superhydrophobic coating has good wear resistance. The integrated superhydrophobic coating on the Al sheets exhibited good corrosion inhibition with an efficiency (η) of 98.9%, which is much higher than that of the uncoated sheets. The present study provides a promising approach for producing stable superhydrophobic coatings at a low cost, with the potential to supplant conventional organic resin anti-corrosion coatings.

Abstract
Considering the serious damage to aquatic ecosystems and marine life caused by oil spills and oily wastewater discharge, efficient, environment-friendly and sustainable oil/water separation technology has become an inevitable trend for current development. Herein, fabrics are recognized as eco-friendly materials for water treatment due to their good degradability and low cost. Particularly, fabrics with rough structures and natural hydrophilicity/oleophilicity enable the construction of superwetting surfaces for the selective separation of oil/water mixtures and even complex emulsions. Therefore, superwetting fabrics for efficiently solving oil spills and purifying oily wastewater have received extensive attention. Especially, Janus and smart fabrics are highly anticipated to enable the on-demand and sustainable treatment of oil spills and oily wastewater due to their changeable wettability. Moreover, the fabrication of superwetting fabrics with multifunctional performances for oily wastewater purification can further promote their practical industrial applications, such as photocatalytic, self-cleaning, and self-healing characteristics. However, some potential challenges still exist, which urgently need to be systematically summarized to guide the future development of this research field. In this review, firstly, the fundamental theories of wettability and the separation mechanisms based on special wettability are discussed. Then, superwetting fabrics for efficient oil/water separation are systematically reviewed, such as superhydrophobic/superoleophilic (SHB/SOL), superhydrophilic/superoleophobic (SHL/SOB), SHL/underwater superoleophobic (SHL/UWSOB), and UWSOB/underoil superoleophobic (UWSOB/UOSHB) fabrics. Most importantly, we highlight Janus, smart, and multifunctional fabrics based on their superwetting property. Correspondingly, the advantages and disadvantages of each superwetting fabric are comprehensively analyzed. Besides, super-antiwetting fabrics with superhydrophobic/superoleophobic (SHB/SOB) property are also introduced. Finally, the challenges and future research directions are explained.

Abstract
Limited durability and complex materials restrict the application of superhydrophobic fabrics in daily life. In this work, gellable fluorinated block copolymer poly(dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate)-block-poly(3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate) (PDFMA-b-PTEPM) was used to fabricate adhesive-free superhydrophobic poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics via a simple dip-coating technology and sol-gel reaction. The growth of silica nanoparticles builds up a rough hierarchical structure and provides sol-gel reaction sites of PTEPM segments. The grafting of block copolymer significantly reduced the surface free energy of the fabrics, resulting in an excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 160.2°. Benefiting from extensive chemical bond grafting and cross-linking of the PTEPM segment, the fabric exhibits excellent durability in mechanical abrasion, chemical treatment, and washing. The coating has withstood 50 sandpaper abrasion cycles and 400 soft friction cycles and can maintain superhydrophobic properties in various solvents, freezing and a wide pH range. These superhydrophobic fabrics with a long life span possess self-cleaning, anti-icing, oil-water separation, and self-healing capabilities. The multifunctional fabrics developed in this study are durable and easy to produce, possessing the potential for applications in industry and daily life.

Abstract
Oily wastewater and oil spills pose a threat to the environment and human health, and porous sponge materials are highly desired for oil/water separation. Herein, we design a new superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO2-decorated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge material for efficient oil/water separation. The TiO2-PVA sponge is obtained by firmly anchoring TiO2 nanoparticles onto the skeleton surface of pristine PVA sponge via the cross-linking reactions between TiO2 nanoparticles and H3BO3 and KH550, followed by the chemical modification of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane. The as-prepared TiO2-PVA sponge shows a high water contact angle of 157° (a sliding angle of 5.5°) and an oil contact angle of ∼0°, showing excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. The TiO2-PVA sponge exhibits excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of immersing it in the corrosive solutions and solvents, boiling it in water, and the sandpaper abrasion test. Moreover, the as-prepared TiO2-PVA sponge possesses excellent absorption capacity of oils or organic solvents ranging from 4.3 to 13.6 times its own weight. More importantly, the as-prepared TiO2-PVA sponge can separate carbon tetrachloride from the oil-water mixture with a separation efficiency of 97.8% with the aid of gravity and maintains a separation efficiency of 96.5% even after 15 cyclic oil/water separation processes. Therefore, the rationally designed superhydrophobic/superoleophilic TiO2-PVA sponge shows great potential in practical applications of dealing with oily wastewater and oil spills.

Abstract
This study reports a novel cross-linking approach to fabricate the hydrothermally neutralized silica hydrogel of SiO2-H3BO3-hexadecyltrimethoxysilane by grafting alkylsilane groups onto the nanoporous silica. The synthesized silica hydrogel possessed a large specific surface area of 51.3 m2g-1 and showed excellent dye adsorption capability of cationic dyes in neutral (pH 7) and alkaline (pH 9) medium from wastewater. The colloidal electrokinetic potential analysis revealed that the outstanding adsorption efficiency of cationic dyes over anionic dyes strongly relies on the surface charge of the hydrogels. Moreover, the hydrophobic interactions between the dye molecules and the hydrogels were studied, and it was found that the dye adsorption performance can be tuned by altering the concentration of hydrophobic reagents of the hydrogel. The dye adsorption mechanism was established, and the kinetic study suggested that the adsorption is a pseudo-second-order reaction. Adsorption isotherms at various equilibrium conditions fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm. Therefore, this strongly supports the promising and practical application of the prepared silica hydrogel. The recyclability of the hydrogel was studied, and it showed 90% adsorption efficiency by the regenerated gel up to 6 cycles, which has a high potential in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces show great potential in oil-water separation, anti-icing and self-cleaning. However, due to the instability caused by its fragile structure and non-durable superhydrophobicity, it is difficult to apply them in the actual field. Here, by introducing surface wettability and analysing the mechanism of superhydrophobic failure, it is concluded that the reason for the failure of the superhydrophobic surface comes from the transition of the surface energy and the hysteresis of the contact angle (CA). On the basis of this analysis, it is concluded that the principle of designing a durable superhydrophobic surface is to satisfy one of the following three points: improving the binding force between molecules, introducing durable materials and improving chemical durability. On this basis, a variety of preparation methods are proposed, such as assembly method and spray/dip coating method, and the design and preparation of a self-healing surface inspired by nature will also be included in the introduction. Last but not least, the preparation and application of a durable super-hydrophobic surface in oil-water separation, anti-icing and self-cleaning are also introduced in detail. This review reveals the conclusions and prospects of durable superhydrophobic surfaces, and aims to inspire more researchers to invest in this research.

Abstract
The use of toxic components and short longevity greatly restricted the commercial application of superhydrophobic surfaces in oil-water separation, antifouling, and self-cleaning. To address these concerns, a durable, robust, and fluorine-free superhydrophobic fabric is prepared on account of inspiration of nature. In this work, submicrometer-sized silica particles with different particle sizes are deposited onto cotton fabrics, followed by hydrophobic modification of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), and consequently bonded the substrate and coating via powerful covalent bonds through a simple dip-coating technique. The rough surface with an imitated lotus-leaf-like hierarchical protrusion structure is constructed by deposited submicrometer-sized particles with different particle sizes, while the fabric with a low surface energy is achieved by the hydrophobic modification of PDMS. Ultimately, the fabricated fabric exhibits extraordinary superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle (WCA) of 161° and a small sliding hysteresis angle (SHA) of 2.4°. Besides, considerable mechanical stability to withstand 130 sandpaper abrasion cycles and 40 washing cycles, and chemical resistance with sustained superhydrophobic property in various harsh environments (e.g., boiling water, strong acid/base solutions, and various organic solvents), are presented. Moreover, higher than 90% separation efficiency with a contact angle >150 ° is produced even after 50 cycles when the fabricated fabric serves as a filter during the oil-water separation besides its outstanding staining resistance and self-cleaning property.

Effect of silylating agents on the superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties of siloxane/polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite coatings on cellulosic fabric filters for oil-water separation. Abstract
A new facile approach for preparing two nonfluorinated hybrid organic-inorganic siloxane/polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite coatings for cotton fabrics is presented using two distinct silylating agents. The first coated fabric was prepared predominantly via trimethylsilyl modification using hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) while higher amounts of trimethoxy(octadecyl)silane (TMOS) further enhanced the superhydrophobicity of the second coating matrix. Unlike HMDS with substituted silyl (Me3Si) groups, TMOS consists of hydrolysable trimethoxy silyl ((MeO)3Si) chemical groups that allowed for the formation of nanosilica with Si-O-Si linkages needed to foster stable coatings. After characterization and testing, these coated fabrics demonstrated varying responses to harsh solvents and thermal conditions. Both sets of coated fabrics exhibited unique capacities for self-cleaning and oil-water separation as superhydrophobic filters due to (a) their low surface energy silylated hybrid polysiloxane chemical groups, (b) their highly reduced surface wettability and (c) nanopatterned surface morphologies. In this study, coated superhydrophobic cotton fabrics revealed a higher static aqueous contact angle of more than 150° and sliding hysteresis angle of less than 5°. Coated fabrics with 30 mg TMOS/10 mg HMDS (CMF3) and 30 mg HMDS/10 mg TMOS (CTF3) exhibited optimal superhydrophobicity. Both fabrics also retained percentage separation efficiencies over 90% for both chloroform-water and toluene-water mixtures. However, CTF3 displayed with a recorded separation efficiency less than 90° after five filtration cycles.
