Facile preparation of a phenolic aerogel with excellent flexibility for thermal insulation

In vitro digestion of starch and protein aerogels generated from defatted rice bran via supercritical carbon dioxide drying

This study investigated the in vitro digestibility of starch and protein aerogels produced from defatted rice bran (DRB), an underutilized rice processing byproduct, using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) drying. The extracted starch (i.e., purified starch), crude starch, and proteins were used for the aerogel formation at 15% (w/w) concentration and further characterized. All aerogels exhibited three-dimensional open porous structures with high surface areas of 36-47 m2/g, densities lower than 0.3 g/cm3, and porosities higher than 84%. The starch hydrolyses in starch and crude starch aerogels were 86 and 73%, respectively, while the protein hydrolysis in protein aerogels reached up to 82% after sequential oral, gastric, and intestinal digestion. Thus, the hydrolysis rates achieved in simulated digestions suggest that the developed aerogels from DRB have the potential to serve as vehicles for delivering bioactive compounds and add value to the underutilized DRB.

Improving Pore Characteristics, Mechanical Properties and Thermal Performances of Near-Net Shape Manufacturing Phenolic Resin Aerogels

Thermally stable high-performance phenolic resin aerogels (PRAs) are of great interest for thermal insulation because of their light weight, fire retardancy and low thermal conductivity. However, the drawbacks of PRA synthesis, such as long processing time, inherent brittleness and significant shrinkage during drying, greatly restrict their wide applications. In this work, PRAs were synthesized at ambient pressure through a near-net shape manufacturing technique, where boron-containing thermosetting phenolic resin (BPR) was introduced into the conventional linear phenolic resin (LPR) to improve the pore characteristics, mechanical properties and thermal performances. Compared with the traditional LPR-synthesized aerogel, the processing time and the linear shrinkage rate during the drying of the PRAs could be significantly reduced, which was attributed to the enhanced rigidity and the unique bimodal pore size distribution. Furthermore, no catastrophic failure and almost no mechanical degradation were observed on the PRAs, even with a compressive strain of up to 60% at temperatures ranging from 25 to 200 °C, indicating low brittleness and excellent thermo-mechanical stability. The PRAs also showed outstanding fire retardancy. On the other hand, the PRAs with a density of 0.194 g/cm3 possessed a high Young's modulus of 12.85 MPa and a low thermal conductivity of 0.038 W/(m·K).

Lightweight, Flexible, and Covalent-Bonding Phenolic Fabric Reinforced Phenolic Ablator for Thermal Insulation and Conformal Infrared Stealth

Fiber-reinforced phenolic resin aerogel (FRPRA) composite materials are seductive candidates for high-temperature thermal protection owing to their low density, excellent thermostability, and thermal insulation. However, the intrinsic stiffness restricts their further application for high efficiency. We report a homogeneous and chemical bonding strategy for fabricating lightweight and flexible FRPRA with good ablative thermal insulation performance. The compressible (cyclic strain of 60%) and bendable (cyclic strain of 30%) abilities as well as the structural stability during ablation all benefit from the compatibility between the phenolic resin aerogel matrix and the phenolic fiber reinforcement. Additionally, low bulk density and thermal conductivity of 0.20 g cm-3 and 0.043 W m-1 K-1, respectively, endow the composite with efficient thermal insulation capability. With an 8 mm-thick coupon, the temperature of 200 °C can be decreased to 70.6 °C and the temperature around 1200 °C can be camouflaged to 78 °C through combining with the Al panel. The material also enables a conformal stealth of 600 °C based on its bendability. Hence, the composite has potential in applications of both static and dynamic thermal insulation.

Flexible Hybrid and Single-Component Aerogels: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications

The inherent disadvantages of traditional nonflexible aerogels, such as high fragility and moisture sensitivity, severely restrict their applications. To address these issues, different techniques have been used to incorporate the flexibility in aerogel materials; hence, the term "flexible aerogels" was introduced. In the case of introducing flexibility, the organic part is induced with the inorganic part (flexible hybrid aerogels). Additionally, some more modern research is also available in the fabrication of hybrid flexible aerogels (based on organic-organic), the combination of two organic polymers. Moreover, a new type (single-component flexible aerogels) are quite a new category composed of only single materials; this category is very limited, charming to make the flexible aerogels pure from single polymers. The present review is composed of modern techniques and studies available to fabricate hybrid and single-component flexible aerogels. Their synthesis, factors affecting their parameters, and limitations associated with them are explained deeply. Moreover, a comparative analysis of drying methods and their effectiveness in the development of structures are described in detail. The further sections explain their properties and characterization methods. Eventually, their applications in a variety of multifunctional fields are covered. This article will support to introduce the roadmap pointing to a future direction in the production of the single-component flexible aerogel materials and their applications.

Superelastic chitin nanofibril/chitosan aerogel for effective circulating and continuous oil-water separation

Elastic and hydrophobic aerogels have received a lot of attention in dealing with the increasing oil pollution due to their recyclable properties. Herein, we present an ultralight and superelastic aerogel with highly oriented polygon structure based on chitin nanofibril (ChNF) and chitosan (CS) by directional freezing. The chemical cross-linking enables good mechanical strength at low aerogel density. After 500 compression-release cycles, the aerogel can retain the deformation recovery rate of 88 % in air, demonstrating the excellent resilience. The bio-based aerogel has high absorption capacity (52-114 g/g) for various oils and organic solvents, and it is able to achieve the absorption retention of 90 % even after 20 absorption-extrusion cycles. Moreover, owing to the good elasticity, the pore size of the aerogel can be adjusted by compression to selectively separate water-in-oil emulsions of different particle sizes with separation efficiencies higher than 99.5 %. The bio-based aerogel with good cycle performance has broad application prospects in the field of oil-water separation.

Carbon Aerogels as Electrocatalysts for Sustainable Energy Applications: Recent Developments and Prospects

Carbon aerogel (CA) based materials have multiple advantages, including high porosity, tunable molecular structures, and environmental compatibility. Increasing interest, which has focused on CAs as electrocatalysts for sustainable applications including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) has recently been raised. However, a systematic review covering the most recent progress to boost CA-based electrocatalysts for ORR/OER/HER/CO₂RR is now absent. To eliminate the gap, this critical review provides a timely and comprehensive summarization of the applications, synthesis methods, and principles. Furthermore, prospects for emerging synthesis, screening, and construction methods are outlined.
