Heteroatoms co-doped porous carbons from amino acid based polybenzoxazine for superior CO2 adsorption and electrochemical performances

Bio-Based Thermosetting Resins: From Molecular Engineering to Intrinsically Multifunctional Customization

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in bio-based thermosetting resins in terms of environmental concerns and the desire for sustainable industrial practices. Beyond sustainability, utilizing the structural diversity of renewable feedstock to craft bio-based thermosets with customized functionalities is very worthy of expectation. There exist many bio-based compounds with inherently unique chemical structures and functions, some of which are even difficult to synthesize artificially. Over the past decade, great efforts are devoted to discovering/designing functional properties of bio-based thermosets, and notable progress have been made in antibacterial, antifouling, flame retardancy, serving as carbon precursors, and stimuli responsiveness, among others, largely expanding their application potential and future prospects. In this review, recent advances in the field of functional bio-based thermosets are presented, with a particular focus on molecular structures and design strategies for discovering functional properties. Examples are highlighted wherein functionalities are facilitated by the inherent structures of bio-based feedstock. Perspectives on issues regarding further advances in this field are proposed at the end.

CO2 Adsorption on N-Doped Porous Biocarbon Synthesized from Biomass Corncobs in Simulated Flue Gas

This study was to develop a low-cost N-doped porous biocarbon adsorbent that can directly adsorb CO₂ in high-temperature flue gas from fossil fuel combustion. The porous biocarbon was prepared by nitrogen doping and nitrogen-oxygen codoping through K₂CO₃ activation. Results showed that these samples exhibited a high specific surface area of 1209-2307 m²/g with a pore volume of 0.492-0.868 cm³/g and a nitrogen content of 0.41-3.3 wt %. The optimized sample CNNK-1 exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 1.30 and 0.27 mmol/g in the simulated flue gas (14.4 vol % CO₂ + 85.6 vol % N₂) and a high CO₂/N₂ selectivity of 80 and 20 at 25 and 100 °C and 1 bar, respectively. Studies revealed that too many microporous pores could hinder CO₂ diffusion and adsorption due to the decrease of CO₂ partial pressure and thermodynamic driving force in the simulated flue gas. The CO₂ adsorption of the samples was mainly chemical adsorption at 100 °C, which depended on the surface nitrogen functional groups. Nitrogen functional groups (pyridinic-N and primary and secondary amines) reacted chemically with CO₂ to produce graphitic-N, pyrrolic-like structures, and carboxyl functional groups (-N-COOH). Nitrogen and oxygen codoping increased the amount of nitrogen doping content in the sample, but acidic oxygen functional groups (carboxyl groups, lactones, and phenols) were introduced, which weakened the acid-base interactions between the sample and CO₂ molecules. It was demonstrated that SO₂ and water vapor had inhibition effects on CO₂ adsorption, while NO nearly has no effect on the complex flue gas. Cyclic regenerative adsorption showed that CNNK-1 possessed excellent regeneration and stabilization ability in complex flue gases, indicating that corncob-derived biocarbon had excellent CO₂ adsorption in high-temperature flue gas.

A Systematic Review of Amino Acid-Based Adsorbents for CO2 Capture

The rise of carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere emphasises the need for improving the current carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. A conventional absorption method that utilises amine-based solvent is known to cause corrosion to process equipment. The solvent is easily degraded and has high energy requirement for regeneration. Amino acids are suitable candidates to replace traditional alkanolamines attributed to their identical amino functional group. In addition, amino acid salt is a green material due to its extremely low toxicity, low volatility, less corrosive, and high efficiency to capture CO2. Previous studies have shown promising results in CO2 capture using amino acids salts solutions and amino acid ionic liquids. Currently, amino acid solvents are also utilised to enhance the adsorption capacity of solid sorbents. This systematic review is the first to summarise the currently available amino acid-based adsorbents for CO2 capture using PRISMA method. Physical and chemical properties of the adsorbents that contribute to effective CO2 capture are thoroughly discussed. A total of four categories of amino acid-based adsorbents are evaluated for their CO2 adsorption capacities. The regeneration studies are briefly discussed and several limitations associated with amino acid-based adsorbents for CO2 capture are presented before the conclusion.

Development of Uniform Porous Carbons From Polycarbazole Phthalonitriles as Durable CO2 Adsorbent and Supercapacitor Electrodes

Advances in new porous materials have recognized great consideration in CO2 capture and electrochemical energy storage (EES) applications. In this study, we reported a synthesis of two nitrogen-enriched KOH-activated porous carbons prepared from polycarbazole phthalonitrile networks through direct pyrolysis protocol. The highest specific surface area of the carbon material prepared by pyrolysis of p-4CzPN polymer reaches 1,279 m2 g-1. Due to the highly rigid and reticular structure of the precursor, the obtained c-4CzPN-KOH carbon material exhibits high surface area, uniform porosity, and shows excellent CO2 capture performance of 19.5 wt% at 0°C. Moreover, the attained porous carbon c-4CzPN-KOH showed high energy storage capacities of up to 451 F g-1 in aqueous electrolytes containing 6.0 M KOH at a current density of 1 A g-1. The prepared carbon material also exhibits excellent charge/discharge cycle stability and retains 95.9% capacity after 2000 cycles, indicating promising electrode materials for supercapacitors.
