Comparison of Mechano- and PhotoATRP with ZnO Nanocrystals

Zinc oxide (ZnO) was previously reported as an excellent cocatalyst for mechanically controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (mechanoATRP), but its photocatalytic properties in photoinduced ATRP (photoATRP) have been much less explored. Herein, well-defined ZnO nanocrystals were prepared via microwave-assisted synthesis and applied as a heterogeneous cocatalyst in mechano- and photoATRP. Both techniques yielded polymers with outstanding control over the molecular weight, but ZnO-cocatalyzed photoATRP was much faster than analogous mechanoATRP (conversion of 91% in 1 h vs 54% in 5 h). The kinetics of photoATRP was tuned by loadings of ZnO nanocrystals. PhotoATRP with ZnO did not require any excess of ligand versus Cu, in contrast to mechanoATRP, requiring an excess of ligand, acting as a reducing agent. ZnO-cocatalyzed photoATRP proceeded controllably without prior deoxygenation, since ZnO was involved in a cascade of reactions, leading to the rapid elimination of oxygen. The versatility and robustness of the technique were demonstrated for various (meth)acrylate monomers with good temporal control and preservation of end-group functionality, illustrated by the formation of tailored block copolymers.

Preparation of Xanthene-TEMPO Dyads: Synthesis and Study of the Radical Enhanced Intersystem Crossing

We prepared a rhodamine-TEMPO chromophore-radical dyad (RB-TEMPO) to study the radical enhanced intersystem crossing (REISC). The visible light-harvesting chromophore rhodamine is connected with the TEMPO (a nitroxide radical) via a C-N bond. The UV-vis absorption spectrum indicates negligible electron interaction between the two units at the ground state. Interestingly, the fluorescence of the rhodamine moiety is strongly quenched in RB-TEMPO, and the fluorescence lifetime of the rhodamine moiety is shortened to 0.29 ns, from the lifetime of 3.17 ns. We attribute this quenching effect to the intramolecular electron spin-spin interaction between the nitroxide radical and the photoexcited rhodamine chromophore. Nanosecond transient absorption spectra confirm the REISC in RB-TEMPO, indicated by the detection of the rhodamine chromophore triplet excited state; the lifetime was determined as 128 ns, which is shorter than the native rhodamine triplet state lifetime (0.58 μs). The zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters of the triplet state of the chromophore were determined with the pulsed laser excited time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra. RB-TEMPO was used as a photoinitiator for the photopolymerization of pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA). These studies are useful for the design of heavy atom-free triplet photosensitizers, the study of the ISC, and the electron spin dynamics of the radical-chromophore systems upon photoexcitation.

Magnetic nanoparticle-supported eosin Y salt [SB-DABCO@eosin] as an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst for the multi-component synthesis of chromeno[4,3-b]chromene in the presence of visible light

Heterogeneous photocatalysts present a favourable procedure to realize green and eco-friendly organic reactions. We have demonstrated an SB-DABCO@eosin catalyst in a green one-pot multi-component protocol for the production of various chromeno[4,3-b]chromenes via condensation of aromatic aldehydes and dimedone under the photo-redox catalyst bearing eosin Y using visible light. The synthesized nanocatalyst was characterized using various physicochemical techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, EDX, UV-vis, SEM, TGA and DRS. The significant advantages of the present methodology include excellent yield, cost-effectiveness, easy work-up, 100% atom economy, broad substrate scope, easy separation and efficient recycling. Furthermore, the evidence showed that the investigated condensation reaction proceeds via a radical mechanism, which proved the need for reactive species such as OH˙ and ˙O2 - in the photocatalytic process. In addition to the improved handling and process control, the yield of products and the rate of reactions have increased considerably in the present strategy. Reproducibility studies also guarantee good reusability and stability of the nanocatalyst for at least five runs.
