Talonavicular synostosis with lateral ankle instability--A case report and review of the literature

Bilateral Multiple Tarsal Coalitions (Talonavicular and Talocalcaneal Coalitions) with Recurrent Ankle Sprain in an Adolescent

Tarsal coalition is defined as an abnormal bony, cartilaginous, or fibrous union of two or more tarsal bones. The incidence of tarsal coalition is approximately 2% in the general population. Talocalcaneal and calcaneonavicular coalitions are the most common. The talonavicular coalition is a rare entity with an incidence of approximately 1.3% among patients with tarsal coalitions. We present a case of a 12-year-old girl who had talonavicular and talocalcaneal coalitions associated with a recurrent ankle sprain. The talonavicular coalition was asymptomatic, and the talocalcaneal coalition was the cause of ankle pain and recurrent sprain. Surgical resection of the talocalcaneal coalition led to successful clinical and functional outcomes. In conclusion, the possibility of multiple tarsal coalitions should be considered in tarsal coalition patients, and the talocalcaneal coalition should be considered as a differential diagnosis in an adolescent patient with a recurrent ankle sprain.

Bilateral Triple Talocalcaneal, Calcaneonavicular, and Talonavicular Tarsal Coalition: A Case Report

We report a rare case of a female, aged 42 years, with symptomatic bilateral triple tarsal coalition, that is, talocalcaneal, calcaneonavicular, and talonavicular tarsal coalition. The patient was treated conservatively by adjusting her activities. At the 12-month follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic. Bilateral triple tarsal coalition is a rare disorder, especially in nonsyndromic patients. The purpose of this case report was to highlight this rare type of multiple bilateral tarsal coalitions and to discuss the relevant existing literature.

An incidental talonavicular coalition in a diabetic patient: a podiatric perspective

A tarsal coalition is a pathological union of two or more tarsal bones. The authors present an incidental finding of a unilateral talonavicular (TN) coalition that was overlooked in a 57-year-old diabetic female with signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. This case highlights the clinical implications and important teaching points in recognising a TN coalition. This is particularly relevant for new, upcoming clinicians who may have never been exposed to this diagnostic rarity during clinical training.

Consensus in chronic ankle instability: aetiology, assessment, surgical indications and place for arthroscopy

Ankle sprains are the most common injuries sustained during sports activities. Most ankle sprains recover fully with non-operative treatment but 20-30% develop chronic ankle instability. Predicting which patients who sustain an ankle sprain will develop instability is difficult. This paper summarises a consensus on identifying which patients may require surgery, the optimal surgical intervention along with treatment of concomitant pathology given the evidence available today. It also discusses the role of arthroscopic treatment and the anatomical basis for individual procedures.
