Abstract
PURPOSE To test the use of rainbow trout skin as a surgical mesh in abdominal hernioplasties in rats. METHODS The experiment involved 20 Wistar rats receiving implants of trout skin processed for disinfection in 0.5% glutaraldehyde and preserved in 100% glycerin. The animals were divided into four groups, divided at 7, 15, 30, and 90 days postoperatively. Clinical and infrared thermography evaluations were performed, and after euthanasia, assessments of adhesion formations and sample collection for histological evaluation were conducted. RESULTS The implant was observed to be intact, ensuring the integrity of the abdominal wall, support for the viscera, and normal mobility for the rats for up to 90 days. Low rates of clinical alterations were observed, with an intense inflammatory reaction up to day 7, chronic inflammation and the onset of angiogenesis at day 15, and a low inflammatory reaction with collagenous infiltrate and fibrosis at day 30. At day 90, the implants showed a collagenous and fibrotic infiltrate with a minimal inflammatory infiltrate. CONCLUSIONS The surgical mesh of trout skin performed well, making it a potential alternative for surgical procedures in muscle aponeurotic corrections in the abdominal wall.

Abstract
In this study, a series of collagen-chitosan-eugenol (CO-CS-Eu) flow-casting composite films were prepared using collagen from sturgeon skin, chitosan, and eugenol. The physicochemical properties, mechanical properties, microstructure, as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the composite membranes were investigated by various characterization techniques. The findings revealed that the inclusion of eugenol augmented the thickness of the film, darkened its color, reduced the transparency, and enhanced the ultraviolet light-blocking capabilities, with the physicochemical properties of the CO-CS-0.25%Eu film being notably favorable. Eugenol generates increasingly intricate matrices that disperse within the system, thereby modifying the optical properties of the material. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the film decreased from 70.97 to 20.32 MPa, indicating that eugenol enhances the fluidity and ductility of the film. Added eugenol also exhibited structural impact by loosening the film cross-section and decreasing its density. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed the occurrence of several intermolecular interactions among collagen, chitosan, and eugenol. Moreover, the incorporation of eugenol bolstered the antioxidant and antimicrobial capabilities of the composite film. This is primarily attributed to the abundant phenolic/hydroxyl groups present in eugenol, which can react with free radicals by forming phenoxy groups and neutralizing hydroxyl groups. Consequently, inclusion of eugenol substantially enhances the freshness retention performance of the composite film. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: ● The CO-CS-Eu film utilizes collagen from sturgeon skin, improving the use of sturgeon resources.● Different concentrations of eugenol altered its synergistic effect with chitosan.● The CO-CS-Eu film is composed of natural products with safe and edible properties.

Abstract
Fish processing provides waste of around 50.0% to 70.0% of the animal's initial weight, especially the skin. Thus, this residue contains the by-product that allows biopolymers to be obtained, highlighting collagen, which can be widely used in different areas. The present study aimed to evaluate the yield of collagen extracted from peacock bass Cichla monoculus skin and to characterize them physicochemically. Twenty-five peacock bass with an average weight of 646 ± 175 g were used. The skin samples were removed by manual filleting and weighed, with an average yield of 3.7%. Subsequently, such models were analyzed for chemical composition, showing 61.8% for moisture, 29.3% for crude protein, 1.5% for ash, 6.3% for total lipids, and 1.2% for non-nitrogenous extract (NNE). Acid-soluble collagen (ASC) presented an average yield of 8.2%, presenting in its analysis of centesimal composition 12.5% of moisture, 82.6% of crude protein, 1.1% of ash, 2.6% of total lipids, and 1.2% NNE. The skin and collagen extracted from the tucunaré skin have technological potential for use in the preparation of products, adding value to these by-products from fish processing.

Abstract
The present study investigated the impact of quinoa protein (QP) on the physicochemical properties, sensory quality, and oxidative stability of myofibrillar protein (MP) in pork patties during five freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles. It was observed that repeated F-T cycles resulted in a deterioration of pork patty quality; however, the incorporation of QP effectively mitigated these changes. Throughout the F-T cycles, the sensory quality of the QP-treated group consistently surpassed that of the control group. After five F-T cycles, the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) content in the control group was measured at 0.423 mg/kg, whereas it significantly decreased to 0.347 mg/kg in the QP-treated group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, QP inclusion led to a decrease in pH and an increase in water-holding capacity (WHC) within pork patties. Following five F-T cycles, Ca2+-ATPase activity exhibited a significant increase of 11.10% in the QP-treated group compared to controls (p < 0.05). Additionally, supplementation with QP resulted in elevated total sulfhydryl content and reduced carbonyl content, Schiff base content, and dityrosine content within myofibrillar proteins (MPs), indicating its inhibitory effect on MP oxidation. In particular, after five F-T cycles, total sulfhydryl content reached 58.66 nmol/mL for the QP-treated group significantly higher than that observed for controls at 43.65 nmol/mL (p < 0.05). While carbonyl content increased from 2.37 nmol/mL to 4.63 nmol/mL between the first and fifth F-T cycle for controls; it only rose from 2.15 nmol/mL to 3.47 nmol/mL in the QP-treated group. The endogenous fluorescence levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the QP-treated group compared to controls. In conclusion, the addition of QP enhanced the quality of pork patties and effectively inhibited the oxidative denaturation of MP during F-T cycles.

Abstract
(1) Background: Collagen and sodium alginate are commonly used in the field of biomedical materials due to their excellent biocompatibility. This study focuses on the preparation, modification, and characterization of collagen/sodium alginate (C/SA)-based biomedical materials. (2) Methods: The characteristics, including surface chemistry, mechanical properties, hygroscopicity, and porosity, were analyzed. The hemostatic activity in vitro was measured using a blood clotting assay and dynamic blood clotting assay. (3) Results: The results from microstructure and porosity measurement revealed that all of the sponges exhibited a porosity of more than 95 percent. The sponge cross-linked with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) showed better tensile strength and lower elongation at break. The sponges cross-linked with EDC/NHS and oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) exhibited the highest hygroscopicity in comparison with the uncross-linked sponge. (4) Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the C/SA-based material we prepared exhibited a high level of porosity, enabling efficient absorption of tissue exudate and blood. Additionally, the materials revealed excellent hemocompatibility, making them suitable for use as a hemostatic dressing in the field of biomedical materials.

Abstract
Pushed by the environmental pollution and health hazards of plastic packaging, the development of biodegradable food packaging films (FPFs) is a necessary and sustainable trend for social development. Most protein molecules have excellent film-forming properties as natural polymer matrices, and the assembled films have excellent barrier properties, but show defects such as low water resistance and poor mechanical properties. In order to improve the performance of protein-based films, transglutaminase (TG) is used as a safe and green cross-linking (CL) agent. This work covers recent developments on TG cross-linked protein-based FPFs, mainly comprising proteins of animal and plant origin, including gelatin, whey protein, zein, soy proteins, bitter vetch protein, etc. The chemical properties and reaction mechanism of TG are briefly introduced, focusing on the effects of TG CL on the physicochemical properties of different protein-based FPFs, including barrier properties, water resistance, mechanical properties and thermal stability. It is concluded that the addition of TG can significantly improve the physical and mechanical properties of protein-based films, mainly improving their water resistance, barrier, mechanical and thermal properties. It is worth noting that the effect of TG on the properties of protein-based films is not only related to the concentration of TG added, but also related to CL temperature and other factors. Moreover, TG can also be used in combination with other strategies to improve the properties of protein-based films.

Abstract
The immobilized enzymes' properties can be affected by cross-linkers on the surface of supports. To study how cross-linkers alter enzymes function, chitosan-coated magnetic nanoparticles (CMNPs) with immobilized papain were prepared using glutaraldehyde and or genipin, and then, the properties of the nanoparticles and the immobilized enzymes were assessed. The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results showed that the CMNPs were prepared and papain molecules were immobilized on CMNPs by glutaraldehyde (CMNP-Glu-Papain) or by genipin (CMNP-Gen-Papain). Also, the results associated with enzymes activity indicated that the immobilization by glutaraldehyde and genipin increased the pH optimum of papain from 7 to 7.5 and 9, respectively. The kinetic results indicated that the immobilization by genipin slightly affects the enzyme affinity to the substrate. The stability results showed that CMNP-Gen-Papain has more thermal stability than CMNP-Glu-Papain and papain immobilization on CMNPs by genipin leads to stabilization of the enzyme in the presence of polar solvents, probably due to the more hydroxyl groups on CMNPs activated by genipin. In conclusion, this study suggests that there is a relationship between the types of cross-linker on the surface of supports, and the mechanism of action, kinetic parameters, and the stability of immobilized papain.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease, affecting 32.5 million US adults or 242 million people worldwide. There is no cure for OA. Many animal and clinical trials showed that oral administration of undenatured type II collagen could significantly reduce the incidence of OA or alleviate the symptoms of articular cartilage. Type II collagen is an important component of cartilage matrix. This article reviewed research progress of undenatured type II collagen including its methods of extraction and preparation, structure and characterization, solubility, thermal stability, gastrointestinal digestive stability, its role in improving OA, and the mechanism of its action in improving OA. Type II collagen has been extensively explored for its potential in improving arthritis. Methods of extraction of type II collagen are inefficient and tedious. The method of limited enzymatic hydrolysis is mainly used to prepare soluble undenatured type II collagen (SC II). The solubility, thermal and gastrointestinal digestive stability of SC II are affected by the sources of raw material, pH, salt ions, and temperature. Oral administration of undenatured type II collagen improves OA, whereas its activity is affected by the sources, degree of denaturalization, intervention methods and doses. However, the influence of the structure of undenatured type II collagen on its activity and the mechanism are unclear. The findings in this review support that undenatured type II collagen can be used in the intervention or auxiliary intervention of patients with OA.

Abstract
Collagens from marine sources have been used widely in food, cosmetics and tissue engineering application due to their excellent functional and biological properties. In the present study, a novel protein, collagen from iris squid skin (SSC) was characterized, grafted with polyethylene-glycol (PEG) and Acid-Green 20 (AG) and was investigated the molecular signaling pathways in L-929 fibroblast cells along with their structural peptide analogs. SDS-PAGE and IR spectrum of SSC analysis showed the typical structure of type I collagen. The fibroblast proliferation was evaluated for SSC, SSC grafted PEG (SSC-PEG) and their structural analogs including Gly-Pro-Leu-Gly-Leu-Leu (PEP1), Gly-Pro-Leu-Gly-Leu-Leu-Gly-Phe-Leu (PEP2), Gly-Pro-Leu-Gly-Leu-Leu-Gly-Phe-Leu-Gly-Pro-Leu (PEP3) and Gly-Pro-Leu-Gly-Leu-Leu-Gly-Phe-Leu-Gly-Pro-Leu-Gly-Leu-Ser (PEP4). The optimal concentration of SSC and its derivative was 0.07 μ mol/L. The fibroblast growth-promoting factors were promoted by all the treatment groups by accelerating the PI3K/AKT and Ras/RAF/MAPK signaling pathways in L-929 cells, and inhibiting the secretion of apoptotic factors. Compared to the control group, mRNA and protein expression of AKT in the PI3K/AKT and Ras in Ras/RAF/MAPK signaling pathway were accelerated significantly by PEP4, respectively, while the Bax value was significantly lower (P < 0.01). The promoting effect of PEP1, PEP2, PEP3 and PEP4 on L-929 cells was closely related to the length of the peptides. Therefore, this study disclosed that PEP1, PEP2, PEP3 and PEP4 were novel analogs that greatly promote the proliferation of L-929 cells through PI3K/AKT and Ras/RAF/MAPK signaling pathways.

Abstract
Collagen is the major structural protein in extracellular matrix present in connective tissues, including skin, being considered a promising material for skin regeneration. Marine organisms have been attracting interest amongst the industry as an alternative collagen source. In the present work, Atlantic codfish skin collagen was analyzed, to evaluate its potential for skincare. The collagen was extracted from two different skin batches (food industry by-product) using acetic acid (ASColl), confirming the method reproducibility since no significant yield differences were observed. The extracts characterization confirmed a profile compatible with type I collagen, without significant differences between batches or with bovine skin collagen (a reference material in biomedicine). Thermal analyses suggested ASColl's native structure loss at 25 °C, and an inferior thermal stability to bovine skin collagen. No cytotoxicity was found for ASColl up to 10 mg/mL in keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). ASColl was used to develop membranes, which revealed smooth surfaces without significative morphological or biodegradability differences between batches. Their water absorption capacity and water contact angle indicated a hydrophilic feature. The metabolic activity and proliferation of HaCaT were improved by the membranes. Hence, ASColl membranes exhibited attractive characteristics to be applied in the biomedical and cosmeceutical field envisaging skincare.

Abstract
A new generation of antimicrobial film was developed by incorporation of ulvan extracted from Ulva intestinalis into gelatin from common carp scale and its water sensitivity was reduced with addition of beeswax. Optimum composition of gelatin (0-100%w/w), ulvan (0-100%w/w) and beeswax (0-10%w/w) for achieving composite films with minimum water solubility (S) and water vapor permeability (WVP) and maximum tensile strength (TS), elongation at break point (EAB) and antibacterial effect on E. coli (EC) were investigated using mixture design methodology. Both pure gelatin and ulvan films and their composites had relatively good mechanical and optical properties. Addition of ulvan to gelatin produced composite films with good antibacterial properties but water resistance of all the films was weak. Addition of beeswax up to ∼5 % improved the water resistance and mechanical properties of the films without jeopardizing their antibacterial properties. The final optimum formulation with a desirability of 0.709 was achieved as 52.18 % of gelatin, 40.83 % of ulvan and 6.97 % of beeswax resulting in a minimum possible S (40 %) and WVP (1.86 10-10 g/ms Pa) and maximum possible TS (6.23 MPa) and EAB (89 %) with good EC (7.66 mm). Finally, good mechanical, thermal and microstructural properties of the optimum composite film was confirmed. Altogether, a combination of ulvan and beeswax can be a promising solution for development of gelatin films with both antimicrobial properties and lower water sensitivity.

Abstract
Due to the high moisture-associated typical rheology and the changeable and harsh processing conditions in the production process, packaging materials for meat products have higher requirements including a sufficient mechanical strength and proper ductility. Collagen, a highly conserved structural protein consisting of a triple helix of Gly-X-Y repeats, has been proved to be suitable packaging material for meat products. The treated animal digestive tract (i.e. the casing) is the perfect natural packaging material for wrapping meat into sausage. Its thin walls, strong toughness and impact resistance make it the oldest and best edible meat packaging. Collagen casing is another wisdom of meat packaging, which is made by collagen fibers from hide skin, presenting a rapid growth in casing market. To strengthen mechanical strength and barrier behaviors of collagen-based packaging materials, different physical, chemical, and biological cross-linking methods are springing up exuberantly, as well as a variety of reinforcement approaches including nanotechnology. In addition, the rapid development of biomimetic technology also provides a good research idea and means for the promotion of collagen's assembly and relevant mechanical properties. This review can offer some reference on fundamental theory and practical application of collagenous materials in meat products.

Abstract
In the recent decade, marine origin products have been growingly studied as building blocks complying with the constant demand of the biomedical sector regarding the development of new devices for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (TERM). In this work, several combinations of marine collagen-chitosan-fucoidan hydrogel were formed using a newly developed eco-friendly compressive and absorption methodology to produce hydrogels (CAMPH), which consists of compacting the biopolymers solution while removing the excess of water. The hydrogel formulations were prepared by blending solutions of 5% collagen from jellyfish and/or 3% collagen from blue shark skin, with solutions of 3% chitosan from squid pens and solutions of 10% fucoidan from brown algae, at different ratios. The biopolymer physico-chemical characterization comprised Amino Acid analysis, ATR-FTIR, CD, SDS-PAGE, ICP, XRD, and the results suggested the shark/jellyfish collagen(s) conserved the triple helical structure and had similarities with type I and type II collagen, respectively. The studied collagens also contain a denaturation temperature of around 30-32 °C and a molecular weight between 120 and 125 kDa. Additionally, the hydrogel properties were determined by rheology, water uptake ability, degradation rate, and SEM, and the results showed that all formulations had interesting mechanical (strong viscoelastic character) and structural stability properties, with a significant positive highlight in the formulation of H3 (blending all biopolymers, i.e., 5% collagen from jellyfish, 3% collagen from skin shark, 3% chitosan and 10% of fucoidan) in the degradation test, that shows a mass loss around 18% over the 30 days, while the H1 and H2, present a mass loss of around 35% and 44%, respectively. Additionally, the in vitro cellular assessments using chondrocyte cells (ATDC5) in encapsulated state revealed, for all hydrogel formulations, a non-cytotoxic behavior. Furthermore, Live/Dead assay and Phalloidin/DAPI staining, to assess the cytoskeletal organization, proved that the hydrogels can provide a suitable microenvironment for cell adhesion, viability, and proliferation, after being encapsulated. Overall, the results show that all marine collagen (jellyfish/shark)-chitosan-fucoidan hydrogel formulations provide a good structural architecture and microenvironment, highlighting the H3 biomaterial due to containing more polymers in their composition, making it suitable for biomedical articular cartilage therapies.

Abstract
The study investigated the effect of polyphenols present in Cassia auriculata (CA) leaves in enhancing the stability of the collagen protein and the wound healing potential of collagen films. The crude ethanol extract of CA was analyzed for the presence of phytochemicals and purified by column chromatography using solvents with increasing polarity. The ethanol eluted active fractions (EEAF) that precipitated gelatin was characterized using HP-TLC, FTIR spectroscopy, ESI-FT-MS/MS, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The active compound was identified to be procyanidin B belonging to the proanthocyanidins group. The wound healing property of EEAF and collagen type I extracted from Clarias batrachus fish skin and the bovine tendon was assessed by in vitro scratch assay on L929 mice fibroblast cell lines. The EEAF-treated collagen coating enhanced in vitro wound closure in comparison with the uncoated dish. It was observed that EEAF treatment improved the physical strength of collagen films. The in vivo wound healing of the EEAF-treated collagen film was examined in male Wister rats and the wound site tissues were assessed. In vivo wound examination showed enhanced healing with EEAF incorporated collagen films. Comparatively, the EEAF-treated bovine tendon collagen films showed improved physical properties and better wound healing property than fish collagen films.

Abstract
The objective of the present work was to evaluate novel active films made with biopolymeric matrices as carriers of a living Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus HD100 strain, a predatory bacterium with antimicrobial potentials against pathogens. Biopolymer films were prepared by a casting method using the following mixtures: collagen/sodium alginate/sorbitol (CA-S), collagen/sodium alginate/glycerol (CA-G), and tapioca starch/sodium alginate/glycerol (StA-G). The effects of the film formulations on the viability of the B. bacteriovorus was investigated by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). SEM showed that Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus morphology was not altered in the polymeric films. FTIR spectroscopy provided information about the structural composition of the films. CA-S showed less reduction in the viability of B. bacteriovorus after its entrapment; thus, CA-S proved to be a better agent for the immobilization and preservation of B. bacteriovorus to enhance its predatory activities during application against Escherichia coli.

Abstract
Chinese Traditional Medicines (CTMs) are very popular for therapeutic applications to cure several chronic diseases. Many researchers are trying to discover the potential application and actual mechanism of CTMs in order to scientifically prove their effects for commercial use. One of the main functions of CTMs is to aid stem cell regeneration. Since, this study was focused to fabricate CTMs incorporated fish collagen film, which has good biocompatibility in mammalian cell growth and thus investigated the effect on human Mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) proliferation and differentiation. In this study, three types of CTMs such as Genistein, Icariin, and Naringin were used for film fabrication. Mechanical properties of collagen films were improved by the addition of CTMs, especially in Collagen-Naringin films. Solubility and In-vitro biodegradation of collagen films were enhanced by the hydrophobicity and chemical interaction of CTMs with collagen. The proliferation rate was accelerated in hMSCs cultured on CTMs incorporated collagen films in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Proliferation biomarkers such as Ki-67 and BrdU levels were higher in hMSCs cultured on CTMs incorporated collagen films. The proliferative and differentiation effect of CTMs was further confirmed by higher gene expression of Collagen I, Runx2, c-Fos, SMAD3 and TGF-β1 in hMSCs. Overall, this study provides a new insight on novel biomaterial fabrication using CTMs and fish collagen for making a compatible platform for in-vitro stem cell culture.

Abstract
This article compares the properties of bacterial cellulose/fish collagen composites (BC/Col) after enzymatic and chemical cross-linking. In our methodology, two transglutaminases are used for enzymatic cross-linking—one recommended for the meat and the other proposed for the fish industry—and pre-oxidated BC (oxBC) is used for chemical cross-linking. The structure of the obtained composites is characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and their functional properties by mechanical and water barrier tests. While polymer chains in uncross-linked BC/Col are intertwined by H-bonds, new covalent bonds in enzymatically cross-linked ones are formed—resulting in increased thermal stability and crystallinity of the material. The C2–C3 bonds cleavage in D-glucose units, due to BC oxidation, cause secondary alcohol groups to vanish in favor of the carbonyl groups’ formation, thus reducing the number of H-bonded OHs. Thermal stability and crystallinity of oxBC/Col remain lower than those of BC/Col. The BC/Col formation did not affect tensile strength and water vapor permeability of BC, but enzymatic cross-linking with TGGS improved them significantly.

Abstract
Collagen is widely used for dental therapy in several ways such as films, 3D matrix, and composites, besides traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used in tissue regeneration and wound healing application for centuries. Hence, the present study was targeted for the first time to fabricate collagen film with TCM such as resveratrol and celastrol in order to investigate the human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLF) growth and bone marrow macrophages (BMM) derived osteoclastogenesis. Further, the physicochemical, mechanical and biological activities of collagen-TCM films crosslinked by glycerol and EDC-NHS (1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide-N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide) were investigated. Collagen film characterization was significantly regulated by the nature of plasticizers like hydrophobic and degree of polarity. Interestingly, the collagen film's denaturation temperature was increased by EDC-NHS than glycerol. FT-IR data confirmed the functional group changes due to chemical interaction of collagen with TCM. Morphological changes of HPLF cells cultured in control and collagen films were observed by SEM. Importantly, the addition of resveratrol upregulated the proliferation of HPLF cells, while osteoclastogenesis of BMM cells treated with mCSF-RANKL was significantly downregulated by celastrol. Accordingly, the collagen-TCM film could be an interesting material for dental regeneration, and especially it is a therapeutic target to restrain the elevated bone resorption during osteoporosis.

Abstract
Based on the excellent biocompatibility of collagen, collagen was extracted from pig skin by acid-enzymatic method. The films were prepared by the self-aggregation behavior of collagen, and the catalase was immobilized by adsorption, cross-linking and embedding. The experiment investigated the effects of glutaraldehyde on the mechanical properties, external sensory properties, and denaturation temperature of the films. The results showed that self-aggregating material could maintain the triple helix structure of pig skin collagen. The self-aggregation treatment and cross-linking treatment can improve the mechanical properties to 53 MPa, while the glutaraldehyde cross-linking agent can increase the denaturation temperature of the pig skin collagen self-aggregating membrane by 20.35% to 84.48 °C. This means that its application to immobilized catalase has better stability. The comparison shows that the catalase immobilized by the adsorption method has strong activity and high operational stability, and the cross-linking agent glutaraldehyde and the initial enzyme concentration have a significant effect on the immobilization, and the activity can reach 175 U g−1. After 16 uses of the film, the catalase was completely inactivated. This study provides a reference for the preparation of a catalase sensor that can be used to detect hydrogen peroxide in food by a catalase sensor. Based on the excellent biocompatibility of collagen, collagen was extracted from pig skin by acid-enzymatic method.![]()

Abstract
Different composite films composed of tilapia skin collagen (TSC) with Pachyrhizus starch (PS) or rambutan peel phenolics (RPP) were prepared, and the physical properties of these films were determined. The effects of PS and RPP on TSC films were investigated, and our results indicated that PS and RPP could improve the physical properties of TSC films. Opacity and film thickness showed an enhanced trend with increasing PS and RPP contents in TSC films, whereas solubility in water, elongation-at-break (EAB), and water vapor permeability (WVP) showed declining trends. TSC film with 10% PS and 0.5% RPP had the highest tensile strength, and the tensile strength dropped drastically when the content of PS and RPP increased. The light transmittances of the films could decrease with the incorporation of PS and RPP. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that the addition of PS and RPP improved the thermal stability of TSC films. In addition, X-ray diffraction indicated that the crystallinity of the films decreased and the amorphous structure of the films tended to become more complex with the addition of PS and RPP. As shown by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, PS and RPP can strongly interact with TSC, resulting in a modification of its structure. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that there was a good compatibility between TSC, PS, and RPP. The results indicated that TSC film incorporated with 10% PS and 0.5% RPP was an effective method for improve the physical properties of the film. TSC–PS–RPP composite films can be used not only in biomedical applications, but also as active food packaging materials.

Abstract
The structure and properties of natural sheep casing and collagen films with various crosslinking treatments have been investigated in detail to develop satisfied artificial casings prepared from collagen. The sheep casing consists of large number of thick collagen fibers oriented at ±45° from longitudinal direction with high-density interwoven network structure. The structural feature of sheep casing gave the special mouthfeel of 'cracking bite' of sausages. Whereas, layered structure filled with fine collagen fibrils and large gaps in collagen film results in poor mechanical properties and higher swelling ratio in water. Furthermore, a degree of denaturation of collagen during extraction process also lead to poor mechanical properties. After glutaraldehyde (GTA) and dehydrothermal (DHT) treatments, the formation of crosslinking improved mechanical properties of collagen films significantly and the tensile strength and tensile modulus increased more than three times compared with those of untreated collagen film in wet before and after boiling. The swelling ratio of treated collagen films also decreased dramatically. No obvious effects on denaturation of collagen film after GTA treatment, but the degree of denaturation of DHT treated collagen film increased slightly.

Abstract
Collagen, a sustainable and biodegradable biomass material, has many applications in different scope including application in food packaging. However, owing to its poor mechanical properties, this kind of application is limited. In this work, collagen was cross-linked with catechin under the incubation of laccase to improve the mechanical properties of collagen, and the cross-linked collagen exhibited properties of excellent antioxidant capacity and lower swelling ratio. Meanwhile, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results provide evidence for changes in the structure of collagen after being cross-linked with the catechin. From the aspects of the thermal stability, tensile strength, elongation, antioxidant capacity, swelling, solubility, and morphological analysis, the cross-linked collagen has better physical properties in comparison with natural collagen. This indicates that the physical properties and antioxidant capacity of collagen after being cross-linked with catechins were improved significantly. Therefore, the cross-linked collagen can be used as green food-packaging materials.

Abstract
The acid solubilised collagen (ASC) and pepsin solubilised collagen (PSC) were extracted from the by-products (skin) of a cartilaginous fish (Mustelus mustelus). The ASC and PSC yields were 23.07% and 35.27% dry weight, respectively and were identified as collagen Type I with the presence of α, β and γ chains. As revealed by the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis, pepsin did not alter the PSC triple helix structure. Based on the various type of collagen yield, only PSC was used in combination with chitosan to produce a composite film. Such film had lower tensile strength but higher elongation at break when compared to chitosan film; and lower water solubility and lightness when compared to collagen film. Equally, FTIR spectra analysis of film composite showed the occurrence of collagen-chitosan interaction resulting in a modification of the secondary structure of collagen. Collagen-chitosan-based biofilm showed a potential UV barrier properties and antioxidant activity, which might be used as green bioactive films to preserve nutraceutical products.

Abstract
Collagen-chitosan composite film modified with grapheme oxide (GO) and 1-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC), termed CC-G-E film, was loaded with basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) as the development of an efficacious wound healing device. In this study we report a novel drug delivery system that prevents the initial burst release and loss of bioactivity of drugs in vitro and in vivo applications. The results showed that CC-G-E film possessed improved thermal stability and a higher rate of crosslinking with increased mechanical properties when the dosage of GO was between 0.03% and 0.07%. It was shown that the in vitro release of bFGF from CC-G-E film continued for more than 28d. Furthermore, the CC-G-E films demonstrated excellent in vitro biocompatibility following culture with L929 fibroblasts in terms of cell adhesion and proliferation. CC-G-E films were implanted into Sprague-Dawley rats to characterize their ability to repair full-thickness skin wounds. Results showed that the CC-G-E film accelerated the wound healing process compared with the blank control. Based on all the results, it was concluded that CC-G-E film operates as a novel drug delivery system and due to its performance in wound remodeling, has potential to be developed as a wound dressing material.
