Abstract
The regeneration of wastewater has been recognized as an effective strategy to counter water scarcity. Nonetheless, Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluents still contain a wide range of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) even after water depuration. Filtration through Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) systems has proven efficient for CECs removal although the attenuation of their associated biological effects still remains poorly understood. To evaluate this, three pilot SAT systems were monitored, two of them enhanced with different reactive barriers. SATs were fed with secondary effluents during two consecutive campaigns. Fifteen water samples were collected from the WWTP effluent, below the barriers and 15 m into the aquifer. The potential attenuation of effluent-associated biological effects by SATs was evaluated through toxicogenomic bioassays using zebrafish eleutheroembryos and human hepatic cells. Transcriptomic analyses revealed a wide range of toxic activities exerted by the WWTP effluents that were reduced by more than 70% by SAT. Similar results were observed when HepG2 hepatic cells were tested for cytotoxic and dioxin-like responses. Toxicity reduction appeared partially determined by the barrier composition and/or SAT managing and correlated with CECs removal. SAT appears as a promising approach to efficiently reduce effluent-associated toxicity contributing to environmental and human health preservation.

Abstract
As a common raw material of industrial products, bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used in the production of food contact materials, and there is a high risk of exposure in food. However, BPA is a well-known endocrine disruptor and poses a serious threat to human health. Herein, a fluorescent sensing platform of BPA based on enzymatic oxidation-mediated fluorescence quenching of silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) is established and used to the detection of BPA in food species. The SiNPs are prepared with a facile one-step synthesis and emit bright green fluorescence. BPA can be oxidized by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to form a product which can quench the fluorescence of SiNPs through electron transfer. There is a good linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity and BPA concentration in the range of 1-100 μM. Therefore, a fluorometry of BPA is established with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.69 μM. This method has been applied to the determination of BPA in mineral drinking water, orange juice, and milk with satisfactory results. The fluorescent sensor of BPA based on SiNPs has favorable application foreground in the field of food safety analysis.

Abstract
In the present study, the bidirectional interactions of Artemia franciscana with BPA, administered either alone or following treatment with the probiotics Bacillus subtilis, Lactococcus lactis or Lactobacillus plantarum, were evaluated. A 24 h exposure to BPA below LC50 induced oxidative stress to Artemia, indicated by diminished activity of superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, glutathione transferase and phenoloxidase, increased lipid peroxidation and decreased survival. Probiotic treatment prior to BPA exposure, led to increased survival, reduced lipid peroxidation and increased enzyme activities. BPA quantification in Artemia and its culture medium, showed a time dependent reduction in its levels, more evident in probiotic series, indicating its biotransformation. ESI-MS analysis confirmed the presence of the tentative BPA metabolites hydroquinone and BPA-sulfate, while BPA-disulfate formation was confirmed in only in the probiotic series. Our results provide evidence that probiotics alleviate the oxidative stress response induced by BPA, by enhancing the BPA biotransformation ability of Artemia.
