First identification of natural products from the African medicinal plant Zamioculcas zamiifolia - A drought resistant survivor through millions of years

Recent Advances on Natural Aryl-C-glycoside Scaffolds: Structure, Bioactivities, and Synthesis-A Comprehensive Review

Aryl-C-glycosides, of both synthetic and natural origin, are of great significance in medicinal chemistry owing to their unique structures and stability towards enzymatic and chemical hydrolysis as compared to O-glycosides. They are well-known antibiotics and potent enzyme inhibitors and possess a wide range of biological activities such as anticancer, antioxidant, antiviral, hypoglycemic effects, and so on. Currently, a number of aryl-C-glycoside drugs are on sale for the treatment of diabetes and related complications. This review summarizes the findings on aryl-C-glycoside scaffolds over the past 20 years, concerning new structures (over 200 molecules), their bioactivities-including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antivirus, glycation inhibitory activities and other pharmacological effects-as well as their synthesis.

Identification of C-glycosyl flavones and quality assessment in Dendrobium nobile

RATIONALE

Flavones are significant indicators of quality in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) and thus play a significant role in the quality control of TCMs in the pharmaceutical industry. Most flavones in Dendrobium nobile Lindl, a TCM with a long cultivation history and rich sources, have not been identified. This study was aimed at identifying the flavones in D. nobile from various habitats.

METHODS

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with diode-array detection and HPLC multiple-stage tandem mass spectrometry was used to identify the chemical constituents of D. nobile from various habitats, and a method was established to determine the content of vicenin II, violanthin and isoviolanthin. Hierarchical cluster analysis, principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis were used to analyze the variations among 26 batches from different habitats.

RESULTS

A total of 33 flavones were tentatively identified. Twenty-five flavones, previously undescribed in D. nobile, were acylated by p-coumaroyl, feruloyl, sinapoyl or 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl. The D. nobile habitats were distinguished by significant differences in their flavone content. The C-glycosyl flavones were demonstrated to be characteristic compounds for evaluating D. nobile from various habitats. In particular, flavones acylated with 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl were specific compounds that were only detected in samples from Yunnan.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study could be used to improve the quality control of D. nobile and could provide references for the identification of acylated C-glycosyl flavones in other natural products.

A New Potential Source of Anti-pathogenic Bacterial Substances from Zamioculcas zamiifolia (Lodd.) Engl. Extracts

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

The increase of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a problem for global health that needs to find new antibiotic drugs. The plant is the potential source of antibiotic substances that important to solve the antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study was aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Zamioculcas zamiifolia stem extracts against nine human pathogenic bacteria.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Z. zamiifolia stems were extracted with five extraction solvents. The screening of antibacterial activity of stem extract was measured using agar disc diffusion assay. The Minimal Inhibition Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) values of extracts were determined using the broth microdilution assay and colorimetric assay.

RESULTS

The results indicated that the lowest MIC value of 0.09 mg mL-1 against Staphylococcus aureus TISTR 1466 was obtained from hexane extraction. The lowest MBCs value of 1.56 mg mL-1 against Bacillus cereus TISTR 2373, Listeria spp. and Escherichia coli TISTR 527 were obtained from ethanol and methanol extractions.

CONCLUSION

The ethanolic and methanolic stem extracts of Z. zamiifolia demonstrated the highest anti-human pathogenic bacterial activity. This is the first report to demonstrate the high potential of antibacterial substance from Z. zamiifolia stem extracts, which can be developed further as a natural drug for treating bacterial infectious diseases.
