Mushroom oils: A review of their production, composition, and potential applications

This review delves into the world of mushroom oils, highlighting their production, composition, and versatile applications. Despite mushrooms' overall low lipid content, their fatty acid composition, rich in essential fatty acids like linoleic acid and oleic acid, proves nutritionally significant. Variations in fatty acid profiles across mushroom species and the prevalence of unsaturated fats contribute to their cardiovascular health benefits. The exploration extends to mushroom essential oils, revealing diverse volatile compounds through extraction methods like hydrodistillation and solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE). The identification of 1-octen-3-ol as a key contributor to the distinct "mushroom flavor" adds a nuanced perspective. The focus broadens to applications, encompassing culinary and industrial uses with techniques like cold pressing and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). Mushroom oils, with their unique nutritional and flavor profiles, enhance gastronomic experiences. Non-food applications in cosmetics and biofuels underscore the oils' versatility. The nutritional composition, enriched with essential fatty acids, bioactive compositions, and trace elements, is explored for potential health benefits. Bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds and terpenes contribute to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, positioning mushroom oils as nutritional powerhouses. In short, this concise review synthesizes the intricate world of mushroom oils, emphasizing their nutritional significance, extraction methodologies, and potential health benefits. The comprehensive overview underscores mushroom oils as a promising area for further exploration and utilization. The characteristics of mushroom biomass oil for the use in various industries are influenced by the mushroom species, chemical composition, biochemical synthesis of mushroom, and downstream processes including extraction, purification and characterization. Therefore, further research and exploration need to be done to achieve a circular bioeconomy with the integration of SDGs, waste reduction, and economic stimulation, to fully utilize the benefits of mushroom, a valuable gift of nature.

Cadinane sesquiterpenes from the stems and branches of Illicium ternstroemioides

Three new cadinane sesquiterpenes (1-3) and three known sesquiterpenes were isolated from the stems and branches of Illicium ternstroemioides A. C. Smith. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectroscopic and HRESIMS data. The structures of illiternins A-C (1-3) were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, allowing for the determination of their absolute configurations. Compounds 3 and 6 exhibited antiviral activity against Coxsackievirus B3 with IC50 values of 33.3 and 57.7 μM, respectively.

Identification a novel Ganoderma FIP gene from Ganoderma capense and its functional expression in Pichia pastoris

Ganoderma capense is a precious medicinal fungus in China. In this study, a novel fungal immunomodulatory protein gene, named as FIP-gca, was cloned from G. capense by homologous cloning. Sequencing analysis indicated that FIP-gca was composed of 336 bp, which encoded a polypeptide of 110 amino acids. Protein sequence blasting and phylogenetic analysis showed that FIP-gca shared homology with other Ganoderma FIPs. FIP-gca was effectively expressed in Pichia pastoris GS115 at an expression level of 166.8 mg/L and purified using HisTrap™ fast-flow prepack columns. The immunomodulation capacity of rFIP-gca was demonstrated by that rFIP-gca could obviously stimulate cell proliferation and increase IL-2 secretion of murine spleen lymphocytes. Besides, antitumor activity of rFIP-gca towards human stomach cancer AGS cell line was evaluated in vitro. Cell wound scratch assay proved that rFIP-gca could inhibit migration of AGS cells. And flow cytometry assay revealed that rFIP-gca could significantly induce apoptosis of AGS cells. rFIP-gca was able to induce 18.12% and 22.29% cell apoptosis at 0.3 μM and 0.6 μM, respectively. Conclusively, the novel FIP-gca gene from G. capense has been functionally expressed in Pichia and rFIP-gca exhibited ideal immunomodulation and anti-tumour activities, which implies its potential application and study in future.

Two New Phenylhydrazone Derivatives from the Pearl River Estuary Sediment-Derived Streptomyces sp. SCSIO 40020

Two new phenylhydrazone derivatives and one new alkaloid, penzonemycins A–B (1–2) and demethylmycemycin A (3), together with three known compounds including an alkaloid (4) and two sesquiterpenoids (5–6), were isolated from the Streptomyces sp. SCSIO 40020 obtained from the Pearl River Estuary sediment. Their structures and absolute configurations were assigned by 1D/2D NMR, mass spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Compound 1 was evaluated in four human cancer cell lines by the SRB method and displayed weak cytotoxicity in three cancer cell lines, with IC₅₀ values that ranged from 30.44 to 61.92 µM, which were comparable to those of the positive control cisplatin. Bioinformatic analysis of the putative biosynthetic gene cluster indicated a Japp–Klingemann coupling reaction involved in the hydrazone formation of 1 and 2.

Sesquiterpenoids isolated from feces-residing Streptomyces sp. inhibit the cellular entry of influenza a viruses

Five metabolites (1-5), including two new sesquiterpenoids, designated ganodermanol L (1) and 4α,15-epoxyeudesmane-1β,6α,11-triol (2), together with three known structurally related compounds (3-5), have been isolated from the cultures of Streptomyces sp. XM17, a bacteria residing in the fresh feces of the giant panda Ailuropoda melanoleuca. The structures of 1-2 were established on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses, including 1D- and 2D-NMR (¹H-¹H COSY, HMQC, HMBC and NOESY) experiments. Furthermore, the absolute configuration of 1 was established by single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analyses. Of noted, these compounds were found to possessed antiviral activities using the 'pretreatment of virus' approach with IC₅₀ values ranging from 4 to 30 nM, indicating that these sesquiterpenoids were potent in inhibiting the entry of influenza A virus.

Traditional uses, chemical components and pharmacological activities of the genus Ganoderma P. Karst.: a review

In recent years, some natural products isolated from the fungi of the genus Ganoderma have been found to have anti-tumor, liver protection, anti-inflammatory, immune regulation, anti-oxidation, anti-viral, anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic effects. This review summarizes the research progress of some promising natural products and their pharmacological activities. The triterpenoids, meroterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, steroids, alkaloids and polysaccharides isolated from Ganoderma lucidum and other species of Ganoderma were reviewed, including their corresponding chemical structures and biological activities. In particular, the triterpenes, polysaccharides and meroterpenoids of Ganoderma show a wide range of biological activities. Among them, the hydroxyl groups on the C-3, C-24 and C-25 positions of the lanostane triterpenes compound were the necessary active groups for the anti-HIV-1 virus. Previous study showed that lanostane triterpenes can inhibit human immunodeficiency virus-1 protease with an IC₅₀ value of 20–40 μM, which has potential anti-HIV-1 activity. Polysaccharides can promote the production of TNF α and IFN-γ by macrophages and spleen cells in mice, and further inhibit or kill tumor cells. Some meroterpenoids contain oxygen-containing heterocycles, and they have significant antioxidant activity. In addition, Ganoderma has been used as a medicine to treat diseases for more than 2000 years, and we also reviewed its traditional uses.

Lanostane triterpenoids and ergostane-type steroids from the cultured mycelia of Ganoderma capense

Two new lanostane triterpenoids (1 and 2), two new ergostane-type steroids (3 and 4) together with two known lanostane triterpenoids (5 and 6) and one known steroid (7) were isolated from the cultured mycelia of Ganoderma capense (CGMCC 5.71). Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic (HRESIMS, 1D NMR, 2D NMR) data analyses. Compound 1 exhibited moderate cytotoxic activity against the human cancer cell line NCI-H1650 with an IC₅₀ value of 22.3 μM, and 7 displayed cytotoxic activity against the human cancer cell line HCT116 with an IC₅₀ value of 17.4 μM. In addition, compounds 2, 3, 5, and 6 displayed weak anti-HIV activity with IC₅₀ values of 23.5, 46.7, 21.6, and 30.1 μM, respectively.

Eudesmane-Type Sesquiterpene Glycosides from Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz

Eudesmane-type sesquiterpenes have been reported to exhibit varieties of biological activities. During the process of investigating this kind of natural product from the root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz., 13 eudesmane-type sesquiterpene glycosides including six new isolates, named as dictameudesmnosides A₁ (1), A₂ (2), B (3), C (4), D (5), and E (6), together with seven known ones (7-13), were obtained. Herein, their structures were determined by the analysis of physical data, spectroscopic analysis, and chemical methods. The existence of α-configuration glucose units in their structures (1-5, 8) is not very common in natural glycosidic components. Meanwhile, compounds 3-5, 7, and 9-13 displayed TG accumulation inhibitory effects on HepG2 cells.
