Abstract
Microbial composition plays an important role in the quality and flavor of bacon. The aims of this study were to detect bacterial community succession using high-throughput sequencing (HTS) and volatile flavor compound changes using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) during the production of Zhenba bacon. The results showed that a total of 70 volatile compounds were detected. Among them, ketones, hydrocarbons, aldehydes, esters and alcohols were the main substances in the curing and smoking stages. In addition, the fungal abundance was greater than the bacterial abundance, and there was obvious succession of the microbial community with changes in fermentation time and processing technology. The main functional bacterial genera in the curing and smoking stages were Staphylococcus, Psychrobacter and Latilactobacillus, and the main fungal genera were Fusarium and Debaryomyces. Through correlation analysis, we found that pyrrole, 2-pentanol, methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and ethyl acetate (EA) were significantly correlated with Staphylococcus, Psychrobacter, Pseudomonas and Myroides (p < 0.01), and it is speculated that they contribute significantly to flavor formation. The results of this study are helpful for understanding the microbial dynamics and characteristic volatile flavor compounds in Zhenba bacon, and provide new insights into the relationship between microorganisms and flavor through potential correlations.

Abstract
Vibrio mimicus is a pathogenic bacterium that cause red body disease in Macrobrachium nipponense, leading to high mortality and financial loss. Based on previous studies, rpoS gene contribute to bacterial pathogenicity during infection, but the role of RpoS involved in the immune response of M. nipponense under V. mimicus infection remains unclear. In this study, the pathogen load and the RNA-seq of M. nipponense under wild-type and ΔrpoS strain V. mimicus infection were investigated. Over the entire infection period, the ΔrpoS strain pathogen load was always lower than that of the wild-type strain in the M. nipponense hemolymph, hepatopancreas, gill and muscle. Furthermore, the expression level of rpoS gene in the hepatopancreas was the highest at 24 hours post infection (hpi), then the samples of hepatopancreas tissue infected with the wild type and ΔrpoS strain at 24 hpi were selected for RNA-seq sequencing. The results revealed a significant change in the transcriptomes of the hepatopancreases infected with ΔrpoS strain. In contrast to the wild-type infected group, the ΔrpoS strain infected group exhibited differentially expressed genes (DEGs) enriched in 181 KEGG pathways at 24 hpi. Among these pathways, 8 immune system-related pathways were enriched, including ECM-receptor interaction, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, Rap1 signaling pathway, Gap junction, and Focal adhesion, etc. Among these pathways, up-regulated genes related to Kazal-type serine protease inhibitors, S-antigen protein, copper zinc superoxide dismutase, tight junction protein, etc. were enriched. This study elucidates that rpoS can affect tissue bacterial load and immune-related pathways, thereby impacting the survival rate of M. nipponense under V. mimicus infection. These findings validate the potential of rpoS as a promising target for the development of a live attenuated vaccine against V. mimicus.

Abstract
The excessive consumption of fossil fuels causes massive emission of CO2, leading to climate deterioration and environmental pollution. The development of substitutes and sustainable energy sources to replace fossil fuels has become a worldwide priority. Bio-electrochemical systems (BESs), employing redox reactions of electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) on electrodes to achieve a meritorious combination of biocatalysis and electrocatalysis, provide a green and sustainable alternative approach for bioremediation, CO2 fixation, and energy and chemicals production. EAMs, including exoelectrogens and electrotrophs, perform extracellular electron transfer (EET) (i.e., outward and inward EET), respectively, to exchange energy with the environment, whose rate determines the efficiency and performance of BESs. Therefore, we review the synthetic biology strategies developed in the last decade for engineering EAMs to enhance the EET rate in cell-electrode interfaces for facilitating the production of electricity energy and value-added chemicals, which include (1) progress in genetic manipulation and editing tools to achieve the efficient regulation of gene expression, knockout, and knockdown of EAMs; (2) synthetic biological engineering strategies to enhance the outward EET of exoelectrogens to anodes for electricity power production and anodic electro-fermentation (AEF) for chemicals production, including (i) broadening and strengthening substrate utilization, (ii) increasing the intracellular releasable reducing equivalents, (iii) optimizing c-type cytochrome (c-Cyts) expression and maturation, (iv) enhancing conductive nanowire biosynthesis and modification, (v) promoting electron shuttle biosynthesis, secretion, and immobilization, (vi) engineering global regulators to promote EET rate, (vii) facilitating biofilm formation, and (viii) constructing cell-material hybrids; (3) the mechanisms of inward EET, CO2 fixation pathway, and engineering strategies for improving the inward EET of electrotrophic cells for CO2 reduction and chemical production, including (i) programming metabolic pathways of electrotrophs, (ii) rewiring bioelectrical circuits for enhancing inward EET, and (iii) constructing microbial (photo)electrosynthesis by cell-material hybridization; (4) perspectives on future challenges and opportunities for engineering EET to develop highly efficient BESs for sustainable energy and chemical production. We expect that this review will provide a theoretical basis for the future development of BESs in energy harvesting, CO2 fixation, and chemical synthesis.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE As the most important non-magnetotactic magnetosome-producing bacteria, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans only requires very mild conditions to produce Fe3O4 nanoparticles, thus conferring greater flexibility and potential application in biomagnetic nanoparticle production. However, the available information cannot explain the mechanism of Fe3O4 nanoparticle formation in A. ferrooxidans. In this study, we applied phenomic and transcriptomic analyses to reveal this mechanism. We found that different treatment condition factors notably affect the phenomic data of Fe3O4 nanoparticle in A. ferrooxidans. Using transcriptomic analyses, the gene network controlling/regulating Fe3O4 nanoparticle biogenesis in A. ferrooxidans was proposed, excavating the candidate hub genes for Fe3O4 nanoparticle formation in A. ferrooxidans. Based on this information, a sequential model for Fe3O4 nanoparticle synthesis in A. ferrooxidans was hypothesized. It lays the groundwork for further clarifying the feature of Fe3O4 nanoparticle synthesis.

Abstract
The type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a large secretory device, widely found in Gram-negative bacteria, which plays important roles in virulence, bacterial competition, and environmental adaptation. Vibrio alginolyticus (V. alginolyticus) is an opportunistic pathogen that causes vibriosis in aquaculture animals. V. alginolyticus possesses two type VI secretion systems (named the T6SS1 and T6SS2), but their functions remain largely unclear. In this paper, the roles of the core component of the T6SS2 cluster of V. alginolyticus HY9901, hemolysin-coregulated protein2 coding gene hcp2, are reported. Deletion of hcp2 clearly impaired the swarming motility, adhesive capacity, and pathogenicity of V. alginolyticus against zebrafish. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) found that the abnormal morphology of flagellum filament in the hcp2 mutant strain could be partially restored by hcp2 complementarity. By proteomic and RT-qPCR analysis, we confirmed that the expression levels of flagellar flagellin and assembly-associated proteins were remarkably decreased in an hcp2 mutant strain, compared with the wild-type strain, and could be partially restored with a supply of hcp2. Accordingly, hcp2 had a positive influence on the transcription of flagellar regulons rpoN, rpoS, and fliA; this was verified by RT-qPCR. Taken together, these results suggested that hcp2 was involved in mediating the motility, adhesion, and pathogenicity of Vibrio alginolyticus through positively impacting its flagellar system.

Abstract
Myofibril proteins degradation constitutes an important factor in quality deterioration, procedural activation or inhibition of endogenous protease potential regulates autolytic proteolysis-induced softening of post mortem fish muscle. Based on the brief introduction of myofibril proteins degradation in fish skeletal muscle, a detailed description of the main myofibril degradation properties and the distinct role played by endogenous proteases were proposed, which reflects the limitations and challenges of the current research on myofibril hydrolysis mechanisms based on the varied surrounding conditions. In addition, the latest researches on the evaluation method of myofibril proteins degradation were comprehensively reviewed. The potential use of label-free proteomics combined with bioinformatics was also emphasized and has become an important means to in-depth understand protein degradation mechanism.

Abstract
Hydrogels have become promising materials for food packaging due to their unique microstructure. However, hydrogel materials suitable for seafood preservation have rarely been reported. In this study, a tamarind polysaccharide-polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel with the ability to maintain seafood freshness was prepared and characterized. The hydrogel possesses quick self-healing, good tissue fitting, and freezing tolerance capability. Moreover, a peeling force of only 0.1 N between the hydrogel and the fillet tissue confirmed the non-stick properties. The FTIR characteristic peak at 1600 cm-1 and 1450 cm-1 proved the ester bond-based chemical cross-linking of the hydrogel. Release profiles at pH 6.0 to 8.0 verified the pH-responsive release of quorum-quenching (QQ) enzymes over 120 h, which enabled the hydrogel to achieve biofilm and protease inhibitory activities. In vivo spoilage tests showed that the shelf life of hydrogel-coated red snapper fillets was extended by >3 days. These results illustrate the potential of the prepared hydrogel as functional packaging for seafood preservation.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is a phenomenon caused by an imbalance between the production and accumulation of reactive oxygen species in cells and tissues that eventually leads to the production of various diseases. Here, we investigated the antioxidant effects of the extract from Sonchus brachyotus DC. (SBE) based on the 0.2% oxazolone-induced intestinal oxidative stress model of zebrafish. Compared to the model group, the treatment group alleviated oxazolone-induced intestinal tissue damage and reduced the contents of malondialdehyde, reactive oxygen species, IL-1β, and TNF-α and then increased the contents of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and IL-10. The 16s rDNA gene sequencing findings demonstrated that SBE could increase the relative abundance of Fusobacteriota, Actinobacteriota, and Firmicutes and decrease the relative abundance of Proteobacteria. Based on the correlation analysis between the oxidative stress biomarkers and intestinal flora, we found that the trends of oxidative stress biomarkers were significantly correlated with intestinal microorganisms, especially at the genus level. The correlations of MDA, IL-1β, and TNF-α were significantly negative with Shewanella, while SOD, GSH-Px, and IL-10 were significantly positive with Cetobacterium, Gemmobacter, and Flavobacterium. Consequently, we concluded that the antioxidant effect of SBE was realized through the interaction between oxidative stress biomarkers and gut microbiota.

Abstract
Biofilm formation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus enhanced its tolerance to the environment, but caused many serious problems to food safety and human health. In this paper, the effects of copper and carbenicillin (CARB) stress on the formation of the biofilms of V. parahaemolyticus organisms were studied, and RNA sequencing technology was used to compare the differences in transcriptome profiles of the biofilm-related genes of V. parahaemolyticus organisms under different sub-inhibitory stresses. The results proved that V. parahaemolyticus had a large growth difference under the two stresses, copper and CARB at 1/2 minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), and it could form a stable biofilm under both stress conditions. The amount of biofilm formed under CARB stress was significantly higher than that of copper stress (p < 0.05). Based on the analysis of transcriptome sequencing results 323, 1,550, and 1,296 significantly differential expressed genes were identified in the three treatment groups namely 1/2 MIC CARB, Cu2+, and Cu2++CARB. Through COG annotation, KEGG metabolic pathway analysis and gene expression analysis related to biofilm formation, the functional pathways of transcriptome changes affecting V. parahaemolyticus were different in the three treatment groups, and the CARB treatment group was significantly different from the other two groups. These differences indicated that the ABC transport system, two-component system and quorum sensing were all involved in the biofilm formation of the V. parahaemolytic by regulating flagellar motility, extracellular polysaccharides and extracellular polymer synthesis. Exploring the effects of different stress conditions on the transcriptome of V. parahaemolyticus could provide a basis for future research on the complex network system that regulates the formation of bacterial biofilms.

Abstract
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a foodborne pathogen that can colonize the small intestine of the host and cause diarrhea. The alternative sigma factor RpoN plays a vital role in regulating motility, carbon utilization and affects host colonization in V. parahaemolyticus RIMD2210633. In this study, transcriptome and phenotypic analysis further expanded our understanding of the RpoN regulon in V. parahaemolyticus. A deletion mutant of rpoN (ΔrpoN) was subjected to RNA-seq for systemic identification of the RpoN-controlled genes. Compared with the wild-type (WT), 399 genes were differentially expressed in the ΔrpoN strain. Moreover, 264 genes were down-regulated in the ΔrpoN strain, including those associated with nitrogen utilization (VP0118), glutamine synthetase (VP0121), formate dehydrogenase (VP1511 and VP1513-VP1515), quorum sensing (opaR and luxZ), polar flagellar systems, and type VI secretion system 2 (T6SS2). Quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) further confirmed that RpoN could directly bind to the promoters of these genes associated with polar flagellar systems (flgB and fliE), lateral flagellar systems (flgB2 and lafA), T6SS2 (hcp2 and VPA1044) and glutamine synthetase (VP0121), and then positively regulate the expression of these systems. A RpoN-binding motif was identified in V. parahaemolyticus using the MEME suite and verified by the EMSA. Besides, the deletion of rpoN caused a significant decrease in hemolytic activity, adhesion, and cytotoxicity. Our results provide new cues to better understand the regulatory networks of RpoN protein to motility, T6SS2, and metabolism in V. parahaemolyticus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND RpoN, also known as σ54, first reported in Escherichia coli, is a subunit of RNA polymerase that strictly controls the expression of different genes by identifying specific promoter elements. RpoN has an important regulatory function in carbon and nitrogen metabolism and participates in the regulation of flagellar synthesis, bacterial motility and virulence. However, little is known about the effect of RpoN in Plesiomonas shigelloides. RESULTS To identify pathways controlled by RpoN, RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) of the WT and the rpoN deletion strain was carried out for comparison. The RNA-seq results showed that RpoN regulates ~ 13.2% of the P. shigelloides transcriptome, involves amino acid transport and metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, ribosome biosynthesis, flagellar assembly and bacterial secretion system. Furthermore, we verified the results of RNA-seq using quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR, which indicated that the absence of rpoN caused downregulation of more than half of the polar and lateral flagella genes in P. shigelloides, and the ΔrpoN mutant was also non-motile and lacked flagella. In the present study, the ability of the ΔrpoN mutant to kill E. coli MG1655 was reduced by 54.6% compared with that of the WT, which was consistent with results in RNA-seq, which showed that the type II secretion system (T2SS-2) genes and the type VI secretion system (T6SS) genes were repressed. By contrast, the expression of type III secretion system genes was largely unchanged in the ΔrpoN mutant transcriptome and the ability of the ΔrpoN mutant to infect Caco-2 cells was also not significantly different compared with the WT. CONCLUSIONS We showed that RpoN is required for the motility and contributes to the killing ability of P. shigelloides and positively regulates the T6SS and T2SS-2 genes.

Abstract
Enterobacter cloacae is widely distributed in the aquatic environment, and has been determined as a novel pathogen of various aquatic animals recently. Our previous studies have indicated E. cloacae caused repeated infections in Macrobrachium rosenbergii, suggesting a high survival ability of the bacteria, and rpoS gene has been known to regulate stress response and virulence of many bacteria. In this study, the E. cloacae-rpoS RNAi strain was constructed by RNAi technology, and the regulation role of rpoS in stress resistance and virulence of E. cloacae was explored by transcriptomic and phenotype analysis. The transcriptome analysis showed a total of 488 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between rpoS-RNAi and wild-type strains, including 30 up-regulated genes and 458 down-regulated genes, and these down-regulated DEGs were mainly related to environmental response, biofilm formation, bacterial type II secretory system, flagellin, fimbrillin, and chemotactic protein which associated with bacterial survival and virulence. The phenotype changes also showed the E. cloacae-rpoS RNAi strain exhibited significantly decreasing abilities of survival in environmental stresses (starvation, salinity, low pH, and oxidative stress), biofilm production, movement, adhesion to cells, pathogenicity, and colonization to M. rosenbergii. These results reveal that rpoS plays an important regulatory role in environmental stress adaptation and virulence of E. cloacae.

Abstract
Shewanella baltica is the dominant bacterium that causes spoilage of seafood. RpoS is an alternative sigma factor regulating stress adaptation in many bacteria. However, the detailed regulatory mechanism of RpoS in S. baltica remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the regulatory function of RpoS on spoilage activity and adhesion ability in S. baltica. Results revealed that RpoS had no effect on the growth of S. baltica, but positively regulated the spoilage potential of S. baltica accompanied by a slower decline of total volatile basic nitrogen, lightness, and the sensory score of fish fillets inoculated with rpoS mutant. RpoS negatively regulated the adhesion ability, which was manifested in that the bacterial number of rpoS mutant adhered to stainless steel coupon was higher than that of the S. baltica in the early stage, and the biofilm formed on glass slide by rpoS mutant was thicker and tighter compared with S. baltica. Transcriptomic analysis showed that a total of 397 differentially expressed genes were regulated by RpoS. These genes were mainly enrichment in flagellar assembly, fatty acid metabolism/degradation, and RNA degradation pathways, which were associated with motility, biofilm formation and cold adaptation. This study demonstrated that RpoS is a primary regulator involved in flagellar assembly mediated biofilm formation and cold adaptation-related spoilage activity of S. baltica. Our research will provide significant insights into the control of microbiological spoilage in seafood.

Abstract
Shewanella putrefaciens is a typical spoilage bacteria organism in seafood. The adhesion ability of three S. putrefaciens strains (HR-15, JR-18, HC-71) isolated from putrefied tilapia were evaluated by mucus adhesion in vitro and intestinal adhesion in vivo. The results of the spoilage of the inoculated fish fillets and spoilage of the refrigerated fish both showed that the adhesion ability of S. putrefaciens was positively correlated with the spoilage ability. High-throughput sequencing and GC-MS results showed that S. putrefaciens with high adhesion ability also significantly changed the intestinal flora of fish, causing an increase in the intestinal bacteria such as Plesionomas, Macellibacteroides, Acinetobacter, and Legionella, which then led to the increase in volatile substances such as low-grade aldehydes, alcohols, and ketones in the fish, serious fatty acid oxidation, and excitement of the fishy smell.

Abstract
This study illustrated the texture changes of Shewanella baltica-inoculated Litopenaeus vannamei during refrigerated storage with the exogenous addition of Lactobacillus plantarum SS-128. The group inoculated with SS-128 had an improved texture compared with that inoculated with the luxS-mutant group (ΔluxS). Proteomics were conducted to analyze the protein alterations in L. vannamei and supernatant, respectively. During storage, many texture-related proteins, including myosin heavy chain and beta-actin, were maintained due to luxS. Some endogenous enzymes related to the energy metabolism and hydrolysis of L. vannamei were downregulated. The luxS-induced interaction with S. baltica showed significant changes in the expression of some critical enzymes and pathways. The ATP-dependent zinc metalloprotease FtsH and protease subunit HslV were downregulated, and the oxidative phosphorylation and glycosaminoglycan degradation pathways in S. baltica were inhibited, resulting in the slow deterioration of L. vannamei. By exploring the mechanism underlying SS-128-led manipulation of the metabolism of spoilage bacteria, we clarified the texture maintenance mechanism of luxS in SS-128, providing theoretical evidence for SS-128 application in food preservation.

Abstract
Extracellular electron transfer (EET) of electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) is the dominating factor for versatile applications of bio-electrochemical systems. Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 is one of the model EAMs for the study of EET, which is associated with a variety of cellular activities. However, due to the lack of a transcriptional activation tool, regulation of multiple genes is labor-intensive and time-consuming, which hampers the advancement of improving the EET efficiency in S. oneidensis. In this study, we developed an easily operated and multifunctional regulatory tool, that is, a simultaneous clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-mediated transcriptional activation (CRISPRa) and interference (CRISPRi) system, for application in S. oneidensis. First, a large number of activators were screened, and RpoD (σ70) was determined as the optimal activator. Second, the effective activation range was identified to be 190-216 base upstream of the transcriptional start site. Third, up- and downregulation was achieved in concert by two orthogonal single guide RNAs targeting different positions. The activation of the cell division gene (minCDE) and repression of the cytotoxic gene (SO_3166) were concurrently implemented, increasing the power density by 2.5-fold and enhancing the degradation rate of azo dyes by 2.9-fold. The simultaneous CRISPRa and CRISPRi system enables simultaneous multiplex genetic regulation, offering the potential to further advance studies of the EET mechanism and application in S. oneidensis.

Abstract
Shewanella putrefaciens can cause the spoilage of seafood and shorten its shelf life. In this study, both strains of S. putrefaciens (YZ08 and YZ-J) isolated from spoiled bigeye tuna were subjected to in-depth phenotypic and genotypic characterization to better understand their roles in seafood spoilage. The complete genome sequences of strains YZ08 and YZ-J were reported. Unique genes of the two S. putrefaciens strains were identified by pan-genomic analysis. In vitro experiments revealed that YZ08 and YZ-J could adapt to various environmental stresses, including cold-shock temperature, pH, NaCl, and nutrient stresses. YZ08 was better at adapting to NaCl stress, and its genome possessed more NaCl stress-related genes compared with the YZ-J strain. YZ-J was a higher biofilm and exopolysaccharide producer than YZ08 at 4 and 30 °C, while YZ08 showed greater motility and enhanced capacity for biogenic amine metabolism, trimethylamine metabolism, and sulfur metabolism compared with YZ-J at both temperatures. That YZ08 produced low biofilm and exopolysaccharide contents and displayed high motility may be associated with the presence of more a greater number of genes encoding chemotaxis-related proteins (cheX) and low expression of the bpfA operon. This study provided novel molecular targets for the development of new antiseptic antisepsis strategies.

Abstract
We present here the results of the analysis of the complete genome sequence of a potentially temperate phage, vB_Sb_QDWS, which was isolated from wastewater samples collected in Qingdao, China. The genome of phage vB_Sb_QDWS is composed of a double-stranded DNA that is 47,902 bp in length with a G + C content of 63.16%. It is predicted to contain 69 putative protein-encoding genes. Microscopic and genomic analysis showed that vB_Sb_QDWS is a novel phage of the class Siphoviridae.

Abstract
Bacteria are the main cause of spoilage for fish and fishery products. Through the inactivation of the quorum sensing (QS) system, quorum quenching (QQ) enzymes can block the synthesis of bacterial virulence factors and effectively inhibit bacteria-induced food spoilage. This study analyzed the changes of microbiota in red sea bream filets during refrigerated storage. The results showed a decrease in microbial diversity with storage time, with Aeromonas veronii becoming the dominant bacteria on day 4. A novel N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHL) acylase PF2571, from the screened QQ bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens PF08, was identified and expressed in Escherichia coli to evaluate its QQ efficiency and effects on spoilage potential. Spoilage-related QS factors of A. veronii BY-8, including biofilm formation, motility, and protease, lipase, and alginate production, were inhibited by PF2571. Its inhibitory effect on red sea bream spoilage was demonstrated by the lower freshness indicators for PF2571 treated filets. Our study demonstrates the potential of the QQ enzyme for prolonging the shelf life of fish and fishery products.

Abstract
σ54 factor (RpoN), a type of transcriptional regulatory factor, is widely found in pathogenic bacteria. It binds to core RNA polymerase (RNAP) and regulates the transcription of many functional genes in an enhancer-binding protein (EBP)-dependent manner. σ54 has two conserved functional domains: the activator-interacting domain located at the N-terminal and the DNA-binding domain located at the C-terminal. RpoN directly binds to the highly conserved sequence, GGN10GC, at the −24/−12 position relative to the transcription start site of target genes. In general, bacteria contain one or two RpoNs but multiple EBPs. A single RpoN can bind to different EBPs in order to regulate various biological functions. Thus, the overlapping and unique regulatory pathways of two RpoNs and multiple EBP-dependent regulatory pathways form a complex regulatory network in bacteria. However, the regulatory role of RpoN and EBPs is still poorly understood in phytopathogenic bacteria, which cause economically important crop diseases and pose a serious threat to world food security. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the regulatory function of RpoN, including swimming motility, flagella synthesis, bacterial growth, type IV pilus (T4Ps), twitching motility, type III secretion system (T3SS), and virulence-associated phenotypes in phytopathogenic bacteria. These findings and knowledge prove the key regulatory role of RpoN in bacterial growth and pathogenesis, as well as lay the groundwork for further elucidation of the complex regulatory network of RpoN in bacteria.

Abstract
Diketopiperazines are potential structures with extensive biological functions, which have attracted much attention of natural product researchers for a long time. These compounds possess a stable six-membered ring, which is an important pharmacophore. The marine organisms have especially been proven to be a wide source for discovering diketopiperazine derivatives. In recent years, more and more interesting bioactive diketopiperazines had been found from various marine habitats. This review article is focused on the new 2,5-diketopiperazines derived from marine organisms (sponges and microorganisms) reported from the secondary half-year of 2014 to the first half of the year of 2021. We will comment their chemical structures, biological activities and sources. The objective is to assess the merit of these compounds for further study in the field of drug discovery.
