Segmented Au/PtCo heterojunction nanowires for efficient formic acid oxidation catalysis

Boosted formic acid electro-oxidation on platinum nanoparticles and "mixed-valence" iron and nickel oxides

The modification of Pt nanoparticles (nano-Pt, assembled electrochemically onto a glassy carbon (GC) substrate) with hybrid multivalent nickel (nano-NiO_x) and iron (nano-FeO_x) oxide nanostructures was intended to steer the mechanism of the formic acid electro-oxidation (FAO) in the desirable dehydrogenation pathway. This binary modification with inexpensive oxides succeeded in mediating the reaction mechanism of FAO by boosting reaction kinetics "electron transfer" and amending the surface geometry of the catalyst against poisoning. The sequence of deposition was optimized where the a-FeO_x/NiO_x/Pt/GC catalyst (where "a" denotes a post-activation step for the catalyst at -0.5 V in 0.5 mol L^-1 NaOH) reserved the best hierarchy. Morphologically, while nano-Pt appeared to be spherical (ca. 100 nm in average diameter), nano-NiO_x appeared as flowered nanoaggregates (ca. 56 nm in average diameter) and nano-FeO_x (after activation) retained a plate-like nanostructure (ca. 38 nm in average diameter and 167 nm in average length). This a-FeO_x/NiO_x/Pt/GC catalyst demonstrated a remarkable catalytic efficiency (125 mA mg_Pt^-1) for FAO that was ca. 12.5 times that of the pristine Pt/GC catalyst with up to five times improvement in the catalytic tolerance against poisoning and up to -214 mV shift in the FAO's onset potential. Evidences for equipping the a-FeO_x/NiO_x/Pt/GC catalyst with the least charge transfer resistance and the highest stability among the whole investigated catalysts are provided and discussed.

Engineering composition-varied Au/PtTe hetero-junction-abundant nanotrough arrays as robust electrocatalysts for ethanol electrooxidation

Pt-based multi-metallic electrocatalysts containing hetero-junctions are found to have superior catalytic performance to composition-equivalent counterparts. However, in bulk solution, controllable preparation of Pt-based hetero-junction electrocatalyst is an extremely random work owing to the complexity of solution reactions. Herein, we develop an interface-confined transformation strategy, subtly achieving Au/PtTe hetero-junction-abundant nanostructures by employing interfacial Te nanowires as sacrificing templates. By controlling the reaction conditions, composition-varied Au/PtTe can be easily obtained, such as Au₇₅/Pt₂₀Te₅, Au₅₅/Pt₃₄Te₁₁, and Au₅/Pt₆₉Te₂₆. Moreover, each Au/PtTe hetero-junction nanostructure appears to be an array consisting of side-by-side Au/PtTe nanotrough units and can be directly used as a catalyst layer without further post-treatment. All Au/PtTe hetero-junction nanostructures show better catalytic activity towards ethanol electrooxidation than commercial Pt/C because of the combining contributions of Au/Pt hetero-junctions and the collective effects of multi-metallic elements, where Au₇₅/Pt₂₀Te₅ exhibits the best electrocatalytic performance among three Au/PtTe nanostructures owing to its optimal composition. This study may provide technically feasible guidance for further maximizing the catalytic activity of Pt-based hybrid catalysts.

Recent Advances in Anode Electrocatalysts for Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cell-II-Platinum-Based Catalysts

Platinum-based catalysts have a long history of application in formic acid oxidation (FAO). The single metal Pt is active in FAO but expensive, scarce, and rapidly deactivates. Understanding the mechanism of FAO over Pt important for the rational design of catalysts. Pt nanomaterials rapidly deactivate because of the CO poisoning of Pt active sites via the dehydration pathway. Alloying with another transition metal improves the performance of Pt-based catalysts through bifunctional, ensemble, and steric effects. Supporting Pt catalysts on a high-surface-area support material is another technique to improve their overall catalytic activity. This review summarizes recent findings on the mechanism of FAO over Pt and Pt-based alloy catalysts. It also summarizes and analyzes binary and ternary Pt-based catalysts to understand their catalytic activity and structure relationship.
