Abstract
Flavonoids are a diversified group of natural substances which were discovered to provide a variety of health benefits in human beings. Vegetables, fruits, wine and tea are the primary flavonoid dietary sources for humans and as the flavonoids are so closely connected to human dietary items and health, it is vital to explore the structural-activity connection. The arrangement, replacement of functional groups, and total number of hydroxyl groups around flavonoid's nucleus structure affect their biological activity, metabolism, and bioavailability. Various flavonoids have been proven to have hepatoprotective properties, that help in the prevention of coronary heart disease. Similarly, these flavonoids also possess anticancer, and anti-inflammatory activities. Flavonoids have been found to have a functional and structural link with their enzyme inhibitory action, that appears to have antiviral effect through acting as antioxidants, damaging cell membranes, blocking enzymes, activating mechanisms of host self-defense, and limiting virus penetration and attaching to cells. Identification, characterization, isolation, and biological role of flavonoids, as well as their uses on health advantages, are all major topics in research and development currently. This review represents a summary of various sources of flavonoids, class, subclass, their chemical structures, biological activities, the pharmacokinetics of flavonoids and various analytical, bioanalytical and electrochemical methods for determination of flavonoids from different matrices.

Abstract
Citrus fruits (CF) are highly consumed worldwide, fresh, processed, or prepared as juices and pies. To illustrate the high economic importance of CF, the global production of these commodities in 2021 was around 98 million tons. CF's composition is considered an excellent source of phenolic compounds (PC) as they have a large amount and variety. Since ancient times, PC has been highlighted to promote several benefits related to oxidative stress disorders, such as chronic diseases and cancer. Recent studies suggest that consuming citrus fruits can prevent some of these diseases. However, due to the complexity of citrus matrices, extracting compounds of interest from these types of samples, and identifying and quantifying them effectively, is not a simple task. In this context, several extractive and analytical proposals have been used. This review discusses current research involving CF, focusing mainly on PC extraction and analysis methods, regarding advantages and disadvantages from the perspective of Green Chemistry.

Abstract
Ascorbic acid (AA) is a powerful antioxidant in food safety and disease treatment. It is of great significance to develop a low-cost, high-stability, and easy-to-operate colorimetric method for quantitative detection of AA in food or human body. Although various nanozymes have been developed for the colorimetric detection of AA, the size regulation of the catalytic center of nanozymes remains a challenge. In this work, we propose a combined strategy of flow chemistry synthesis and pyrolysis to realize the controllable adjustment of the catalytic center size of nanozymes. Zinc-cobalt zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZnCo-ZIFs) with different sizes are synthesized by flow chemistry. Nitrogen-doped carbon materials with different Co catalytic centers (80 nm-10 nm) are then obtained by pyrolysis of ZnCo-ZIFs precursors. Among them, cobalt quantum dot embedded nitrogen-doped carbon (Co QDs/N-C) exhibits excellent oxidase activity, with Vmax and Km of 4.19 × 10-7 M s-1 and 0.12 mM. Therefore, a simple, low-cost, and stable colorimetric method for the detection of AA is established with a good linear relationship (3-500 μM) and low detection limit (0.40 μM). This work has certain guiding significance for the size regulation of catalytic center of nanozyme, and the detection method has broad application prospects in biochemical sensing field.

Abstract
This study introduces an efficient electrochemical method for rapidly identifying the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), which poses threats to individuals with compromised immune systems and cystic fibrosis. Unlike conventional techniques such as polymerase chain reaction, which fails to detect modifications in the resistant properties of microbes due to environmental stress, our proposed electrochemical approach offers a promising alternative. The characterisation analyses, involving microscopic and spectroscopic methods, reveal that the nanocomposite exhibits a crystalline structure, specific atomic vibrational patterns, a cubic surface shape, and distinct elemental compositions. This sensor demonstrates exceptional detection capabilities for P. aeruginosa, with a linear range of 1-23 CFU mL-1 and a low detection limit of 4.0 × 10-3 CFU mL-1. This research not only explores novel electrochemical techniques and the CoFe2O4/AgNPs nanocomposite but also their practical implications in food science, highlighting their relevance across various food samples, water, and soil.

Abstract
Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) have attracted intense attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. In this work, a series of water-stable CsPb(Br/I)3PNCs fluorescent probes were prepared using an anion exchange method. It was found that the PNCs probes could be used to detect ascorbic acid (AA) in water, and interestingly, the FL spectra of the PNCs probes can be adjusted by controlling the concentration of KI in anion exchange to improve the detection selectivity of AA. The high sensitivity and selectivity make CsPb(Br/I)3PNCs an ideal material for AA sensing. The concentration of AA can be linearly measured in the range from 0.01 to 50μM, with a detection limit of 4.2 nM. The reason for the enhanced FL of CsPb(Br/I)3PNCs was studied, and it is considered that AA causes the aggregation of CsPb(Br/I)3PNCs. This strategy of improving the selectivity of the probe to the substrate by adjusting the spectrum will significantly expand the application of PNCs in the field of analysis and detection.

Abstract
This study aimed to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) parameters using response surface methodology (RSM) for the determination of ascorbic acid (AA), antioxidant activities/the half maximal effective concentration (EC50), total phenolic contents (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) of Ethiopian wild Syzygium guineense fruit and seed processed under different drying conditions. The optimizations of the UAE methods for the determination of AA, antioxidant activities (EC50 values), TPC, and TFC were evaluated using response surface methodology (RSM). The extraction time of 15 min, the temperature of 35 °C, extraction solvent composition (methanol:water) of 75 to 25%, and solid-to-solvent ratios of 1:15 w/v were the optimum independent parameters. The experimental and the predicted data of TPC, EC50, and AA were in good agreement with the overall error below 0.01%. It also indicated a hypothesized distribution of predicted data fitted with experimental data. The average TPC, EC50, and AA content in S. guineense fruits and the seed varied from 581.25 ± 37.13 to 1917.40 ± 26.15 mg GAE/100 g, 4.02 ± 0.42 to 155.73 ± 5.11 mg/100 g, and 1.96 ± 0.02 to 0.94 ± 0.00 mg/mL, respectively. This study indicated that this underutilized wild fruit and its seeds can be an alternative source of AA and antioxidant compounds.

Abstract
Goal of current study was fabrication of novel voltammetric nanosensor for the synchronize quantification of ascorbic acid (AA) and paracetamol (PAR) by nickel-cobalt salen complexes encapsulated in the supercages of NaA nanozeolite modified carbon paste electrode (NiCoSalenA/CPE). For this purpose, NiCoSalenA nanocomposite was firstly prepared and characterized by various methods. Also, cyclic voltammetry (CV), choronoamperometry (CHA) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were utilized to evaluate performance of the modified electrodes. The effects of pH and modifier amount were considered on the electrochemical oxidation of AA and PAR on the surface of NiCoSalenA/CPE. Results from this method indicated that pH of 3.0 in phosphate buffer solution (0.1 M) and 15 wt% of NiCoSalenA nanocomposite in the modified CPE results in the maximum current density. The oxidation signals of AA and PAR was amplified affectively at NiCoSalenA/CPE versus unmodified CPE. The limit of detection (LOD) and linear dynamic range (LDR) for the simultaneous measurement of them were founds to be 0.82 and 2.73-80.70 for AA and 0.51 µM, 1.71-32.50 and 32.50-137.60 µM for PAR, respectively. The catalytic rate constants (kcat) were attained to be 3.73 × 107 and 1.27 × 107 cm3 mol-1 s-1 for AA and PAR via CHA method, respectively. Also, the amounts of diffusion coefficient (D) were found to be 1.12 × 10-7 and 1.92 × 10-7 cm2 s-1 for AA and PAR, respectively. The average value of electron transfer rate constant between NiCoSalenA/CPE and PAR was obtained to be 0.016 s-1. The NiCoSalen-A/CPE displayed worthy stability, repeatability and extraordinary recovery for simultaneous measurements of AA and PAR. Application of offered sensor was confirmed by quantifying concentrations of AA and PAR in human serum solution as a real sample.

Filtration experiments with aqueous standard solutions of different molecules showed that NFMs retain low molecular weight antioxidants (i.e., ascorbic and caffeic acids) only at early filtration stages, whereas they remove bitter glycosylated phenolics (i.e., naringin and narirutin) at a more stable ratio, variable according to the membrane thickness. Experiments with fresh grapefruit juice of two varieties (pink and yellow) showed that NFM-filtration reduces (17 to 30%) flavanones associated with the immediate bitterness and allows for the complete removal (>99.9%) of limonin, responsible for the persistent bitterness of many citrus juices. In contrast, the same process causes a lower loss of ascorbic acid (5%) and does not affect acidity, nor sugar concentration. The results confirmed that NFMs feature permselectivity towards bitterness-related compounds. This work highlights the NFM potential as filter devices for the selective reduction of the bitter terpenoid (limonin) and glycosylated flavonoids (naringin and narirutin) from grape juice citrus juices in the production of industrially-relevant beverages.

Abstract
A simple and rapid differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) method using a single-use electroactivated pencil graphite electrode (PGE*) is proposed for the rapid screening of the total content of polyphenolics (TCP) with intermediate antioxidant power (AOP) in grapefruit peel and fresh juice. The results were compared and correlated with those provided by the HPLC-DAD-MS method. NG voltammetric behavior at PGE* was studied by cyclic voltammetry and an oxidation mechanism was suggested. The experimental conditions (type of PGE, electroactivation procedure, pH, nature and concentration of supporting electrolyte) for NG DPV determination were optimized. The NG peak current varied linearly with the concentration in the ranges 1.40 × 10-6-2.00 × 10-5 and 2.00 × 10-5-1.40 × 10-4 mol/L NG and a limit of detection (LoD) of 6.02 × 10-7 mol/L NG was attained. The method repeatability expressed as relative standard deviation was 7.62% for the concentration level of 2.00 × 10-6 mol/L NG. After accumulation for 240 s of NG at PGE* the LoD was lowered to 1.35 × 10-7 mol/L NG, the linear range being 6.00 × 10-7-8.00 × 10-6 mol/L NG. The developed electrochemical system was successfully tested on real samples and proved to be a cost-effective tool for the simple estimation of the TCP with intermediate AOP in citrus fruits.

Abstract
In this paper, a facile and rapid fluorescence "on-off-on" strategy for the detection of chromium (Cr(VI)) and ascorbic acid (AA) was developed, which was based on the water-soluble carbon dots (CDs). The CDs was synthesized by a microwave-assisted treatment of L-tartaric acid, citric acid, and urea. The CDs have many advantages, such as high fluorescence quantum yield (20.5%) and good fluorescence stability. Based on inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching, the fluorescence of the CDs can be quenched by Cr(VI) quickly; while the reduction of IFE and reducing action can make the fluorescence of the CDs recover by AA efficiently. Moreover, under the optimal experimental conditions, the CDs had a good detection performance for Cr(VI) in the range of 0.8 ∼ 189 µM with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.16 µM. The linear detection for AA was ranged from 0.43 to 25.7 µM with a LOD of 0.1 µM. More importantly, the as-constructed fluorescence detecting platform was successfully applied for Cr(VI) and AA detection in the environmental samples and fruit samples, respectively. In addition, the application potential of the CDs in fluorescent films and anti-counterfeiting materials was further discussed in detail. This work will provide a novel idea for designing a portable sensor based on the CDs to quickly and sensitively detect Cr(VI) and AA.

Abstract
Hesperidin is a bioflavonoid occurring in high concentrations in citrus fruits. Its use has been associated with a great number of health benefits, including antioxidant, antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic properties. The food industry uses large quantities of citrus fruit, especially for the production of juice. It results in the accumulation of huge amounts of by-products such as peels, seeds, cell and membrane residues, which are also a good source of hesperidin. Thus, its extraction from these by-products has attracted considerable scientific interest with aim to use as natural antioxidants. In this review, the extraction and determination methods for quantification of hesperidin in fruits and by-products are presented and discussed as well as its stability and biological activities.

Abstract
Polyphenols with high chemical diversity are present in vegetables both in the edible parts and by-products. A large proportion of them remains unabsorbed along the gastrointestinal tract, being accumulated in the colon, where they are metabolized by the intestinal microbiota. These polyphenols have been found to have "prebiotic-like" effects. The edible plant industry generates tons of residues called by-products, which consist of unutilized plant tissues (peels, husks, calyxes and seeds). Their disposal requires special and costly treatments to avoid environmental complications. Reintroducing these by-products into the value chain using technological and biotechnological practices is highly appealing since many of them contain nutrients and bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, with many health-promoting properties. Edible plant by-products as a source of polyphenols highlights the need for analytical methods. Analytical methods are becoming increasingly selective, sensitive and precise, but the great breakthrough lies in the pretreatment of the sample and in particular in the extraction methods. This review shows the importance of edible plant by-products as a source of polyphenols, due to their prebiotic effect, and to compile the most appropriate analytical methods for the determination of the total content of phenolic compounds as well as the detection and quantification of individual polyphenols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous reports show that herbal medicines can be utilized in the treatment of different liver disorders. In this study, antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer activities of individual as well as combined 80% ethanolic extracts of Artemisia absinthium leaves and Citrus paradisi peels were investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS Values of total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), DPPH-radical scavenging activity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were measured to explore the antioxidant capacity. To assess antibacterial activity, four bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, and Klebsiella pneumoniae) were used. Anticancer activity was assessed on Huh-7 (liver cancer) and Vero (non-cancerous) cell lines. FRAP activity of combined plants extract was higher as compared to their individual effect; the trend did not hold in the case of DPPH-radical scavenging activity. Antibacterial activity of combined extracts by disk diffusion method was observed only against E.coli. MTT results indicated that both plants had a cytotoxic effect on Huh-7 cell line but did not show any effect on Vero cell line. Our data showed a strong negative correlation between the amount of TPC, TFC, & DPPH radicals-scavenging activity and viability of Huh-7 cell line.However, no effect was shown on the non-cancerous cell line. CONCLUSION The ethanolic extracts of Artemisia absinthium leaves and Citrus paradisi peels can be used against liver cancer because of their antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticancer activities.

Abstract
Herein, the effects of nanostructured modifications of a gold electrode surface in the development of electrochemical sensors for L-ascorbic acid detection have been investigated. In particular, a bare gold electrode has been modified by electrodeposition of gold single-walled carbon nanotubes (Au/SWCNTs) and by the formation of a highly nanoporous gold (h-nPG) film. The procedure has been realized by sweeping the potential between +0.8 V and 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl for 25 scans in a suspension containing 5 mg/mL of SWCNTs in 10 mM HAuCl4 and 2.5 M NH4Cl solution for Au/SWCNTs modified gold electrode. A similar procedure was applied for a h-nPG electrode in a 10 mM HAuCl4 solution containing 2.5 M NH4Cl, followed by applying a fixed potential of −4 V vs. Ag/AgCl for 60 s. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to characterize the properties of the modified electrodes. The developed sensors showed strong electrocatalytic activity towards ascorbic acid oxidation with enhanced sensitivities of 1.7 × 10−2 μA μM−1cm−2 and 2.5 × 10−2 μA μM−1cm−2 for Au/SWCNTs and h-nPG modified electrode, respectively, compared to bare gold electrode (1.0 × 10−2 μA μM−1cm−2). The detection limits were estimated to be 3.1 and 1.8 μM, respectively. The h-nPG electrode was successfully used to determine ascorbic acid in human urine with no significant interference and with satisfactory recovery levels.

Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) presents a promising possibility for analyzing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) due to its low reagent consumption, high analysis speed, and enhanced efficiency. Herein we review the employment of CE for analyzing the effective components in TCM and identifying TCM via a fingerprint. Furthermore, we discuss the application of state-of-the-art capillary electrophoresis modes for screening enzyme inhibitors and investigating the interactions between TCM and plasma proteins. The review concludes with recommendations for future studies and improvements in this field of research. The general development trend identified in this review indicates that the application of CE has significantly improved TCM assay performance.

Abstract
Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and solvent-free microwave extraction and Soxhlet extraction were applied to Ray Ruby grapefruit leaves (Citrus paradisi Macf.) to compare extract efficiency. Face centered composite designs were constructed via response surface methodology. Effects of factors of MAE were investigated on total phenolic content (TPC) and naringin content (NC). The optimized conditions were established as 1.4 kWL-1 for microwave power density, 20.00 gL-1 for solid/solvent ratio, 218.180 s for extraction time, while responses were calculated as 14.210 mg of gallic acid equivalent per g of the dried leaf (mg GAE g-1DL) and 13.198 mg of naringin per g of dried leaf (mg Ng-1DL) for TPC and NC, respectively. SFME and classical Soxhlet methods were also conducted for comparison reasons.

Abstract
This study aimed to carry out an exhaustive chemical characterization of citrus (orange, mandarin, and grapefruit) decoctions as well as the residues obtained during the decoction process (by-products). The citrus decoctions were rich in hesperidin, naringin, and narirutin, but carotenoids and phytosterols were not detected. Interestingly, these flavanones were found in a higher concentration in the extractable polyphenol fraction of the citrus decoction by-products. Moreover, the greatest content of hesperidin and naringin was found bound to the food matrix by ether/ester bonds. Violaxanthin and β-cryptoxanthin were found as major carotenoids in the orange and mandarin decoction by-products, respectively, whereas the grapefruit decoction by-product showed a low content of carotenoids. All citrus by-products showed β-sitosterol as the major phytosterol, followed by β-campesterol. Therefore, the by-products obtained during the elaboration of citrus decoctions are rich sources of bioactive compounds that can be used for the development of functional foods or dietary supplements.

Abstract
Simultaneous high sensitivity detection of biomolecules is important for research in medicine, living cells and environmental samples. In this work, a water stable coordination polymer, [Cd2(bptc)(4,4'-bpy)(H2O)3]ˑH2O 1 (H4bptc = 2,3,3',4'-biphenyl tetracarboxylic acid, 4,4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), was designed and successfully synthesized as a luminescent sensor for simultaneous recognition of Ascorbic Acid (AA) and L-Tryptophan (L-Trp) based on luminescent -OFF and -ON, respectively. Importantly, the proposed sensing system showed an excellent performance with high KSV values of 4.85 × 104 M-1, 9.60 × 107 M-1 and low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.28 nM, 63 nM, respectively. In addition, the probable mechanisms are also discussed. The luminescent quenching behavior by AA can be mainly attributed to the static resonance energy transfer between complex 1 and the analytes. Whereas the enhancing effect of L-Trp comes from the intrinsic strong luminescence for L-Trp itself and photo-competitive mechanism between CP 1 sensor and L-Trp, supposedly. In addition, the repeatability of both systems were also investigated.

Abstract
The Citrus species from family Rutaceae has worldwide applications such as cardiovascular and gastrointestinal problems. Phytochemical investigations have shown that these plants have constituents including flavonoids, limonoids and carotenoids. There are many reports on a wide range of activities such as antiinflammatory, anti-oxidant, immunomodulatory, metabolic, cardiovascular and neuroprotective effects. In the current review, we discuss information regarding botany, phytochemistry, ethnobotany uses, traditional knowledge and pharmacological aspects of the Citrus species.

Abstract
En la actualidad, las técnicas de extracción convencionales como la maceración, soxhlet y el calentamiento-reflujo entre otras, han seguido utilizándose debido a su principal ventaja como procesos de extracción más económicos. Sin embargo, estas metodologías presentan diversas desventajas, como largos tiempos de extracción y requerimiento de altas cantidades de disolventes. Es por lo hasta aquí expuesto que se han implementado metodologías de extracción alternativas que cumplen con los principios de la química verde, como son las extracciones asistidas: por ultrasonido (EAU), microondas (EAM) y con fluidos supercríticos (EAFS). Estos métodos de extracción, alternos a los convencionales, han logrado despertar el interés de los investigadores como futuras perspectivas de aplicación, con altos rendimientos, para la recuperación de compuestos bioactivos de los residuos de frutos cítricos, en menor tiempo de extracción, empleando disolventes verdes. El objetivo de la presente revisión es dar a conocer el impacto de las metodologías de extracción alternativas con un enfoque en el aprovechamiento y revalorización de los residuos de frutos cítricos, debido a que éstos presentan una gran diversidad de compuestos de interés para la industria farmacéutica, alimentaria y biotecnológica.

Abstract
One of the most abundant wastes from all around the world is nutrient resources. Among them, fruits, their extracts, and residues comprise a major portion, which contain many valuable components that get lost during disposal or become burden on the shrinking landfills. These concerns are addressed by seeking sustainable processing methods that would have a minimal environmental impact. The crops contain renewable chemicals which are useful for catalysis, wastewater treatment, or preparation of nanomaterials; there has been an upsurge for the industrial applications of (nano)materials as their environmental and catalytic appliances is a fascinating subject to design cheaper and safer catalytic systems. Due to the excellent chemical properties of the fruit extracts, they have garnered attention as cost-effective catalysts and support materials. This review focuses on the preparation of (nano)materials and their catalytic and environmental applications and highlights the potential appliances and industrial benefits derived from these low-cost renewable and sustainable greener sources thus essentially converting waste into wealth.

Abstract
Biomass-based carbon nanospheres derived from Mimosa pudica (commonly called "Touch-me-not") smeared on carbon fiber paper have been used as a host matrix for electrochemical deposition of palladium nanoparticles. The physicochemical characterization of modified electrodes was performed by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to study the electroanalytical properties of the electrodes. The modified electrode demostrated an excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of a flavonoid, morin, which gave a sensitive anodic peak at -0.30 V (vs SCE). An ultralow-level detection limit of 572 fM with a linear dynamic range of 37.50-130 pM was achieved. The proposed electrochemical sensor was successfully employed for the analysis of morin in mulberry and guava leaves. This is a sustainable engineering approach where a perfect unique host matrix is created using carbon nanospheres from biomass.

Abstract
Citrus fruits are extensively grown and much consumed around the world. Eighteen percent of total citrus cultivars are destined for industrial processes, and as a consequence, large amounts of waste are generated. Citrus waste is a potential source of high biological value compounds, which can be used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries but whose final disposal may pose a problem due to economic and environmental factors. At the same time, the emerging need to reduce the environmental impact of citrus waste and its responsible management has increased. For these reasons, the study of the use of non-conventional methods to extract high biological value compounds such as carotenoids, polyphenols, essential oils, and pectins from this type of waste has become more urgent in recent years. In this review, the effectiveness of technologies such as ultrasound assisted extraction, microwave assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, pressurized water extraction, pulsed electric field, high-voltage electric discharges, and high hydrostatic pressures is described and assessed. A wide range of information concerning the principal non-conventional methods employed to obtain high-biological-value compounds from citrus waste as well as the most influencing factors about each technology are considered.

Abstract
Enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) were popular methods used to extract bioactive compounds from citrus peels, by-products of fruit processing industry. In this study, the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), naringin and hesperidin contents, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the extracts from pomelo peels using the combined enzyme and ultrasound-assisted extraction (E-UAE) or ultrasound and enzyme-assisted extraction (U-EAE) technique were investigated and compared with those extracted using the EAE and UAE. The optimal EAE conditions were as follows: enzyme concentration of 2%, water-solid ratio of 40 ml/g, incubation temperature of 50°C, and extraction time of 60 min, whereas the optimal UAE conditions were ultrasonic energy of 40 kHz, water-solid ratio of 40 ml/g at room temperature, and extraction time of 60 min. The results indicate that the total phenolics, total flavonoids, naringin, and hesperidin contents of the extracts significantly increased in the following order of the extraction techniques: UAE < EAE < U-EAE < E-UAE (p<0.05). The combined E-UAE technique was the most effective technique for bioactive compound extraction with the highest antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The results also indicate that chemical composition and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the extracts were different depending on the pomelo species.

Abstract
Metal nanoclusters (NCs) are highly desirable as active catalysts due to their highly active surface atoms. Among the reported metal clusters, nickel nanoclusters (Ni NCs) have been less well developed than others, such as gold, silver and copper. Herein a simple method is developed to synthesize atomically precise Ni clusters with the molecular formular of Ni6(C12H25S)12. Moreover, the single crystal of the Ni6(C12H25S)12 cluster is also obtained. The composition, morphology and optical properties of the prepared Ni6 clusters are characterized by X-ray crystallography, XPS, XRD, SEM, HRTEM, FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The Ni cluster is composed of six nickel atoms that form a hexagonal ring with an exterior 1-dodecanethiol shell, resembling a double crown. Meanwhile, the Ni6 NCs can be self-assembled into nanosheets due to their uniform size. It was found that the Ni6(C12H25S)12 clusters loaded on carbon black exhibit higher electrocatalytic activity than Ni nanoparticles towards ascorbic acid (AA) oxidation. The Ni6 clusters show high sensing performance for AA with a wide linear range (1-3212 μM) and a low detection limit of 0.1 μM (S/N = 3). The significantly enhanced catalytic activity can be ascribed to the high fraction of surface Ni atoms with low coordination in the sub-nanometer clusters. The present work not only provides a straightforward method for synthesizing atomically precise metal clusters but also indicates that ultrasmall Ni clusters can be used as highly efficient catalysts for the electrochemical detection of AA.

Abstract
In this work, a Cu-based nanosheet metal–organic framework (MOF), HKUST-1, was synthesised using a solvent method at room temperature. Its morphology, structure and composition were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and elemental analysis (EA). This material was then loaded onto the surface of an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode to catalyse the electrochemical oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA). An equal-electron-equal-proton reaction was deduced from the pH investigation, and a diffusion-controlled process was reinforced by the dynamics study. Under optimal conditions, the oxidation peak current at +0.02 V displayed a linear relationship with the concentration of AA within the ranges of 0.01–25 and 25–265 mM, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) was 3 μM at S/N of 3. The superb response could be ascribed to the porous nanosheet structure of HKUST-1, which enhanced both the effective surface area and the electron transfer ability significantly. Moreover, the novel AA sensor demonstrated good reproducibility, favourable stability and high sensitivity towards glucose, uric acid (UA), dopamine (DA) and several amino acids. It was also successfully applied to the real sample testing of various AA-containing tablets. Abstract
To achieve a rapid, sensitive, and economical method for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA) in the presence of Fe3+, a nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N,S-co-CDs) based fluorescence sensing system was developed. In this work, N,S-co-CDs were successfully synthesized via a one-step microwave-assisted method within 2.5 min using ammonium citrate and L-cysteine as precursors. The fluorescence of N,S-co-CDs was quenched (off ) by Fe3+ through a static-quenching mechanism. Subsequently, the fluorescence was recovered (on) after introducing AA into the quenched system, which was attributed to the reduction effect of AA for Fe3+. Therefore, a switch-on sensor (N,S-co-CDs/Fe3+ system) was developed for AA detection. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) of 2.31 μmol/L for AA was obtained over a linear range from 0 to 150 μmol/L. Furthermore, the proposed sensing method was successfully applied to detect AA in processed fruit juice with satisfactory results. The most important is that the sensor derived from a microwave-assisted method has simple and eco-friendly synthesis processes, is rapid, and has high detection efficiency. Therefore, such a switch-on sensor may be a promising candidate sensor for AA detection in processed fruit samples.

Abstract
The peel of Citrus maxima (C. maxima) is the primary byproducts during the process of fruit or juice in food industries, and it was always considered as biomass waste for further treatments. In this study, the authors reported a simple and eco-friendly method to synthesise gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using C. maxima peel extract as reducing and capping agents. The synthesised AuNPs were characterised by UV-visible spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The UV-visible spectrum of the AuNPs colloid showed a characteristic peak at 540 nm. The peaks of XRD analysis at (2θ) 38.30°, 44.28°, 64.62°, 77.57° and 81.75° were assigned to (111), (200), (220), (311) and (222) planes of the face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice of gold. The TEM images showed that AuNPs were nearly spherical in shape with the size of 8-25 nm. The FTIR spectrum revealed that some bioactive compounds capped the surface of synthesised AuNPs. The biosynthesised AuNPs performed strong catalytic activity in degradation of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol and good antibacterial activity against both gram negative (Escherichia coli) and gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacterium. The synthesis procedure was proved simple, cost effective and environment friendly.

Abstract
Pomelo fruitlet is a side-product of pomelo, and this study aimed to extract the antioxidative flavonoid compounds from pomelo fruitlets with high efficiency through ultrasonic-associated microwave methods. Scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated that the spatial structure of the pomelo fruitlet powder was changed; microwaves and ultrasonic waves facilitated the formation of globular and curved surfaces, respectively. Ultrasonic-microwave synergistic pretreatment resulted in significantly higher yield. Each type of flavonoid compound was characterized using PR-LCMS analysis, and naringin with high nutritive value was detected in all groups. After purifying the flavone fractions with AB-8 macroporous resin, naringin, 2''-O-acetyl-3'-O-methylrutin, and 5,7,8,3'-tetrahydroxy-3,4'-dimethoxy were identified, which could act as free radical scavengers to protect erythrocytes from AAPH-induced hemolysis. This study strongly improved the effects of ultrasonic-microwave synergetic methods on the high utilization of pomelo fruitlets, especially in terms of flavonoid extraction and bioavailability.
