Analysis of benzobicyclon and its metabolite in brown rice and rice straw after field application using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry

Optimization of a QuEChERS-LC-MS/MS method for 51 pesticide residues followed by determination of the residue levels and dietary intake risk assessment in foodstuffs

A modified QuEChERS purification-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method has been developed to determine 51 pesticide residues with newly established maximum residue limits (MRLs) in foodstuffs. Samples were extracted with acetonitrile under citrate-buffered conditions and purified using a modified QuEChERS method employing hydroxylated MWCNTs, SAX, and C18. The limits of quantification ranged from 0.2 to 9.8 µg/kg. Recoveries in ten different foodstuffs ranged from 70.2% to 117.9%, with relative standard deviations between 2.3% and 19.9% at three spiking levels. This method was applied to analyze 352 market samples, detecting 14 pesticides in 97 samples. Notably, Afidopyropen, cyantraniliprole, and fluxapyroxad residues in vegetables exhibited a consistent pattern of higher levels in the spring and winter and lower levels in the summer and autumn. Moreover, the risk assessments for acute and chronic dietary exposure to the 14 detected pesticides indicated that the %ADI and %ARfD were well below 100%.

Cobalt (II) complex as a fluorescent sensing platform for the selective and sensitive detection of triketone HPPD inhibitors

4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvatedioxygenase (HPPD) is a Fe(II)/Co(II)-dependent enzyme which has become one of the most effective herbicide targets. HPPD inhibitors have been developed as efficient herbicides for resistant weed control. Developing a method for efficient and rapid HPPD inhibitors detection is still challenging. N-n-butyl-4-methylhydrazinecarbothioamide-1,8-naphthalimide (NMN) was synthesized and used to detect Co²⁺ efficiently with the limit of detection (LOD) of 7.82 nM with a turn-on fluorescence. Herein a novel fluorescent complex, NMN‒Co²⁺ was employed to determine HPPD inhibitors which performed a turn-off effect in the sensing process based on the competitive coordination between the probe and HPPD with Co²⁺. The LODs for three commercial triketone HPPD inhibitors (mesotrione, tembotrione and NTBC) were 6.60 nM, 7.37 nM and 10.22 nM with good sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, the present probe has potentials to quantitatively detect mesotrione and tembotrione in real samples.

Dissipation kinetics and pre-harvest residue limit of pyriofenone in oriental melon (Cucumis melo Var. makuwa) grown under regulated climatic conditions

A high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection was used to estimate the disappearance rates as well as the pre-harvest residue limits of pyriofenone in oriental melon (Cucumis melo var. makuwa) grown under greenhouse conditions in two different locations (A and B) in Seongju, Republic of Korea. The identity of the compound in standard solution and representative field incurred samples was confirmed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The method was validated in terms of linearity, limits of detection and quantification, accuracy (expressed as recovery) and precision (expressed as relative standard deviation) for accurate and precise quantitation. Notably, the residual levels of field incurred samples collected over days 0-10 post-application were below the maximum residue level (0.2 mg/kg) established by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Site A showed lower residue levels and a higher decline rate than site B, which might be attributed to seasonal variation (high temperature) and increased metabolic and enzyme profiling in the mature fruits. The half-lives were similar, 4.9 and 4.3 days, at sites A and B, respectively. Using the pre-harvest residue limit, we predicted the residue amounts at 10 and 5 days before harvest, which resulted in concentrations lower than the provisional maximum residue level at harvest time.

Hydrolytic Activation Kinetics of the Herbicide Benzobicyclon in Simulated Aquatic Systems

Herbicide resistance is a growing concern for weeds in California rice fields. Benzobicyclon (BZB; 3-(2-chloro-4-(methylsulfonyl)benzoyl)-2-phenylthiobicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-en-4-one) has proven successful against resistant rice field weeds in Asia. A pro-herbicide, BZB forms the active agent, benzobicyclon hydrolysate (BH), in water; however, the transformation kinetics are not understood for aquatic systems, particularly flooded California rice fields. A quantitative experiment was performed to assess the primary mechanism and kinetics of BZB hydrolysis to BH. Complete conversion to BH was observed for all treatments. Basic conditions (pH 9) enhanced the reaction, with half-lives ranging from 5 to 28 h. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) hindered transformation, which is consistent with other base-catalyzed hydrolysis reactions. BH was relatively hydrolytically stable, with 18% maximum loss after 5 days. Results indicate BZB is an efficient pro-herbicide under aqueous conditions such as those of a California rice field, although application may be best suited for fields with recirculating tailwater systems.

In the title compound, C22H19ClO4S2 [systematic name: 3-(2-chloro-4-mesylbenzo-yl)-4-(phenyl-sulfan-yl)bi-cyclo-[3.2.1]oct-3-en-2-one], which is an unclassified herbicide, the dihedral angle between the plane of the phenyl and chloro-benzene rings is 19.9 (2)°. In the crystal, C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link adjacent mol-ecules, generating two-dimensional networks extending parellel to (011).
