[Determination of 10 organic acids in alcoholic products by ion chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry]. Se Pu 2022; 40:1128-1135. Abstract
A method was developed for the determination of 10 organic acids in liquor, yellow rice wine, and dry red wine by ion chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (IC-MS/MS). First, the liquor samples were diluted with deionized water, degassed with nitrogen, and analyzed by IC-MS/MS. Then, the yellow rice wine and dry red wine samples were purified with different solid-phase extraction cartridges. Finally, the GCB solid-phase extraction cartridge was selected for purification, diluted with deionized water, and analyzed by IC-MS/MS. The samples were separated using a Dionex IonPac AS11-HC anion analysis column with high capacity and strong hydrophilicity, with an KOH aqueous solution as the eluent, which was produced by an automatic generator for gradient elution. After being suppressed using a suppressor, the eluent was injected directly into the electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS), ionized in negative ion mode, detected in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, and quantified using an external standard method. Oxalic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, quinic acid, and aconitic acid showed good linear relationships in the range of 0.05-2 mg/L. Succinic acid and lactic acid showed good linearities in the range of 0.05-5 mg/L and 0.05-10 mg/L, respectively. The correlation coefficients (r2) were >0.99. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were 1.0-8.0 μg/L and 3.5-26.5 μg/L, respectively. The average recoveries ranged from 83.0% to 112.1%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were <9.1% in spiked samples at three levels. The proposed method allowed easy pretreatment without using organic solvents or derivatization processing. Overall, the proposed method is accurate, rapid, sensitive, and it is suitable for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of the 10 organic acids in three wine samples. Moreover, it can be used for the determination of flavor and quality of alcoholic products.

Abstract
Sucrose is a primary metabolite in plants, a source of energy, a source of carbon atoms for growth and development, and a regulator of biochemical processes. Most of the traditional analytical chemistry methods for sucrose quantification in plants require sample treatment (with consequent tissue destruction) and complex facilities, that do not allow real-time sucrose quantification at ultra-low concentrations (nM to pM range) under in vivo conditions, limiting our understanding of sucrose roles in plant physiology across different plant tissues and cellular compartments. Some of the above-mentioned problems may be circumvented with the use of bio-compatible ligands for molecular recognition of sucrose. Nevertheless, problems such as the signal-noise ratio, stability, and selectivity are some of the main challenges limiting the use of molecular recognition methods for the in vivo quantification of sucrose. In this review, we provide a critical analysis of the existing analytical chemistry tools, biosensors, and synthetic ligands, for sucrose quantification and discuss the most promising paths to improve upon its limits of detection. Our goal is to highlight the criteria design need for real-time, in vivo, highly sensitive and selective sucrose sensing capabilities to enable further our understanding of living organisms, the development of new plant breeding strategies for increased crop productivity and sustainability, and ultimately to contribute to the overarching need for food security.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Codonopsis Radix (CR) is an edible food and traditional Chinese herb medicine that is widely used in China and Southeast Asia. Saccharides, including fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and polysaccharides, are among the most important active substances in CR. However, a quality evaluation of CR based on oligosaccharides has not been conducted. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to establish a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with charged aerosol detector method (HPLC-CAD) for the quality evaluation of CR and processed products based on analysis of monosaccharides and oligosaccharides. METHOD A sensitive and rapid HPLC-CAD method for the simultaneous determination of two monosaccharides (D-fructose and D-glucose), sucrose, and FOS (GF2-GF6) was established to evaluate the quality of CR for the first time. In the present study, 65 batches of CR from three species of the genus Codonopsis were analysed using multivariate statistical techniques. Furthermore, the effects of cultivation management measures (plant growth retardants supply, harvesting time, and growth period) and primary process (drying methods) in the production areas on the target compounds were studied by analysing 34 batches of processed samples. RESULTS Different varieties of CR resulted in considerably different saccharide contents. Cultivation management measures and processing method remarkably affected the quality of CR. Low concentration of plant growth retardants was recommended. The best harvest time is in October after 4 years of growth. Dryer-drying was suggested to meet the requirement for large-scale processing. CONCLUSION This method would provide an efficient analytical tool for monosaccharides and oligosaccharides of CR and contribute to the improvement of CR quality.

Abstract
Carbohydrates in foods and other matrices plays vital roles in their diverse biological functions. Carbohydrates serve not only as functional substances but also as structural materials, such as components of membranes, and participate in cellular recognition. The fact that carbohydrates are indispensable has contributed to the need for pretreatment and analytical methods to be developed for their characterization. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of carbohydrate pretreatment and determination methods in various matrices. The pretreatment methods include simple and more developed approaches (e.g., solid phase extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, and different microextraction methods, among others). The analytical methods include those by liquid chromatography (including high-performance anion-exchange chromatography), capillary electrophoresis, gas chromatography and supercritical fluid chromatography, and others. Different pretreatment methods and determination approaches are updated, compared, and discussed. Moreover, we discuss and compare the strengths and weaknesses of different methods and suggest their future prospects.

Abstract
The simultaneous determination of monosaccharides present in the activated sludge would be crucial to understand the water treatment mechanism. Herein, an ion chromatography-mass spectrometry (IC-MS) with online pretreatment of column switching technique was proposed to analyze monosaccharides hydrolyzed from extracellular polysaccharides in the activated sludge. When the matrix was eliminated in the first dimension, monosaccharides were immediately identified by IC-MS. The improved ionization efficiency was achieved with the addition of T-joint prior to MS. During the performance test, our established method showed excellent detection limits ranging from 0.34 to 2.15 μg/L for all sugar targets. Great linearity (R ≥ 0.9955) was also achieved using this method in the range from 0.01 to 5 mg/L. Furthermore, the average recoveries were obtained between 84.82 and 113.46%. RSDs for peak areas and retention times were determined as 3.76% and 0.27%, respectively. Finally, this approach provided a rapid, convenient, and practical determination of monosaccharides in the activated sludge, which would be helpful for the analysis of monosaccharides derived from other biological samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Honeydew is valuable food source for predators that can build predator numbers and strengthen biological control. Honeydew excreted by hemipterans often supplements the diets of their predators and parasitoids. However, dense sticky honeydew also creates a difficult foraging environment, potentially limiting predator efficiency. RESULTS We examined the benefits and costs of honeydew excreted by the pear psylla (Cacopsylla chinensis [Yang and Li]) for its key predator in much of Asia, the anthocorid bug Orius sauteri (Poppius). We found these predators spent more time foraging and laid more eggs in the presence of psyllid honeydew compared to the control. However, predators more often foraged among psylla without honeydew than those coated in honeydew. This suggests that while O. sauteri recognized honeydew as a useful cue to prey presence, the predators were more likely to attack pear psylla lacking the sugary excretion. In foraging trials, honeydew consistently reduced the number of psyllids killed by the predator, suggesting it limited O. sauteri mobility or reduced the nutritional value of psyllids as prey. We also found slowed development, reduced longevity, and reduced fecundity of O. sauteri reared on moth eggs (Sitotroga cerealella [Olivier]) coated in honeydew compared to those reared on moth eggs alone. CONCLUSION Altogether, our results suggest that psyllid honeydew could serve as a prey-location and oviposition cue for O. sauteri. However, honeydew also limited predator foraging with the potential to limit biological control. More generally, honeydew might form an important type of defense for stationary feeders like psyllids. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
There are increasing concerns about the dietary risks of neonicotinoids (NNIs); therefore their sensitive and accurate determination in dietary products is indispensable. However, the complex composition of agricultural food matrixes makes their extraction and quantitative determination a challenging task. Realizing this need, we herein report a simple, cost-effective, selective and sensitive fluorescence analytical workflow for analyses of two non-fluorescent neonicotinoids imidacloprid (IMI) and clothianidin (CLT) in six complex food samples (honey, ginger, durian, apple, tomato, cucumber) by online clean-up of sample extracts using two-dimensional ion chromatography (2D-IC) and a subsequent online post column UV induced fluorescence detection system. This online clean-up setup has proven advantageous to improve the limit of detection, potentially diminish matrix effects, and reduce analysis time and labor. The developed method showed excellent analytical figures of merit including linearity, selectivity, repeatability, recovery, and resolution for analysis of IMI and CLT in food samples. A 2D-IC system was successfully fabricated for clean isocratic chromatographic separations and sensitive post column UV induced fluorescence determination of two NNIs in six complex food samples.![]()

Abstract
Honey is a natural sweet substance produced by bees (Apis mellifera). In this work, the main parameters used in routine quality control of honey and the most commonly used analytical methods for their determination are reviewed. Honey can be adulterated with cheaper sweeteners or, indirectly, by feeding the bees with sugars. Therefore, methods for detecting and quantifying adulteration are necessary. Chromatographic techniques are widely used in honey analysis. More recently, techniques such as Raman, near-infrared, mid-infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in combination with chemometric data processing have been proposed. However, spectroscopy does not allow the determination of enzyme activities, one criteria of great importance for the honey trade. Methylglyoxal is an interesting compound for its antibacterial properties. Methods for its determination are also reviewed.
