Abstract
Hg2+ contamination poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. Although gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) have been utilized as fluorescence probes or colorimetric nanozymes for performing Hg2+ assays by using a single method, designing multifunctional nanoclusters as fluorescent nanozyme remains challenging. Herein, Ce-aggregated gold nanoclusters (Ce-Au NCs) were reported with "three in one" functions to generate strong fluorescence, excellent peroxidase-like activity, and the highly specific recognition of Hg2+ via its metallophilic interaction. A portable fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode sensing device based on Ce-Au NCs was developed for on-site visual analysis of Hg2+. In the presence of Hg2+, fluorescence was effectively quenched and the paper-based chips gradually darkened from green till they became completely absent, while peroxidase-like activity was significantly enhanced. Two independent signals were captured by one identification unit, which provided self-validation to improve reliability and accuracy. Therefore, this work presents a simple synthesis of a multifunctional fluorescent nanozyme, and the developed portable device for on-site visual detection has considerable potential for application in the rapid on-site analysis of heavy metal ions in the environment.

Abstract
This study reports a metal-enhanced fluorescence chemodosimeter for highly sensitive detection of Hg2+ ions. Silica-coated Au nanoparticles (Au@SiO2 NPs) with a pinhole-free 4-5 nm shell were synthesized and functionalized with a monolayer of turn-on fluorescent probes. Compared to other organic fluorescent probes suffering from poor biocompatibility and detection limits, this design of a monolayer of turn-on fluorescent probes immobilized on the Au@SiO2 NPs with a pinhole-free 4-5 nm shell avoids fluorescence quenching and allows the fluorescent probe within the field of the inner Au NPs to experience metal-enhanced fluorescence. With this design, the chemodosimeter permits fluorescence emission in the presence of Hg2+ ions, because they trigger the ring-opening reaction of the fluorescent probe immobilized on the Au@SiO2 NPs. Additionally, the fluorescent probe is distanced by the thin SiO2 shell from directly attaching to the metallic Au NPs, which not only avoids fluorescence quenching but allows the fluorescent probe within the long-ranged field of the inner Au NPs to experience metal-enhanced fluorescence. As a result, the detection limit for the chemodosimeter can reach up to 5.0 × 10-11 M, nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that achieved for the free fluorescent probe. We also demonstrate the acquisition of images of Hg2+ in HTC116 cells and zebrafish using a simple fluorescence confocal imaging technique. The fluorescence response results for HTC116 cells and zebrafish show that the probes can permeate into cells and organisms. Considering the availability of the many organic fluorescent probes that have been designed, the current designed metal-enhanced fluorescence chemodosimeter holds great potential for fluorescence detection of diverse species and fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure. This review presents an update on the application of polymeric materials in solid-phase extraction used in nonchromatographic methods for speciation analysis.

Abstract
Field and sensitive analysis of mercury species in seafood is helpful to assess the risk of human exposure to mercury, but the cumbersome pretreatment process is time-consuming and laborious. Herein, a simple one-pot pretreatment system is designed for extraction, separation, and enrichment of inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) and methylmercury (MeHg) in fish, and coupled to dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) microplasma optical emission spectrometry (OES). Both Hg(II) and MeHg species in fish can be effectively extracted by tetramethylammonium hydroxide under ultrasound, then separated from the fish matrix by vapor generation and photochemical vapor generation, and finally enriched on the activated carbon electrode tips. Mercury trapped on the activated carbon electrode tips can be rapidly released to produce OES under the DBD microplasma excitation for quantitative analysis. The pretreatment and analysis of a batch of 12 samples are completed within 50 min, and the extraction efficiency of total mercury is up to 90% for 100 mg of freeze-dried fish or 86% for 1 g of fresh fish. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limits are 2 μg kg-1 for Hg(II) and 1.2 μg kg-1 for MeHg in freeze-dried fish, and precisions are 3.2% for Hg(II) and 3.9% for MeHg. The present method is applied to the analysis of the certified reference material and real marine fishes, giving rise to spiked recoveries of 95-103%. The present system hardly leads to MeHg and Hg(II) transforming into each other during extraction, providing a simple, convenient, and low-cost analytical tool to evaluate the risk of mercury species in fish.

Abstract
A novel sulfur-bridged metal-organic framework (MOF) [Co(TIC4R-I)0.25Cl2]·3CH3OH (Co-TIC4R-I) based on thiacalix[4]arene derivatives was successfully obtained using a solvothermal method. Remarkably, adjacent TIC4R-I ligands were linked via Co(II) cations to form a three-dimensional (3D) microporous architecture. Subsequently, Co-TIC4R-I was modified on a glassy carbon electrode (Co-TIC4R-I/GCE) to produce an electrochemical sensor for the detection of heavy-metal ions (HMIs), namely, Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+, in aqueous solutions. It was found that Co-TIC4R-I/GCE exhibited wide linear detection ranges of 0.10-17.00, 0.05-16.00, 0.05-10.00, and 0.80-15.00 μM for Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+, respectively, in addition to low limit of detection (LOD) values of 0.017, 0.008, 0.016, and 0.007 μM. Moreover, the fabricated sensor employed for the simultaneous detection of these metals has achieved LOD values of 0.0067, 0.0027, 0.0064, and 0.0037 μM for Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+, respectively. The sensor also exhibited satisfactory selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Furthermore, the relative standard deviation (RSD) values of Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ were 3.29, 3.73, 3.11, and 1.97%, respectively. Moreover, the fabricated sensor could sensitively detect HMIs in various environmental samples. The high performance of the sensor was attributed to its sulfur adsorption sites and abundant phenyl rings. Overall, the sensor described herein provides an efficient method for the determination of extremely low concentrations of HMIs in aqueous samples.

A "bottle-around-ship" method to encapsulated carbon nitride and CdTe quantum dots in ZIF-8 as the dual emission fluorescent probe for detection of mercury (II) ion. ANAL SCI 2022; 38:1305-1312. Abstract
A facile and efficient "bottle-around-ship" approach for preparing the ratiometric fluorescent probe has been developed by encapsulating the red-colored fluorescence CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and blue-colored fluorescence graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g-CNQDs) into the zeolitic imidazolate metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-8) in one step. At a single excitation of 360 nm, the obtained probe ZIF-8@g-CNQD/CdTe shows the dual-emission peaked at 450 and 633 nm, respectively. The red emission of CdTe QDs is selectively quenched by the Hg2+, whereas the blue fluorescence of g-CNQDs as an internal reference is insensitive, resulting in an apparent color transformation from pink to blue for special recognition of Hg2+. By this approach, the relative fluorescence intensity ratio (F633/F450) decreased linearly with increasing Hg2+ concentration in the 0.2-3.5 μM range with a low limit of detection (LOD) of ~ 46 nM. Therefore, we demonstrate that this "bottle-around-ship" process provides a new strategy for the construction of ratiometric fluorescent Hg2+ probes with good simplicity, high efficiency, and excellent stabilities. Moreover, the obtained Hg2+ fluorescent probe shows good results in the detection of actual samples.

Abstract
For the first time, Hg2+ and methylmercury speciation analysis was accomplished by in-line SPE-LC-AFS. After modification with 0.1 mL of 0.001% (m:v) sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, a C18 microcolumn retained Hg2+ and MetHg in rice extract within 3 min; the captured Hg species were separated within 12 min in 0.25% (v:v) 2-mercaptoethanol + 60 mmol L-1 (m:v) ammonium acetate + 4% (v:v) acetonitrile. Under optimized conditions, the detection limits were 0.3 ng L-1 for Hg2+ and 0.2 ng L-1 for MetHg, respectively, with 10 mL injection vs. 0.1 mL eluent; in-line SPE achieved ∼ 100x enrichment. Method precision and accuracy were satisfactory at < 2% relative standard deviations (RSDs) for 20 ng L-1 of Hg2+ and MetHg and 95-102% recoveries for real rice samples. In-line SPE obviated human involvement and avoided invalid transportation between interfaces, rendering this SPE-LC-AFS method easy, compact, robust, yet sensitive in mercury speciation analysis to uphold food safety.

Abstract
Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a strong toxic heavy ion that causes severe damages to the environment and readily accumulates in the food chain. However, it remains a major challenge to realize a sensitive and precise recognition of Hg2+ with a trace concentration for early identifying the pollution source. In this work, a novel electrochemical aptasensor was designed to achieve an ultrasensitive and quantitative detection of trace Hg2+, relying on an urchin-like architecture of Cu@carbon nanoneedles (Cu@CNNs) as the electroactive probe. This specific nanostructure was in-situ constructed through a controllable pyrolysis process, serving as a signal magnifier and DNA loading platform owing to its outstanding electrocatalysis and large specific surface areas. Meanwhile, an exonuclease III-assisted cycling amplification strategy was designed to efficiently amplify the signal strength of trace Hg2+via the consecutive release of report probes in nicking reaction. This as-prepared Hg2+ aptasensor exhibited an ultralow detection limit of 3.7 fM (7 × 10-6 ppm) and a wide linear range from 10 fM to 10 μM, together with the satisfactory stability and reusability for assay in real water samples. It is highly expected that this Cu@CNNs based aptasensor will have tremendous potentials in the early warning and efficient pollution monitoring of heavy metal ions.

Abstract
The rapid development of industrial technologies continuously increases the heavy metal pollution of water resources. Recently, portable electrochemical analysis-based devices for detecting heavy metal ions have attracted much attention due to their excellent performance and low fabrication costs. However, it has proven difficult to accommodate complex testing needs in a cost-effective manner. To address these limitations, we propose a new system for the in situ detection of heavy metals in wastewater using an organic light-emitting diode-based panel to display data in real time and Bluetooth to transmit data to a smartphone for rapid analysis. The fabricated device integrates an in situ signal analysis circuit, a Bluetooth chip, a photocured 3D-printed shell, and an electrode sleeve interface. In addition, a fully screen-printed functional electrode plate containing chitosan/PANi-Bi nanoparticle@graphene oxide multi-walled carbon nanotubes is utilized for the rapid detection of heavy metal ions. This device can perform wireless data transmission and analysis and in situ signal acquisition and processing. The sensor exhibits a high sensitivity (Hg2+: 88.34 μA ppm-1 cm-2; Cu2+: 0.956 μA ppm-1 cm-2), low limit of detection (Hg2+: 10 ppb, Cu2+: 0.998 ppm) and high selectivity during the detection of copper and mercury ions in tap water under non-laboratory conditions, and the results of real-time tests reveal that parameters measured in the field and laboratory environments are identical. Hence, this small, portable, electrochemical sensor with a screen-printed electrode can be effectively used for the real-time detection of copper and mercury ions in complex water environments.

Simultaneous enrichment of inorganic and organic species of lead and mercury in pg L -1 levels by solid phase extraction online combined with high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Anal Chim Acta 2021; 1157:338388. [PMID: 33832592 DOI: 10.1016/j.aca.2021.338388] [Citation(s) in RCA: 15] [Impact Index Per Article: 5.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/12/2021] [Revised: 02/24/2021] [Accepted: 03/10/2021] [Indexed: 12/28/2022]
Abstract
Quantification of ultra-trace inorganic and organic species of lead and mercury in unpolluted environmental water is crucial to estimate the mobility, toxicity and bioavailability and interactions. Simultaneous pre-concentration of Pb and Hg species in pg L-1 levels followed by multi-elemental speciation analysis makes great sense to a large set of unstable samples because of time advantages. Herein simultaneous enrichment and speciation analysis of ultra-trace lead and mercury in water was developed by online solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SPE-HPLC-ICP-MS) for this aim. Pb(II), trimethyl lead (TML), triethyl lead (TEL), Hg(II), methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) were baseline separated in 11 min under gradient elution using 5 mM l-cysteine (Cys) at pH 2.5 in the 0-1 and 4-15 min and 5 mM Cys + 0.5 mM tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide solution at pH 2.5 in the 1-4 min. Lead and mercury species in 10 mL intact water samples were adsorbed on a 1 cm C18 enrichment column pre-conditioned with 10 mL of 1 mM 2-mercaptoethanol at 10 mL min-1, and then directly desorbed by the mobile phases. High enrichment factors (459 for Pb(II), 1248 for TML, 1627 for TEL, 2485 for Hg(II), 1984 for MeHg and 1866 for EtHg) were obtained with good relative standard deviations (<5%), leading to low LODs (0.001-0.011 ng L-1) and LOQs (0.004-0.036 ng L-1). Good accuracy of this method was validated by two certified reference materials of total lead in water (GBW08601) and total mercury in water (GBW08603) along with spiked recoveries (89-93%). The method was applied to analyze trace lead and mercury species in river, lake, tap and rain water, and purified and mineral water. Inorganic lead of 13-68 ng L-1 and inorganic mercury of 21-49 ng L-1 were measured in the nine water samples whereas TML, TEL and MeHg were not detected with 2-5 ng L-1 EtHg presented only in one river water and tap water.

Abstract
A novel aptamer-modified Copper @ Gold nanoclusters (apt-Cu@Au NCs) based ratiometric fluorescent probe was developed for mercury ions (Hg2+) determination in Porphyra. The apt-Cu@Au NCs were well dispersed in solution without Hg2+ but combined together for the formation of thymidine-Hg-thymidine structure with the addition of Hg2+, which further caused the changes in their fluorescence intensities owing to fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Along with that, the changes in fluorescent colors are visible to the naked eye. Accordingly, Hg2+ were determined ranging from 0.1 to 9.0 μM by fluorescence analysis with the detection limit of 4.92 nM. Moreover, a homemade device utilizing smartphone and microfluidic chip was designed for colorimetric determination of Hg2+ ranging from 0.5 to 7.0 μM with good portability and usefulness. The proposed methods were used for Hg2+ detection in Porphyra with the recoveries of 101.83-114.00%, suggesting the considerable potential for evaluating Hg2+ levels in aquatic products.

Abstract
The highly selective and sensitive fluorometric method has been developed for trace level determination of Hg(II) is based on photo-induced electron transfer between rhodamine-6G dye and metal complex. Quenching in fluorescence intensity by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) is due to interaction between metal ion complex and dye. The fluorescence emitted was measured at 510 and 550 nm, for excitation and emission wavelengths respectively. Possible interferences present in water samples, which could affect the analytical response are studied and determined. The calibration graph was dynamically linear from 0.002 to 0.05 mgL-1 of Hg(II) with limit of detection 7 × 10-4 mgL-1 and limit of quantitation 1.9 × 10-3 mgL-1. The Stern-Volmer constant (KSV) calculated for the quenching of R-6G with Hg (II) was 8.47 Lmg-1 s-1 at optimized reaction conditions. The proposed FRET based fluorometric method was applied successfully in different industrial wastewater samples with satisfactory outcome.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) is known as a poisonous heavy metal which stimulates a wide range of adverse effects on the human health. Therefore, development of some feasible, practical and highly sensitive platforms would be desirable in determination of Hg2+ level as low as nmol L-1 or pmol L-1. Different approaches such as ICP-MS, AAS/AES, and nanomaterial-based nanobiosensors have been manipulated for determination of Hg2+ level. However, these approaches suffer from expensive instruments and complicated sample preparation. Recently, nanozymes have been assembled to address some disadvantages of conventional methods in the detection of Hg2+. Along with the outstanding progress in nanotechnology and computational approaches, pronounced improvement has been attained in the field of nanozymes, recently. To accentuate these progresses, this review presents an overview on the different reports of Hg2+-induced toxicity on the different tissues followed by various conventional approaches validated for the determination of Hg2+ level. Afterwards, different types of nanozymes like AuNPs, PtNPs for quantitative detection of Hg2+ were surveyed. Finally, the current challenges and the future directions were explored to alleviate the limitation of nanozyme-based platforms with potential engineering in detection of heavy metals, namely Hg2+. The current overview can provide outstanding information to develop nano-based platforms for improvement of LOD and LOQ of analytical methods in sensitive detection of Hg2+ and other heavy metals.

Abstract
Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks, namely Zr-based MOF, was employed as adsorbent material in the miniaturized solid phase extraction of organic mercury compounds in food prior to capillary electrophoresis-diode array detector analysis. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by different spectroscopic techniques. Parameters influencing the extraction and complexation of methylmercury chloride, ethylmercury chloride and phenylmercury chloride such as type of eluent solvent, type and amount of adsorbent were investigated. In addition, linear ranges contained 2.00-300.00 ng mL-1 for MeHg+, 5.00-500.00 ng mL-1 for EtHg+ and PhHg+, and the established method presented good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.998). Under the optimized experimental conditions, the ranges of detection limit and quantitation limit were 0.022-0.067 ng mL-1 and 0.073-0.220 ng mL-1, respectively. The relative standard deviations of intra- and inter-day analysis were less than 3.2 and 3.1%, respectively. Trueness of the present method was successfully accomplished by means of the recovery assays (81.4-98.5%) in the blank samples with two concentration levels. The repeatability %RSD of the method was lower than 2.7%. Overall, the developed approach proved to have the latent capability to be utilized in routine analysis of organic mercury compounds in fish and Dendrobium officinale.

Abstract
As one of the most toxic heavy metal elements, mercury ion (Hg2+ ) and its methylated product, methylmercury (MeHg) can pose a threat to human health and the environment. Herein, a novel Raman biosensor with cascade sensitivity is developed for Hg2+ detection through Au@gap@AuAg nanorod side-by-side assemblies. Due to the strong electromagnetic coupling from the assemblies and core-shell structure, the Raman sensor possesses high sensitivity with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.001 ng mL-1 , which is about one order lower than traditional atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS) methods. Moreover, the fabricated biosensor is used to measure residual mercury levels in tissues and eggs of hens fed high-mercury diets, and the results show total mercury in collected egg yolks is 20 times higher than whites. Furthermore, the form of mercury in the eggs is also analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with AFS, and, unexpectedly, the methylated product MeHg tends to only be found in egg whites. These interesting differences may indicate a new research direction for the toxicity of mercury in living organisms, and the developed ultrasensitive Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) method could pave a broad way for the application of biosensors in Hg detection.

Abstract
In order to obtain a well understanding of the toxicity and ecological effects of trace elements in the environment, it is necessary to determine not only the total amount, but also their existing species. Speciation analysis has become increasingly important in making risk assessments of toxic elements since the toxicity and bioavailability strongly depend on their chemical forms. Effective separation of different species in combination with highly sensitive detectors to quantify these particular species is indispensable to meet this requirement. In this paper, we present the recent progresses on the speciation analysis of trace arsenic, mercury, selenium and antimony in environmental and biological samples with an emphasis on the separation and detection techniques, especially the recent applications of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenated to atomic spectrometry or mass spectrometry.
