Abstract
Alzheimer disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease with an intricate pathophysiological mechanism. Oxidative stress has been shown in several investigations as a significant factor in AD progression. For instance, studies have confirmed that oxidative stress inhibition may considerably improve AD symptoms, with potent antioxidants being touted as a possible interventional strategy in the search for AD treatment. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) acts as a natural catechin that has antioxidant effect. It activates the kelch-like epichlorohydrin-associated proteins (Keap1)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway to inhibit oxidative stress. The Keap1/Nrf2 signal pathway is not only an upstream signaling target for a variety of antioxidant enzymes, but also minimizes high levels of reactive oxygen species. This report analyzes the antioxidant effect of EGCG in AD, elaborates its specific mechanism of action, and provides a theoretical basis for its clinical application in AD.

Abstract
Poppy is an important edible plant containing bioactive components. This study aimed to produce good-tasting poppy sherbet by determining the content using a response surface methodology (RSM). At the same time, bioactive components, phenolic compounds, and color properties were investigated in optimum poppy sherbet during storage; 0.26 g of dried corn poppy flowers, 0.15 g of citric acid, and 4.29 g of sucrose values were the most promising, achieving high scores for color, smell, taste, and general acceptance from sensory properties (sensory score of 8.55 for color; 7.19 for smell; 8.38 for taste; 7.98 for general acceptability). A total of nine polyphenols were detected in the optimum poppy sherbet sample; gallic acid was the most common. There was no statistically significant difference between the samples stored on the 0th and 30th days regarding gallic acid content (23.886 ± 0.164 μg/mL, 23.403 ± 0.343 μg/mL) and protocatechuic acid (1.146 ± 0.048 μg/mL, 1.047 ± 0.038 μg/mL). Total flavonoid contents (TFC), total phenolic contents (TPC), CUPRAC (cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity), DPPH (e free radical diphenylpicrylhydrazyl), total monomeric anthocyanin (TAC), and color values were found to decrease as the storage period increased. It was considered that a highly palatable and rich bioactive component product could be obtained.

Abstract
Fruit bars are prepared by combining different ingredients which are wholesome and nutrient rich. The current study was designed to develop roselle-fig (different proportions) fruit bars and further investigate their physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant potential. Moreover, the prepared fruit bars were scrutinized for microbial and sensory characteristics to assess the appropriateness of ingredients during storage (up to 90 days). It was observed that there was gradual increase in moisture content with the passage of time, while ash, fat, fiber, and protein contents did not change significantly during storage. The pH and total soluble solid contents of these fruit bars during storage were 3.54-4.07 and 1.71-1.86 Brix, respectively. According to the mean values for sensory evaluation, T 2 was preferred over other treatments. The bars received an acceptable sensory evaluation, demonstrating that they were suitable for 90 days of storage. Phytochemical quantities significantly increased in subsequent treatments, but decreased during storage in all the treatments. Similar trend was observed regarding total antioxidant and DPPH radical scavenging activities. The mineral contents increased significantly among the treatments. The microbial analysis of fruit bars exposed that the fruit were microbiologically safe. Hence, on the basis of the results obtained in this study, it may be concluded that the developed roselle-fig fruit bar would be acceptable and nutritious regarding physicochemical characteristics, microbiological quality, and antioxidant potential.

Abstract
Hibiscus sabdariffa L. is a worldwide component for tea and beverages, being a natural source of anthocyanins, which are associated with cardiovascular activities. To investigate this relationship, we explored different methods of aqueous extraction on the anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity of H. sabdariffa L. calyx extract (HSCE). Pharmacological effects via platelet aggregation, calcium mobilization, cyclic nucleotide levels, vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein Ser157 and Ser239, and on the vasomotor response of aortic rings isolated from mice are studied herewith. We found that the application of ultrasonic turbolization, 20 min, combined with acidified water was significantly more effective in the extraction process, providing extracts with the highest levels of anthocyanins (8.73 and 9.63 mg/100 g) and higher antioxidant activity (6.66 and 6.78 μM trolox/g of sample). HSCE significantly inhibited (100-1000 μg/mL) arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation, reduced calcium mobilization, and increased cAMP and cGMP levels with VASPSer157 and VASPSer239 phosphorylation. Vasorelaxation reduction was confirmed by the aortic rings and endothelium assays treated with nitric oxide synthase inhibitors, soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) oxidizing agent, or Ca2+-activated K+ channel inhibitor. The increasing of cGMP levels could be understood considering the sGC stimulation by HSCE compounds in the specific stimulus domain, which allows an understanding of the observed antiplatelet and vasorelaxant properties of H. sabdariffa L. calyx extract.

Abstract
Identification of plant species is a crucial process in natural products. Ocimum, often referred to as the queen of herbs, is one of the most versatile and globally used medicinal herbs for various health benefits due to it having a wide variety of pharmacological activities. Despite there being significant global demand for this medicinal herb, rapid and comprehensive metabolomic fingerprinting approaches for species- and variety-specific classification are limited. In this study, metabolomic fingerprinting of five Ocimum species (Ocimum basilicum L., Ocimum sanctum L., Ocimum africanum Lour., Ocimum kilimandscharicum Gurke., and Hybrid Tulsi) and their varieties was performed using LC-MS, GC-MS, and the rapid fingerprinting approach FT-NIR combined with chemometrics. The aim was to distinguish the species- and variety-specific variation with a view toward developing a quality assessment of Ocimum species. Discrimination of species and varieties was achieved using principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares discriminate analysis (PLS-DA), data-driven soft independent modelling of class analogy (DD-SIMCA), random forest, and K-nearest neighbours with specificity of 98% and sensitivity of 99%. Phenolics and flavonoids were found to be major contributing markers for species-specific variation. The present study established comprehensive metabolomic fingerprinting consisting of rapid screening and confirmatory approaches as a highly efficient means to identify the species and variety of Ocimum, being able to be applied for the quality assessment of other natural medicinal herbs.

Abstract
Ocimum basilicum L. (O. basilicum) and its constituents show anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant effects. The plant has been mainly utilized in traditional medicine for the treatment of respiratory disorders. In the present article, effects of O. basilicum and its main constituents on respiratory disorders, assessed by experimental and clinical studies, were reviewed. Relevant studies were searched in PubMed, Science Direct, Medline, and Embase databases using relevant keywords including “Ocimum basilicum,” “basilicums,” “linalool,” “respiratory disease,” “asthma,” “obstructive pulmonary disease,” “bronchodilatory,” “bronchitis,” “lung cancer,” and “pulmonary fibrosis,” and other related keywords.The reviewed articles showed both relieving and preventing effects of the plant and its ingredients on obstructive pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and other respiratory disorders such as bronchitis, aspergillosis tuberculosis, and lung cancer. The results of the reviewed articles suggest the therapeutic potential of O. basilicum and its constituent, linalool, on respiratory disorders.
