Abstract
Introduction Avian eggshell membrane (ESM) is a complex extracellular matrix comprising collagens, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and hyaluronic acid. We have previously demonstrated that ESM possesses anti-inflammatory properties in vitro and regulates wound healing processes in vivo. The present study aimed to investigate if oral intake of micronized ESM could attenuate skeletal muscle aging associated with beneficial alterations in gut microbiota profile and reduced inflammation. Methods Elderly male C57BL/6 mice were fed an AIN93G diet supplemented with 0, 0.1, 1, or 8% ESM. Young mice were used as reference. The digestibility of ESM was investigated using the static in vitro digestion model INFOGEST for older people and adults, and the gut microbiota profile was analyzed in mice. In addition, we performed a small-scale pre-clinical human study with healthy home-dwelling elderly (>70 years) who received capsules with a placebo or 500 mg ESM every day for 4 weeks and studied the effect on circulating inflammatory markers. Results and discussion Intake of ESM in elderly mice impacted and attenuated several well-known hallmarks of aging, such as a reduction in the number of skeletal muscle fibers, the appearance of centronucleated fibers, a decrease in type IIa/IIx fiber type proportion, reduced gene expression of satellite cell markers Sdc3 and Pax7 and increased gene expression of the muscle atrophy marker Fbxo32. Similarly, a transition toward the phenotypic characteristics of young mice was observed for several proteins involved in cellular processes and metabolism. The digestibility of ESM was poor, especially for the elderly condition. Furthermore, our experiments showed that mice fed with 8% ESM had increased gut microbiota diversity and altered microbiota composition compared with the other groups. ESM in the diet also lowered the expression of the inflammation marker TNFA in mice and in vitro in THP-1 macrophages. In the human study, intake of ESM capsules significantly reduced the inflammatory marker CRP. Altogether, our results suggest that ESM, a natural extracellular biomaterial, may be attractive as a nutraceutical candidate with a possible effect on skeletal muscle aging possibly through its immunomodulating effect or gut microbiota.

Abstract
There is an urgent need for wearable sensors that continuously monitor human physiological conditions in real time. Herein, an ESM-PDA@rGO-based flexible wearable temperature sensor was successfully constructed by integrating an eggshell membrane (ESM) with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through dopamine (DA) polymerization. Depending on the "bridge effect" of diversified polydopamine (PDA) chains, on the one hand, a staggered arrangement of PDA-rGO frameworks and a lot of conductive pathways were produced and acted as an active layer. On the other hand, PDA-rGO frameworks were linked with ESM by PDA chains as a flexible sensing nanofilm. As a result, these mechanical merits of the ESM-PDA@rGO exhibited a 1.8-fold increase in Young' s modulus and 1.4-fold increase in tensile strength. Thereby, the conformability and performance of the temperature sensor were greatly enhanced, showing excellent sensitivity (-2.23%/°C), good linearity (R2 = 0.979), as well as stability. Especially, the flexible sensing nanofilm is evolved from the staggered arrangement of PDA-rGO frameworks, which endows it with rapid response (only 4-8 s), high resolution (0.1 °C), as well as excellent long-term durability (10 weeks). More importantly, the temperature sensor demonstrates insensitivity to bending deformation, ensuring reliable wearing stability. The sensor allows for online, real-time monitoring of human body temperature, encompassing both core (forehead, temple, cochlea, and exhale gas) and shell (palm and back of the hand, fingertip, and instep) temperatures. Particularly, it can accurately assess minor changes in peripheral body temperature before and after exercise, and it is capable of mapping daily patterns of body temperatures. The developed temperature sensor will provide us new materials design concepts and holds considerable promise in the fields of e-skin, disease surveillance, prediction, and diagnose.

Abstract
The physicochemical features of the avian eggshell membrane play an essential role in the process of calcium carbonate deposition during shell mineralization, giving rise to a porous mineralized tissue with remarkable mechanical properties and biological functions. The membrane could be useful by itself or as a bi-dimensional scaffold to build future bone-regenerative materials. This review focuses on the biological, physical, and mechanical properties of the eggshell membrane that could be useful for that purpose. Due to its low cost and wide availability as a waste byproduct of the egg processing industry, repurposing the eggshell membrane for bone bio-material manufacturing fulfills the principles of a circular economy. In addition, eggshell membrane particles have has the potential to be used as bio-ink for 3D printing of tailored implantable scaffolds. Herein, a literature review was conducted to ascertain the degree to which the properties of the eggshell membrane satisfy the requirements for the development of bone scaffolds. In principle, it is biocompatible and non-cytotoxic, and induces proliferation and differentiation of different cell types. Moreover, when implanted in animal models, it elicits a mild inflammatory response and displays characteristics of stability and biodegradability. Furthermore, the eggshell membrane possesses a mechanical viscoelastic behavior comparable to other collagen-based systems. Overall, the biological, physical, and mechanical features of the eggshell membrane, which can be further tuned and improved, make this natural polymer suitable as a basic component for developing new bone graft materials.

Abstract
The demerits of the carbonized eggshell membrane (EM), such as high cost, high brittleness, immutable shape and size, greatly limit its application in demanding supercapacitors as free-standing electrode. Herein, the reconstituted EM (REM) with good flexibility and excellent size-customizability is developed, which is due to their fibrous structure and abundant surface polar groups. Ti3C2 nanosheet (a typical MXene) with ultra-high electrical conductivity and good electrochemical activity is then coated on REM surface, and undergoes a low-temperature carbonization (350 °C) to prepare CREM/T. Multi-functions of Ti3C2 are exhibited: (1) constructing a conductive network on REM surface by randomly stacking to yield a high electrical conductivity of 78.1 S cm-1, (2) being as a protective mold to remain the inherent flexibility and porosity of REM during carbonization, (3) creating nanopores by inducing self-activation, and (4) yielding a large capacitance of 1729 mF cm-2 at 0.5 mA cm-2 and a high rate capability of 82 % after increasing the current density by 50 folds. Furthermore, an all-EM-based supercapacitor is fabricated with REM as the separator and CREM/T as the electrode. It delivers a high energy density of 16.1 μW h cm-2 at 1301 μW cm-2, and shows stable capacitive behaviors during bending.

Abstract
Natural antioxidants derived from agricultural by-products have great promise and ecological advantages in the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases. The eggshell membrane (ESM) from hatched eggs, i.e., the hatched ESM, is a globally abundant agricultural byproduct, and its high-value utilization has been rarely studied compared to the well-studied ESM from fresh eggs. In this research, we systematically characterized the hatched ESM as a novel source of antioxidant hydrolysates and explored their potential role in H2O2-induced human chondrocytes. The results showed that the hatched ESM is a protein-rich fibrous mesh material with a significantly different structure and composition from those of fresh ESM. Enzymatic hydrolysis of hatched ESM can produce antioxidant hydrolysates rich in low molecular weight (MW) peptides, which mainly derived from the Lysyl oxidase homolog by Nano-LC-MS/MS analysis. The peptide fraction with MW < 3 kDa (HEMH-I) exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging, Fe2+-chelating, and Fe3+-reducing abilities. In H2O2-induced human SW1353 chondrocytes, HEMH-I treatment significantly increased the cell viability and ameliorated oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cartilage matrix degradation by reducing the level of ROS, matrix metalloprotease 3 (MMP3), MMP13, and IL-6, and by promoting the expression of SOD and type II collagen, potentially through activating the cellular Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. This study provides a theoretical basis for the value-added application of hatched ESM waste to produce antioxidant hydrolysates and indicates their potential as functional food and pharmaceuticals.
