Pretreatment with selenium prevented the accumulation of hexavalent chromium in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and reduced the potential health risk of fish consumption

A screening for optimal selenium enrichment additives for selenium-enriched fish production: Application of a HPLC-ICP-MS method

The production of selenium-enriched fish contributes to alleviating selenium deficiency for humans. In this study, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) comparable in bioavailability to selenomethionine (SeMet), increased SeMet content in O. macrolepis (Onychostoma macrolepis) muscle. Additionally, dietary SeNPs significantly enhanced selenocysteine (SeCys2) and methylselenocysteine (MeSeCys) levels in O. macrolepis muscle. The effect of SeNPs on selenium speciation in grass carp muscle was consistent with O. macrolepis results. SeCys2 and MeSeCys showed antioxidant capacity in HEK293T cells, indicating enhanced health benefits of Se-enriched fish produced using SeNPs. Furthermore, the addition of 0.3 mg/kg SeNPs significantly improved the flesh quality of O. macrolepis by reducing the content of crude fat and heavy metals, as well as increasing the levels of crude protein, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the ratio of n-3/n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Therefore, selenium-enriched fish produced from SeNPs is a good source for improving human dietary selenium intake.

A study on the effectiveness of sodium selenite in treating cadmium and perfluoro octane sulfonic (PFOS) poisoned zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Perfluoro octane sulfonate (PFOS) and cadmium (Cd) are toxic elements in the environment. As a micronutrient trace element, selenium (Se) can mitigate the adverse effects induced by PFOS and Cd. However, few studies have examined the correlation between Se, PFOS and Cd in fish. The present study focused on the antagonistic effects of Se on PFOS+Cd-induced accumulation in the liver of zebrafish. The fish was exposed to PFOS (0.08mg/L), Cd (1mg/L), PFOS+ Cd (0.08 mg/L PFOS+1 mg/L Cd), L-Se (0.07mg/L Sodium selenite +0.08mg/L PFOS+1mg/L Cd), M-Se (0.35mg/L Sodium selenite + 0.08mg/L PFOS+ 1 mg/L Cd), H-Se (1.75 mg/L Sodium selenite + 0.08 mg/L PFOS+ 1mg/L Cd) for 14d. The addition of selenium to fish exposed to PFOS and Cd has been found to have significant positive effects. Specifically, selenium treatments can alleviate the adverse effects of PFOS and Cd on fish growth, with a 23.10% improvement observed with the addition of T6 compared to T4. In addition, selenium can alleviate the negative effects of PFOS and Cd on antioxidant enzymes in zebrafish liver, thus reducing the liver toxicity caused by PFOS and Cd. Overall, the supplementation of selenium can reduce the health risks to fish and mitigate the injuries caused by PFOS and Cd in zebrafish.

Selenium toxicity and bioaccumulation in selenium-enriched fly (Chrysomya megacephala) maggots

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for human health, and as a potential animal feed, the Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) fly is rich in protein and fat. By using different concentrations of sodium selenite (0, 30, 50, 70 mg kg^-1), the possibility of biological Se enrichment in C. megacephala (Fabricius) maggots (CMMs) was investigated. The accumulation, Se speciation, enzymatic activity, and concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and cadmium (Cd) in the maggots were also determined. Transcriptomics was also used to investigate the mechanism of the Se response to CMM genes. The results showed that the CMMs had a survival rate of > 80% at Se exposure concentrations ranging from 0 to 100 mg kg^-1. The optimal concentration of sodium selenite for CMM growth was 50 mg kg^-1, and the weight, protein content, and total Se accumulation of the larvae (10.8 g, 53.5%, and 72.6 ± 3.36 mg kg^-1 (DW), respectively) were considerably higher than the control and other exposure doses (p < 0.05). In addition, Se improved the ability of maggots to absorb Cu and Zn, decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipid peroxidation, but improved the antioxidant activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). Furthermore, Se negatively affected the absorption of Cd and Cr. According to the transcriptomic findings, Se supplementation can boost protein synthesis and control both antioxidant and non-antioxidant enzyme activity in CMMs. Therefore, our findings showed that Se-enriched CMMs may counteract the toxicity of Cd and Cr, and Se is an effective supplement for improving the consumption safety of cultured animals fed containing CMMs.

Nephroprotective Efficacy of Selenium and Zinc Against Potassium Dichromate-Induced Renal Toxicity in Pregnant Wistar Albino Rats

Hexavalent chromium (CrVI) compounds are potent toxicants commonly used in numerous industries. Thus, potential toxic effects and health hazards are of high relevance. Selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) are known for their antioxidant and chemoprotective properties. However, little is known about their protective effects against CrVI-induced renal damage during pregnancy. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the protective efficacy of these two essential elements against potassium dichromate-induced nephrotoxicity in pregnant Wistar Albino rats. Female rats were divided into control and four treated groups of six each receiving subcutaneously on the 3rd day of pregnancy, K₂Cr₂O₇ (10 mg/kg, s.c. single dose) alone, or in association with Se (0.3 mg/kg, s.c. single dose), ZnCl₂ (20 mg/kg, s.c. single dose) or both of them simultaneously. The nephrotoxic effects were monitored by the evaluation of plasma renal parameters, oxidative stress biomarkers, DNA damage, and renal Cr content. The obtained results showed that K₂Cr₂O₇ disturbed renal biochemical markers, induced oxidative stress and DNA fragmentation in kidney tissues, and altered renal histoarchitecture. The co-administration of Se and/or ZnCl₂ has exhibited pronounced chelative, antioxidant, and genoprotective effects against K₂Cr₂O₇-induced renal damage and attenuated partially the histopathological alterations. These results suggest that Se and Zn can be used as efficient nephroprotective agents against K₂Cr₂O₇-induced toxicity in pregnant Wistar Albino rats.

Microscopic analysis of plant-mediated silver nanoparticle toxicity in rainbow trout fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Over the years, nanoscience and the application of nanomaterials have gained the attention of researchers due to their enormous application history. Especially, the application of AgNPs providing innovative solutions to a wide range of environmental issues, for instance, wastewater treatment, bioremediations, and environmental sensing. Besides all these, the environmental application of silver nanomaterials causes severe problems in the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. For their concern, the present study was conducted to expose rainbow trout fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to different concentrations of silver nanoparticles for 25 days. In the current study, mortality (LC₅₀ ), accumulation, and histopathological changes were analyzed. The results have revealed that the silver nanoparticles were mostly accumulated in the liver followed by the intestine, gill, and muscles. The microscopic analysis has shown that the accumulation of silver nanoparticles led to histological changes in gill and intestinal tissues. Necrosis, degeneration, mucus substance on the surface of gill lamella, cell lysis, and gill lamella atrophy were found at (0.04 mg/L) and (0.06 mg/L). The findings in the current study showed less toxicity in the sense of mortality and accumulation of AgNPs. Therefore, further systematic studies are needed to access the influence of silver nanoparticles on the aquatic ecosystem.
