Abstract
Responsiveness of liposomes to external stimuli, such as light, should allow a precise spatial and temporal control of release of therapeutic agents or ion transmembrane transport. Here, some aryl-azo derivatives of thymol are synthesized and embedded into liposomes from 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine to obtain light-sensitive membranes whose photo-responsiveness, release behaviour, and permeability towards Cl- ions are investigated. The hybrid systems are in-depth characterized by dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. In liposomal bilayer the selected guests undergo reversible photoinduced isomerization upon irradiation with UV and visible light, alternately. Non-irradiated hybrid liposomes retain entrapped 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (CF), slowing its spontaneous leakage, whereas UV-irradiation promotes CF release, due to guest trans-to-cis isomerization. Photoisomerization also influences membrane permeability towards Cl- ions. Data processing, according to first-order kinetics, demonstrates that Cl- transmembrane transport is enhanced by switching the guest from trans to cis but restored by back-switching the guest from cis to trans upon illumination with blue light. Finally, the passage of Cl- ions across the bilayer can be fine-tuned by irradiation with light of longer λ and different light-exposure times. Fine-tuning the photo-induced structural response of the liposomal membrane upon isomerization is a promising step towards effective photo-dynamic therapy.

Abstract
Bacillus cereus spores pose a significant concern during food processing due to their high resistance to environmental stress. Ohmic heating (OH) is an emerging and alternative heating technology with potential for inactivating such spores. This study evaluated the inactivation effects and the biological property changes of Bacillus cereus spores during OH treatments. OH effectively inactivated spores in milk, orange juice, broth, rice soup, and buffer solution in less time than oil bath heating (OB). A decrease in NaCl content improved spore inactivation at the same temperature. Spores were more sensitive to acid at 80-85 °C with OH treatment. Furthermore, OH at 10 V/cm and 50 Hz could reduce the spore resistance and inhibit an increase in spore hydrophobicity and spore aggregation. Both heating methods resulted in significant dipicolinic acid (DPA) leakage and damage to the cortex and inner membranes of the spores. However, OH at 10 V/cm and 50 Hz had the lowest DPA leakage and inflicted the least damage to the inner membrane. The damage to the spore's inner membrane was considered the primary reason for inactivation by OB and OH treatments. Still, OH at 10 V/cm and 50 Hz might also block the germination or outgrowth of treated spores or cause damage to the spore core.

Abstract
A molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was facilely fabricated for the detection of thymol (THY). o-Phenylenediamine (oPD) was used as the functional monomer and electropolymerized on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by using THY as the templates. After the THY templates were removed with 50 % (v/v) ethanol, imprinted cavities complementary to the templates were formed within the poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) films. The resultant molecularly imprinted PoPD/GCE (MI-PoPD/GCE) was used for the detection of THY, and a wide linear range from 0.5 to 100 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.084 μM were obtained under the optimal conditions. The developed MI-PoPD/GCE also displays high selectivity, reproducibility and stability for THY detection. Finally, the content of THY in the real samples was accurately determined by the as-fabricated MI-PoPD/GCE, demonstrating its high practicability and reliability.

Abstract
Bacillus cereus causes food poisoning by producing toxins that cause diarrhea and vomiting and, in severe cases, endocarditis, meningitis, and other diseases. It also tends to form biofilms and spores that lead to contamination of the food production environment. Citral is a potent natural antibacterial agent, but its antibacterial activity against B. cereus has not been extensively studied. In this study, we first determined the minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum bactericidal concentrations, growth curves, killing effect in different media, membrane potential, intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP), reactive oxygen species levels, and morphology of vegetative cells, followed by germination rate, morphology, germination state of spores, and finally biofilm clearance effect. The results showed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum bactericidal concentrations of citral against bacteria ranged from 100 to 800 μg/mL. The lag phase of bacteria was effectively prolonged by citral, and the growth rate of bacteria was slowed down. Bacteria in Luria-Bertani broth were reduced to below the detection limit by citral at 800 μg/mL within 0.5 h. Bacteria in rice were reduced to 3 log CFU/g by citral at 4000 μg/mL within 0.5 h. After treatment with citral, intracellular ATP concentration was reduced, membrane potential was altered, intracellular reactive oxygen species concentration was increased, and normal cell morphology was altered. After treatment with citral at 400 μg/mL, spore germination rate was reduced to 16.71%, spore morphology was affected, and spore germination state was altered. It also had a good effect on biofilm removal. The present study showed that citral had good bacteriostatic activity against B. cereus vegetative cells and its spores and also had a good clearance effect on its biofilm. Citral has the potential to be used as a bacteriostatic substance for the control of B. cereus in food industry production.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to reveal the antibacterial activity and mechanism of Polygonatum sibiricum extract (PSE) against Bacillus cereus and further analyze the application of PSE in pasteurized milk (PM). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values and growth curve analysis were used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of PSE against B. cereus. The changes in contents of intracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), activities of β-galactosidase, adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP), cell membrane potential, protein and nucleic acid leakage, and cell morphology were used to reveal the antibacterial mechanism. The effects of PSE on viable count and sensory evaluation of PM during storage were analyzed. The results showed that the MIC and MBC values of PSE against B. cereus were 2 and 4 mg/mL, respectively. Growth curve analysis showed that PSE with a concentration of 2 MIC could completely inhibit the growth of B. cereus. After treatments with PSE, the levels of intracellular ATP and ROS, and activities of β-galactosidase, ATPase and AKP of B. cereus were significantly reduced (p < 0.05). Cell membrane was depolarized, amounts of protein and nucleic acid leakage were significantly increased (p < 0.05), and cell morphology was destroyed. Furthermore, PSE significantly reduced the viable count of B. cereus in PM and improved the sensory quality of PM during storage (p < 0.05). Together, our findings suggested that PSE had the desired effect as a natural preservative applied in PM.

Abstract
Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is an emergent zoonotic agent associated with multidrug resistance (MDR). This work aimed to describe the antibacterial activity of four essential oils (EOs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against 15 S. pseudintermedius strains isolated from pyoderma. The four EOs, namely Rosmarinus officinalis (RO), Juniperus communis (GI), Citrus sinensis (AR), and Abies alba (AB), and AgNPs were used alone and in combination to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). All strains were MDR and methicillin-resistant. Among the antibiotic cohort, only rifampicin, doxycycline, and amikacin were effective. EOs' chemical analysis revealed 124 compounds belonging to various chemical classes. Of them, 35 were found in AR, 75 in AB, 77 in GI, and 57 in RO. The monoterpenic fraction prevailed over the sesquiterpenic in all EOs. When EOs were tested alone, AB showed the lowest MIC followed by GI, AR, and RO (with values ranging from 1:128 to 1:2048). MBC increased in the following order: AB, AR, GI, and RO (with values ranging from 1:512 to 1:2048). MIC and MBC values for AgNPs were 10.74 mg/L ± 4.23 and 261.05 mg/L ± 172.74. In conclusion, EOs and AgNPs could limit the use of antibiotics or improve the efficacy of conventional therapies.

Abstract
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria pose a global health threat by causing persistent and recurrent microbial infections. To address this issue, antimicrobial nanoparticles (NPs) with low drug resistance but potent bactericidal effects have been developed. However, many of the developed NPs display poor biosafety and their synthesis often involves complex procedures and the antimicrobial modes of action are unclear. Herein, a simple strategy is reported for designing antimicrobial metal-phenolic network (am-MPN) NPs through the one-step assembly of a seeding agent (diethyldithiocarbamate), natural polyphenols, and metal ions (e.g., Cu2+ ) in aqueous solution. The Cu2+ -based am-MPN NPs display lower Cu2+ antimicrobial concentrations (by 10-1000 times) lower than most reported nanomaterials and negligible toxicity across various models, including, cells, blood, zebrafish, and mice. Multiple antimicrobial modes of the NPs have been identified, including bacterial wall disruption, reactive oxygen species production, and quinoprotein formation, with the latter being a distinct pathway identified for the antimicrobial activity of the polyphenol-based am-MPN NPs. The NPs exhibit excellent performance against multidrug-resistant bacteria (e.g., methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)), efficiently inhibit and destroy bacterial biofilms, and promote the healing of MRSA-infected skin wounds. This study provides insights on the antimicrobial properties of metal-phenolic materials and the rational design of antimicrobial metal-organic materials.

Abstract
This study aimed to prepare sodium alginate-linalool emulsion (SA-LE) to overcome the low solubility of linalool and explore its inhibitory activity against Shigella sonnei. The results indicated that linalool significantly reduced the interfacial tension between SA and oil phase (p < 0.05). Droplet sizes of fresh emulsions were uniform with sizes from 2.54 to 2.58 μm. The ζ-potential was between -23.94 and -25.03 mV, and the viscosity distribution was 973.62 to 981.03 mPa·s at pH 5-8 (near neutral pH) without significant difference. In addition, linalool could be effectively released from SA-LE in accordance with the Peppas-Sahlin model, mainly described by Fickian diffusion. In particular, SA-LE can inhibit S. sonnei with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 3 mL/L, which was lower than free linalool. The mechanism can be described as damaging the membrane structure and inhibiting respiratory metabolism accompanied by oxidative stress based on FESEM, SDH activity, ATP and ROS content. These results suggest that SA is an effective encapsulation strategy to enhance the stability of linalool and its inhibitory effect on S. sonnei at near neutral pH. Moreover, the prepared SA-LE has the potential to be developed as a natural antibacterial agent to address the growing food safety challenges.

Abstract
In this study, the preparation of covalent polyoxometalate organic frameworks (CPOFs) is introduced using the idea of polyoxometalate and covalent organic frameworks. Firstly, the prepared polyoxometalate was functionalized with an amine group (NH2-POM-NH2), and then the CPOFs were prepared by a solvothermal Schiff base reaction with NH2-POM-NH2 and 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (Tp) as monomers. After the incorporation of PtNPs and MWCNTs into the CPOFs material, the PtNPs-CPOFs-MWCNTs nanocomposites, which possess excellent catalytic activity and electrical conductivity, were formed and utilized as new electrode materials for the electrochemical thymol sensors. The obtained PtNPs-CPOFs-MWCNTs composite exhibits excellent activity toward thymol, which is attributable to its large special surface area, good conductivity and the synergistic catalysis of each component. Under optimal experimental conditions, the sensor presented a good electrochemical response to thymol. The sensor shows two good linear relationships between the current and thymol concentration in the range of 2-65 μM (R2 = 0.996) and 65-810 μM (R2 = 0.997), with the corresponding sensitivity of 72.7 μA mM-1 and 30.5 μA mM-1, respectively. Additionally, the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 0.2 μM (S/N = 3). At the same time, the prepared thymol electrochemical sensor revealed superior stability and selectivity. The constructed PtNPs-CPOFs-MWCNT electrochemical sensor is the first example of thymol detection.

Abstract
Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris has great influence on the quality of apple juice products. In this study, the antibacterial activity of five preservatives (ε-polylysine, propylparaben, monocaprin, octyl gallate and heptylparaben) against A. acidoterrestris and its underlying mechanism were investigated. Results showed that these five preservatives all exerted antibacterial activity through a multiple bactericidal mechanism, and monocaprin and octyl gallate had the highest antibacterial activity, with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 22.5 and 6.25 mg/L, respectively. Five preservatives all changed the permeability of the cell membrane and destroyed the complete cell morphology, with the leakages of the intracellular electrolytes. Moreover, the treatment of ε-polylysine, propylparaben and monocaprin increased the leakage of intracellular protein; propylparaben and octyl gallate reduced the levels of cellular adenosine triphosphate. Also, monocaprin and octyl gallate may stimulate bacteria to release a large amount of reactive oxygen species, so that certain oxidative damage can kill the bacteria. Furthermore, monocaprin and octyl gallate could effectively inactivate the contamination of A. acidoterrestris in apple juices, with the slightly decrease of soluble sugars and organic acids, without significant adverse effects on total sugars and titratable acids. This research highlights the great promise of using monocaprin and octyl gallate as the safe multi-functionalized food additives for food preservations.

Abstract
Okra has received extensive attention due to its high nutritional value and remarkable functional characteristics, but postharvest diseases have severely limited its application. It is important to further explore the methods and potential methods to control the postharvest diseases of okra. In this study, Colletotrichum fioriniae is the major pathogen that causes okra anthracnose, which can be isolated from naturally decaying okra. The pathogenicity of C. fioriniae against okra was preliminarily verified, and the related biological characteristics were explored. At the same time, an observational study was conducted to investigate the in vitro antifungal effect of thymol edible coating (TKL) on C. fioriniae. After culturing at 28 °C for 5 days, it was found that TKL showed an obvious growth inhibition effect on C. fioriniae. The concentration for 50% of the maximal effect was 95.10 mg/L, and the minimum inhibitory concentration was 1000 mg/L. In addition, it was found that thymol edible coating with a thymol concentration of 100 mg/L (TKL100) may cause different degrees of damage to the cell membrane, cell wall, and metabolism of C. fioriniae, thereby inhibiting the growth of hyphae and causing hyphal rupture. Refer to the results of the in vitro bacteriostatic experiment. Furthermore, the okra was sprayed with TKL100. It was found that the TKL100 coating could significantly inhibit the infection of C. fioriniae to okra, reduce the rate of brown spots and fold on the okra surface, and inhibit mycelium growth. In addition, the contents of total phenols and flavonoids of okra treated with TKL100 were higher than those of the control group. Meanwhile, the activities of phenylalaninammo-nialyase, cinnamic acid-4-hydroxylase, and 4-coumarate-CoA ligase in the lignin synthesis pathway were generally increased, especially after 6 days in a 28 °C incubator. The lignin content of TKL-W was the highest, reaching 65.62 ± 0.68 mg/g, which was 2.24 times of that of CK-W. Therefore, TKL may promote the synthesis of total phenols and flavonoids in okra, then stimulate the activity of key enzymes in the lignin synthesis pathway, and finally regulate the synthesis of lignin in okra. Thus, TKL could have a certain controlling effect on okra anthracnose.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effect and mechanism of cinnamaldehyde on Bacillus cereus spores in ready-to-eat beef. The colour difference and texture of the ready-to-eat beef supplemented with cinnamaldehyde did not differ greatly from the colour and texture of the blank beef. However, cinnamaldehyde has an effective antibacterial effect on the total number of bacterial colonies and B. cereus spores in ready-to-eat beef. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed that the cell membrane of B. cereus was disrupted by cinnamaldehyde, leading to leakage of intracellular components. Transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) indicated that the B. cereus spore resistance regulation system (sigB, sigW, rsbW, rsbV, yfkM and yflT) and phosphoenolpyruvate phosphotransferase system (PTS) (ptsH, ptsI and ptsG) respond positively to cinnamaldehyde in an adverse environment. Intracellular disorders due to damage to the cell membrane involve some transporters (copA, opuBA and opuD) and some oxidative stress systems (ywrO, scdA and katE) in the regulation of the body. However, downregulation of K+ transport channels (kdpD and kdpB), osmotic pressure regulation (opuE) and some oxidative stress (norR and srrA)-related genes may accelerate spore apoptosis. In addition, cinnamaldehyde also effectively inhibits the spore germination-related genes (smc, mreB and gerE). This study provides new insights into the molecular mechanism of the antibacterial effect of cinnamaldehyde on B. cereus spores in ready-to-eat beef.

Abstract
Thymoquinone (TQ) has been demonstrated to have anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic activities. Shigella flexneri is the main pathogen causing shigellosis in developing countries. In this study, the antibacterial activity of TQ against S. flexneri and its possible antibacterial mechanism were studied. In addition, the inhibitory effect of TQ on the formation of S. flexneri biofilm was also investigated. The results showed that both the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration of TQ against S. flexneri ATCC 12022 were 0.2 mg/mL. After treatment with TQ at 0.4 mg/mL in Luria-Bertani broth for 3 h, or treatment with 0.2 mg/mL TQ in phosphate-buffered saline for 60 min, the number of S. flexneri (initial number is 6.5 log colony-forming units/mL) dropped below the detection limit. TQ also displayed good antibacterial activity in contaminated lettuce juice. TQ caused an increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species level, a decrease in intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration, a change in the intracellular protein, damage to cell membrane integrity and changes in cell morphology. In addition, TQ showed the ability to inhibit the formation of S. flexneri biofilm; treatment resulted in a decrease in the amount of biofilm and extracellular polysaccharides, and the destruction of biofilm structure. These findings indicated that TQ had strong antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities and a potential to be applied in the fruit and vegetable processing industry or other food industries to control S. flexneri.

Abstract
Cinnamaldehyde (CA) has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and anti-cancer activities; Its antimicrobial and antibiofilm actions against Shigella flexneri, on the other hand, have not been investigated. Sh. flexneri is a gram-negative foodborne pathogen that can be widely found in nature and some industrial production environments. In this current research, our aim was to examine the influences of CA on planktonic bacteria and biofilm formation. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CA against Sh. flexneri strain was 100 μg/mL, while bacteria treated with CA showed a longer lag phase compared with the untreated control. CA effectively inactivated the Sh. flexneri in LB broth and fresh lettuce juice. CA treatment resulted in cell membrane permeability changes and dysfunction, as proven by cell membrane depolarization, decreased intracellular ATP concentration. In addition, CA was also discovered to increase the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells, and induce morphological changes in cells. Crystal violet staining showed that the biomass of biofilm was decreased significantly with CA in 24 h. Light microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) observations demonstrated decreased biofilm adhesion and destruction of biofilm architecture after treatment with CA. These findings indicated that CA acts as a natural bacteriostatic agent to control Sh. flexneri in food processing and production.

Abstract
Foodborne disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes is a major global food safety problem. A potential solution is the antimicrobial development of the highly bioactive natural product juglone, yet few studies exist on its antibacterial mechanism against L. monocytogenes. Thus, we aimed to elucidate the antibacterial mechanism of action of juglone against L. monocytogenes by determining the resultant cell morphology, membrane permeability, membrane integrity, and proteome changes. The minimum inhibitory concentration of juglone against L. monocytogenes was 50 μg/mL, and L. monocytogenes treated with juglone had longer lag phases compared to controls. Juglone induced L. monocytogenes cell dysfunction, leakage of potassium ions, and membrane potential hyperpolarization. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and field-emission-gun scanning electron microscope assays revealed clear membrane damage due to juglone treatment. Fourier transform infrared analyses showed that L. monocytogenes responded to juglone by some conformational and compositional changes in the molecular makeup of the cell membrane. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis showed that juglone either destroyed proteins or inhibited proteins synthesis in L. monocytogenes. Therefore, our findings established juglone as a natural antibacterial agent with potential to control foodborne L. monocytogenes infections.

Abstract
The prodrug approach has emerged as a promising solution to combat bacterial resistance and enhance treatment efficacy against bacterial infections. Here, we report an adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-activated prodrug system for on-demand treatment of bacterial infection. The prodrug system benefits from the synergistic action of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and polyacrylamide hydrogel microsphere, which simultaneously transports indole-3-acetic acid and horseradish peroxidase in a single carrier while preventing the premature activation of indole-3-acetic acid. The ATP-responsive characteristic of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 allows the prodrug system to be activated by the ATP secreted by bacteria to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), displaying exceptional broad-spectrum antimicrobial ability. Upon disruption of the bacterial membrane by ROS, the leaked intracellular ATP from dead bacteria can accelerate the activation of the prodrug system to further enhance antibacterial efficiency. In vivo experiments in a mouse model demonstrates the applicability of the prodrug system for wound disinfection with minimal side effects. Prodrugs are increasingly promising in tackling bacterial resistance and efficacy of treatment. Here, the authors encapsulated horseradish peroxidase and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 loaded with indole-3-acetic acid in polyacrylamide hydrogel microspheres for ATP-activated wound disinfection.

Abstract
In this study, thymol-loaded hydrophobically modified phytoglycogen/zein nanocomplexes with a particle size around 100 nm were developed for improving microbial safety of fresh produce. The antimicrobial activities, including the determination of minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration, growth kinetic curves, and inhibition zone of the nanocomplexes against foodborne pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, and Escherichia coli) were evaluated. The results showed that the antimicrobial activities of the nanocomplexes were significantly stronger than that of free thymol control (without encapsulation), and the antimicrobial efficacy remained unchanged after storage at 4 °C for 60 days. The morphological results from atomic force microscope revealed that small micellar blebs were formed at the surface of bacteria after treatment with nanocomplexes and the gradual disappearance of the cell boundary indicated the occurrence of cytolysis. The potential applications of this nanocomplex as disinfectant agent in wash water were evaluated on different types of fresh produce (lettuce, cantaloupe, and strawberries). Notably, the nanocomplexes also demonstrated efficacy in biofilm removal. Findings from this study clearly demonstrated that the thymol-loaded nanocomplexes hold promising potential for the disinfection of fresh produce to improve their microbial safety and quality.

Abstract
Fusarium spp. are ubiquitous fungi able to cause Fusarium head blight and Fusarium foot and root rot on wheat. Among relevant pathogenic species, Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium culmorum cause significant yield and quality loss and result in contamination of the grain with mycotoxins, mainly type B trichothecenes, which are a major health concern for humans and animals. Phenolic compounds of natural origin are being increasingly explored as fungicides on those pathogens. This review summarizes recent research activities related to the antifungal and anti-mycotoxigenic activity of natural phenolic compounds against Fusarium, including studies into the mechanisms of action of major exogenous phenolic inhibitors, their structure-activity interaction, and the combined effect of these compounds with other natural products or with conventional fungicides in mycotoxin modulation. The role of high-throughput analysis tools to decipher key signaling molecules able to modulate the production of mycotoxins and the development of sustainable formulations enhancing potential inhibitors’ efficacy are also discussed.

Abstract
In this study, thymoquinone (TQ), a natural active substance, was investigated for its antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus, and its inhibitory effect on B. cereus in reconstituted infant formula (RIF) was evaluated. In addition, the inhibitory effect of TQ on B. cereus spore germination was explored. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of TQ against eight B. cereus strains ranged from 4.0 to 8.0 μg/mL, whereas B. cereus treated with TQ displayed a longer lag phase than the untreated control. TQ exerted a good bactericidal effect on B. cereus in Luria–Bertani broth. In addition, TQ obviously reduced the intracellular ATP concentration of B. cereus, which caused depolarization of the cell membrane, increased the intracellular reactive oxygen species level, impaired the cell morphology, and destroyed proteins or inhibited proteins synthesis. This provides a mechanism for its bacteriostatic effect. TQ also inactivated B. cereus growth in RIF. Moreover, reverse transcription–quantitative polymerase chain reaction illustrated that TQ downregulated the transcription of genes related to hemolysin, non-hemolytic enterotoxin, enterotoxin, and cytotoxin K. Meanwhile, TQ displayed the ability to inhibit the germination of B. cereus spores. These findings indicate that TQ, as an effective natural antimicrobial preservative, has potential applications in controlling food contamination and foodborne diseases caused by B. cereus.

Abstract
The extensive usage of antibiotics and the rapid emergence of antimicrobial-resistant microbes (AMR) are becoming important global public health issues. Many solutions to these problems have been proposed, including developing alternative compounds with antimicrobial activities, managing existing antimicrobials, and rapidly detecting AMR pathogens. Among all of them, employing alternative compounds such as phytochemicals alone or in combination with other antibacterial agents appears to be both an effective and safe strategy for battling against these pathogens. The present review summarizes the scientific evidence on the biochemical, pharmacological, and clinical aspects of phytochemicals used to treat microbial pathogenesis. A wide range of commercial products are currently available on the market. Their well-documented clinical efficacy suggests that phytomedicines are valuable sources of new types of antimicrobial agents for future use. Innovative approaches and methodologies for identifying plant-derived products effective against AMR are also proposed in this review.
