Abstract
In this paper, the effects of extrusion, ultrasound on physicochemical properties of liposomes were studied, and the liposomes were prepared by ethanol injection combined with extrusion-ultrasound. In addition, the quality of PhGs lips, pectin-coated PhGs lips (P-lips) and chitosan-coated PhGs lips (C-lips) was evaluated by the average particle size, encapsulation efficiency (EE) and other indicators, which indicated that the nanoparticles had been successfully prepared. Compared with extrusion or ultrasonic operation alone, the EEs of ethanol injection combined with extrusion-ultrasonic increased by 8 % and 18 % respectively. Subsequently, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and DSC thermal analysis showed that PhGs in PhGs lips may produce hydrogen bonding forces with phospholipids, and pectin and chitosan in P-lips and C-lips were not only coated on the surface of PhGs lips, but also might have some interaction between them. Cell experiments showed that PhGs lips, P-lips and C-lips can effectively improve the bioavailability of PhGs. In addition, the storage stability of P-lips and C-lips was not significantly improved compared to PhGs lips, but their digestive stability was significantly improved, and the final retention rate in simulated intestinal fluid was about 25 % higher than that of PhGs lips.

Abstract
In this study, Auricularia cornea var. Li. polysaccharides (ACP) were used as the research object to prepare liposome gel and determine its antioxidant activity in vitro. Phosphorylated Auricularia cornea var. Li. polysaccharides (P-ACP) were prepared via the phosphorylation of ACP by the phosphate method. Additionally, phosphorylated Auricularia cornea var. Li. polysaccharide liposomes (P-ACPL) were prepared using a reverse evaporation method. Finally, phosphorylated Auricularia cornea var. Li. polysaccharide liposome gel (P-ACPLG) was prepared by dispersing the P-ACPL in the gel matrix. The results show that the phosphorylation of the P-ACP was 15.51%, the containment rate of the P-ACPL was 84.50%, the average particle size was (192.2 ± 3.3) nm, and the particle size distribution map had a homogeneous peak, resulting in the particle dispersion being uniform and the polydispersion index (PDI) being 0.134 ± 0.021. The average Zeta potential was (-33.4 ± 0.57) mV. In addition, the in vitro antioxidant activity of the P-ACPL was slightly higher than that of the ACP and P-ACP. After the P-ACPL was emulsified into P-ACPLG, the DPPH, hydroxyl radical clearance, and reducing the ability of P-ACPL remained unchanged. In general, the P-ACPLG prepared in this study has good antioxidant activity in vitro and can retain the antioxidant activity of P-ACPL in vitro well.

Abstract
Urolithin A (UroA) is gut metabolites of ellagitannins possessing a vast range of biological activities, but its poor water solubility and low bioavailability hinder its potential applications. This study utilized the pH dependent dissolution characteristics of UroA and employed a simple pH-driven method to load UroA into liposomes. The characterization and stability of obtained liposomes under different conditions were evaluated, and their oral bioavailability was tested by pharmacokinetics, and compared with UroA liposomes prepared using traditional thin film dispersion (TFM-ULs). Results indicated that liposomes could effectively encapsulate UroA. The UroA liposomes prepared by the pH-driven method (PDM-ULs) showed lower particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and higher encapsulation efficiency than TFM-ULs. Interestingly, better thermal stability, storage stability, in vitro digestion stability, and higher bioaccessibility were also found on PDM-ULs. Moreover, pharmacokinetic experiments in rats demonstrated that PDM-ULs could significantly improve the bioavailability of UroA, with an absorption efficiency 1.91 times that of TFM-ULs. Therefore, our findings suggest that liposomes prepared by pH-driven methods have great potential in improving the stability and bioavailability of UroA.

Abstract
The low mechanical strength, water deficiency, and oxidative protection of organic membranes impede their use as food-grade packaging materials. Cinnamaldehyde (CIN) tends to lose its activity owing to its instability. In this study, CIN was added to flaxseed gum (FG)/chitosan (CS) films prepared in a "sandwich" structure. The influence of CIN dosage on the properties of the composite films was studied, and the film formation mechanism of the membrane was explored. The elongation at break, water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability, and light transmittance of the composite film with 1.5% CIN were lower than those of the FG/CS/FG film. Supplementation of the composite membrane with CIN generated new hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and C-O-C bonds, which converted the structure of the composite film into a sheet and increased its crystallinity without markedly affecting its thermal stability. Therefore, CIN is an extremely useful additive for improving the applicability of flaxseed gum/CS membranes as food-grade packaging films.

Abstract
Sodium alginate (SA) was used to coat liposomes containing DPP-IV inhibitory collagen peptides to improve their stability and in vitro absorption for intra-oral delivery. The liposome structure as well as entrapment efficiency and DPP-IV inhibitory activity was characterized. The liposome stability was determined by measuring in vitro release rates and their gastrointestinal stability. Transcellular permeability of liposomes was further tested to characterize their permeability in small intestinal epithelial cells. The results showed that the 0.3% SA coating increased the diameter (166.7 nm to 249.9 nm), absolute value of zeta potential (30.2 mV to 40.1 mV) and entrapment efficiency (61.52% to 70.99%) of liposomes. The SA-coated liposomes containing collagen peptides showed enhanced storage stability within one month, gastrointestinal stability increased by 50% in bioavailability, transcellular permeability increased by 18% in transmission percentage, and in vitro release rates reduced by 34%, compared to uncoated liposomes. SA coating liposomes are promising carriers for transporting hydrophilic molecules, may be beneficial for improving nutrient absorption and can protect bioactive compounds from being inactivated in the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract
Liposomes composed of soy lecithin (SL) have been studied widely for drug delivery applications. The stability and elasticity of liposomal vesicles are improved by incorporating additives, including edge activators. In this study, we report the effect of sodium taurodeoxycholate (STDC, a bile salt) upon the microstructural characteristics of SL vesicles. Liposomes, prepared by the thin film hydration method, were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), electron microscopy, and rheological techniques. We noticed a reduction in the size of vesicles with the incremental addition of STDC. Initial changes in the size of spherical vesicles were ascribed to the edge-activating action of STDC (0.05 to 0.17 µM). At higher concentrations (0.23 to 0.27 µM), these vesicles transformed into cylindrical structures. Morphological transitions at higher STDC concentrations would have occurred due to its hydrophobic interaction with SL molecules in the bilayer. This was ascertained from nuclear magnetic resonance observations. Whereas shape transitions underscored the deformability of vesicles in the presence of STDC, the consistency of bilayer thickness ruled out any dissociative effect. It was interesting to notice that SL-STDC mixed structures could survive high thermal stress, electrolyte addition, and dilution.

Abstract
The Echium amoenum Fisch. and C.A. Mey. (E. amoenum) is an herb native from Iranian shrub, and its blue-violet flowers are traditionally used as medical plants. In the present study, an antioxidant phytocomplex was extracted from the flowers of E. amoenum by ultrasounds-assisted hydroalcoholic maceration. The main components, contained in the extract, have been detected using HPLC-DAD, and rosmarinic acid was found to be the most abundant. The antioxidant power of the extract along with the phenolic content were measured using colorimetric assays. The extract was loaded in liposomes, which were enriched adding different bioadhesive polymers (i.e., mucin, xanthan gum and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt) individually or in combination. The main physico-chemical properties (i.e. size, size distribution, surface charge) of the prepared vesicles were measured as well as their stability on storage. The viscosity of dispersion and the ability of vesicles to interact with mucus were evaluated measuring their stability in a mucin dispersion and mobility in a mucin film. The biocompatibility and the ability of the formulations to protect keratinocytes from damages caused by hydrogen peroxide and to promote the cell migration were measured in vitro.

Abstract
A drawback in the development of treatments that can reach the retina is the presence of barriers in the eye that restrain compounds from reaching the target. Intravitreal injections hold promise for retinal delivery, but the natural defenses in the vitreous can rapidly degrade or eliminate therapeutic molecules. Injectable hydrogel implants, which act as a reservoir, can allow for long-term drug delivery with a single injection into the eye, but still suffer due to the fast clearance of the released drugs when traversing the vitreous and random diffusion that leads to lower pharmaceutic efficacy. A combination with HA-covered nanoparticles, which can be released from the gel and more readily pass through the vitreous to increase the delivery of therapeutic agents to the retina, represents an advanced and elegant way to overcome some of the limitations in eye drug delivery. In this article, we developed hybrid PLGA-Dotap NPs that, due to their hyaluronic acid coating, can improve in vivo distribution throughout the vitreous and delivery to retinal cells. Moreover, a hydrogel implant was developed to act as a depot for the hybrid NPs to better control and slow their release. These results are a first step to improve the treatment of retinal diseases by protecting and transporting the therapeutic treatment across the vitreous and to improve treatment options by creating a depot system for long-term treatments.

Abstract
Liposomes have several advantages, such as the ability to be employed as a carrier/vehicle for a variety of drug molecules and at the same time they are safe and biodegradable. In the recent times, compared to other delivery systems, liposomes have been one of the most well-established and commercializing drug products of new drug delivery methods for majority of therapeutic applications. On the other hand, it has several limitations, particularly in terms of stability, which impedes product development and performance. In this review, we reviewed all the potential instabilities (physical, chemical, and biological) that a formulation development scientist confronts throughout the development of liposomal formulations as along with the ways to overcome these challenges. We have also discussed the effect of microbiological contamination on liposomal formulations with a focus on the use of sterilization methods used to improve the stability. Finally, we have reviewed quality control techniques and regulatory considerations recommended by the agencies (USFDA and MHLW) for liposome drug product development.

Abstract
Cinnamaldehyde as an antioxidant was encapsulated in inulin-modified nanoliposomes in order to improve its physical and antioxidant stability. The microstructure, particle size and volume distribution of cinnamaldehyde liposomes were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The particle size and polydispersion index (PDI) values of the inulin modified liposomes were 72.52 ± 0.71 nm and 0.223 ± 0.031, respectively. The results showed that the liposomes after surface modification with inulin remained spherical. Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis showed that hydrogen bonds were formed between the inulin and the liposome membrane. Inulin binding also restricted the freedom of movement of lipid molecules and enhanced the order of the hydrophobic core of the membrane and the polar headgroup region in lipid molecules. Therefore, the addition of different concentrations of inulin influenced the permeability of the liposome bilayer membrane. However, when inulin was excessive, the capacity of the bilayer membrane to load the cinnamaldehyde was reduced, and the stability of the system was reduced. Additionally, the encapsulation efficiency (EE) and retention rate (RR) of cinnamaldehyde from inulin-modified liposomes during storage were determined. The EE value of the inulin modified liposomes was 70.71 ± 0.53%. The liposomes with 1.5% inulin concentration had the highest retention rate (RR) and the smallest particle size during storage at 4 °C. The addition of inulin also enhanced the thermal stability of the liposomes. Based on the results, the surface modification improved the oxidation stability of liposomes, especially the DPPH scavenging ability. In conclusion, these results might help to develop inulin as a potential candidate for the effective modification of the surface of liposomes and provide data and conclusions for it.

Abstract
Cinnamaldehyde is an essential oil extracted from the leaves, bark, roots and flowers of cinnamon plants (genus Cinnamomum). Cinnamaldehyde has shown biological functions such as antioxidants, antimicrobials, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity and anti-cancer. However, poor solubility in water as well as molecular sensitivity to oxygen, light, and high temperature limit the direct application of cinnamaldehyde. Researchers are using different encapsulation techniques to maximize the potential biological functions of cinnamaldehyde. Different delivery systems such as liposomes, emulsions, biopolymer nanoparticles, complex coacervation, molecular inclusion, and spray drying have been developed for this purpose. The particle size and morphology, composition and physicochemical properties influence the performance of each delivery system. Consequently, the individual delivery system has its advantages and limitations for specific applications. Given the essential role of cinnamaldehyde in functional food and food preservation, appropriate approaches should be applied in the encapsulation and application of encapsulated cinnamaldehyde. This review systematically analyzes available encapsulation techniques for cinnamaldehyde in terms of their design, properties, advantages and limitations, and food application status. The information provided in this manuscript will assist in the development and widespread use of cinnamaldehyde-loaded particles in the food and beverage industries.

Abstract
The last decade has witnessed a burgeoning global movement towards essential and vegetable oils in the food, agriculture, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and textile industries thanks to their natural and safe status, broad acceptance by consumers, and versatile functional properties. However, efforts to develop new therapy or functional agents based on plant oils have met with challenges of limited stability and/or reduced efficacy. As a result, there has been increased research interest in the encapsulation of plant oils, whereby the nanocarriers serve as barrier between plant oils and the environment and control oil release leading to improved efficacy, reduced toxicity and enhanced patient compliance and convenience. In this review, special concern has been addressed to the encapsulation of essential and vegetable oils in three types of nanocarriers: polymeric nanoparticles, liposomes and solid lipid nanoparticles. First, the chemical composition of essential and vegetable oils was handled. Moreover, we gather together the research findings reported by the literature regarding the different techniques used to generate these nanocarriers with their significant findings. Finally, differences and similarities between these nanocarriers are discussed, along with current and future applications that are warranted by their structures and properties.

Abstract
There is an increasing need for novel drugs and new strategies for the therapy of invasive candidiasis. This study aimed to develop and characterize liposome-based nanoparticles of carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, citral, and thymol with anti-Candida activities. Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide- and monoolein-based liposomes in a 1:2 molar ratio were prepared using a lipid-film hydration method. Liposomes were assembled with equal volumes of liposomal stock dispersion and stock solutions of carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, citral, or thymol in dimethyl sulfoxide. Cytotoxicity was tested on RAW 264.7 macrophages. In vitro antifungal activity of liposomes with phytocompounds was evaluated according to European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) methodology using clinical isolates of Candida albicans, Candida auris, Candida dubliniensis, and Candida tropicalis Finally, the ability of macrophage cells to kill Candida isolates after addition of phytocompounds and their nanoparticles was determined. Nanoparticles with 64 μg/ml of cinnamaldehyde, 256 μg/ml of citral, and 128 μg/ml of thymol had the best characteristics among the formulations tested. The highest encapsulation efficiencies were achieved with citral (78% to 83%) and carvacrol (66% to 71%) liposomes. Carvacrol and thymol in liposome-based nanoparticles were nontoxic regardless of the concentration. Moreover, carvacrol and thymol maintained their antifungal activity after encapsulation, and there was a significant reduction (∼41%) of yeast survival when macrophages were incubated with carvacrol or thymol liposomes. In conclusion, carvacrol and thymol liposomes possess high stability, low cytotoxicity, and antifungal activity that act synergistically with macrophages.

Abstract
Conventional liposomes still face many challenges associated with the poor physical and chemical stability, considerable loss of encapsulated cargo, lack of stimulus responsiveness, and rapid elimination from blood circulation. Integration of versatile functional biopolymers has emerged as an attractive strategy to overcome the limitation of usage of liposomes. This review comprehensively summarizes the most recent studies (2015-2020) and their challenges aiming at the exploration of biopolymer-liposome hybrid systems, including surface-modified liposomes, biopolymer-incorporated liposomes, guest-in-cyclodextrin-in-liposome, liposome-in-hydrogel, liposome-in-film, and liposome-in-nanofiber. The physicochemical principles and key technical information underlying the combined strategies for the fabrication of polymeric liposomes, the advantages and limitations of each of the systems, and the stabilization mechanisms are discussed through various case studies. Special emphasis is directed toward the synergistic efficiencies of biopolymers and phospholipid bilayers on encapsulation, protection, and controlled delivery of bioactives (e.g., vitamins, carotenoids, phenolics, peptides, and other health-related compounds) for the biomedical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and functional food applications. The major challenges, opportunities, and possible further developments for future studies are also highlighted.

Abstract
In this work, cinnamaldehyde-loaded liposomes decorated with different concentrations of chitosan (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mg/mL) were prepared and their physical and antibacterial properties were evaluated. The results showed that the physical decoration of chitosan improved the encapsulation efficiency and storage stability of the liposomes. Liposomes decorated with chitosan at the concentration of 0.25 to 4 mg/mL were able to achieve an obvious antibacterial efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus after only 10 min of incubation. The antibacterial efficiency of chitosan-decorated liposomes was still higher than 90% after being stored for 28 d when the chitosan concentration was greater than 1 mg/mL. Besides, increasing the chitosan concentration significantly decreased the minimum inhibitory concentration of the liposomes. The comparison of the antibacterial activities and mechanisms of cinnamaldehyde-loaded liposomes decorated with chitosan at a concentration of 4 mg/mL (CH-CL), cinnamaldehyde-loaded liposomes (CL), cinnamaldehyde, and chitosan revealed that chitosan and cinnamaldehyde exerted a cumulative and synergistic bacteriostatic effect in the liposomes. This led to damage to the cell membrane integrity, causing cell death by inducing leakage of intracellular components. These results can potentially provide guidance for the preparation and application of natural preservatives with rapid and long-term bacteriostatic effects.

Abstract
Development of new sources and isolation processes has recently enhanced the production of cellulose in many different colloidal states. Even though cellulose is widely used as a functional ingredient in the food industry, the relationship between the colloidal states of cellulose and its applications is mostly unknown. This review covers the recent progress on illustrating various colloidal states of cellulose and the influencing factors with special emphasis on the correlation between the colloidal states of cellulose and its applications in food industry. The associated unique colloidal states of cellulose like high aspect ratio, crystalline structure, surface charge, and wettability not only promote the stability of colloidal systems, but also help improve the nutritional aspects of cellulose by facilitating its interactions with digestive system. Further studies are required for the rational control and improvement of the colloidal states of cellulose and producing food systems with enhanced functional and nutritional properties.

Abstract
The occurrence of deoxynivalenol (DON) in animal feed is a serious issue for the livestock industry. Approaches using mycotoxin adsorbents are key to decreasing mycotoxin carryover from contaminated feed to animals. In this paper, a novel functional microsphere adsorbent comprising an alginate/carboxymethyl cellulose sodium composite loaded with calcium (SA/CMC-Ca) was prepared by an emulsification process to adsorb DON from polluted corn steep liquor (CSL) containing DON at a concentration of 3.60 μg/mL. Batch experiments were conducted under different experimental conditions: CSL volumes, reaction times, desorption times, and microsphere recyclability. Results showed that 5 g of microspheres reacted with 5 mL of DON-polluted CSL for 5 min, the microspheres can be recycled 155 times, and the maximum DON adsorption for the microspheres was 2.34 μg/mL. During recycling, microspheres were regenerated by deionized water every time; after the microspheres were cleaned, DON in the deionized water was degraded by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at 70 °C for 1 h at pH 12. The mechanism for physical adsorption and hydrogen bonding was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing that the microsphere adsorbent SA/CMC-Ca adsorbs DON. Therefore, we suggest that using microsphere absorbents would be a possible way to address DON-contaminated CSL issues in animal feed.

A novel, facilely prepared, recyclable sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-ammonium phosphomolybdate composite (CMC-AMP) was synthesized by chemical cross-linking and used for Cs+ removal. The effects of adsorbent dosage, pH value, initial Cs+ concentration, contact time, temperature and competitive ions on adsorption were investigated. The results showed that CMC-AMP with good mechanical properties could effectively adsorb Cs+ in a wide pH range. In addition, the adsorption process of CMC-AMP was better fitted with the Lagergren first-second model and Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, CMC-AMP can be reused five times using ammonium chloride as the eluent without an obvious decrease in absorption activity. The results reveal that CMC-AMP can be used as a low cost and recyclable Cs+ adsorbent.

Abstract
The self-assembled natural and synthetic polymers are booming. However, natural polymers obtained from native or modified carbohydrate polymers (CPs), such as celluloses, chitosan, glucans, gums, pectins, and starches, have had special attention as raw material in the manufacture of self-assembled polymer composite materials having several forms: films, hydrogels, micelles, and particles. The easy manipulation of the architecture of the CPs, as well as their high availability in nature, low cost, and being sustainable and green polymers have been the main positive points in the use of them for different applications. CPs have been used as building blocks for composite structures, and their easy orientation and ordering has given rise to self-assembled CPs (SCPs). These macromolecules have been little studied for food applications. Nonetheless, their research has grown mainly in the last 5 years as encapsulated food additive wall materials, food coatings, and edible films. The multifaceted properties (systems sensitive to pH, temperature, ionic strength, types of ions, mechanical force, and enzymes) of these devices are leading to the development of advanced food materials. This review article focused on the analysis of SCPs for food applications in order to encourage other research groups for their preparation and implementation.

Abstract
Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was grafted onto the surface of soy protein isolate (SPI) to obtain soy protein isolate-carboxymethyl cellulose conjugate (SPC). Avermectin (AVM) was hydrophobically encapsulated as a model drug to obtain SPC@AVM. The reaction between SPI and CMC was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis and SDS-PAGE electrophoresis. The results of scanning electron microscopy showed that the average particle size of the drug-loaded microspheres was 129 nm and the shape of microspheres changed from block to spherical after the addition of AVM. After encapsulation of AVM, the absolute value of zeta potential was greater than 15 mV, which indicated better stability. Compared to AVM solution, SPC@AVM showed more wettability on the leaf surface and the contact angle on the leaves decreased from 71.64° to 57.33°. The maximum liquid holding capacity increased by 41.41%, from 8.85 to 12.52 mg cm-2, which effectively reduced leaf loss. SPC@AVM also prevented UV photolysis, wherein the half-life was extended from 18 to 68 min when exposed to UV light. Moreover, toxicity tests showed that the encapsulation of AVM was beneficial to retain the insecticidal effect of AVM in the presence of ultraviolet light. The release rate of AVM showed pH responsiveness and the release rate under neutral conditions was faster than acidic and alkaline conditions. Moreover, the process conformed to the Weibull model.
