Calcium alginate elastic capsules for microalgal cultivation

Calcium alginate elastic capsules with a core-shell structure are versatile spherical solid beads that can be produced in large quantities using various techniques. This type of capsule is a promising platform for cell culture applications, owing to its mechanical elasticity and transparency. This paper reports the production of calcium alginate capsules with high consistency, and for the first time, demonstrates the feasibility of the capsules for microalgal cultivation. Cell growth analysis reveals that the vibrationally-shaken calcium alginate elastic capsule platform yielded a higher maximum cell number (4.86 × 108 cells per mL) during the cultivation period than the control solution platforms. Aquafeed and food supplements for humans are the targeted applications of this novel platform.

Parameters affecting calcium-alginate bead characteristics: Viscosity of hydrocolloids and water solubility of core material

In this study, calcium-alginate beads were produced and characterized by ionic gelation technique using three different copolymers (gum arabic (GA), κ-carrageenan (CG), guar gum (GG)), and seven different phenolic compounds (tannic acid, chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, naringin, and hesperidin). The effect of the viscosity of copolymer and water solubility of the phenolic compound on the size, shape, swelling, encapsulation efficiency (EE), loading capacity (LC), and production yield (PY) of the beads were investigated. In addition, the impact of the core material concentration in the calcium chloride solution on the EE was determined. The bead sizes increased by 6.8, 11.4, and 35.3 %, respectively, with the use of GA, CG, and GG. The EE of the beads ranged from 28.36 to 89.30 % and increased with increasing copolymer viscosity and decreasing water solubility of the phenolic compound. When the core material concentration difference between the alginate and calcium chloride solutions was reduced to zero, the EE of the gallic acid bead increased from 32.95 % to 89.05 %. The results of this study show that copolymer viscosity, the water solubility of core material, and the core material concentration difference between alginate and calcium solutions should be considered in ionic gelation applications.

Encapsulated Microstructures of Beneficial Functional Lipids and Their Applications in Foods and Biomedicines

Beneficial functional lipids are essential nutrients for the growth and development of humans and animals, which nevertheless possess poor chemical stability because of heat/light-sensitivity. Various encapsulation technologies have been developed to protect these nutrients against adverse factors. Different microstructures are exhibited through different encapsulation methods, which influence the encapsulation efficiency and release behavior at the same time. This review summarizes the effects of preparation methods and process parameters on the microstructures of capsules at first. The mechanisms of the different microstructures on encapsulation efficiency and controlled release behavior of core materials are analyzed. Next, a comprehensive overview on the beneficial functional lipids capsules in the latest food and biomedicine applications are provided as well as the matching relationship between the microstructures of the capsules and applications are discussed. Finally, the remaining challenges and future possible directions that have potential interest are outlined. The purpose of this review is to convey the construction of beneficial functional lipids capsules and the function mechanism, a critical analysis on its current status and challenges, and opinions on its future development. This review is believed to promote communication among the food, pharmacy, agronomy, engineering, and nutrition industries.

Shellac Gum/Carrageenan Alginate-Based Core-Shell Systems Containing Peppermint Essential Oil Formulated by Mixture Design Approach

Peppermint essential oil is encapsulated by inverse ionotropic gelation in core–shell systems, composed of alginate (ALG) alone or alginate with shellac gum (SHL) and/or carrageenan (CRG). A mixture design approach is used to evaluate the correlation between the formulation composition and some properties of the final products. Immediately after the preparation, capsules appear rounded with a smooth and homogeneous surface, having a similar particle size ranging from 3.8 mm to 4.5 mm. The drying process, carried out at 40 °C in an oven for 3 h, reduces capsules’ diameters by at least 50% and has a negative impact on the shape of the systems because they lose their regular shape and their external membrane partially collapses. The peppermint essential oil content of dried capsules is between 14.84% and 33.75%. The swelling behaviour of the systems is affected by the composition of their outer shell. When the external membrane is composed of alginate and shellac gum, the capsule ability to swell is lower than that of the systems containing alginate alone. The swelling ratio reaches 31% for alginate capsules but does not exceed 21% if shellac is present. Differently, when the second polymer of the shell is carrageenan, the swelling ability increases as a function of polymer concentration and the swelling ratio reaches 360%. In the case of systems whose outer membrane is a polymeric ternary mixture, the swelling capacity increases or decreases according to the concentrations of the individual polymers. The obtained results suggest that carrageenan could be a useful excipient to increase the swelling behaviour of the systems, while shellac gum makes the system shell more hydrophobic. The use of a mixture design (i.e., the use of ternary diagrams and related calculations), in which each single component is chosen to provide specific properties to the final mixture, could be the right approach to develop improved formulations with a tailored essential oil release profile.
