Abstract
Water pollution remains a widespread problem, affecting the health and wellbeing of people around the globe. While current advancements in wastewater treatment and desalination show promise, there are still challenges that need to be overcome to make these technologies commercially viable. Nanotechnology plays a pivotal role in water purification and desalination processes today. However, the release of nanoparticles (NPs) into the environment without proper safeguards can lead to both physical and chemical toxicity. Moreover, many methods of NP synthesis are expensive and not environmentally sustainable. The utilization of biomass as a source for the production of NPs has the potential to mitigate issues pertaining to cost, sustainability, and pollution. The utilization of biobased nanomaterials (bio-NMs) sourced from biomass has garnered attention in the field of water purification due to their cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Several research studies have been conducted to efficiently produce NPs (both inorganic and organic) from biomass for applications in wastewater treatment. Biosynthesized materials such as zinc oxide NPs, phytogenic magnetic NPs, biopolymer-coated metal NPs, cellulose nanocrystals, and silver NPs, among others, have demonstrated efficacy in enhancing the process of water purification. The utilization of environmentally friendly NPs presents a viable option for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of water pollution eradication. The present review delves into the topic of biomass, its origins, and the methods by which it can be transformed into NPs utilizing an environmentally sustainable approach. The present study will examine the utilization of greener NPs in contemporary wastewater and desalination technologies.

Abstract
Conventional nondegradable packaging and mulch films, after reaching the end of their use, become a major source of waste and are primarily disposed of in landfills. Accumulation of non-degradable film residues in the soil leads to diminished soil fertility, reduced crop yield, and can potentially affect humans. Application of degradable films is still limited due to the high cost, poor mechanical, and gas barrier properties of current biobased synthetic polymers. In this respect, natural polysaccharides and proteins can offer potential solutions. Having versatile functional groups, three-dimensional network structures, biodegradability, ease of processing, and the potential for surface modifications make polysaccharides and proteins excellent candidates for quality films. Besides, their low-cost availability as industrial waste/byproducts makes them cost-effective alternatives. This review paper covers the performance properties, cost assessment, and in-depth analysis of macromolecular structures of some natural polysaccharides and proteins-based films that have great potential for packaging and mulch applications. Proper dissolution of biopolymers to improve molecular interactions and entanglement, and establishment of crosslinkages to form an ordered and cohesive polymeric structure can help to obtain films with good properties. Simple aqueous-based film formulation techniques and utilization of waste/byproducts can stimulate the adoption of affordable biobased films on a large-scale.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) is known for its remarkable properties, such as good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and renewability, in addition to its antibacterial and biological activities. However, as CS is insoluble in water, it displays limited antibacterial performance under neutral and physiological conditions. A viable solution to this problem is grafting chemically modified groups onto the CS framework, thereby increasing its solubility and enhancing its antibacterial effect. Herein, the antibacterial action mechanism of CS and its derivatives is reviewed, confirming the prevalent use of composite materials comprising CS and its derivatives as an antibacterial agent. Generally, the antimicrobial ability of CS-based biomaterials can be enhanced by incorporating supplementary polymers and antimicrobial agents. Research on CS-based composite biomaterials is ongoing and numerous types of biomaterials have been reported, including inorganic nanoparticles, antibacterial agents, and CS derivatives. The development of these composite materials has considerably expanded the application of CS-based antibacterial materials. This study reviews the latest progress in research regarding CS-based composite hydrogels for wound repair, tissue engineering, drug release, water purification, and three-dimensional printing applications. Finally, the summary and future outlook of CS-based antibacterial hydrogels are presented in anticipation of a broader range of applications of CS-based antibacterial hydrogels.

Abstract
Novel films based on watermelon peel pectin (WMP) incorporated with purple cabbage extract (PCE) were developed for monitoring the freshness of mutton. The FTIR result showed that WMP and PCE interacted through hydrogen bonds. Low PCE content (≤1.5%) could be well dispersed in the film matrix, resulting in an enhancement in light transmittance, mechanical properties, barrier properties, and thermal stability. Excessive addition of PCE destroyed the compact structure of the film and decreased the comprehensive properties. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of WMP/PCE films were proportional to the amount of incorporated PCE. Moreover, the color of the film deepened as the PCE content increased. The film had excellent color stability and pH response properties. The WMP/PCE1.5 film color varied from mauve to baby blue according to the quality of mutton (fresh to spoiled). Our results suggested that the WMP/PCE film might have great potential for monitoring the freshness of mutton.

Abstract
Chitosan is a multifunctional biopolymer that is widely used in the food and medical fields because of its good antibacterial, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibiting activity and its degradability. The biological activity of chitosan as a new food preservation material has gradually become a hot research topic. This paper reviews recent research on the bioactive mechanism of chitosan and introduces strategies for modifying and applying chitosan for food preservation and different preservation techniques to explore the potential application value of active chitosan-based food packaging. Finally, issues and perspectives on the role of chitosan in enhancing the freshness of food products are presented to provide a theoretical basis and scientific reference for subsequent research.
