Abstract
Nanoencapsulation has found numerous applications in the food and nutraceutical industries. Micro and nanoencapsulated forms of bioactives have proven benefits in terms of stability, release, and performance in the body. However, the encapsulated ingredient is often subjected to a wide range of processing conditions and this is followed by storage, consumption, and transit along the gastrointestinal tract. A strong understanding of the fate of nanoencapsulates in the biological system is mandatory as it provides valuable insights for ingredient selection, formulation, and application. In addition to their efficacy, there is also the need to assess the safety of ingested nanoencapsulates. Given the rising research and commercial focus of this subject, this review provides a strong focus on their interaction factors and mechanisms, highlighting their prospective biological fate. This review also covers various approaches to studying the fate of nanoencapsulates in the body. Also, with emphasis on the overall scope, the need for a new advanced integrated common methodology to evaluate the fate of nanoencapsulates post-administration is discussed.

Abstract
In the food sector, one of the most important economic activities is the dairy industry, which has been facing many challenges in order to meet the increasing demand by consumers for natural and minimally processed products with high quality. In this sense, the application of innovative and emerging technologies can be an interesting alternative, for example, the use of nanotechnology in packaging and as delivery systems. This technology has the potential to improve the quality and safety of dairy products, representing an interesting approach for delivering food preservatives and improving the mechanical, barrier and functional properties of packaging. Several applications and promising results of nanostructures for dairy product preservation can be found throughout this review, including the use of metallic and polymeric nanoparticles, lipid-based nanostructures, nanofibers, nanofilms and nanocoatings. In addition, some relevant examples of the direct application of nanostructured natural antimicrobials in milk and cheese are presented and discussed, as well as the use of milk agar as a model for a preliminary test. Despite their high cost and the difficulties for scale-up, interesting results of these technologies in dairy foods and packaging materials have promoted a growing interest of the dairy industry.

The Effect of Sulfobetaine Coating in Inhibiting the Interaction between Lyotropic Liquid Crystalline Nanogels and Proteins. Gels 2022; 8:gels8100653. Abstract
The injective lyotropic liquid crystalline nanogels (LLCNs) were widely used in drug delivery systems. But when administered in vivo, LLCNs exposed to the biological environment interact with proteins. Recently, it has been shown that nanoparticles coated with zwitterions can inhibit their interaction with proteins. Thus, in this study, the interaction between proteins and LLCNs coated with the zwitterionic material sulfobetaine (GLLCNs@HDSB) was investigated using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein. Interestingly, it was found that GLLCNs@HDSB at higher concentrations (≥0.8 mg/mL) could block its interaction with BSA, but not at lower concentrations (<0.8 mg/mL), according to the results of ultraviolet, fluorescence, and circular dichroism spectra. In the ultraviolet spectra, the absorbance of GLLCNs@HDSB (0.8 mg/mL) was 1.9 times higher than that without the sulfobetaine coating (GLLCNs) after incubation with protein; the fluorescence quenching intensity of GLLCNs@HDSB was conversely larger than that of the GLLCNs; in circular dichroism spectra, the ellipticity value of GLLCNs@HDSB was significantly smaller than that of the GLLCNs, and the change in GLLCNs@HDSB was 10 times higher than that of the GLLCNs. Generally, nanoparticles coated with sulfobetaine can inhibit their interaction with proteins, but in this study, LLCNs showed a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect. It could be inferred that in contrast to the surface of nanoparticles covered with sulfobetaine in other cases, the sulfobetaine in this study interacted with the LLCNs and was partially inserted into the hydrophobic region of the LLCNs. In conclusion, this study suggests that coating-modified nanoparticles do not necessarily avoid interacting with proteins, and we should also study coating-modified nanoparticles interacting with proteins both in vitro and in vivo. In the future, finding a coating material to completely inhibit the interaction between LLCNs and proteins will generate a great impetus to promote the clinical transformation of LLCNs.

Abstract
Nanoparticles-based drug delivery systems have attracted significant attention in biomedical fields because they can deliver loaded cargoes to the target site in a controlled manner. However, tremendous challenges must still be overcome to reach the expected targeting and therapeutic efficacy in vivo. These challenges mainly arise because the interaction between nanoparticles and biological systems is complex and dynamic and is influenced by the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles and the heterogeneity of biological systems. Importantly, once the nanoparticles are injected into the blood, a protein corona will inevitably form on the surface. The protein corona creates a new biological identity which plays a vital role in mediating the bio-nano interaction and determining the ultimate results. Thus, it is essential to understand how the protein corona affects the delivery journey of nanoparticles in vivo and what we can do to exploit the protein corona for better delivery efficiency. In this review, we first summarize the fundamental impact of the protein corona on the delivery journey of nanoparticles. Next, we emphasize the strategies that have been developed for tailoring and exploiting the protein corona to improve the transportation behavior of nanoparticles in vivo. Finally, we highlight what we need to do as a next step towards better understanding and exploitation of the protein corona. We hope these insights into the "Yin and Yang" effect of the protein corona will have profound implications for understanding the role of the protein corona in a wide range of nanoparticles.

Nano-Formulation Endows Quorum Quenching Enzyme-Antibiotic Hybrids with Improved Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activities against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms23147632. Abstract
The emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria coupled with the shortage of efficient antibacterials is one of the most serious unresolved problems for modern medicine. In this study, the nano-hybridization of the clinically relevant antibiotic, gentamicin, with the bacterial pro-pathological cell-to-cell communication-quenching enzyme, acylase, is innovatively employed to increase its antimicrobial efficiency against Pseudomonas aeruginosa planktonic cells and biofilms. The sonochemically generated hybrid gentamicin/acylase nano-spheres (GeN_AC NSs) showed a 16-fold improved bactericidal activity when compared with the antibiotic in bulk form, due to the enhanced physical interaction and disruption of the P. aeruginosa cell membrane. The nano-hybrids attenuated 97 ± 1.8% of the quorum sensing-regulated virulence factors’ production and inhibited the bacterium biofilm formation in an eight-fold lower concentration than the stand-alone gentamicin NSs. The P. aeruginosa sensitivity to GeN_AC NSs was also confirmed in a real time assay monitoring the bacterial cells elimination, using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation. In protein-enriched conditions mimicking the in vivo application, these hybrid nano-antibacterials maintained their antibacterial and antibiofilm effectiveness at concentrations innocuous to human cells. Therefore, the novel GeN_AC NSs with complementary modes of action show potential for the treatment of P. aeruginosa biofilm infections at a reduced antibiotic dosage.

Abstract
Last several years, a rapid increase in drug resistance to traditional antibiotics has driven the emergence and development of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). AMPs have also gained considerable attention from scientists due to their high potency in combatting infectious pathogens. A subset of analogues and their derivatives with specific targets have been successfully designed based on natural peptide patterns. In this review, scientific knowledge on the mechanisms of action related to biological activity and structure-activity relationship (SAR) of AMPs are summarized, and the biological applications in several important fields are critically discussed. SAR shows that the positive charge, secondary structure, special amino acid residues, hydrophobicity, and helicity of AMPs are closely related to their biological activities. The combination of nanotechnology, bioinformatics, and genetic engineering can accelerate to achieve the application of AMPs as effective, safe, economical, and nonresistant antimicrobial agents in medicine, the food and feed industries, and agriculture in coming years. Given the intense interest in AMPs, further investigations are needed in the future to evaluate the specific structure and function that make their use favorable in several industries. This review may provide a comprehensive reference for future studies on chemical modifications, mechanistic exploration, and applications of AMPs.
