Abstract
Seven fatty acids were detected by GC-MS in Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed oil extracted at different temperatures, including Palmitic acid C16:0, Stearic acid C18:0, Oleic acid C18:1, Eicosenoic acid C20:1, Docosenoic acid C22:1, Tetracosenoic acid C24:1, and Linoleic acid C18:2. The highest content of nervonic acid (NA) was found in Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed oil extracted at 70 °C. Three methods were selected to analyze the extraction rate of nervonic acid in Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed oil, including urea complexation, low-temperature solvent crystallization, and a combined treatment using these two methods. The final content of nervonic acid obtained was 14.07%, 19.66%, and 40.17%, respectively. The combined treatment method increased the purity of nervonic acid in Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed oil by 12.62 times. Meanwhile, thermogravimetric behavior analysis of samples extracted using different methods was conducted by thermogravimetric analyzer, which suggested that the thermal stability of the samples extracted by the combined treatment was enhanced. These results can provide a new process parameter and scientific basis for the extraction of NA. At the same time, FTIR and NMR were also used to characterize the combined extraction sample, and the structure of the samples was proved.

Abstract
Food authentication, including the differentiation of geographical or botanical origin, the method of production i.e. organic vs. conventional farming as well as the detection of food fraud/adulteration, has been a rapidly growing field over the past two decades due to increasing public awareness regarding food quality and safety, nutrition, and health. Concerned parties include consumers, producers, and legislators. Thus, the development of rapid, accurate, sensitive, and reproducible analytical methods to guarantee the authenticity of foods is of primary interest to scientists and technologists. The aim of the present article is to summarize research work carried out on the authentication of Greek agricultural products using spectroscopic (NIR, FTIR, UV-Vis, Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy, NMR, IRMS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS) and chromatographic (GC, GC/MS, HPLC, HPLC/MS, etc.) methods of analysis in combination with chemometrics highlighting the chemical markers that enable product authentication. The review identified a large number of chemical markers including volatiles, phenolic substances, natural pigments, elements, isotopes, etc. which can be used for (i) the differentiation of botanical/geographical origin; conventional from organic farming; production procedure and vintage year, etc. and (ii) detection of adulteration of high quality plant and animal origin foods with lower value substitutes. Finally, the constant development of reliable analytical techniques in combination with law enforcement authorities will ensure authentic foods in terms of quality and safety for consumers.

Abstract
The quality of oil is highly dependent on its free fatty acid (FFA) content, especially due to increased restrictions on renewable fuels. As a result, there has been a growing interest in free fatty acid determination methods over the last few decades. While various standard methods are currently available, such as the American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS), International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), and Japan Oil Chemists' Society (JOCS), to obtain accurate results, there is a pressing need to investigate a fast, accurate, feasible, and eco-friendly methodology for determining FFA in biological materials. This is owing to inadequate characteristics of the methods, such as solvent consumption and reproducibility, among others. This study aims to investigate FFA determination methods to identify suitable approaches and introduce a fresh perspective.

Abstract
This paper aims to reveal the effects of multi-generational succession of eucalyptus on soil fertility, organic structure and biological properties. Soil samples were collected from eucalyptus plantations of different stand ages (5, 11, 17 and 21 years old) in a typical area in south Asia, soil organic fraction structure and content characteristics were investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to explore influences of soil fertility, enzyme activity and organic fraction on stand biomass. FTIR analysis showed that 11 infrared absorption peaks existed in the soils of this study area, attributed to silicates, aromatics, carbonate ions, sugars, esters, polysaccharides, aliphatic hydrocarbons and phenolic alcohols. Combined with the results of peak area integration, the content of esters, aromatics and phenolic alcohols was significantly higher in 17- and 21-year-old stand soils than in control soils. The results of SEM showed that organic components were negatively related (p < 0.01) to enzyme activity and biomass, with standardized coefficients of 0.53 and 0.49, respectively. In summary, multi-generation succession of eucalyptus trees can change the structure of soil organic functional group composition and promote the enrichment of aromatic and phenolic alcohol functional groups. Such changes can directly inhibit the increase in eucalyptus biomass and indirectly negatively affect biomass by inhibiting enzyme activity.

Abstract
Biofilms represent the main mode of existence of bacteria and play very significant roles in many industrial, medical and agricultural fields. Analysis of biofilms is a challenging task owing to their sophisticated composition, heterogeneity and variability. In this study, biofilms formed by the rhizobacterium Azospirillum baldaniorum (strain Sp245), isolated biofilm matrix and its macrocomponents have for the first time been studied in detail, using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, with a special emphasis on the methodology. The accompanying novel data of comparative chemical analyses of the biofilm matrix, its fractions and lipopolysaccharide isolated from the outer membrane of the cells of this strain, as well as their electrophoretic analyses (SDS-PAGE) have been found to be in good agreement with the FTIR spectroscopic results.

Abstract
Many edible plants exhibit immunomodulator activities that have beneficial effects on human health. These activities include the ability to activate, multiply, or suppress elements of the immune response. Some of these plants promote health by strengthening host defences against different diseases. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of the constituents of several edible plants, their immunomodulatory activity, and mechanism of actions for Carica papaya, Coffea sp, Asparagus cochinchinensis, Dioscorea alata, beans, mushrooms, herbs, spices, and several vegetables. The studies reported here are pre-clinical (in vitro and in vivo) and clinical studies (limited in number). The bioactive compounds responsible for the immunomodulator activity of these plants were yet to be identified. This is because the plant is naturally a complex mixture, whilst the immune system is also an intricate system involving many cells and cytokines/chemokines. Metabolomics is a key tool for conducting global profiling of metabolites in a complex system. Therefore, it offers the ability to identify the presence of compounds in plant extracts associated with their immunomodulation effects. Likewise, metabolomics can also be used to detect any changes to metabolites in the cell as a response to treatment. Therefore, affected metabolic pathways that lead to the activation of certain immune responses can be determined from one single experiment. However, we found in this review that the use of a metabolomics approach is not yet fully developed for an immunomodulator study of food plants. This is important for the direction of future research in this field because unlike medicinal plants, food plants are consumed on a regular basis in small amounts with more obvious effects on the immune system. Information about possible bioactive compounds, their interactions (synergism, antagonism), and how the human body responds to them should be studied in a more holistic way.

Abstract
Lonicera maackii (Caprifoliaceae) is a large, upright shrub with fruits that contain many bioactive compounds. Flavonoids are common active substances in L. maackii. However, there is a dearth of information about the accumulation of these flavonoids and their possible medicinal value. We used targeted metabolomics analysis based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) to analyze five developmental stages of L. maackii fruit. A total of 438 metabolites were identified in the five developmental stages, including 81 flavonoids and derivatives. The 81 flavonoids included 25 flavones and derivatives, 35 flavonols and derivatives, two isoflavones, three cyanidins and derivatives, eight procyanidins, and eight flavanones. In addition, we outlined the putative flavonoid biosynthesis pathway and screened their upstream metabolites. More importantly, we analyzed the accumulation patterns of several typical flavones and flavonols. The results reported here improved our understanding of the dynamic changes in flavonoids during fruit development and contributed to making full use of the medicinal value of L. maackii fruit.
