Pearl millet starch-based nanocomposite films reinforced with Kudzu cellulose nanocrystals and essential oil: Effect on functionality and biodegradability

Value addition of mango kernel for development and characterization of starch with starch nanoparticles for packaging applications

The present research was conducted to explore the potential of mango kernel starch from the Chaunsa variety to develop starch and starch nanoparticles (SNPs) based films. The investigation included starch isolation from mango kernel followed by the preparation of SNPs by acid hydrolysis and a thorough examination of various physicochemical properties for film formation. The properties of SNPs were found to be distinctly different from those of native starch. SNPs exhibited an aggregated form with an irregular surface, whereas native starch had an oval and elongated shape with a smooth surface. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that the starch type in SNPs was of the A-type. Additionally, the pasting properties of SNPs were minimal due to the acid hydrolysis process. SNP-based composite film was developed with (5 %) SNP concentration added. This successful incorporation of SNPs enhanced biodegradability, with complete degradation occurring within three weeks. Moreover, the composite films displayed increased burst strength, measuring 1303.51 ± 73.7 g, and lower water vapor transmission rates (WVTR) at (7.40 ± 0.50) × 10-3 g per square meter per second and reduced water solubility at 35.32 ± 3.0 %. This development represents a significant advancement in the field of eco-friendly packaging materials.

Effects of different oil additives on water resistance of corn starch straws

To investigate the effect of oil additives on improving the water resistance of corn starch straws, corn oil (CO), soybean oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO), peanut oil (PO), lard (LD) and coconut oil (CCO) were chosen and compared the structure and properties of starch straws with different oil additives. Corn starch straws (CS), and starch straws supplemented with CO, SO, RO, PO, LD and CCO were prepared by thermoplastic extrusion. The results showed that the incorporation of oils effectively enhanced the water resistance of starch straws such as water absorption, water solubility and water swelling performance. Meanwhile, the flexural strength of starch straws significantly increased. There was no significant linear relationship among starch chain length, oil unsaturation and straw performance. Among seven starch straws, S-SO had the strongest hydrogen bond interaction (3289 cm-1) and relaxation time (0.96 ms). The S-CO had the highest relative crystallinity (16.82 %) and degree of double helix (1.535), hence resulting in the lowest water absorption and solubility values, the highest flexural strength (23.43 MPa), the highest ΔT value (9.93 °C) and ΔH value (4.79 J/g). S-RO had the highest thermal transition temperatures.

Preparation and properties of films loaded with cellulose nanocrystals stabilized Thymus vulgaris essential oil Pickering emulsion based on modified tapioca starch/polyvinyl alcohol

Pickering emulsions were prepared by stabilizing thymus vulgaris essential oil (TEVO) with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), which formed composite films by loading the emulsions into modified tapioca/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based films. The results showed that the 1.0 % CNCs-15 % TEVO emulsion had optimal stability and smaller particle size. The emulsion increased the thickness of the composite film in the form of solid material additions (thickness, 0.062-0.099 mm), which opacity given the laminating film's superior UV-blocking ability compared to blank film. The emulsion plasticizing effect enhanced the film's elongation at break (EAB, 123-159 %). In addition, due to the hydrophobicity and influencing the diffusion path of water molecules in the emulsion, the denser microstructure composite film had a lower water vapor transmission coefficient (WVP, 6.22 × 10-11-5.35 × 10-11g∙cm/cm2∙s∙Pa) to impede moisture penetration. Meanwhile, the composite film can effectively maintain the color and inhibit the growth of microorganisms to extend the storage time of fish fillets.

Incorporation of cellulose nanocrystals to improve the physicochemical and bioactive properties of pectin-konjac glucomannan composite films containing clove essential oil

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) isolated from cotton in augmenting pectin (PEC)/konjac glucomannan (KGM) composite films containing clove essential oil (CEO) for food packaging application. The effects of CNC dosage on film properties were examined by analyzing the rheology of film-forming solutions and the mechanical, barrier, antimicrobial, and CEO-release properties of the films. Rheological and FTIR analysis revealed the enhanced interactions among the film components after CNC incorporation due to its high aspect ratio and abundant hydroxyl groups, which can also prevent CEO droplet aggregation, contributing to form a compact microstructure as confirmed by SEM and 3D surface topography observations. Consequently, the addition of CNC reinforced the polysaccharide matrix, increasing the tensile strength of the films and improving their barrier properties to water vapor. More importantly, antibacterial, controlled release and kinetic simulation experiments proved that the addition of CNC could further slow down the release rate of CEO, prolonging the antimicrobial properties of the films. PEC/KGM/CEO composite films with 15 wt% CNC was found to have relatively best comprehensive properties, which was also most effective in delaying deterioration of grape quality during the storage of 9 days at 25 °C.

Zinc oxide nanoparticle-reinforced pectin/starch functionalized films: A sustainable solution for biodegradable packaging

Environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastic pollutants adversely affects various ecosystems. This study proposes the development of novel functional and biodegradable films based on corn starch (CST) and pectin (PEC) containing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) from the casting method. The films exhibited processability, transparency, low water vapor permeation, and desirable mechanical properties for food packaging and coating applications. The ZnONPs acted as a plasticizer, enhancing the film elongation at the break, increasing the pec25-1 (PEC 25 wt% and ZnONPs 1 wt%) elongation from 79.85 to 162.32 %. The improved film elasticity supported by ZnONPs reduced the material stiffness. However, the films still demonstrated an average tensile strength (0.69 MPa) 17-fold higher than the tensile strength (0.04 MPa) of the non-biodegradable commercial film based on poly(vinyl chloride). Furthermore, the ZnONPs enhanced the UV-blocking capabilities of the films, leading to wettable materials with water contact angles lower than 90°. The films showed high biodegradation rates under natural disposal conditions. The results indicated that the pec25-1/ZnONPs film is a promising eco-friendly coating in food preservation due to its biodegradability, suitable mechanical properties, low water vapor permeability, and UV-blocking properties.

Nanoscale Pickering emulsion food preservative films/coatings: Compositions, preparations, influencing factors, and applications

Pickering emulsion (PE) technology effectively addresses the issues of poor compatibility and low retention of hydrophobic active ingredients in food packaging. Nonetheless, it is important to recognize that each stage of the preparation process for PE films/coatings (PEFCs) can significantly influence their functional properties. With the fundamental considerations of environmental friendliness and human safety, this review extensively explores the potential of raw materials for PEFC and introduces the preparation methods of nanoparticles, emulsification technology, and film-forming techniques. The critical factors that impact the performance of PEFC during the preparation process are analyzed to enhance food preservation effectiveness. Moreover, the latest advancements in PE packaging across diverse food applications are summarized, along with prospects for innovative food packaging materials. Finally, the preservation mechanism and application safety have been systematically elucidated. The study revealed that the PEFCs provide structural flexibility, where designable nanoparticles offer unique functional properties for intelligent control over active ingredient release. The selection of the dispersed and continuous phases, along with component proportions, can be customized for specific food characteristics and storage conditions. By employing suitable preparation and emulsification techniques, the stability of the emulsion can be improved, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the films/coatings in preserving food. Including additional substances broadens the functionality of degradable materials. The PE packaging technology provides a safe and innovative solution for extending the shelf life and enhancing the quality of food products by protecting and releasing active components.

Synergistic effect and mechanism of cellulose nanocrystals and calcium ion on the film-forming properties of pea protein isolate

The current serious environmental problems have greatly encouraged the design and development of food packaging materials with environmental protection, green, and safety. This study aims to explore the synergistic effect and corresponding mechanism of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and CaCl2 to enhance the film-forming properties of pea protein isolate (PPI). The combination of 0.5 % CNC and 4.5 mM CaCl2 resulted in a 76.6 % increase in tensile strength when compared with pure PPI-based film. Meanwhile, this combination effectively improved the barrier performance, surface hydrophobicity, water resistance, and biodegradability of PPI-based film. The greater crystallinity, viscoelasticity, lower water mobility, and improved protein spatial conformation were also observed in CNC/CaCl2 composite film. Compared with the control, the main degradation temperature of composite film was increased from 326.23 °C to 335.43 °C. The CNC chains bonded with amino acid residue of pea protein at specific sites via non-covalent forces (e.g., hydrogen bonds, Van der Waals forces). Meanwhile, Ca2+ promoted the ordered protein aggregation at suitable rate and degree, accompanied by the formation of more disulfide bonds. Furthermore, proper Ca2+ could strengthen the cross-linking and interaction between CNC and protein, thereby establishing a stable network structure. The prepared composite films are expected to be used for strawberry preservation.

Characterization and bio-functional performance of chitosan/poly (vinyl alcohol)/trans-cinnamaldehyde ternary biopolymeric films

Bioactive films of chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/trans-cinnamaldehyde (CIN) were prepared by co-blending, and the impact of varying concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 %) of CIN on the physicochemical properties of the ternary films was investigated. The ATR/FT-IR analysis revealed that the bioactive film is modulated by Schiff base (C=N) and hydrogen-bond interactions of CS, PVA, and CIN. Inclusion of CIN into the film improved mechanical properties with tensile strength increased from 0.5 % (68.52 MPa) to 1.5 % (76.95 MPa). The presence of CIN within the CS/PVA film also remarkably affected oxygen permeability and improved light transmittance. Additionally, the water barrier and contact angle properties were improved with increasing CIN content. The morphology of the CIN-containing films appeared non-stratified and dense when observed by SEM and AFM. Moreover, spore germination and in vitro assays confirmed strong antifungal activity of the CIN-containing film against P. italicum (~90 %) and B. cinerea (~85 %). The ternary films also exhibited excellent antioxidant activity, as evidenced by DPPH radical scavenging activity (31.43 %) and ferric reducing power (OD700 nm = 0.172) at the highest CIN concentration tested. Thus, this bioactive CIN films are proposed as a versatile packaging material for the food industry.

Nanocellulose-stabilized Pickering emulsions: Fabrication, stabilization, and food applications

Pickering emulsions have been widely studied due to their good stability and potential applications. Nanocellulose including cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), and bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNFs) has emerged as sustainable stabilizers/emulsifiers in food-related Pickering emulsions due to their favorable properties such as renewability, low toxicity, amphiphilicity, biocompatibility, and high aspect ratio. Nanocellulose can be widely obtained from different sources and extraction methods and can effectively stabilize Pickering emulsions via the irreversible adsorption onto oil-water interface. The synergistic effects of nanocellulose and other substances can further enhance the interfacial networks. The nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsions have potential food-related applications in delivery systems, food packaging materials, and fat substitutes. Nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsions as 3D printing inks exhibit good injectable and gelling properties and are promising to print spatial architectures. In the future, the utilization of biomass waste and the development of "green" and facile extraction methods for nanocellulose production deserve more attention. The stability of nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsions in multi-component food systems and at various conditions is an utmost challenge. Moreover, the case-by-case studies on the potential safety issues of nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsions need to be carried out with the standardized assessment procedures. In this review, we highlight key fundamental work and recent reports on nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsion systems. The sources and extraction of nanocellulose and the fabrication of nanocellulose-based Pickering emulsions are briefly summarized. Furthermore, the synergistic stability and food-related applications of nanocellulose-stabilized Pickering emulsions are spotlighted.

Fortification of polysaccharide-based packaging films and coatings with essential oils: A review of their preparation and use in meat preservation

As the demand for botanical food additives and eco-friendly food packaging materials grows, the use of essential oils, edible biodegradable films and coatings are becoming more popular in packaging. In this review, we discussed the recent research trends in the use of natural essential oils, as well as polysaccharide-based coatings and films: from the composition of the substrates to preparing formulations for the production of film-forming technologies. Our review emphasized the functional properties of polysaccharide-based edible films that contain plant essential oils. The interactions between essential oils and other ingredients in edible films and coatings including polysaccharides, lipids, and proteins were discussed along with effects on film physical properties, essential oil release, their active role in meat preservation. We presented the opportunities and challenges related to edible films and coatings including essential oils to increase their industrial value and inform the development of edible biodegradable packaging, bio-based functional materials, and innovative food preservation technologies.

Processing, Properties, Modifications, and Environmental Impact of Nanocellulose/Biopolymer Composites: A Review

The increasing concerns about plastic pollution and climate change have encouraged research into bioderived and biodegradable materials. Much attention has been focused on nanocellulose due to its abundance, biodegradability, and excellent mechanical properties. Nanocellulose-based biocomposites are a viable option to fabricate functional and sustainable materials for important engineering applications. This review addresses the most recent advances in composites, with a particular focus on biopolymer matrices such as starch, chitosan, polylactic acid, and polyvinyl alcohol. Additionally, the effects of the processing methods, the influence of additives, and the outturn of nanocellulose surface modification on the biocomposite's properties are outlined in detail. Moreover, the change in the composites' morphological, mechanical, and other physiochemical properties due to reinforcement loading is reviewed. Further, mechanical strength, thermal resistance, and the oxygen-water vapor barrier properties are enhanced with the incorporation of nanocellulose into biopolymer matrices. Furthermore, the life cycle assessment of nanocellulose and composites were considered to analyze their environmental profile. The sustainability of this alternative material is compared through different preparation routes and options.

Ultrasonication significantly enhances grafting efficiency of chitosan-ferulic acid conjugate and improves its film properties under Fenton system

Ultrasonication (US)-assisted Fenton-system (US-Fenton) with different US time was developed for synthesizing chitosan (CS)-ferulic acid (FA) conjugates. The optimal US-Fenton for a suitable time was selected for preparing a film with CS-FA conjugate and its structural, functional, rheological, and physical properties were also investigated. Compared with Fenton-system, US-Fenton enhanced the grafting ratio of the conjugates, which increased firstly and then decreased as US time. The conjugate obtained by US-Fenton for 1 min (FUS1) possessed the highest grafting ratio (121.28 mg FA/g) and its grafting time was also shortened from 12 h to 1 min contrasted with Fenton grafted method. Structural characterization results showed that FA was conjugated on CS via ester and amide bonds with decreased crystallinity. Scanning electron microscopy and molecular weight analysis indicated that the degradation degree of CS-FA conjugates increased with US time. The DPPH and ABTS radical-scavenging activities of FUS1 were the closest to ascorbic acid, and it also showed the best antibacterial effect among the test conjugates. Accordingly, FUS1 was selected to obtain the film for contrasting with CS film. FUS1 film solution exhibited a decreased viscosity. In comparison to CS film, UV transmittance of FUS1 film approached zero, and its moisture, oxygen, and carbon dioxide permeabilities significantly decreased (P < 0.05). Moreover, its water solubility and tensile strength increased by 58.09% and 25.72% than those of CS film, respectively. Therefore, US-Fenton for 1 min could be a promising method for efficiently preparing active food package materials and FUS1 film possessed broad application prospects.

Effects of Cross-Linking on Physicochemical and Film Properties of Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera G.) Seed Starch

Lotus seed starch was cross-linked using sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) in varying amounts (1, 3, and 5%), and its rheological, pasting, thermal, and physicochemical properties were investigated. These cross-linked lotus seed starches (CL-LS-1, CL-LS-3, CL-LS-5) were also used to produce films (CL-LSFs), which were then examined for their mechanical characteristics, water vapor permeability, moisture content, opacity, thickness, and water solubility. After cross-linking, the solubility, amylose content, and swelling power of all the starch samples decreased. Cross-linking resulted in an increased pasting temperature, while peak viscosity (PV) decreased, with CL-LS-5 exhibiting the lowest peak viscosity (1640.22 MPa·s). In comparison to native starch, the thermal characteristics of CL-LS demonstrated greater gelatinization temperatures (T_o, T_p, T_c) and gelatinization enthalpy (ΔH_gel). The gelatinization enthalpy of CL-LS varied between 152.70 and 214.16 J/g, while for native LS the value was 177.91 J/g. Lower moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor permeability were observed in the CL-LSFs. However, the cross-linking modification did not produce much effect on the film thickness. The highest tensile strength (12.52 MPa) and lowest elongation at break (26.11%) were found in CL-LSF-5. Thus, the starch films’ barrier and mechanical qualities were enhanced by cross-linking.
