Abstract
The World Health Organization recently presented the priorities for tackling abuse of older people in a coordinated and strategic way. However, data on the forensic scenario is still lacking. In this context, the aim of the present work was to provide a comprehensive literature review of this inherently complex phenomenon in the post-mortem setting, in order to better characterize it from a forensic point of view. A comprehensive literature search was performed in three electronic databases following the PRISMA guidelines. Sociodemographic and medical data of victims and perpetrators, post-mortem data, types of abuse and risk factors were extracted from non-aggregated data. Forty-eight papers dealing with abuse in the post-mortem setting were included, with a predominance of case reports and case series. The review showed that neglect was the most common type of abuse and victims are predominantly older women who are abused in a domestic setting by trusted family member. To generate more and better data, expanded research in the forensic field requires standardized methods and the raise of professional awareness about abuse of older people.

Abstract
Otitis media, commonly known as middle ear inflammation, is among one of the most common maladies and results in significant morbidity such as loss of hearing. In view of the bacteria invasion such as Staphylococcus aureus causes the majority forms of otitis media, drug treatment generally uses antibacterial by topical or systematic approach. However, the effectiveness of antibacterial is diminishing because of the rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. Here, we designed and fabricated a silver nanoparticle (AgNPs)-based multicomponent hybrid nanocomposite termed as TSIIA @ CS/Lys @ AgNPs, which was comprised of a AgNPs core, a chitosan (CS) or lysozyme (Lys) middle layer, and a Tanshinone IIA (TSIIA) inclusion outlayer. Coating of CS or Lys to AgNPs through electrostatic interaction probably produced a core-shell nanocomplex resembling the endocarp of walnut. This design could reduce the dosage of AgNPs while maintaining antibacterial activity possibly due to the favorable interactions between nanocomplex and bacteria. The deposition of Chinese herb active component TSIIA by inclusion complexation formed the out layer of hybrid nanocomposite towards an improved antibacterial performance, which showed a therapeutic effect against acute otitis media of guinea pig comparable to the clinical commercial-used ofloxacin administrated by injection. The hybrid nanocomposite, when dispersed in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (PLGA/NMP) solution as an in-situ organogel, not only maintained the therapeutic effectiveness, but also possessed the advantage of lower injection frequency compared with solution formulation. In addition, no obvious toxicity to the basilar membrane and epithelia tissue was observed after the healthy guinea pigs were treated with hybrid nanocomposite or organogel. This study provides a promising strategy to develop hybrid nanocomposite with enhanced antibacterial efficacy and also opens a new way for the establishment of efficient therapeutic systems with reduced administration frequency as substitute of antibiotics to treat otitis media.

Abstract
Physical abuse of the elderly induces a massive primed neutrophil infiltration into the lung and liver through chemotaxis by interleukin (IL)-8, similar to cases of traumatic or hemorrhagic shock. Here, we used immunohistochemical analyses to investigate this infiltration in cases of physically abused children. In addition, we examined the expression of neutrophil elastase (NE) as the inflammatory mediator and α1-antitrypsin (AAT) as the elastase inhibitor. The number of neutrophils in the abuse cases was increased significantly in the heart, lung, liver, and kidney, compared with that of control cases. IL-8-positive cells and NE-positive cells in all organs of abuse cases were significantly greater than those in control cases. Large quantities of oxidized AAT, which fails to inactivate NE and results in tissue damage, was detected in the liver of abuse cases. Neutrophil infiltration showed positive correlation with the degree of systemic accumulation of non-fatal injuries caused by repetitive abusive behavior. Although further investigation using more autopsy samples is necessary, results of our preliminary study indicate that massive neutrophil infiltration induced by IL-8 in multiple organs is a new complementary diagnostic indicator of physical abuse in children. Moreover, the demonstration of NE-positive cells and oxidized AAT provides firm evidence of tissue damage.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-8 has been suggested to be a positive regulator of myelination in the central nervous system, in addition to its principal role as a chemokine for neutrophils. Immunostaining for beta-amyloid precursor protein (AβPP) is an effective tool for detecting traumatic axonal injury, although AβPP immunoreactivity can also indicate axonal injury due to hypoxic causes. In this study, we examined IL-8 and AβPP immunoreactivity in sections of corpus callosum obtained from deceased patients with blunt head injury and from equivalent control tissue. AβPP immunoreactivity was detected in injured axons, such as axonal bulbs and varicose axons, in 24 of 44 head injury cases. These AβPP immunoreactive cases had survived for more than 3h. The AβPP immunostaining pattern can be classified into two types: traumatic (Pattern 1) and non-traumatic (Pattern 2) axonal injuries, which we described previously [Hayashi et al. Int. J. Legal Med. 129 (2015) 1085-1090]. Three of 44 control cases also showed AβPP immunoreactive injured axons as Pattern 2. In contrast, IL-8 immunoreactivity was detected in 7 AβPP immunoreactive and in 2 non-AβPP immunoreactive head injury cases, but was not detected in any of the 44 control cases, including the 3 AβPP immunoreactive control cases. The IL-8 immunoreactive cases had survived from 3 to 24 days, whereas those cases who survived less than 3 days (n=29) and who survived 90 days (n=1) were not IL-8 immunoreactive. Moreover, IL-8 was detected as Pattern 1 axons only. In addition, double immunofluorescence analysis showed that IL-8 is expressed by oligodendrocytes surrounding injured axons. In conclusion, our results suggest that immunohistochemical detection of IL-8 may be useful as a complementary diagnostic marker of traumatic axonal injury.

Abstract
The ability to determine vitality and estimate the survival period after a wound is critical in routine forensic practice. The mRNA levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were examined using quantitative real-time RT-PCR to determine the age of a wound. Furthermore, the colocalization of them with Macrophage Marker, respectively, was detected by double immunofluorescence, and a standardized rat model of skeletal muscle contusion was established. In the antemortem contused groups, a large number of macrophages showed positive staining for MMP-2 and TIMP-2, and the expression of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 mRNA increased sharply at 3 days postinjury, with relative quantities of 5.75 and 2.98. No samples in the other groups showed relative quantities of >5.75 and 2.98; therefore, relative quantities exceeding 5.75 and 2.98 were strongly indicated 3 days after contusion. In addition, there was a significant decrease in the relative quantity in the postmortem contused groups, indicating that they were useful for diagnosing vitality.

Abstract
The processing parameters of pump speed, inlet air temperature, outlet air temperature and homogenization pressure were evaluated. Encapsulation efficiency is high with a satisfied releasing rate. Then, acute otitis media (AOM) animal model was built and diet containing orange peel essential oil microcapsules were administrated to AOM animals. Pharmacological test showed that orange peel essential oil treatment could decrease serum and cochlea malondialdehyde (MDA), immunoglobulins A (IgA), immunoglobulins G (IgG), immunoglobulins M (IgM) levels and increase antioxidant enzymes activities. It can be concluded that orange peel essential oil treatment could decrease oxidative injury in acute otitis media rats.

Abstract
In fatalities with multiple traumatic injuries, it is important to determine the severity of trauma, the main damaged organ, and the antemortem pathophysiological condition. We examined 63 cases within 48 h of the postmortem interval, which included assaults, slips and falls and falls from heights, traffic accidents, and sharp instrumental injuries. Immunohistochemically, each kidney was stained against hemoglobin (Hb), myoglobin (Mb), superoxide dismutase (SOD), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 150 kDa oxygen regulated protein (ORP150), pulmonary surfactant A (SP-A), and liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP). Bleeding or circulatory failure induced ORP150, 8-OHdG, and L-FABP in the kidney. Statistical analysis of the immunoreactivity revealed that in battered and/or abused cases, Hb could be considered a specific marker. Hb and Mb were observed in the cases with general severe trauma, such as slips and falls and falls from heights. In traffic accidents, ORP150 could reflect general circulatory failure with bleeding. SP-A was observed in the cases with severe thoracic injuries, such as lung injuries and multiple thoracic fractures. L-FABP appeared in cases with renal circulatory failure as well as renal injury. These findings suggest that immunohistochemical observation of the kidneys could be a useful tool in determining several key factors, such as the severity of injury, the specific damaged organ, and the pathological condition after injury.
