Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs) are two classifications of environmental pollutants that have become a source of health concerns. As a result, there have been several efforts towards the development of analytical methods that are efficient and affordable that can sense these pollutants. In recent decades, a wide range of techniques has been developed for the detection of pollutants present in the environment. Among these different techniques, the use of semiconductor nanomaterials, also known as quantum dots, has continued to gain more attention in sensing because of the optical properties that make them useful in the identification and differentiation of pollutants in water bodies. Reported studies have shown great improvement in the sensing of these pollutants. This review article starts with an introduction on two types of organic pollutants, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-aromatic explosives. This is then followed by different quantum dots used in sensing applications. Then, a detailed discussion on different groups of quantum dots, such as carbon-based quantum dots, binary and ternary quantum dots and quantum dot composites, and their application in the sensing of organic pollutants is presented. Different studies on the comparison of water-soluble quantum dots and organic-soluble quantum dots of a fluorescence sensing mechanism are reviewed. Then, different approaches on the improvement of their sensitivity and selectivity in addition to challenges associated with some of these approaches are also discussed. The review is concluded by looking at different mechanisms in the sensing of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-aromatic compounds.

Abstract
Graphene oxide is well known for its adsorption properties with aromatic compounds. In this study, graphene oxide and eco-friendly ternary CuInS2/ZnS QDs were used to prepare graphene oxide-qunatum dots (GO-QDs) nanocomposite via in-situ method. The composite was characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The effect of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the PL properties of the nanocomposite was investigated. The results showed that the addition of PAHs increased the PL intensity of the nanocomposite. This "turn-on" fluorescence approach can be used for the successful detection of PAHs in aqueous media.

Abstract
Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are bright fluorophores that have significant utility for imaging and sensing applications. Core QDs are often employed in chemosensing via redox processes that modulates their fluorescence in the presence of an analyte. However, such particles lack robust surface passivation and generally contain a sizable portion of nonfluorescent QDs, which is detrimental to the detection limit. We investigated an approach to "turn on" non-fluorescent core QDs by lightly overcoating them with a thin shell of a higher bandgap semiconductor. The shell augments the population of sensing chromophores and increases the emission lifetime; however, it simultaneously mollifies redox processes that are responsible for analyte sensitivity to begin with. This balancing act was successfully applied to enhance the sensitivity of CdZnS/ZnS QDs towards 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). Unexpectedly, it was found that CdZnS/ZnS QDs with very thick shells retained substantial sensitivity to TNT. This observation may be due to close coupling of the reduced substrate with the QD hole that is enabled by the near-degeneracy of holes in the core CdZnS and ZnS shell. The ability of core/shell QDs to retain substantial reducing power may have implications for other applications that can benefit from the enhanced stability of robust core/shell nanomaterials.

Abstract
A novel method for turn-off sensing 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethylene (FOX-7) in aqueous medium was first proposed based on the inner filter effect (IFE) of FOX-7 on the fluorescence of molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs). Water-soluble MoS2 QDs as the fluorophore were prepared by the simple hydrothermal method. The morphology, structure, composition and optical properties of the prepared MoS2 QDs were characterized by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra. The results showed that the MoS2 QDs had good water dispersibility and emitted strong photoluminescence with a particle size of 2 nm. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the fluorescence signal of MoS2 QDs was quenched in the concentrations range of FOX-7 (0.5-100 μM) and the limit of detection (LOD) of the sensor was 0.19 μM. The method had been applied to analyze the real water samples with good selectivity and stability. Moreover, the quenching mechanism was studied systematically by the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), UV-vis absorption spectra, fluorescence lifetime, and Stern-Volmer equation, which had been proved to be static quenching. The fluorescence quenching mechanism is mainly IFE and electron transfer.

Abstract
Novel fluorescent anthracene-decorated cyclotri- and cyclotetraphosphazenes (5 and 6) are designed and synthesized, and their chemosensor behaviors against nitroaromatic compounds are examined by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies for addressing the sensors with cyclophosphazenes for 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene detection. The fluorescence intensities of (5 and 6) are found to be selectively quenched by only 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene through the non-covalent π⋯π stacking interactions between anthracene-substituted cyclophosphazenes and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene. In addition, cyclic voltammetry and theoretical calculation of novel sensor systems are studied. The proposed fluorescent sensor systems are critical in terms of practical detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene.

Abstract
We present the enhanced photoluminescence (PL) of a corrugated Al2O3 film enabled by colloidal CdSe quantum dots. The colloidal CdSe quantum dots are fabricated directly on a corrugated Al2O3 substrate using an electrochemical deposition (ECD) method in a microfluidic system. The photoluminescence is excited by using a 150 nm diameter ultraviolet laser spot of a scanning near-field optical microscope. Owing to the electron transfer from the conduction band of the CdSe quantum dots to that of Al2O3, the enhanced photoluminescence effect is observed, which results from the increase in the recombination rate of electrons and holes on the Al2O3 surface and the reduction in the fluorescence of the CdSe quantum dots. A periodically-fluctuating fluorescent spectrum was exhibited because of the periodical wire-like corrugated Al2O3 surface serving as an optical grating. The spectral topographic map around the fluorescence peak from the Al2O3 areas covered with CdSe quantum dots was unique and attributed to the uniform deposition of CdSe QDs on the corrugated Al2O3 surface. We believe that the microfluidic ECD system and the surface enhanced fluorescence method described in this paper have potential applications in forming uniform optoelectronic films of colloidal quantum dots with controllable QD spacing and in boosting the fluorescent efficiency of weak PL devices.
