Abstract
The change in larval body length of necrophagous flies during their development is a key indicator for estimating larval age. However, existing forensic entomological models have limitations in this regard. In this study, a logistic algorithm was used to establish a general model for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin) using larval body length. The new model was used to simulate the relationship between larval body length and developmental time of eight species of necrophagous flies. The model parameters of body length variation with developmental time of the different species were calculated. Computer software was developed based on the established logistic model. The advantage of the new model is that each parameter has a biological meaning and can be used to estimate the age of larvae at any temperature and any larval body length. Cross-validation of the model showed that the overall mean accuracy of the fitted growth curves for the eight necrophagous fly larvae was 82.7%, the mean accuracy of age extrapolations for seven necrophagous fly species ranged from 76.8% to 92.9%, while the accuracy of age extrapolations for only one species was lower (i.e., 63.3%). This study provides a new method to estimate the PMImin based on larval body length, and the developed computer software will facilitate its application in forensic entomology.

Abstract
Chrysomya nigripes Aubertin, 1932, is a Calliphoridae species that colonize the carcass after the bloat phase and remains for long periods. Some early sarcosaprophagous insects complete one generation of development and are no longer associated with the corpse and surrounding environment, while C. nigripes larvae and pupae remain, providing a basis for the estimation of the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin) for highly decomposed or skeletonized carcasses. However, data on the growth and development of this species are not yet complete. As a result, we studied the developmental patterns of C. nigripes at eight constant temperatures ranging from 16-37 °C and constructed various developmental models, including the isomorphen diagram, isomegalen diagram, linear thermal summation model, nonlinear thermodynamic Optim SSI model, and logistic regression model. Chrysomya nigripes could not complete the entire developmental process at 16 °C, although it could be completed at other temperatures. The mean developmental times (±SD) of C. nigripes from egg to adult at 19 °C, 22 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C, 34 °C, and 37 °C were 644.9 ± 36.8 h, 422.9 ± 20.1 h, 323.1 ± 13.9 h, 246.6 ± 11.2 h, 202.5 ± 1.8 h, 191.5 ± 3.8 h, and 191.8 ± 2.0 h, respectively. The thermal summation constant (K) and lower critical thermal threshold (TL) derived from the linear thermal summation models were 4083.00 ± 293.39 degree hours and 12.52 ± 0.83 °C, respectively. In addition, TL, intrinsic optimum temperature (TΦ), and upper critical thermal threshold (TH) estimated by the optimized nonlinear thermodynamic Optim SSI model were 15.76 °C, 24.88 °C, and 38.15 °C, respectively. This study provides more comprehensive developmental data of C. nigripes for PMImin estimation.

Abstract
Flesh flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) are regarded as significant in medical and veterinary entomology, and their development models can be utilized as considerable markers to ascertain the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). In this research, we explored the growth cycle and larval body length of Sarcophaga crassipalpis Macquart 1839 (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) reared under variable temperatures ranging from 15.7 to 31.1 °C, with an average of 24.55 °C and relative humidity ranges from 31.4 to 82.8% and at six fixed temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30, 32, and then 35 °C. Moreover, pteridine from the head was used to assess adult age grading. Our results allowed us to provide three development models: the isomorphen chart, the isomegalen chart, and the thermal summation models. The time taken for S. crassipalpis to complete its development from larviposition to adult emergence at constant temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30, 32, and 35 °C was 1256.3 ± 124.2, 698.6 ± 15.1, 481.8 ± 35.7, 366.0 ± 13.5, and 295.8 ± 20.5 h, respectively, except 35 °C, where all pupae were unable to attain adulthood. They lasted 485.8 ± 5.4 h under variable temperatures. The minimum developmental limit (D0) temperature and the thermal summation constant (K) of S. crassipalpis were 9.31 ± 0.55 °C and 7290.0 ± 388.4 degree hours, respectively. The increase in pteridine content exhibited variations across different temperatures. There was quite a considerable distinction in the pteridine contents of male and female S. crassipalpis at 15 °C (p = 0.0075) and 25 °C (p = 0.0213). At 32 °C and variable temperatures, the pteridine content between female and male S. crassipalpis was not statistically divergent. However, temperature and gender remain the main factors influencing the pteridine content in the head of S. crassipalpis. We aim to provide detailed developmental data on S. crassipalpis that can be used as a valuable resource for future research and PMI estimation.

Abstract
Forensic entomology is a branch of forensic science that incorporates insects as a part of solving crime. Insect-based evidence recovered at a crime scene can be used to estimate the minimum postmortem interval, determine if a carcass/corpse has been relocated, and contribute to the cause and manner of death. The current review summarises the stepwise usage of forensic entomology methods at a crime scene and in the laboratory, including specimen collection and rearing, identification, xenobiotic detection, documentation, and referencing previous research and casework. It also provides three standards for the collection of insects when attending a crime scene. The Gold standard attributes to a forensic entomologist (FE) who is likely to be well-trained attending a scene. The subsequent standards (Silver and Bronze) have been added because the authors believe that this information is currently missing in the literature. The purpose is so that an attending crime scene agent/proxy with some basic knowledge and some simple tools can recover almost all the insect information required by an FE to make the best estimation of the minimum postmortem interval.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study is based on blow fly samples collected from 8 medico-legal cases in Tamil Nadu, India. The fly life stages were identified and the consistency of minimum post-mortem intervals (PMImin) estimated by different thermal summation-based methods was assessed. METHODS PMImin of 8 medico-legal cases was estimated using six different thermal summation constants and lower developmental temperatures that are based on C. megacephala and C. rufifacies developmental data. Limits of agreement (LoA), intra class correlation coefficient (ICC) between PMImin values and margin of error of mean of difference between PMImin values were calculated. RESULTS Intra-class correlation between the PMImin values estimated using different thermal summation constants based on C. megacephala ranged between 0.89 and 0.98 and coefficient of determination ranged between 0.93 and 0.98. Intra-class correlation between the PMImin values estimated using different thermal summation constants based on C. rufifacies ranged between 0.91 and 0.99 and coefficient of determination ranged between 0.95 and 0.99. The mean difference of PMImin values estimated using different thermal summation methods based on C. megacephala ranged between 1.8 hr and 6.6hr and margin of error ranged between 2.51 and 6.93hr. The mean difference of PMImin values estimated using different thermal summation methods based on C. rufifacies ranged between 3.33 and 31.33hr and margin of error ranged between 4.66 and 32hr. CONCLUSION Consistency of PMImin values estimated by different thermal summation methods was good to excellent. Thermal summation constants useful in estimation of PMImin with lowest mean difference and margin of error were described.

Abstract
Calliphora grahami (Aldrich, 1930) (Diptera: calliphoridae) is a forensically important blow fly that is widely distributed across Asia, North America, Russia, and Mexico. Calliphora grahami is frequently found on corpses during the spring, autumn, and winter seasons. It is among the early colonizers of cadavers during the cold season, and sometimes, the only necrophagous blow fly on cadavers. Therefore, this species is of forensic significance, although very few studies have explored the application of its intrapuparial age for PMI estimation. This study aimed to examine the intrapuparial development of C. grahami and establish a method for estimating its intrapuparial age. Herein, the C. grahami puparia were studied under six different temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25, and 28°C) for the intrapuparial age estimation, and a total of 5776 puparia were sampled. The morphological changes were divided into 11 stages based on the 1) development of legs and wings, 2) differentiation of the head, thorax, and abdomen, 3) growth and color of the bristles, and 4) color changes of the compound eyes. The corresponding time of each stage was determined. Moreover, the observation and classification of individual morphological features, including compound eyes, antennae, mouthparts, thorax, abdomen, legs, and wings was used to improve the precision of intrapuparial age estimation. The findings of this study provide important information on the use of C. grahami intrapuparia to estimate the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin).

Abstract
Fannia pusio (Wiedemann, 1830) is a species belonging to the family Fanniidae, which is of great forensic, sanitary, and veterinary interest. The behavioral peculiarities of this species, depending on the temperature at which it is found, may provide additional information for
future research. The application of entomology in the forensic field has focused especially on the early colonizing taxa of corpses that are in the initial stage of decomposition. However, species occurring at more advanced stages can contribute to further knowledge, as is the case with
F. pusio. In addition, the species has the ability to colonize buried corpses that are inaccessible to larger dipterans. On the other hand, the sanitary and veterinary interest of this species is due to the performance of females as phoretic hosts of Dermatobia hominis eggs that
cause myiasis in both animals and humans. In the current study, the behavior of F. pusio was observed at a temperature range of 5°C to 40°C. We found that its viability range is limited between 15°C and 35°C; above and below these temperatures, adults survive but oviposition
does not take place. Data collected by statistical analysis were subsequently applied to calculate the post-mortem interval (PMI) using isomorphen and isomegalen diagrams. The results show a directly proportional relationship between growth rate and temperature increase. However, a slowdown
in the growth of individuals was observed at extreme temperatures (5°C and 35°C). The results shown in this manuscript, together with the existing bibliography of other species, help to broaden the knowledge of F. pusio, which has not been studied in such depth until now.

Abstract
Philornis flies are the major cause of myiasis in nestlings of Neotropical birds, being of major concern in geographically-restricted and endangered bird species. Despite its relevance for the conservation of birds, there is little information about the environmental dimensions determining Philornis spp. geographical range. By using maximum entropy, we identified for the first time the macro-environmental variables constraining the abiotic niche of the P. torquans complex in South America, and provided a model map of its potential distribution based on environmental suitability. We identified the minimum temperature of the coldest month as the most relevant variable, associated with the largest decrease in habitat suitability in Brazil and northern South America. Furthermore, the mean temperature of the warmest quarter limited suitability mostly along with the Andean range. In addition, humidity and moisture are influential factors in most of Argentina, northern Chile, and coastal Peru. The geographical projection suggests that environments in most of central-eastern Argentina, and in a broad area in central Chile, are suitable for the presence of the P. torquans complex. Besides providing information about the ecology of Philornis spp., this study represents a tool for bird conservation and a reference for future work on the distribution of this genus.

Abstract
Reliability of forensic entomology analyses to produce relevant information to a given case requires an understanding of the underlying arthropod population(s) of interest and the factors contributing to variability. Common traits for analyses are affected by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. One trait of interest in forensic investigations has been species-specific temperature-dependent growth rates. Recent work indicates sexual dimorphism may be important in the analysis of such traits and related genetic markers of age. However, studying sexual dimorphic patterns of gene expression throughout immature development in wild-type insects can be difficult due to a lack of genetic tools, and the limits of most sex-determination mechanisms. Chrysomya rufifacies, however, is a particularly tractable system to address these issues as it has a monogenic sex determination system, meaning females have only a single-sex of offspring throughout their life. Using modified breeding procedures (to ensure single-female egg clutches) and transcriptomics, we investigated sexual dimorphism in development rate and gene expression. Females develop slower than males (9 h difference from egg to eclosion respectively) even at 30°C, with an average egg-to-eclosion time of 225 h for males and 234 h for females. Given that many key genes rely on sex-specific splicing for the development and maintenance of sexually dimorphic traits, we used a transcriptomic approach to identify different expression of gene splice variants. We find that 98.4% of assembled nodes exhibited sex-specific, stage-specific, to sex-by-stage specific patterns of expression. However, the greatest signal in the expression data is differentiation by developmental stage, indicating that sexual dimorphism in gene expression during development may not be investigatively important and that markers of age may be relatively independent of sex. Subtle differences in these gene expression patterns can be detected as early as 4 h post-oviposition, and 12 of these nodes demonstrate homology with key Drosophila sex determination genes, providing clues regarding the distinct sex determination mechanism of C. rufifacies. Finally, we validated the transcriptome analyses through qPCR and have identified five genes that are developmentally informative within and between sexes.

Abstract
Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart), the hairy maggot blow fly, is of great importance for the field of forensic entomology due to its habit as an early colonizer of decomposing vertebrate remains and myiasis producer. Development studies on this species have been conducted in scattered regions of the world, using types of tissue from several species of animals as a rearing medium. Despite the commonality of C. rufifacies in Sri Lanka, developmental studies have never been performed in this region. As well, the effects of diet on development have not been tested. In the current study, C. rufifacies immatures were reared on skeletal muscle, liver, and heart from domestic swine, with flies from colonies maintained at 25 and 28°C. The minimum time needed to complete each stage at 25°C on liver (224.14 h) was fastest followed by skeletal muscle (249.33 h) and heart (251.64 h) respectively, whereas at 28°C, fly development was quickest on heart muscle (178.27 h) followed by liver (178.50 h) and skeletal muscle (186.17 h) respectively. A significant difference in total development time was determined for temperature, while the rearing medium was not significant. Temperature also showed a significant effect on the length and the width of the larvae, while the type of tissue statistically impacted only the width.

Abstract
The decomposition of vertebrates is controlled largely by external temperature, yet internal temperatures can also play an important role but are generally poorly documented. In this study, we compared continuous hourly temperature recordings from the mouth, under the head, right chest and right abdomen, and in the rectum of one refrigerated human and one fresh pig cadaver during 29 days of decomposition. Each cadaver differed in its internal starting temperature, thus providing two contrasting case studies for examining temperature dynamics among body regions. We used time-series analysis methods common to hydrology to reveal key differences in internal temperature dynamics. Within both cadavers, the chest region experienced the highest average temperatures, and the mouth experienced the highest maximum hourly temperature. Temperatures exceeded 30 °C inside the pig for between 40% (rectum) and 75% (chest) of the duration of the study, but for only 20% (rectum) and 35% (chest) of the time in the human. Our study provides evidence of the different thermal trajectories occurring in different body regions, and some similarities between two cadavers despite their different starting thermal conditions. These results improve our understanding of why decomposition occurs at different rates within the same cadaver, and that the location of blowfly larvae collections should be noted to improve estimates of the post-mortem interval.

Abstract
Obtaining the specific development time of each species of forensic interest is crucial for the estimation of an accurate and reliable Minimum Postmortem Interval (PMImin). In Argentina, Lucilia ochricornis (Wiedemann) and Lucilia purpurascens (Walker) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were masked under the name Lucilia cluvia (Walker) for a long time still in forensic expertise. For this reason, the objective of this work is to deepen the study of the development time of these species and utilize this relevant information in the generation of different associated methods that can be used in forensics to estimate the PMI. Immature stages of L. ochricornis and L. purpurascens were reared in a brood chamber according to the following temperature treatments: 13.4, 15.1, 22.3, and 23.6°C. The development time of each stage/state of these flies was recorded as well as the resulting accumulated degree-hours (ADH), to build isomorphen diagrams and thermal summation models for each species. The development time and ADH were different between both species and their development stages. On the other hand, the methods provided for estimating PMImin provide the forensic entomologist more tools to reach accurate and reliable estimates.

Abstract
The early arrival and colonization of species belonging to the family Calliphoridae (Insecta: Diptera) on a corpse represent one of the most reliable means of estimating minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). However, information on the development and life cycles of some Argentine species in this family is not complete. The objective of this work was to contribute new information regarding the larval body size of neotropical species that allow, through the construction of forensic methods, the estimation of a more precise and specific PMImin. This work was conducted on laboratory cultures of larvae of Lucilia ochricornis (Wiedemann) and Lucilia purpurascens (Walker) using as average temperatures: 13.4, 15.1, 22.6, and 23.3°C, which represent the four seasons of the year for the province of Salta. With this information, we constructed isomegalen diagrams and growth models for the obtained variables of larval length and body weight. The mean values of length and body weight differ between both species, indicating that L. purpurascens exceeded L. ochricornis in both variables. In contrast, within each species the mean length and weight remained unchanged between culture temperatures for the three larval instars. Isomegalen diagrams can be used for the entire range of temperatures worked in the laboratory, but the body size entered is approximate. The growth models allow the use of point data but are specific for each culture temperature used.

Abstract
Forensic entomology relies on insect development data generated within a laboratory setting in the estimation of minimum postmortem interval (mPMI). The methodologies used to produce these data vary considerably within the field and there is no accepted standard approach to laboratory rearing of forensically relevant species. A wide range of rearing media are used across published studies, including different species of animal and types of tissue (e.g., muscle and liver). Differing methodologies, particularly rearing diet, can introduce considerable variation into the baseline data upon which forensic estimates of the mPMI are calculated. Consequently, research establishing a widely available, standard and/or optimal, rearing medium for blow fly development for forensic application is desirable. This study examined dietary effects on the development of two forensically relevant blow fly species: Calliphora dubia Macquart, 1855, and Chrysomya rufifacies Macquart 1842 (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Larvae of both species were reared on pork liver, pork mince, pork loin, beef liver, beef mince, and guinea pig carcass under two constant temperature regimes (24 ± 1°C and 30 ± 1°C; 70 ± 10% humidity; 12-h/12-h photoperiod) to assess the influence of temperature on developmental response to diet. Fundamental developmental data pertaining to both species are reported. Developmental response to diet was species-specific and influenced by temperature with indication that the optimal temperature for C. dubia development is below 30°C. Pork mince was the most appropriate dietary standard of the rearing media investigated for the formulation of forensic development data for both species investigated.

Abstract
Estimation of the time of colonization (TOC) is often based on laboratory studies that document arthropod development. Precise data for forensically important species, such as blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae), are essential for accuracy in the estimate of TOC. Calliphorid development is a quantitative trait and thus depends on a host of variables. In calliphorids, studies showed photoperiod can play a role in development. However, there has been little research to date on the effects of photoperiod, and available data indicate the impact is species-specific. In this study, the effects of photoperiod on the development of Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart), were examined. Chrysomya rufifacies is a fly of great medical and legal importance and is often encountered on vertebrate remains in temperate and tropic regions throughout the world, including North and Central America, Asia, and Australia. Larvae were reared under light regimes of 12, 16, and 24 h of light at 28.5 ± 0.0°C, 86.2 ± 0.3 RH. Minimum development time for each stage did not differ significantly for the applied photoperiods, nor were there significant differences in total minimum postembryonic development time. Photoperiod did not significantly affect larval size or growth rate. The data suggest that light durations investigated in this study do not influence the development of C. rufifacies. This indicates that photoperiod may not be a concern for forensic entomologists in Texas, United States, or other areas with similar conditions when estimating the TOC for this species. Validation efforts are encouraged to verify this conclusion.

Abstract
The secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is a carrion-breeding species of veterinary, medical, and forensic importance. It is very abundant in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions and is one of the most common colonizers of vertebrate remains in the southern United States. Therefore, it is of great evidential value in estimating the minimum time of colonization (TOC) of remains related to forensic investigations. So far, studies have investigated the effects of several biotic and abiotic factors on C. macellaria. However, no data on the specific impact of food source moisture on the larval development of this species are known to have been published. In this study, the effects of diet moisture on larval development time, larval length, and weight over time, as well as adult emergence and weight were investigated. C. macellaria was reared on diets prepared from freeze-dried bovine liver with varying moisture content (0.0, 33.0, 50.0, or 70.8%) at 25.6 °C, 77% RH, and 14:10 L:D. Frozen-thawed liver was used as a control. Water content was found to significantly impact immature development time and corresponding life-history traits, both within and among developmental stages of C. macellaria. This result indicates moisture content of the carrion source should be considered when estimating time of colonization and identification of immature stage of flies in forensic investigations. Furthermore, as diet moisture content significantly affected the dry mass of emerging adults, the mass of adults collected at a crime scene could provide useful information as it could be an indicator of the condition the remains were in during time of colonization, including the moisture content of the tissue.

Abstract
The age of insects found on corpses is often used to estimate the minimum postmortem interval by forensic entomologists. Insect development is affected by biotic and abiotic factors, and temperature is the most important environmental factor that determines the length of insect development. Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a globally distributed fly that is commonly found on corpses, and this study investigated the development of C. rufifacies from China at various constant temperatures. At 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34°C, the developmental time from egg to adult was 870.17 ± 11.50, 566.20 ± 8.79, 406.38 ± 10.98, 291.14 ± 4.71, 232.59 ± 5.96, 192.47 ± 3.45, and 160.48 ± 7.15 h, respectively. We established three developmental models for C. rufifacies to estimate the age of the developing insect: the isomorphen diagram model, the isomegalen diagram model and the thermal summation model. Regression analysis was conducted to obtain the relationship between body length and development time of the larvae from hatching to wandering. The developmental threshold temperatures of the egg, 1st instar, 2nd instar, 3rd instar, and wandering larvae, and intra-puparial stages were 12.28 ± 0.30, 11.74 ± 0.95, 12.70 ± 0.55, 11.68 ± 0.96, 10.53 ± 1.53, and 12.51 ± 0.41°C, respectively. The developmental threshold temperature, and the thermal summation constant during the entire developmental period were 3759.95 ± 170.80 degree hours and 11.96 ± 0.38°C, respectively. This study provides an improved dataset to estimate the postmortem interval of corpses using C. rufifacies.

Abstract
We present four cases that use entomological data to estimate postmortem interval (PMI). In the first case, the body was found in an outdoor environment at 26 °C and was at the fresh stage. However, the PMImin estimated using maggots collected from the corpse was more than 68 h. This was certainly an incorrect estimation because the degree of the body decomposition was light, and it may have been caused by flies invading the corpse before death occurred. In the second case, a corpse of an adult male was found in a semi-closed room, and the body was highly decomposed and mummified. In this case, we used Dermestes maculatus DeGeer (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) to successfully estimate the PMI. The third case involved a female body discovered in her room after she committed suicide by consuming excessive clozapine and alcohol. The PMImin estimated through entomological data did not match the time of death that the other evidence indicated. Thus, we speculated that clozapine and alcohol may have influenced the development of fly larvae. The fourth case occurred in the winter. The murderer killed the victim and burned and dumped the corpse. However, the burned body still attracted necrophagous insects and we successfully calculated the PMImin by using insect evidence.

Abstract
Aldrichina grahami (Aldrich) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a forensically important species mainly found in Asia and is one of the first species to colonize a corpse in early spring and late autumn when the ambient temperature is slightly lower. In this study, A. grahami was collected from the Yangtze River Delta region and reared at seven constant temperatures ranging from 16 to 34°C to investigate the indices of development duration, accumulated degree hours, and larval body length. Using these results, we generated an isomorphen diagram, thermal summation model, and isomegalen diagram for A. grahami. Equations of the variation in larval body length with time after hatching and variation in time after hatching with body length were also obtained. A. grahami can complete its life cycle in 16-28°C, while its development was incomplete at 31 and 34°C, where puparia failed to transform into adults and eggs failed to hatch, respectively. The mean (±SD) developmental durations of A. grahami from egg to adult at 16, 19, 22, 25, and 28°C were 685.5 ± 18.8, 540.3 ± 15.9, 454.3 ± 19.4, 388.8 ± 19.0, and 335.5 ± 8.7 h, respectively. The mean (±SE) developmental threshold temperature D0 and the thermal summation constant K were determined as 4.33 ± 0.21°C and 7,985.9 ± 104.5 degree hours, respectively. The results of this study provide fundamental development data for the use of A. grahami in minimum postmortem interval estimations.

Abstract
Sarcosaprophagous flesh flies are insect species frequently found on corpses, and their developmental patterns can be used as reliable indicators for estimating minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). In this study, the Boettcherisca peregrina Robineau-Desvoidy was reared at seven constant temperatures ranging from 16 to 34 °C to investigate the indexes of development duration and larval body length. Using these results, we generated three development models, including isomorphen diagram, isomegalen diagram, and thermal summation model. Regression analysis was conducted to obtain simulation equations of the variation in larval body length with time after larviposition, and variation in time after larviposition with body length. The developmental durations of B. peregrina from larviposition to adult eclosion under 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31 and 34 °C were 1,064.7 ± 34.8, 756.0 ± 19.0, 559.6 ± 5.5, 414.3 ± 3.9, 315.0 ± 2.0, 278.0 ± 4.0, and 258.0 ± 3.5 h, respectively. The developmental threshold temperature of B. peregrina was 10.87 ± 0.49 °C, and the thermal summation constant was 5,809.7 ± 291.4 degree days. The results of this study provide basic data for the use of B. peregrina for estimating PMImin.

Abstract
Carrion flies are the primary insects colonizing vertebrate carrion; however, limited information is available on the variation in the time of colonization (TOC) as related to time of placement (TOP) and time of death (TOD), particularly in Thailand. Three seasonal sets of nine broiler carcasses (euthanized and placed in field within 0.5 h after death) were placed in mesh enclosures within a disturbed deciduous dipterocarp forest at Nakhonsawan Province, upper-central Thailand, for 3 d to determine the colonization time by carrion flies. In total, 21,536 arthropods were collected using traps placed over each carcass. Carrion flies of the family Calliphoridae, Muscidae, and Sarcophagidae predominated (93.42%). Of these, Chrysomya megacephala (F.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were the dominant species being 36.18% and 35.36%, respectively, across season. These species arrived immediately (5 min) after placement of the carrion in the field during the rainy season, while they were delayed 1-2 h during the dry season. Chrysomya megacephala, C. rufifacies, and Parasarcophaga dux (Thomson) colonized the remains. Time of colonization by C. megacephala and C. rufifacies occurred mostly at ∼1600-1700 hours (10-11 h after placement) for all seasons. In contrast, TOC by P. dux was delayed for 1 d during rainy and dry season. These results mark the first record of carrion fly colonization in this area and also may deserve important information for the further study as they demonstrate time of colonization differs from TOP and most importantly TOD.
