Advancing research on femicide prevention: A mixed methods approach

Femicide, the killing of women, girls, and infants, is a pervasive problem affecting all global societies. Policy and research are impeded by inaccurate and missing prevalence data, gaps in understanding of femicide, especially for hard-to-reach marginalized populations, and conflicting perceptions between jurisdictions. Leveraging on a combined socio-ecologic model and Public Health approach, the paper spans the methods of a computed tomography-based injury study, an in-depth media-analysis, a legislation evaluation study, and a data barriers' study. Injury patterns, media depiction, and end-user consultations will close the loop on residual problems such as implementation, data gaps, and cultural perceptions. By mixed methods research representing multiple regions, and stakeholders, this project will enhance knowledge on interpersonal, institutional, and societal factors of femicide, advancing the humanitarian forensic discipline. The research method will identify emerging trends and facilitate improvements in tertiary prevention of femicide, specific to resource settings.

Profiling Players Involved in Overkill: An Analysis of 71 Cases in Central Italy

"Overkill" is characterized by the finding of excessive wounds on the victim's body. Despite the large use of this term, it does not have a definition in the literature yet. Our study aimed to analyze the information related to the dynamics of overkill cases, collecting objective variables, and producing a profile of the players involved in this type of homicides. Data on 71 overkill cases from reports of the autopsies performed in the Section of Legal Medicine of the University of Rome Tor Vergata from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2020 were collected. The victims and the perpetrators of overkill shared similar characteristics: they were usually male aged between 20 and 50 years, more likely in the 20-35 years range; victims however also showed another age peak in the range 50-55 years. The type of damage can be linked to the sole action of a cold weapon or the simultaneous use of multiple harmful tools with no significant differences. The most common motive proved to be a dispute for futile reasons; however, in the case of a single perpetrator of the crime, the economic and passionate motives are as frequent as the previous one. Implications of the findings and avenues for future research are discussed.

Improved medical treatment could explain a decrease in homicides with a single stab wound

Since the 1990s, there has been a reduction in the homicide rate in Denmark and other Western countries. Our hypothesis is that part of the decrease in the sharp force homicide rate can be explained by better and faster medical treatment over time, and we explore this via stab wound homicides, the largest group of homicides in Denmark. To investigate our hypothesis we undertook an epidemiological study of 428 stab wound homicides in Denmark 1992-2016 based on autopsy reports with registration of stab wounds, quantification of injury severity, treatment intensity and survival time. During 1992-2016, there was a significant reduction in the annual number of victims with a single stab wound, but no reduction in victims with multiple stab wounds. Victims with single stab wounds reached the hospital more often, survived longer and had less severe injuries (New Injury Severity Score (NISS)) than victims with multiple stab wounds. Higher NISS correlated with shorter survival time for all the stab wound victims and for the subgroup that underwent medical treatment. During the 25-year study period, the proportion of victims who underwent surgery before dying increased threefold. The victims in the first half of the study period had shorter survival times than the victims in the last half. We concluded that better and faster medical treatment could partly be responsible for the observed decrease in the number of single stab wound homicides and thereby possibly also in the total number of stab wound homicides.
