Abstract
Algae of the order Cladophorales are the source of a unique nanocellulose with high crystallinity and a large aspect ratio, enabling broad surface modification. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are obtained via acid hydrolysis of nanocellulose, which is highly crystalline. However, the production of CNCs from Cladophorales algae is limited and still uses a conventional heating method. Thus, this study aimed to develop a microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) method for fast and efficient extraction of CNCs from Cladophora glomerata algae. Additionally, we replaced the use of hypochlorite with H2O2, which is more environmentally friendly, and compared the CNCs obtained from the conventional methods with our new method. The functional structure of CNCs was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Single-step H2O2 bleaching with MAE yielded the smallest-sized CNCs. Our developed method resulted in the production of CNCs with a high crystallinity index, high thermal stability, and high purity of native cellulose. Additionally, none of the CNCs were toxic to primary normal human dermal fibroblasts. The properties of the isolated CNCs may make them useful materials in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations.

Abstract
The use of packaging in the food industry is essential to protect food and improve its shelf life. However, traditional packaging, based on petroleum derivatives, presents some problems because it is non-biodegradable and is obtained from nonrenewable sources. In contrast, protein-based smart packaging is presented as an environmentally friendly strategy that also permits obtaining packaging with excellent characteristics for the formation of smart films and coatings. This review aims to summarize recent developments in smart packaging, focusing on edible films/coatings materials, originating from animal and plant protein sources. Various characteristics like mechanical, barrier, functional, sensory, and sustainability of packaging systems are discussed, and the processes used for their development are also described. Moreover, relevant examples of the application of these smart packaging technologies in muscle foods and some innovations in this area are presented. Protein-based films and coatings from plant and animal origins have great potential to enhance food safety and quality, and reduce environmental issues (e.g., plastic pollution and food waste). Some characteristics of the packages can be improved by incorporating polysaccharides, lipids, and other components as antioxidants, antimicrobials, and nanoparticles in protein-based composites. Promising results have been shown in many muscle foods, such as meat, fish, and other seafood. These innovative smart packaging systems are characterized by their renewable and biodegradable nature, and sustainability, among other features that go beyond typical protection barriers (namely, active, functional, and intelligent features). Nonetheless, the utilization of protein-based responsive films and coatings at industrial level still need optimization to be technologically and economically valid and viable.

Abstract
Pack integrity is essential for the success of modified atmosphere packaging of food products. Colorimetric oxygen leak indicators or tags are simple and smart tools that can depict the presence or absence of oxygen within a package. However, not many bio-based electrospun materials were explored for this purpose. Ultraviolet light-activated kappa-carrageenan-based smart oxygen indicating tag was developed using the electrospinning technique in this study and its stability during storage was determined. Kappa-carrageenan was used with redox dye, sacrificial electron donor, photocatalyst, and solvent for preparing oxygen indicating electrospun tag. Parameters of electrospinning namely flow rate of the polymer solution, the distance between spinneret and collector, and voltage applied were optimized using Taguchi L9 orthogonal design. Rheological and microstructural studies revealed that the electrospinning solution was pseudoplastic and the mat fibers were compact and non-woven with an average fiber size of 1–2 microns. Oxygen sensitivity at different oxygen concentrations revealed that the tag was sensitive enough to detect as low as 0.4% oxygen. The developed tag was stable for at least 60 days when stored in dark at 25 °C and 65% RH. The developed mat could be highly useful in modified atmosphere packaging applications to check seal integrity in oxygen devoid packages.
