Abstract
The aim of this paper is to study the effect of variation in the component ratio of (1-x)Si3N4-xAl2O3 ceramics on the phase composition, strength and thermal properties of ceramics. To obtain ceramics and their further study, the solid-phase synthesis method combined with thermal annealing of samples at a temperature of 1500 °C typical for the initialization of phase transformation processes was used. The relevance and novelty of this study lies in obtaining new data on the processes of phase transformations with a variation in the composition of ceramics, as well as determining the effect of the phase composition on the resistance of ceramics to external influences. According to X-ray phase analysis data, it was found that an increase in the Si3N4 concentration in the composition of ceramics leads to a partial displacement of the tetragonal phase of SiO2 and Al2(SiO4)O and an increase in the contribution of Si3N4. Evaluation of the optical properties of the synthesized ceramics depending on the ratio of the components showed that the formation of the Si3N4 phase leads to an increase in the band gap and the absorbing ability of the ceramics due to the formation of additional absorption bands from 3.7-3.8 eV. Analysis of the strength dependences showed that an increase in the contribution of the Si3N4 phase with subsequent displacement of the oxide phases leads to a strengthening of the ceramic by more than 15-20%. At the same time, it was found that a change in the phase ratio leads to the hardening of ceramics, as well as an increase in crack resistance.

Abstract
Among the Key Design Integration Issues (KDIIs) recently selected for the DEMOnstration Fusion Power Plant (DEMO), the operation of the Balance of Plant (BoP) Power Conversion System (PCS) has been recognized as a crucial aspect, due to the typical pulsed regime characterizing the fusion power plant. In the framework of the DEMO Water-Cooled Lead-Lithium Breeding Blanket (WCLL BB) concept, three BoP solutions have been recognized to be able to overcome this issue. They rely on different coupling options between the Primary Heat Transfer Systems (PHTSs) and the PCS: an Indirect Coupling Design (ICD) with Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS) and Energy Storage System (ESS), a Direct Coupling Design (DCD) with AUXiliary Boiler (AUXB), and a DCD with small ESS. The present paper deals with a preliminary feasibility assessment of the first two solutions. The analysis, carried out with the GateCycleTM code, referred to a preliminary design phase, devoted to the sizing of the main components, and to a second phase focused on the cycle optimization. The study demonstrated the feasibility of the two BoP concepts. They are able to produce a satisfactory average electric power (>700 MW) with an acceptable average net electric efficiency (33.6% for both concepts). For each solution, the main strengths and weaknesses are compared and discussed.

Abstract
The main components of a liquid breeder blanket in a fusion power reactor are lead lithium alloy (PbLi) and the steel structure in which the liquid is enclosed (EUROFER). Several compatibility tests have shown that structural materials always suffer from corrosion attacks. The governing mechanism can be attributed to the dissolution of the steel by the liquid breeder and is strongly related to the PbLi chemistry, velocity profile, and temperature. A new facility, CiCLo-C (CIEMAT Corrosion Loop, Internally Coated), is dedicated to the study of corrosion in materials under the severe breeding blanket condition. An effort was made to design an experimental facility with a specific test section able to work at quite ambitious operation parameters: up to 550 °C and a 1 m/s flow of PbLi. Furthermore, an innovative tantalum coating was introduced in the whole loop to avoid impurities coming from the pipeline, which can disturb the measurements, and to better preserve the installation.

A Model to Simulate Gas Dissolution into/through Metals and Its Application to Deuterium in a 316L Steel Chamber with Pb-Li in a Quasi-2D Geometry. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
Liquid lead-lithium in eutectic proportions (Pb-Li) is a candidate material for Breeding Blankets (BBs) in future Fusion Power Plants (FPP). BB design depends on the diffusivity and Sieverts’ constant (solubility) of tritium in this alloy, but literature reports a large scattering of measurements for these values. A model was developed to address one possible source of this scattering in static experiments, i.e., non-negligible loss of hydrogen gas through steel walls of containers. This model simulates the dissolution of gases into, and their diffusion through, metallic barriers for diffusivity and Sieverts’ constant as inputs. When implemented, it can be used to compute the pressure decrease in a metallic chamber, and comparison of simulated curves with experimental ones allows for estimates of the diffusivity and Sieverts’ constant. This approach was used to estimate these coefficients for deuterium in stainless steel, using experiments performed with a 316L steel chamber from an existing facility (the Vacuum Sieve Tray setup) and simulations in a quasi-2D representation of this chamber. This validated the model, which was then used to simulate the chamber containing Pb-Li, as a means of planning for future experiments.

Abstract
This work is devoted to the study of the radiation damage kinetics and subsequent embrittlement of the near-surface layer of SiC ceramics subjected to irradiation with low-energy He2+ ions. Interest in these types of ceramics is due to their great prospects for use as structural materials for nuclear power, as well as for use in the creation of protective structures for long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel. During the study, the dependences of changes in the structural, mechanical, strength, and morphological characteristics of SiC ceramics depending on irradiation fluence were obtained. It has been established that the greatest changes in the strength properties are associated with the dominance of the crystal lattice swelling effect in the structure due to an increase in the concentration of implanted helium, and its further agglomeration with the formation of vacancy complexes of the He-V type. A model for changing the structural properties of ceramics irradiated with low-energy He2+ ions based on the change in the contributions of the dislocation density concentration, anisotropic distortion of the crystal lattice, and the effect of swelling as a result of implantation is proposed.

Abstract
The Water Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) breeding blanket is one of the driver blanket concepts under development for the European Demonstration Reactor (DEMO). The majority of the blanket volume is occupied by flowing PbLi at eutectic composition. This liquid metal flow is subdued to high fluxes of particles coming from the plasma which are translated into a high non-homogeneous heat volumetric source inside the fluid. The heat is removed from the PbLi thanks to several water tubes immersed in the metal. The dynamics of the PbLi is heavily affected by the heat source and by the position of the tubes. Moreover, the conducting fluid is electrically coupled with the intense magnetic field used for the plasma confinement. As a result, the PbLi flow is strongly affected by the Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) forces. In the WCLL, the MHD and convective interactions are expected to be comparable. Therefore, the PbLi dynamics and consequently the heat transfer between the liquid metal and the water coolant will be ruled by the magneto-convective phenomenon. This work presents 3D computational analyses of the PbLi flow in the frontal region of the WCLL design. The simulations include the combined effect of MHD forces caused by the magnetic field and the buoyancy interaction created by the temperature distribution. The latter is determined by the PbLi dynamics, the volumetric heat source and the position of the water tubes. Simulations have allowed computing the heat transfer between the PbLi and the water tubes. Nusselt and Grashof numbers have been obtained in the different regions of the system.

Abstract
Fusion energy is an area of active development and innovation worldwide, with many design concepts studied, each exhibiting a range of technical challenges. A significant portion of technical challenges will be unique for a given design concept; however, there are several overarching challenges that any design must address to some degree. These include tritium handling and the tritium cycle; materials and their survivability in the high-energy neutron environment of D-T fusion; neutronics and the validation of nuclear data; remote handling and maintenance activities; and integrated holistic approaches to fusion plant design. This paper provides an overview of these aspects for magnetic and inertial fusion approaches with a view to highlighting commonality and the benefits of shared knowledge that this may bring. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'Prospects for high gain inertial fusion energy (part 2)'.

Abstract
In the D-T fueled tokamak, the neutrons not only carry the approximately 80% energy released in the per fusion reaction, but also are the source of radioactivity in the fusion system. Therefore, high-fidelity neutronics simulation is required to support such reactor design and safety analysis. In the present work, taking European HCPB DEMO (Helium Cooled Pebble Bed demonstration fusion plant) developed by KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) as an example, the preliminary neutronics analysis covering the assessments of NWL (neutron wall loading), TBR (tritium breeding ratio), nuclear power generation, radiation loads on PFCs (plasma-facing components) and TFCs (toroidal field coils) has been carried out by using SuperMC in the case of both unbiased and biased simulations. The preliminary results indicate that the blanket scheme could satisfy the design requirements in terms of TBR and shielding of inboard blankets. Specially, a speed-up by ~164 times in the calculation for thick shielding region (TFC region) is achieved by using global weight windows generated via GWWG in SuperMC. In addition, compared to MCNP, SuperMC shows advantages in accurate and efficient modeling of complex system, efficient calculation and 3D interactive visualization.
