A secure and dependable trust assessment (SDTS) scheme for industrial communication networks

Due to tamper-resistant sensor nodes and wireless media, Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are susceptible to various security threats that severely affect industrial/business applications. The survival of sensor networks is highly dependent on the flourishing collaboration of sensor nodes. Trust management schemes seem to be realistic and promising techniques to improve security as well as cooperation (dependability) among sensor nodes by estimating the trust level (score) of individual sensor nodes. This research paper presents a well-organized and motivating secure, dependable trust assessment (SDTS) scheme for industrial WSNs to cope with unexpected behavior such as an on-off attack, bad-mouthing attack, garnished attack, etc., by employing robust trust evaluation components based on success ratio and node misbehaviour. SDTS incorporates an interesting trust evaluation function in which the trust range can be adjusted in accordance with the application requirement. SDTS include direct communication trust, indirect communication trust, data trust, and misbehavior-based trust to defend the multiple internal attacks. SDTS works according to the behavior of nodes, i.e., whether the sensor nodes are interacting frequently or not. Moreover, abnormal attenuation and dynamic slide lengths are incorporated in the proposed model (SDTS) to deal with various natural calamities and internal attacks. SDTS is compared against three recent state-of-the-art methods and found efficient in terms of ease of trust assessment, false-positive rate (2.5%), false-negative rate (2%), attack detection rate (90%), detection accuracy (91%), average energy consumption (0.40 J), and throughput (108 Kbps) under the load of 500 sensor nodes with 50% malicious nodes. Investigational results exhibit the potency of the proposed scheme.

OGAS: Omni-directional Glider Assisted Scheme for autonomous deployment of sensor nodes in open area wireless sensor network

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is built with the wireless interconnection of Sensor Nodes (SNs) generally deployed to monitor the changes within the environment of hostile, rugged, and unreachable target regions. The optimal placement of SNs is very important for the efficient and effective operation of any WSN. Unlike small and reachable regions, the deployment of the SNs in large-scale regions (e.g., forest regions, nuclear radiation affected regions, international border regions, natural calamity affected regions, etc.) is substantially challenging. Present paper deals with an autonomous air-bone scheme for the precise placement of SNs in such large-scale regions. It uses an Omni-directional Circular Glider (OCG) per SN. After being aerially dropped, SN pilots the OCG to glide itself to the predetermined locations (PL) within a target region. The major advantage of using OCG is its capability to quickly update the direction, during the flight (with turning radius = 0) toward its PL. The proposed uses a recursive path correction model to maintain the orientation of the gliding SN towards the PL. The simulation results, and the hardware implementation, indicate that the proposed model is effectively operational in the environmental winds. It is time-efficient and more accurate in the deployment of the SNs in comparison to existing state of art SN deployment models.

Enabling secure mutual authentication and storage checking in cloud-assisted IoT

Internet of things (IoT) is a technology that can collect the data sensed by the devices for the further real-time services. Using the technique of cloud computing to assist IoT devices in data storing can eliminate the disadvantage of the constrained local storage and computing capability. However, the complex network environment makes cloud servers vulnerable to attacks, and adversaries pretend to be legal IoT clients trying to access the cloud server. Hence, it is necessary to provide a mechanism of mutual authentication for the cloud system to enhance the storage security. In this paper, a secure mutual authentication is proposed for cloud-assisted IoT. Note that the technique of chameleon hash signature is used to construct the authentication. Moreover, the proposed scheme can provide storage checking with the assist of a fully-trusted entity, which highly improves the checking fairness and efficiency. Security analysis proves that the proposed scheme in this paper is correct. Performance analysis demonstrates that the proposed scheme can be performed with high efficiency.

A hybrid approach to enhance the lifespan of WSNs in nuclear power plant monitoring system

In recent years, the nuclear power plant has received huge attention as it generates vast amounts of power at a lower cost. However, its creation of radioactive wastes is a major environmental concern. Therefore, the nuclear power plant requires a reliable and uninterrupted monitoring system as an essential part of it. Monitoring a nuclear power plant using wireless sensor networks is a convenient and popular practice now. This paper proposes a hybrid approach for monitoring wireless sensor networks in the context of a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. Our hybrid approach enhances the lifespan of wireless sensor networks reducing power consumption and offering better connectivity of sensors. To do so, it uses both the topology maintenance and topology construction algorithms. We found that the HGETRecRot topology maintenance algorithm enhances the network lifetime compared to other algorithms. This algorithm increases the communication and sensing coverage area but decreases the network performance. We also propose a prediction model, based on linear regression algorithm, that predicts the best combination of topology maintenance and topology construction algorithms.

Utilising Acknowledge for the Trust in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are emerging networks that are being utilized in a variety of applications, such as remote sensing images, military, healthcare, and traffic monitoring. Those critical applications require different levels of security; however, due to the limitation of the sensor networks, security is a challenge where traditional algorithms cannot be used. In addition, sensor networks are considered as the core of the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities, where security became one of the most significant problems with IoT and smart cities applications. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel and light trust algorithm to satisfy the security requirements of WSNs. It considers sensor nodes’ limitations and cross-layer information for efficient secure routing in WSNs. It proposes a Tow-ACKs Trust (TAT) Routing protocol for secure routing in WSNs. TAT computes the trust values based on direct and indirect observation of the nodes. TAT uses the first-hand and second-hand information from the Data Link and the Transmission Control Protocol layers to modify the trust’s value. The suggested TATs’ protocols performance is compared to BTRM and Peertrust models in terms of malicious detection ratio, accuracy, average path length, and average energy consumption. The proposed algorithm is compared to BTRM and Peertrust models, the most recent algorithms that proved their efficiency in WSNs. The simulation results indicate that TAT is scalable and provides excellent performance over both BTRM and Peertrust models, even when the number of malicious nodes is high.
