Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pediatric physical therapists commonly treat children with postural control deficits. Ideally, pediatric functional postural control tests should therefore be able to identify postural control deficits in children with various disorders. Despite a plethora of available tests, evidence for their validity - especially known-groups - remains scarce. This review aims to determine the known-group validity of available functional postural control tests to differentiate various pediatric pathological groups of different ages from their typically developing (TD) peers. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were systematically searched (last update: February 2023; PROSPERO: CRD42023408982). Forty case-control studies with a pathological pediatric sample (N.=1331) and TD peers (N.=1889) were included and selected for data-extraction and -analysis. Risk of bias was assessed using the SIGN checklist and level of evidence was scored using GRADE. Random-effect meta-analyses were performed to estimate pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) for the various test types and subclassified based on pathology and/or age. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS When compared with TD peers, children with underlying pathologies performed significantly worse on pediatric functional postural control test batteries (SMD=-2.21), the Timed Up and Go Test and variants (SMD=2.30), the One Leg Stance test and variants (SMD=-2.14), while the Reach tests showed a smaller difference (SMD=-1.19). Subclassification within the meta-analyses showed that pathology was an influencing factor for the test batteries and the one leg stance test and variants. Age was an influencing factor for the reach tests. None of the included functional postural control tests exceeded a low level of evidence. CONCLUSIONS Pediatric functional postural control tests that assess multiple aspects of postural control (such as test batteries) seem to offer higher known-groups validity than single-task tests (e.g. reach tests). The underlying pathology has a larger impact on the validity of these tests than age. There remains an overall low level of evidence for the known-groups validity of pediatric functional postural control tests indicating the need for research with more homogenous groups and norm reference data.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sensory information obtained from the visual, somatosensory, and vestibular systems is responsible for regulating postural control, and if damage occurs in one or more of these sensory systems, postural control may be altered. OBJECTIVE To evaluate and compare the postural sway velocity between children with normal hearing and with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), matched by sex and age group, and to compare the postural sway velocity between children with normal hearing and with SNHL, with and without vestibular dysfunction. METHODS Cross-sectional study that evaluated 130 children (65 with normal hearing and 65 with SNHL), of both sexes and aged between 7 and 11 years, from public schools of the city of Caruaru, Pernambuco state, Brazil. The postural sway velocity of the center of pressure (COP) was assessed by a force platform, in two directions, anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML)), in three positions, namely bipedal support with feet together and parallel (parallel feet (PF)), bipedal support with one foot in front of the other (tandem foot (TF)), and single-leg support (one foot (OF)), evaluated with the eyes open and closed. RESULTS Children with SNHL demonstrated greater postural sway velocity compared to children with normal hearing in all the positions evaluated, with significant differences in the AP direction, with the eyes open (PF: p = 0.001; TF: p = 0.000; OF: p = 0.003) and closed (PF: p = 0.050; TF: p = 0.005). The same occurred in the ML direction, with the eyes open (PF: p = 0.001; TF: p = 0.000; OF: p = 0.001) and closed (PF: p = 0.002; TF: p = 0.000). The same occurred in relation to vestibular function, where the children with SNHL with an associated vestibular dysfunction demonstrated greater postural sway velocity compared to children with normal hearing in all the positions evaluated, demonstrating significant differences in the AP direction, with the eyes open (TF: p = 0.001; OF: p = 0.029) and eyes closed (PF: p = 0.036; TF: p = 0.033). The same occurred in the ML direction, with the eyes open (TF: p = 0.000) and with the eyes closed (PF: p = 0.008; TF: p = 0.009). CONCLUSIONS Children with SNHL demonstrated greater instability of postural control than children with normal hearing in all the directions assessed. Children with SNHL and an associated vestibular dysfunction demonstrated the greatest instability of postural control in this study.

Abstract
(1) Background: The influence of different factors on balance in adolescence is assessed by conducting functional balance tests that examine its different components. (2) Materials and methods: The study sample comprised 110 healthy adolescents of both sexes, aged 12-18 years. Single Leg Stance with Eyes Open (SLS-EO) and Eyes Closed (SLS-EC) tests were conducted to evaluate static balance, whereas the Functional Reach Test (FRT) and Lateral Reach Test (LRT) were performed to establish functional stability limits. The influence of sex, age, demographic factors, anthropometric characteristics, participation in sports activities, and trunk extensor muscle endurance (Biering-Sorensen test) on balance performance was determined through correlational and univariate linear regression analyses. (3) Results: Older age (Beta [β] = 0.247; 95% CI [0.75, 5.20]; p < 0.01) and better trunk extensor muscle endurance (β = 0.224; 95% CI [0.015, 0.13]; p < 0.05) were significant predictors of the SLS-EO results, while younger age (β = -0.219; 95% CI [-1.32, -0.11]; p < 0.05) and higher muscle percentage (β = 0.237; 95% CI [0.06, 0.48]; p < 0.05) emerged as significant predictors of LRT performance, and greater bone mass was a significant predictor of FRT results (β = 0.444; 95% CI [3.62, 8.17]; p < 0.01). However, none of the independent variables was a statistically significant predictor of the SLS-EC results. (4) Conclusions: The current study found that age, trunk extensor muscle endurance, muscle percentage, and bone mass are significant predictors of different balance components, suggesting that balance is task-specific.

Abstract
Children's ability to maintain balance requires effective integration of multisensory and biomechanical information. The current project examined the interaction between such sensory inputs, manipulating visual input (presence vs. absence), haptic (somatosensory) input (presence vs. absence of contact with a stable or unstable finger support surface), and biomechanical (sensorimotor) input (varying stance widths). Analyses of mean velocity of the center of pressure and the percentage stability gain highlighted the role of varying multisensory inputs in postural control. Developmentally, older children (6-11 years) showed a multisensory integration advantage compared with their younger counterparts (3-5.9 years), with the impact of varying sensory inputs more closely akin to that seen in adults. Subsequent analyses of the impact of anthropometric individual difference parameters (e.g., height, leg length, weight, areas of base of support) revealed a shifting pattern across development. For younger children, these parameters were positively related to postural stability across experimental conditions (i.e., increasing body size was related to increasing postural control). This pattern transitioned for older children, who showed a nonsignificant relation between body size and balance. Interestingly, because adults show a negative relation between anthropometric factors and stability (i.e., increasing body size is related to decreasing postural control), this shift for the older children can be seen as a developmental transition from child-like to adult-like balance control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare muscle strength, balance, and physical activity between children with chronic ankle instability and copers. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Pediatric Physical Therapy laboratory. PARTICIPANTS Children aged between 7 and 12 years old from regular schools who had a history of unilateral ankle sprain. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Lower extremity strength, Static and dynamic standing balance, and Level of physical activity. RESULTS Fifteen children with chronic ankle instability and 15 copers were recruited. Demographic data showed no differences between group except for sex and the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool-Youth (CAITY) score. Children with CAI had a significantly lower score during the standing long jump test (p < 0.05), poorer performance of single leg stance test (p < 0.001) and Y-Balance test in the anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral directions (p < 0.05) when compared to copers. Total METs per week was significantly higher in the copers (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Children with chronic ankle instability exhibited weaker lower limb strength, poorer static and dynamic standing balance, and participate in less physical activity compared to those in a coper group which may have future negative health consequences. Knowledge about the differences between the two groups may provide guidance for physical educators and physical therapists. (200 words).

Abstract
Comprehensive insights into balance control of individuals with hearing impairment are compared with individuals with hearing. Primary sources were obtained from 7 databases including PubMed, LILACS, SCOPUS, CINAHL, PEDro, CENTRAL, and Web of Science. The search period extended from inception until January 5, 2022. The systematic review included 24 studies and 27 trials, with a total of 2,148 participants. The meta-analysis showed a significant difference in the average balance control between individuals with hearing impairment and individuals with hearing, with individuals with hearing having a favorable advantage (p = 0.001). Additionally, average balance control was found to be in favor of individuals with hearing (p = 0.001) when comparing individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports. Finally, individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports demonstrated a significantly higher average difference in balance control (p = 0.001) when compared to sedentary people with hearing impairment. Our meta-analysis results indicate a balance defect in individuals with hearing impairment compared to individuals with hearing. In addition, with increasing age, the balance in individuals with hearing impairment improved. Additionally, the dependence of individuals with hearing impairment on the visual and proprioception systems to maintain balance increased. Finally, there was more dependence on the proprioception than the visual system, while individuals with hearing had stronger average balance control than individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports, when compared to sedentary people with hearing impairment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Children with hearing impairment are unable to speak and may suffer from some physical problems such as weakness in postural performance ability and development. The aim of the current study was to explore the effects of proprioception versus core stability training for an 8-week period followed by a 6-month detraining protocol on the balance performance of deaf students. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a randomized controlled trial design of three groups in blinded evaluators. The study was conducted at the school gym. A total of 30 participants, of male deaf students, were randomized into three groups: (1) one group receiving proprioception training (PT, n = 10), (2), one group receiving core stability training (CST, n = 10) for 8 weeks, and (3), and control group (CON, n = 10). The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) test and Y-balance test assess static and dynamic balance at pre- and post-training following a 6-month detraining. RESULTS Post 8 weeks of training intervention, PT and CST values showed significant improvements in both static (p = 0.001) and dynamic (p = 0.001) balance. Following the 6-month detraining, only the PT group maintained their improvements in both the static and dynamic balance tests (p = 0.348) and the CST group showed decreases in the balance tests (p = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that 8 weeks rehabilitation program (PT and CST) is an optimum training modality to enhance balance in deaf students and PT induces more training effects than CST for maintaining training benefits following the detraining. Abstract
BACKGROUND Postural control deficits are one of the most common impairments treated in pediatric physiotherapeutic practice. Adequate evaluation of these deficits is imperative to identify postural control deficits, plan treatment and assess efficacy. Currently, there is no gold standard evaluation for postural control deficits. However, the number of studies investigating the psychometric properties of functional pediatric postural control tests has increased significantly. OBJECTIVE To facilitate the selection of an appropriate pediatric functional postural control test in research and clinical practice. METHODS Systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus were systematically searched (last update: June 2022; PROSPERO: CRD42021246995). Studies were selected using the PICOs-method (pediatric populations (P), functional assessment tools for postural control (I) and psychometric properties (O). The risk of bias was rated with the COSMIN checklist and the level of evidence was determined with GRADE. For each test, the postural control systems were mapped, and the psychometric properties were extracted. RESULTS Seventy studies investigating 26 different postural control tests were included. Most children were healthy or had cerebral palsy. Overall, the evidence for all measurement properties was low to very low. Most tests (95%) showed good reliability (ICC>0.70), but inconsistent validity results. Structural validity, internal consistency and responsiveness were only available for 3 tests. Only the Kids-BESTest and FAB covered all postural control systems. CONCLUSION Currently, 2 functional tests encompass the entire construct of postural control. Although reliability is overall good, validity results depend on task, age and pathology. Future research should focus on test batteries and should particularly explore structural validity and responsiveness in different populations with methodologically strong study designs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of a customized smartphone application (CSA) for postural sway (PS) assessment. METHODS This validity and reliability study evaluated static balance by measuring PS in 29 healthy volunteers (15 women, 14 men, mean age 28 ± 5.11). Assessments included synchronized data collection using 3 systems: the CSA, a force plate, and the clinical modified balance error scoring system (mBESS). The experimental procedure included three 40-seconds long repetitions in 3 positions. Outcome measures included pathway and 95% ellipse area. Statistical analysis compared the developed application to both the force plate and the mBESS to test its validation and analyzed repeatability of the 3 experimental measurements. RESULTS Good to strong correlations were found between the CSA and the force plate in double and tandem stance (pathway r = 0.81-0.91), and moderate to high reliability was found for the CSA (0.66-0.75) and for the force plate (0.69-0.77) pathway measurements. The similarity in reliability results of the 2 devices and the high correlation both support the validity of the CSA. Furthermore, a high correlation was demonstrated between the CSA and the mBESS (r = 0.80), higher than the force plate and the mBESS. CONCLUSION The developed CSA was found valid and reliable in healthy young adults, and further research is needed to recommend it for clinical balance assessments. The CSA could therefore be considered for PS assessment in the clinical field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood hearing impairment is a major disability associated with delayed motor development. The affected Fine motor performance in children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) could be due to dynamic balance deficits and visual-motor incoordination. OBJECTIVE This study was designed to investigate the effects of fine motor exercises with or without balancing exercises on fine motor skills in children with SNHL. METHODS One hundred and eighty (180) children their age ranged from 8 to 18 years old diagnosed with SNHL were selected. They were divided into three groups, 60 children (control group) practiced only their ordinary activities of daily living, 60 children (fine motor exercises group) practiced fine motor exercises, and 60 children (fine motor and balance exercise) group practiced fine motor and balance exercises. The outcomes were assessed by the Bruininks Oseretsky Test of the motor proficiency second edition scale (BOT-2). RESULTS Generally, there was a statistically significant difference between control group and fine motor exercises group where (p < 0.05), besides, there was a statistically significant difference between control group and fine motor and balance exercises group where (p < 0.05). But, there was no statistically significant difference between fine motor exercises group and fine motor and balance exercises group where (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The Fine Motor performance of children with SNHL has been improved by Fine motor with or without balancing exercises according to (BOT-2).

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study compared dynamic postural stability (DPS) and lower limb kinematics during single leg hopping (SLH) performed by typically-developed children from urban and rural settings and children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) from a rural setting. METHODS Typically-developed nine-year-old children from an urban (n = 27) and rural setting (n = 14) (controls), and nine-year-old children with FASD from a rural setting (n = 14) (cases) performed SLH and landing on a pressure mat. Motion analysis systems described 1) Spatiotemporal and centre of pressure parameters (COP) and lower limb sagittal plane kinematics. Descriptive results are presented in median and ranges and differences between groups were determined by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U statistical tests. The level of significance was p < 0.05. RESULTS During hopping, the urban controls had longer stance and swing times (p < 0.001) than the rural groups. The urban controls remained in greater hip flexion compared to the case group (p = 0.02). The urban controls landed in more plantarflexion at initial foot contact (IFC) than the cases (p < 0.001) and the rural controls (p = 0.03). The rural groups landed with greater knee extension at IFC than the urban controls (cases p = 0.04; rural controls p < 0.001). During the landing motion, the urban controls moved into more hip flexion compared to the cases (p = 0.015) and the rural controls (p = 0.026). The cases displayed greater COP anteroposterior values during landing compared to both control groups, but the case group displayed the fastest time to stability. CONCLUSION The different hopping strategies observed provides an indication of the movement capabilities of these groups.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In children, the impact of hearing loss on biomechanical gait parameters is not well understood. Thus, the objectives of this study were to examine three-dimensional lower limb joint torques in deaf compared to age-matched healthy (hearing) children while walking at preferred gait speed. METHODS Thirty prepubertal boys aged 8-14 were enrolled in this study and divided into a group with hearing loss (deaf group) and an age-matched healthy control. Three-dimensional joint torques were analyzed during barefoot walking at preferred speed using Kistler force plates and a Vicon motion capture system. RESULTS Findings revealed that boys with hearing loss showed lower joint torques in ankle evertors, knee flexors, abductors and internal rotators as well as in hip internal rotators in both, the dominant and non-dominant lower limbs (all p < 0.05; d = 1.23-7.00; 14-79%). Further, in the dominant limb, larger peak ankle dorsiflexor (p < 0.001; d = 1.83; 129%), knee adductor (p < 0.001; d = 3.20; 800%), and hip adductor torques (p < 0.001; d = 2.62; 350%) were found in deaf participants compared with controls. CONCLUSION The observed altered lower limb torques during walking are indicative of unstable gait in children with hearing loss. More research is needed to elucidate whether physical training (e.g., balance and/or gait training) has the potential to improve walking performance in this patient group.

Abstract
This study was designed to assess how the results obtained for three different posturographic platforms agreed with each other in an assessment of static postural stability. The study included 111 young healthy participants. A measurement of postural stability was made for each participant, with their eyes open and then closed, on each platform in a random order. The Romberg ratio, path length, and center of pressure (COP) area were analyzed. For all measures, significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed among the three force plates. The highest Spearman's rank correlation was observed between Alfa vs. CQStab2P (0.20 to 0.38), and the lowest between Alfa vs. AccuGait (-0.19 to 0.09). Similar results were obtained for the concordance correlation coefficient (0.10 to 0.22 for Alfa vs. CQStab2P and -0.6 to 0.02 for Alfa vs. AccuGait). Bland-Altman analysis for values standardized (z-scores) against AccuGait indicated a low level of agreement between compared platforms, with the largest error between AccuGait vs. Alfa, and a slightly lower error between AccuGait vs. CQStab2P or Alfa vs. CQStab2P. The 95% limits of agreement ranged from 2.38 to 7.16 (Alfa vs. AccuGait), 2.09 to 5.69 (CQStab2P vs. AccuGait), and 1.39 to 7.44 (AccuGait vs. Alfa) in COP length with eyes open and COP length Romberg ratio, respectively. Special care is recommended when comparing values relating to COPs from different devices that are analyzed by different software. Moreover, unperturbed stance tests among young healthy adults can be questioned as a valid postural control parameter.

Abstract
AIM Extremely low birthweight infants often present with mild neurodevelopmental impairments in gross motor function and postural stability in early childhood. The aim of the study was to undertake a randomised controlled trial to determine the short- and longer-term effects of group-based physiotherapy compared to standard care on performance in extremely low birthweight children with minimal/mild impairment. METHODS Fifty children aged 4 years, born <28 weeks gestation and/or birthweight <1000 g with minimal/mild motor impairment were enrolled in a randomised controlled trial and randomly allocated to 6 weeks of group-based intervention (n = 24) or standard care (n = 26). The intervention consisted of a combination of traditional physiotherapy and task-oriented approaches of approximately 1 h in duration and varied according to each child's strengths and weaknesses. Baseline, post intervention and 1 year post baseline assessments included Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2), single leg stance, lateral reach and long jump. RESULTS Forty-eight (96%) children completed the study, which demonstrated no significant differences between the intervention and standard care groups on any of the assessments. Both groups improved initially from baseline to initial reassessment on the MABC-2 (P < 0.001). For both groups, however, MABC-2 manual dexterity, aiming/catching and total score declined from baseline to 1 year follow-up. However, for both groups, single leg stance and limb strength were significantly improved from baseline to 1 year follow-up. CONCLUSIONS There were no differences in outcomes between groups. Both approaches may contribute to improved short-term performance and longer-term improvements on functional skills in extremely preterm children.

Abstract
The purposes of the present study were a) to establish postural control profiles for individuals 6–12 years of age, b) to analyze the participants’ characteristics (age, sex, weight, height, and physical activity) in those profiles, and c) to analyze the influence of visual information in the profiles found. Two hundred and eight typically developing children aged 6–12 years performed two trials in bipedal standing position with eyes open and closed. Feature extraction involved time, frequency, and sway-density plot variables using signals from the center of pressure. A Self-Organizing Map was used to classify and visualize the values of the participants in all the postural control variables tested. A k-means cluster analysis was applied to generate a small number of postural control profiles. The results determined six postural control profiles; three with participants denoting high stability and three considered as low stability profiles. Age, sex, and height were related to the postural control profiles. Boys were more frequently allocated in high stability clusters than girls, while the other factors yielded unclear difference between high and low stability profiles. The analysis of children’s profiles reflecting postural stability should therefore involve more than one factor including the individuals’ age, sex, and height.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the context of interventions aimed at reducing pain, disability, and maladaptive pain cognitions in chronic neck pain, it is hypothesized that patients who have greater symptom reduction possibly also demonstrate greater improvement in cervical motor output. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of pain neuroscience education plus cognition-targeted motor control training on cervical motor output. METHODS Impairments in cervical motor output were measured in 64 subjects with chronic neck pain using standardized tests. Cervical muscle strength, cervical mobility, balance, and cervical neuromuscular control were derived. To assess the differences between groups in response to treatment, a random-intercept linear mixed-models analysis, applying a diagonal covariance matrix, was used. RESULTS A significant treatment × time interaction effect was found for neuromuscular control of the deep cervical flexors, favoring the experimental treatment at 3 months' follow-up (mean group difference: 1.982; 95% confidence interval 0.779, 3.185; large effect size d = 0.82). Significant main effects of time were found for the neuromuscular capacity of scapulothoracic muscles and for cervical mobility. No significant effects were found for balance, cervical muscle strength, or endurance of cervical flexors. CONCLUSION Pain neuroscience education combined with cognition-targeted motor control training is not more effective than biomedically focused education and exercise therapy for improving cervical motor output in people with chronic neck pain. Our findings question the relative importance of factors such as pain, disability, and maladaptive pain cognitions on cervical motor output and the need to address it in treatment.

Abstract
<b>Introduction</b>: The ability to Reach quickly to changing external stimuli, to move the body quickly and precisely in any direction and to maintain the centre of gravity above the support base, all contribute to maintaining balance in dynamic conditions. The Limits of Stability Test (LOS) provides information on the state of dynamic equilibrium in a standing position.<br> <b>Aim</b> : Assessment of dynamic postural control in developmental age.<br> <b>Material</b> : 127 healthy children (65 girls and 62 boys) aged 6 - 17years. <br> <b>Methods</b>: All children underwent LOS test (posturograph NeuroCom) with registration of reaction time (RT), movement velocity (MVL), directional control (DCL) , maximum excursion (MXE) and endpoint excursion (EPE).<br> <b>Results</b>: At the age of 6-7 years, not fully developed jumping strategy and visual feedback mechanism in the control of movement were observed. All tested parameters were significantly worse in children aged 6 - 9 years. After this period, a significant improvement in TR and MVL was observed, with no significant changes in subsequent age groups while significant improvement in MXE up to 12 , EPE and DCL up to 13 years of age was noted. No significant gender differences were fund in the LOS test parameters. <br> <b>Conclusions</b>: 1 The LOS test showed significantly lower dynamic balance development in children aged 6 - 7 years. 2 The study showed a significant improvement in all parameters of the LOS test up to 13 years of age, which supports the termination of the function at that time.

Abstract
Introduction: Overweight/obese children have postural control differences compared with normal-weight children. Nevertheless, there are not studies that analyze the effect of obesity during the entire period comprised between childhood and adolescence. The objective of this study was to determine the differences in postural control between normal-weight and overweight/obese participants during early and middle childhood and adolescence.
Methods: 359 children were divided into six groups according to age and weight status. Each participant carried out one 30-s trial with eyes open (EO) and one 30-s trial with eyes closed (EC). Center of pressure signals were acquired using a Wii Balance Board. Mean velocity in antero-posterior (MVAP) and medio-lateral (MVML) directions and the 95% confidence interval ellipse area were calculated.
Results: A Mann Whitney U-test showed significant differences between normal-weight and obese 8- to 12-year-old children in MVAP and MVML in both EO and EC. In 13- to 17-year-old adolescents, there were differences between normal-weight and overweight/obese in ellipse area and MVML, both in EO and EC condition. There were no differences in postural stability between normal-weight and overweight/obese 4- to 7-year-old children.
Conclusions: Obesity reduces postural stability only in middle childhood and adolescence but not in early childhood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have demonstrated that children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) exhibit postural instabilities, as well as balance and gait disorders, due to the vestibular dysfunction that they are prone to display as a consequence of inner ear injury. Thus, some experiments have proposed vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs as a treatment to improve these motor skills in children with SNHL. OBJECTIVE Assess the evidence quality of the trials that used vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs to improve the postural control, balance and gait of children with SNHL. METHODS This is a systematic review that surveyed articles in nine databases, published up to July 4, 2019, in any language, using the following inclusion criteria: (1) Randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials. (2) Participants of both groups with clinical diagnosis of SNHL, aged up to 12 years old, with no physical problems, cognitive or neurological impairments, except the vestibular dysfunction. (3) Using vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs to improve the following outcomes: postural control, balance and/or gait. RESULTS Six experiments, including 153 children, met the inclusion criteria of this systematic review. Two randomized controlled trials (45 children) on the postural control exhibited low evidence quality and four others; three randomized and controlled trials (90 children) on the balance and one quasi-randomized (18 children) on the gait demonstrated very low evidence quality, respectively. CONCLUSION There is promising evidence that vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs improve the postural control, balance and gait of children with SNHL. However, due to the methodological limitations of the trials and low quality of current evidence on this topic, the trials results analyzed by this systematic review should be interpreted with caution. Due to the low quality of evidence observed in this review, we suggest that new trials be proposed on this topic, with better methodological quality, to prove the effectiveness of vestibular rehabilitation exercises programs to improve the postural control, balance and gait of children with SNHL.

Abstract
Static (one-legged stance) and dynamic (star excursion balance) postural control tests were performed by 14 adolescent athletes with and 17 without back pain to determine reproducibility. The total displacement, mediolateral and anterior-posterior displacements of the centre of pressure in mm for the static, and the normalized and composite reach distances for the dynamic tests were analysed. Intraclass correlation coefficients, 95% confidence intervals, and a Bland-Altman analysis were calculated for reproducibility. Intraclass correlation coefficients for subjects with (0.54 to 0.65), (0.61 to 0.69) and without (0.45 to 0.49), (0.52 to 0.60) back pain were obtained on the static test for right and left legs, respectively. Likewise, (0.79 to 0.88), (0.75 to 0.93) for subjects with and (0.61 to 0.82), (0.60 to 0.85) for those without back pain were obtained on the dynamic test for the right and left legs, respectively. Systematic bias was not observed between test and retest of subjects on both static and dynamic tests. The one-legged stance and star excursion balance tests have fair to excellent reliabilities on measures of postural control in adolescent athletes with and without back pain. They can be used as measures of postural control in adolescent athletes with and without back pain.

Abstract
Background The new fall risk assessment (FRA) system is a composite and comprehensive assessment tool developed to predict the risk of falls. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the new FRA system’s test-retest reliability and sensitivity to change in community-dwelling older adults. Methods This was an observational study with a test-retest design and an 8-week fall prevention exercise program. A sample of 28 community-dwelling older adults with a mean age of 73.0 years (range, 65–80 years) participated in the study. The new FRA system was administered twice within a 7-day period for test-retest reliability expressed as intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and standard error of measurement (SEM) assessment. Eighteen subjects of them completed the 8-week fall prevention exercise intervention to evaluate the new FRA system’s sensitivity to change. Results In the evaluation of interrater reliability for the new FRA system, the ICC (95% confidence interval) of the total score was 0.77 (0.47–0.98), with good reliability. The SEM was 11.61 for the total FRA score. A good to excellent reliability was observed, with ICC levels of 0.73 to 0.91 for the 4 composite scores of the new FRA system. Following the 8-week exercise intervention, the mean total FRA score (effect size, 0.58) significantly increased (p=0.028). Conclusion The new FRA system has generally moderate to excellent interrater reliability and reliable sensitivity to change in community-dwelling older adults. Our findings provide support for the reliability of the new FRA system in healthy older adults without a fall history.

Abstract
Background Postural control may be impaired in children with foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The study assessed the protocol feasibility in terms of (1) recruiting children with FASD in a rural, small town; (2) using the measurement instruments in a real-life setting; (3) the one-leg standing (OLS) task and (4) presenting preliminary results on postural stability of children with and without FASD. Methods Nine-year-old children diagnosed with and without FASD were invited to participate. Twenty-eight children performed OLS. Feasibility outcomes included recruitment, measurement instrument use and task instruction. Postural stability outcomes included standing duration, centre of pressure (COP) and body segment acceleration. Results Participants recruitment was feasible in terms of the (1) ability to sample a reasonable participant number in a rural town setting and the capacity to increase the sample size if more schools are included in the sampling frame and (2) use of assent and consent forms that were appropriate for this population. The measurement instruments were user-friendly, cost-effective and time-efficient. Instructions for the task require amendment to address foot placement of the non-weight–bearing leg. There was a significant difference between cases and controls on mean COP velocity (p = 0.001) and the pelvis segment acceleration in the mediolateral direction (p = 0.01) and the anteroposterior direction (p = 0.027). The control children took longer to achieve postural control. The girls demonstrated a significant difference for the COP anteroposterior displacement (p = 0.008) and velocity (p = 0.049). Conclusions The recruitment of children with and without FASD in a rural, small town and the administration of measurement instruments in a real-life, school-based setting was feasible. However, the verbal instructions for the task require revision. The male control group took longer to achieve postural control because the task was performed differently between the two groups. However, the case girls were slower to achieve postural control than control girls though performing the task similarly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excess body weight during childhood causes reduced motor functionality and problems in postural control, a negative influence which has been reported in the literature. Nevertheless, no information regarding the effect of body composition on the postural control of overweight and obese children is available. The objective of this study was therefore to establish these relationships. METHODS A cross-sectional design was used to establish relationships between body composition and postural control variables obtained in bipedal eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions in twenty-two children. Centre of pressure signals were analysed in the temporal and frequency domains. Pearson correlations were applied to establish relationships between variables. Principal component analysis was applied to the body composition variables to avoid potential multicollinearity in the regression models. These principal components were used to perform a multiple linear regression analysis, from which regression models were obtained to predict postural control. FINDINGS Height and leg mass were the body composition variables that showed the highest correlation with postural control. Multiple regression models were also obtained and several of these models showed a higher correlation coefficient in predicting postural control than simple correlations. These models revealed that leg and trunk mass were good predictors of postural control. More equations were found in the eyes-open than eyes-closed condition. INTERPRETATION Body weight and height are negatively correlated with postural control. However, leg and trunk mass are better postural control predictors than arm or body mass. Finally, body composition variables are more useful in predicting postural control when the eyes are open.

Abstract
The link between gait parameters and hearing loss is not well understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the gait ground reaction forces, their time to peak, vertical loading rate, impulses and free moment during gait in deaf and hearing children. Thirty male children were equally divided into a healthy group and a group with hearing loss problems (Deaf group). Ground reaction forces were analyzed during barefoot walking. MANOVA test was used for between group comparisons. The significance level was set at p<0.05 for all analyses. Hearing loss was associated with increased propulsion lateral-medial ground reaction force (p=0.031), its time to peak (p=0.008), and lateral- medial impulse (p=0.018). Similar vertical reaction forces were observed in both groups (p>0.05). Positive peak of free moments in the healthy group was significantly greater than that in the deaf group (p=0.004). In conclusion, the results reveal that gait ground reaction force components in deaf children may have clinical values for rehabilitation of these subjects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Head movements are controlled by the vestibular system. Children with sensorineural hearing loss can present restrictions in ampleness of head movements due to damage in the vestibule-cochlear systems, resulting from injury in the inner ear. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the ampleness of head movements of children with normal hearing and children with sensorineural hearing loss and compare data between groups. METHODS Cross-sectional study that evaluated the ampleness of head movements of 96 students, being 48 with normal hearing and 48 with sensorineural hearing loss, of both sexes, with aged between 7 and 18 years old. The performance of ampleness of head movements was analyzed by a manual goniometric evaluation, according the references proposed by Marques. To the statistical analysis we used the t-Student test in case of normality of the data or the Mann-Whitney test when did not applied the suppositions of normality. RESULTS Hearing loss children showed less mean in ampleness of all movements of head compared to normal hearing children, pointing difference to movements of flexion (p = 0,001), lateral inclination to the right (p = 0,025) and lateral rotation to the left (p = 0,021). CONCLUSION Hearing loss children showed reduction in the ampleness of these head movements: flexion, lateral inclination to the right and lateral rotation to the left compared to normal hearing children.

Abstract
In 1995, David Winter concluded that postural analysis of upright stance was often restricted to studying the trajectory of the center of pressure (CoP). However, postural control means regulation of the center of mass (CoM) with respect to CoP. As CoM is only accessible by using a biomechanical model of the human body, the present article proposes to determine which models are actually used in postural analysis, twenty years after Winter's observation. To do so, a selection of 252 representative articles dealing with upright posture and published during the four last years has been checked. It appears that the CoP model largely remains the most common one (accounting for nearly two thirds of the selection). Other models, CoP/CoM and segmental models (with one, two or more segments) are much less used. The choice of the model does not appear to be guided by the population studied. Conversely, while some confusion remains between postural control and the associated concepts of stability or strategy, this choice is better justified for real methodological concerns when dealing with such high-level parameters. Finally, the computation of the CoM continues to be a limitation in achieving a more complete postural analysis. This unfortunately implies that the model is chosen for technological reasons in many cases (choice being a euphemism here). Some effort still has to be made so that bioengineering developments allow us to go beyond this limit.

Abstract
AIM Identifying balance problems are the first step towards monitoring and rehabilitation. Therefore, this paper aims to make an overview of the psychometric properties of the functional balance tests available for children. METHOD A literature search was performed in PubMED and Web of Science on 8 February 2014 and updated on 6 July 2014. A conceptual framework for functional balance tests was defined, taking balance control components and task constraints into account. The tests were selected for inclusion by consensus of 2-3 reviewers using the conceptual framework. RESULTS Fourteen tests were investigated in 25 articles and analysed within the conceptual framework. The Timed Up and Go test, Pediatric Balance Scale, and Pediatric Reach Test are well investigated and all show good reliability. Validity remains unclear because of lack of a criterion standard to measure balance control. INTERPRETATION Because of the lack of good methodological studies, strong evidence for the use of one or more functional balance tests in children cannot be provided. Moreover, it is necessary that a criterion standard to measure balance is established.

Abstract
Introduction Head sense position is coordinated by sensory activity of the vestibular system, located in the inner ear. Children with sensorineural hearing loss may show changes in the vestibular system as a result of injury to the inner ear, which can alter the sense of head position in this population. Aim Analyze the head alignment in students with normal hearing and students with sensorineural hearing loss and compare the data between groups. Methods This prospective cross-sectional study examined the head alignment of 96 students, 48 with normal hearing and 48 with sensorineural hearing loss, aged between 7 and 18 years. The analysis of head alignment occurred through postural assessment performed according to the criteria proposed by Kendall et al. For data analysis we used the chi-square test or Fisher exact test. Results The students with hearing loss had a higher occurrence of changes in the alignment of the head than normally hearing students (p < 0.001). Forward head posture was the type of postural change observed most, occurring in greater proportion in children with hearing loss (p < 0.001), followed by the side slope head posture (p < 0.001). Conclusion Children with sensorineural hearing loss showed more changes in the head posture compared with children with normal hearing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extremely preterm or extremely low birth weight (ELBW) children who are non-disabled and otherwise healthy are at risk of neurodevelopmental impairments. Further understanding of these impairments is needed before commencement of formal education to optimise participation levels at a critical time point for these children. AIMS To explore motor co-ordination, postural stability, limb strength and behaviour of non-disabled four to five year old children with a history of extreme prematurity or ELBW. STUDY DESIGN Prospective-descriptive-cohort-study. SUBJECTS 50 children born at less than 28 weeks gestation or who had a birth weight less than 1000g with minimal/mild motor impairments and no significant neurological/cognitive impairments. OUTCOME MEASURES Movement Assessment Battery for Children second-edition (MABC-2), single leg stance test (SLS), lateral reach test, standing long jump test and Child Behaviour Checklist for preschool children (CBCL). RESULTS The mean percentile rank of the extremely preterm or ELBW sample on MABC-2 was 31% (SD 23%). SLS right (mean ± SD; 4.6 ± 2.5s) and lateral reach to the right (10.0 ± 3.9 cm) were slightly stronger than SLS left (4.4 ± 3.3s) and lateral reach left (9.9 ± 3.5 cm). The average for standing long jump was 71.6 cm (SD 21.0 cm). All participants were classified as 'normal' on CBCL syndrome scale scores, internalizing and externalizing syndrome T scores and total problem T score. CONCLUSIONS This sample of non-disabled extremely preterm or ELBW children performed in the lower range of normal. These children continue to be at risk of impairments, therefore, ongoing monitoring and tailored intervention may optimise development.

Abstract
Children with hearing impairment have balance and motor deficits primarily due to concomitant damage to the vestibular structures. Although early intervention focused on the development of communication skills, investigations of intervention for the amelioration of balance deficits in children with hearing loss have been minimal and inconclusive. Therefore, using an experimental design, the present study investigated the effect of a 12-session exercise balance program based on proprioception training on balance and gait in deaf as compared with hearing schoolchildren. The subjects, 10 deaf and 10 typically developing children were assigned to an experimental and a control group respectively. Taking up the initial differences between the groups through a pretest under different conditions, the participants in the experimental group went through a 12-session intervention program including static and dynamic training with emphasis on proprioceptive system. After this, the participants were tested again. The data obtained was analyzed using repeated measure. A comparison between the control and experimental groups revealed that the intervention program had not significantly increased gait velocity while it had significantly decreased the amount of sway. Thus, it was concluded that an exercise program that enhances somatosensory ability can result in improved balance in deaf children.

Abstract
According to the scientific reports the postural stability is inseparably associated with hearing organ's correct functioning. The aim of the study was to evaluate the degree of disorders occurring in balance reactions in this group of children with profound hearing loss compared to their healthy peers. The study worked with a total of 228 children, including 65 who are deaf (DCH) and 163 subjects without any hearing deficits (CON) in the control group. Stabilometric measurements were performed with the use of a force distribution platform. The results indicate statistically significant differences in terms of one parameter (the total path length) recorded in the test with the eyes open and a whole range of parameters recorded when the subjects had their eyes closed (the width, height, and area of the ellipse, the total path length, and the horizontal and vertical sway). The study results showed better values of the static balance parameters in deaf children as compared to their peers without hearing disorders and the differences were particularly evident in the test with the subject's eyes closed. The results suggest significantly better processing of sensory stimuli in postural reactions particularly from propioception, and to a lesser extent, from the vision system observed in the subjects as compared to their peers in the control group.

Abstract
Although many studies have been carried out regarding postural stability during pediatric age, reliable information and a complete analysis of all age groups are still lacking. The purpose of this study was to verify the test-retest reliability of posturographic parameters in four sensory conditions and provide normative values for children and young adolescents. 289 subjects, aged 6-14 years, were assessed by means of the static posturography system SVeP. 173 elementary school pupils (114 males and 59 females, aged 6-10 years; mean age 8.80 ± 1.53) and 116 middle school students (60 males and 56 females, aged 11-14 years; mean age 12.6 ± 0.9) underwent static posturography in two consecutive trials with four testing conditions: eyes open and eyes closed with and without foam pads. The participants were divided into nine age groups. Thirty healthy young adults were also recruited for comparison. The analysis of test-retest reliability demonstrated an excellent reliability of velocity measurement and a moderate reliability of area measurement. Velocity and area decreased significantly with age in all sensory conditions, indicating an improvement in postural control from childhood to adolescence. Postural stability had not reached the adult level by the age of 13-14 years. Reliable information regarding postural stability can be obtained in children and young adolescents by means of stabilometric parameters. These data can be used as a reference for early detection of atypical postural development and for the assessment of dizziness and balance disorders in children.

Abstract
Maintaining standing postural balance is important for walking and handling abilities in patients with cerebral palsy. This study included 23 patients with cerebral palsy (seven with spastic diplegia and 16 with spastic hemiplegia), aged from 7 to 16 years of age. Standing posture balance measurements were performed using an AMTI model OR6-7 force platform with the eyes open and closed. Patients with diplegic cerebral palsy exhibited greater center of pressure displacement areas with the eyes open and greater center of pressure sway in the medial-lateral direction with the eyes open and closed compared with hemiplegic patients. Thus, diplegic patients exhibited weaker postural balance control ability and less standing stability compared with hemiplegic cerebral palsy patients.

Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: A postura é determinada pela atuação dos sistemas visual, somatossensorial e vestibular, situado na orelha interna. Crianças com perda auditiva sensório-neural podem apresentar problemas na regulação do controle postural, favorecendo o surgimento de desvios e alterações posturais na coluna vertebral, provocados, possivelmente, pela hipoatividade do sistema vestibular, em decorrência da lesão na orelha interna. OBJETIVOS: Identificar e comparar a distribuição de alterações posturais na coluna vertebral em escolares surdos e ouvintes na faixa etária entre 7 e 17 anos. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Este estudo analítico, observacional, de corte transversal analisou a postura da coluna vertebral de 44 escolares com perda auditiva sensório-neural e 44 escolares ouvintes, de ambos os gêneros. O estudo foi desenvolvido por meio de uma avaliação postural, com o uso de um simetrógrafo, segundo os critérios propostos por Kendall et al. RESULTADOS: Observou-se uma maior ocorrência de alterações posturais nos escolares surdos, se comparados aos ouvintes (surdos: 100%; ouvintes: 84,1%), p = 0,012. A escoliose foi a alteração postural mais observada em ambos os grupos (surdos: 84,1%; ouvintes: 59,1%), p = 0,009, seguida da hipercifose torácica (surdos: 68,2%; ouvintes: 45,5%), p = 0,031. CONCLUSÃO: Os escolares surdos apresentaram uma probabilidade ainda maior quando comparados aos escolares ouvintes de desenvolver alterações posturais na coluna vertebral. Tal condição pode ter relação com o acometimento do sistema vestibular, em decorrência da lesão na orelha interna, de maus hábitos posturais em atividades diárias e da ergonomia desfavorável do ambiente escolar.
