Different response of alpine meadow and alpine steppe to climatic and anthropogenic disturbance on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Monitoring and Analysis of Water Level–Water Storage Capacity Changes in Ngoring Lake Based on Multisource Remote Sensing Data

Mastering the fluctuation of water levels and the water storage capacity of plateau lakes is greatly important for monitoring the water balance of the Tibetan Plateau and predicting regional and global climate change. The water level of plateau lakes is difficult to measure, and the ground measured data of long-time series are difficult to obtain. Ngoring Lake is considered in this study, using spaceborne single-photon lidar ICESat-2/ATL13 inland lake standard data products, the water level values provided by Hydroweb laboratory, and the image data of an optical remote sensing satellite. A new method is proposed in the absence of measured data. The method uses multisource remote sensing data to estimate the long-term changes in the water levels, surface area, and water storage capacity of Ngoring Lake in the past three decades. The results show that the water level values of ICESat-2 and Hydroweb on overlapping observation days are highly correlated, with R2 = 0.9776, MAE = 0.420 m, RMSE = 0.077 m, and the average absolute height difference is 0.049 m. The fusion of multiple altimetry data can obtain more continuous long-time series water-level observation results. From 1992 to 2021, the water body information of Ngoring Lake basin fluctuated greatly and showed different variation characteristics in different time periods. The lowest water level in January 1997 was approximately 4268.49 m, and it rose to its highest in October 2009, approximately 4272.44 m. The change in the water level in the basin was mainly affected by natural factors, such as precipitation, air temperature, and human activities. The analysis shows that ICESat-2 can be combined with other remote sensing data to realize the long-time series dynamic monitoring of plateau lakes, showing great advantages in the comprehensive observation of plateau lakes in no man’s land.

Influence of Anthropogenic Activities and Major Natural Factors on Vegetation Changes in Global Alpine Regions

Understanding vegetation changes and their driving forces in global alpine areas is critical in the context of climate change. We aimed to reveal the changing trend in global alpine vegetation from 1981 to 2015 using the least squares regression method and Mann-Kendall (MK) test. The area-of-influence dominated by anthropogenic activity and natural factors was determined in an area with significant vegetation change by residual analysis; the primary driving force of vegetation change in the area-of-influence dominated by natural factors was identified using the partial correlation method. The results showed that (1) the vegetation in the global alpine area exhibited a browning trend from 1981 to 2015 on the annual scale; however, a greening trend was observed from May to July on the month scale. (2) The influence of natural factors was greater than that of anthropogenic activities, and the positive impact of natural factors was greater than the negative impact. (3) Among the factors that were often considered as the main natural factors, the contribution of albedo to significant changes in vegetation were greater than that of temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, and sunshine duration. This study provides a scientific basis for the protection of vegetation and sustainable development in alpine regions.

Information entropy and elasticity analysis of the land use structure change influencing eco-environmental quality in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 1990 to 2015

Regional land use change affects eco-environmental quality by altering ecosystem structure and function. The primitive ecosystem and environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) occupies a special position in the world, but it is very fragile. Although land use activities on the plateau have increased gradually in past decades, its effects on eco-environmental quality and the underlying mechanisms of regional heterogeneity remain unclear. In this study, an eco-environmental quality assessment index system was established to characterize the QTP, and the information entropy and elasticity methods were introduced to quantify the impact of land use dynamic trajectory on the eco-environmental quality. It provides a statistical measurement of system structure and more information than the traditional methods to reveal the land use change. The area change in land use on QTP was small from 1990 to 2015. The unused land and forest decreased, but those of grassland, water body, built-up land, and cultivated land increased. The overall eco-environmental quality on the QTP was low, and increased at a rate of 9.39% over the past 25 years, presenting a distribution of decreasing from southeast to northwest. The improvement in eco-environmental quality attributed to land use change was mainly due to the conversion of unused land into grassland, and ecological conservation projects also improved the local ecological environment. Conversely, the expansion of built-up land and land degradation contributed to decline in local eco-environmental quality in the Hengduan Mountains, northeastern plateau, and Qaidam Basin. The results indicated that under the influence of climate change, the changes in land use and eco-environmental quality were inconsistent in part regions, mainly including the central and southern Tibet and the border zone. Regions in which eco-environmental quality has been degraded by unreasonable land use are urgent to optimize land use management.
