Abstract
BACKGROUND The absence of clinically-validated biomarkers or objective protocols hinders effective major depressive disorder (MDD) diagnosis. Compared to healthy control (HC), MDD exhibits anomalies in plasma protein levels and neuroimaging presentations. Despite extensive machine learning studies in psychiatric diagnosis, a reliable tool integrating multi-modality data is still lacking. METHODS In this study, blood samples from 100 MDD and 100 HC were analyzed, along with MRI images from 46 MDD and 49 HC. Here, we devised a novel algorithm, integrating graph neural networks and attention modules, for MDD diagnosis based on inflammatory cytokines, neurotrophic factors, and Orexin A levels in the blood samples. Model performance was assessed via accuracy and F1 value in 3-fold cross-validation, comparing with 9 traditional algorithms. We then applied our algorithm to a dataset containing both the aforementioned protein quantifications and neuroimages, evaluating if integrating neuroimages into the model improves performance. RESULTS Compared to HC, MDD showed significant alterations in plasma protein levels and gray matter volume revealed by MRI. Our new algorithm exhibited superior performance, achieving an F1 value and accuracy of 0.9436 and 94.08 %, respectively. Integration of neuroimaging data enhanced our novel algorithm's performance, resulting in an improved F1 value and accuracy, reaching 0.9543 and 95.06 %. LIMITATIONS This single-center study with a small sample size requires future evaluations on a larger test set for improved reliability. CONCLUSIONS In comparison to traditional machine learning models, our newly developed MDD diagnostic model exhibited superior performance and showed promising potential for inclusion in routine clinical diagnosis for MDD.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of hepatitis B virus (HBV) associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), analyse the risk factors associated with HBV-associated HCC, and to provide some references to the diagnosis and treatment of HCC. Methods This study retrospectively enrolled 730 patients, including 390 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) as controls, and 340 patients with CHB complicated with HCC as patients. Relevant information and medical records of these participants were collected, including age, sex, cigarette smoking, alcoholism, diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, coronary heart disease (CHD), cirrhosis, occupation, ascites, HBV-DNA load, the qualitative analysis of HBsAg, HBsAb, HBeAg, HBeAb, and HBcAb serological markers, and levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), TNM stage, tumor size and tumor number. The T test, Chi-square test, non-parametric rank-sum test, logistic regression analyses were used to explore the influencing factors and their degree of association with HCC in patients with HBV. Results The proportion of smoking, alcoholism, married status, DM, hypertension, and the rate of HBV-DNA with a viral load of ≥500 copies/mL were significantly higher in the HCC group than in the controls (all p<0.05). Cirrhosis was more common among patients with CHB+HCC than in controls (p=0.013). The proportion of patients with HBsAg, HBeAb, and HBcAb positive was greater in CHB+HCC group than that in CHB group. Logistic regression analysis indicated that age ≥60 years (OR: 1.835, 95% CI: 1.020-3.302, p=0.043), HBeAb positive (OR: 9.105, 95% CI: 4.796-17.288, p<0.001), antiviral treatment with entecavir (OR: 2.209, 95% CI: 1.106-4.409, p=0.025), and GGT (OR: 1.004, 95% CI: 1.001-1.007, p=0.002) were risk factors for HCC in patients with CHB. Conclusion Advanced age, HBeAb positive, antiviral treatment with entecavir, and GGT were independent risk factors for HCC in HBV patients.

Abstract
Hypocretin is synthesized exclusively in the hypothalamus and distributes inputs to several areas of the brain, which may play an important role in depression. Our previous study showed that hypocretin-1 was increased in the lateral hypothalamus in female patients with depression compared to female controls. Estrogen acts through estrogen receptor (ER)α and ERβ. We studied the possibility of a direct action of estrogen receptors on the expression of human hypocretin. We found that hypocretin-1 plasma levels were significantly higher in female patients with depression than in female controls. Female depression estrogen receptors and hypocretin are colocalized in the human lateral hypothalamus, PC12, and SK-N-SH cells. The estrogen receptor response elements (ERE) that exist in the hypocretin promoter region may directly regulate the gene expression of hypocretin. The synchronicity of change of hypocretin and estradiol both in hypothalamus and plasma was verified in female rats. In the presence of estradiol, specific binding occurs between the recombinant human ER and hypocretin-ERE. Expression of ER combined with estradiol repressed hypocretin promoter activity via the ERE. In conclusion, we found that estradiol may directly affect hypocretin neurons in the human hypothalamus via ER binding to the hypocretin-ERE, which may lead to the sex-specific pathogenesis of depression.

Abstract
PURPOSE The impact of psychological factors on the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in humans remains unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) study is a novel approach aimed at unbiased detection of causal effects. Therefore, we conducted a two-sample MR to determine if there is a causal relationship between psychological distress (PD), participation in leisure/social activities of religious groups (LARG), and HCC. METHODS The genetic summary data of exposures and outcome were retrieved from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). We used PD and LARG as exposures and HCC as outcome. Five MR methods were used to investigate the causal relationship between PD, LARG, and HCC. The result of inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was deemed as principal result. Besides, we performed a comprehensive sensitivity analysis to verify the robustness of the results. RESULTS The IVW results showed that PD [odds ratio (OR) 1.006, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.000-1.011, P = 0.033] and LARG (OR 0.994, 95% CI 0.988-1.000, P = 0.035) were causally associated with the incidence of HCC. Sensitivity analysis did not identify any bias in the results. CONCLUSION PD turned out to be a mild risk factor for HCC. In contrast, LARG is a protective factor for HCC. Therefore, it is highly recommended that people with PD are seeking positive leisure activities such as participation in formal religious social activities, which may help them reduce the risk of HCC.

Abstract
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) occurs recurrently during the luteal phase of a woman's menstrual cycle and disappears after menstruation ends. It is characterized by abnormal changes in both the body and mood, and in certain cases, severe disruptions in daily life and even suicidal tendencies. Current drugs for treating PMS, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, do not yield satisfactory results. Orexin, a neuropeptide produced in the lateral hypothalamus, is garnering attention in the treatment of neurological disorders and is believed to modulate the symptoms of PMS. This paper reviews the advancements in research on sleep disturbances, mood changes, and cognitive impairment caused by PMS, and suggests potential pathways for orexin to address these symptoms. Furthermore, it delves into the role of orexin in the molecular mechanisms underlying PMS. Orexin regulates steroid hormones, and the cyclic fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of PMS. Additionally, orexin also modulates the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system and the inflammatory response involved in coordinating the mechanism of PMS. Unraveling the role of orexin in the pathogenesis of PMS will not only aid in understanding the etiology of PMS but also hold implications for orexin as a novel target for treating PMS.

Abstract
Although the neurotoxicity of the common chemical bisphenol A (BPA) to the mouse hippocampus has been often reported, the mechanism underlying BPA-induced depression-like behavior in mice remains unclear. We evaluated BPA's role in inducing depressive-like behavior by exposing male mice to different BPA concentrations (0, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 μg/mL) and using the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). We aimed to identify critical gene and anti-BPA-neurotoxicity compounds using RNA sequencing combined with bioinformatics analysis. Our results showed that 1 μg/mL BPA exposure increased mouse immobility during the FST and TST. Based on BPA-induced hippocampal transcriptome changes, we identified NADH: ubiquinone oxidoreductase subunit AB1 (Ndufab1) as a critical and potential therapeutic target gene, and Ndufab1 mRNA and protein levels were downregulated in the BPA-exposed groups. Furthermore, molecular docking identified phenelzine as a compound that could counteract BPA-related neurotoxicity. Conclusively, our analyses confirmed that BPA triggers depressive behavior in male mice by downregulating Ndufab1 expression and suggested that phenelzine might reduce BPA-induced neurotoxicity.

Abstract
(1) Background: In the treatment of colorectal cancer, it is important to consider different psychosocial factors. Our first objective was to measure the levels of perceived stress in subjects diagnosed with colorectal cancer awaiting potentially curative surgery. Also, we aimed to analyse what coping styles these patients used, how they perceived their illness, and the subsequent influence of these factors on their levels of stress. (2) Methods: Stress, coping styles and illness perception were assessed in a sample of 107 patients. The instruments used were the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14), the Stress Coping Questionnaire (SCQ) and the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ-R). (3) Results: Patients using active coping styles have lower levels of perceived stress (p = 0.000; p = 0.002) than patients making use of passive coping styles (p = 0.000; p = 0.032; p = 0.001). A multi-linear regression model found that the perception of illness and the use of the negative approach coping style (p = 0.000; p = 0.001) influence an increase in perceived stress, and that a decrease in stress levels was influenced by the problem solving coping style (p = 0.001). (4) Conclusions: Based on our results, we recommend preventive interventions in care patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery.
