Effects of vitamin D in pregnancy on maternal and offspring health-related outcomes: An umbrella review of systematic review and meta-analyses

BACKGROUND

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked with several adverse maternal and fetal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE

To summarize systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating the effects of vitamin D deficiency and of vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy on maternal and offspring health-related outcomes.

METHODS

Prior to conducting this umbrella review, we registered the protocol in PROSPERO (CRD42022368003). We conducted searches in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on vitamin D in pregnancy, from database inception to October 2, 2023. All outcomes related to vitamin D in pregnancy obtained from the systematic reviews and meta-analyses were extracted.

DATA EXTRACTION

Two reviewers independently chose studies and collected information on health outcomes. The quality of the included articles' methodology was assessed using AMSTAR 2 (A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews-2).

RESULTS

We identified 16 eligible systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which included 250,569 women. Our results demonstrated that vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of preterm birth, small-for gestational age/low birth weight infants, recurrent miscarriage, bacterial vaginosis and gestational diabetes mellitus. Vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy increases birth weight, and reduces the risk of maternal pre-eclampsia, miscarriage, and vitamin D deficiency, fetal or neonatal mortality, as well as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and autism spectrum disorder in childhood. In women with gestational diabetes mellitus, vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy can reduce the risk of maternal hyperbilirubinemia, polyhydramnios, macrosomia, fetal distress, and neonatal hospitalization.

CONCLUSION

Due to the association with adverse maternal and offspring health outcomes, we recommend the vitamin D status in pregnancy should be monitored, particularly in women at high risk of vitamin D deficiency. It is suggested that pregnant women take a dose of >400 IU/day of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy to prevent certain adverse outcomes.

Identification of hub genes in placental dysfunction and recurrent pregnancy loss through transcriptome data mining: A meta-analysis

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is a condition characterized by the loss of two or more pregnancies before 20 weeks of gestation. The causes of RPL are complex and can be due to a variety of factors, including genetic, immunological, hormonal, and environmental factors. This transcriptome data mining study was done to explore the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and related pathways responsible for pathogenesis of RPL using an Insilco approach. RNAseq datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to extract RNAseq datasets of RPL. Meta-analysis was done by ExpressAnalyst. The functional and pathway enrichment analysis of DEGs were performed using KEGG and BINGO plugin of Cytoscape software. Protein-protein interaction was done using STRING and hub genes were identified. A total of 91 DEGs were identified, out of which 10 were downregulated and 81 were upregulated. Pathway analysis indicated that majority of DEGs were enriched in immunological pathways (IL-17 signalling pathway, TLR-signalling pathway, autoimmune thyroid disease), angiogenic VEGF-signalling pathway and cell-cycle signalling pathways. Of these, 10 hub genes with high connectivity were selected (CXCL8, CCND1, FOS, PTGS2, CTLA4, THBS1, MMP2, KDR, and CD80). Most of these genes are involved in maintenance of immune response at maternal-fetal interface. Further, in functional enrichment analyses revealed the highest node size in regulation of biological processes followed by cellular processes, their regulation and regulation of multicellular organismal process. This in-silico transcriptomics meta-analysis findings could potentially contribute in identifying novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for RPL, which could lead to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for this condition.

microRNA-378a-3p plays a regulatory role in trophoblast cell function in preeclampsia by targeting CMTM3

BACKGROUND

Preeclampsia (PE) is a potential multisystemic disease in the middle and late pregnancy. Although its precise etiology and pathogenesis remain unknown, it is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in both pregnant women and newborns. This study explored the effects of the miR-378a-3p/CKLF-like MARVEL transmembrane domain containing 3 (CMTM3) upon the trophoblast biological functions in PE.

METHODS

The placental pathology of PE were identified by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and miR-378a-3p expression in placental tissues of PE was verified by RT-qPCR. Trophoblast cells (HTR-8/SVneo and JEG-3) were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, flow cytometry, scratch assay, and Transwell assay were carried out to measure cell viability, apoptosis, migratory and invasive capacities, respectively. Western blot was performed to determine the expression levels of the cell migration-related proteins. The binding of miR-378a-3p to CMTM3 was verified through a dual-luciferase reporter gene assay.

RESULTS

miR-378a-3p expression levels were down-regulated in placental tissues and primary trophoblast cells from women with PE compared to the control group. The overexpression of miR-378a-3p promoted the capabilities of LPS-treated trophoblast cells to proliferate, migrate and invade. In contrast, it impeded cell apoptosis, promoted matrix metallopeptidase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 expression and inhibiting TIMP metallopeptidase inhibitor (TIMP)-1 and TIMP-2 expression. Regarding the molecular mechanism, miR-378a-3p was chosen as the target to modulate the expression level of CMTM3. CMTM3 expression was increased in placental tissues and primary trophoblast cells from women with PE compared to the control group. CMTM3 overexpression could partially neutralize the effects of the overexpressed miR-378a-3p on trophoblast cell function and the expression levels of migration-associated proteins.

CONCLUSION

Our study provides a foundation for miRNA-targeted therapy for preeclampsia by establishing for the first time a potential role for the miR-378a-3p/CMTM3 axis in regulating trophoblast cell activities by altering the expression of migration-related proteins.

Estrogen-sensitive activation of SGK1 induces M2 macrophages with anti-inflammatory properties and a Th2 response at the maternal-fetal interface

BACKGROUND

Decidual macrophages participate in immune regulation at the maternal-fetal interface. Abnormal M1/M2 polarization of decidual macrophages might predispose immune maladaptation in recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). However, the mechanism of decidual macrophage polarization is unclear. We explored the role of Estradiol (E₂)-sensitive serum-glucocorticoid regulated kinase (SGK) 1 in promoting macrophage polarization and suppressing inflammation at the maternal-fetal interface.

METHODS

We assessed serum levels of E₂ and progesterone during first trimester of pregnancy in women with or without threatened miscarriages (ended in live birth, n = 448; or early miscarriages, n = 68). For detection of SGK1 in decidual macrophages, we performed immunofluorescence labeling and western blot analysis applying decidual samples from RPL (n = 93) and early normal pregnancy (n = 66). Human monocytic THP-1 cells were differentiated into macrophages and treated with Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 ligand lipopolysaccharide (LPS), E₂, inhibitors or siRNA for in vitro analysis. Flow cytometry analysis were conducted to detect macrophages polarization. We also applied ovariectomized (OVX) mice with hormones exploring the mechanisms underlying the regulation of SGK1 activation by E₂ in the decidual macrophages in vivo.

RESULTS

SGK1 expression down regulation in the decidual macrophages of RPL was consistent with the lower concentration and slower increment of serum E₂ from 4 to 12 weeks of gestation seen in these compromised pregnancies. LPS reduced SGK1 activities, but induced the pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype of THP-1 monocyte-derived macrophages and T helper (Th) 1 cytokines that favored pregnancy loss. E₂ pretreatment promoted SGK1 activation in the decidual macrophages of OVX mice in vivo. E₂ pretreatment amplified SGK1 activation in TLR4-stimulated THP-1 macrophages in vitro through the estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) and PI3K pathway. E₂-sensitive activation of SGK1 increased M2 macrophages and Th2 immune responses, which were beneficial to successful pregnancy, by inducing ARG1 and IRF4 transcription, which are implicated in normal pregnancy. The experiments on OVX mice have shown that pharmacological inhibition of E₂ promoted nuclear translocation of NF-κB in the decidual macrophages. Further more, pharmacological inhibition or knockdown of SGK1 in TLR4-stimulated THP-1 macrophages activated NF-κB by promoting its nuclear translocation, leading to increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in pregnancy loss.

CONCLUSION

Our findings highlighted the immunomodulatory roles of E₂-activated SGK1 in Th2 immune responses by priming anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages at the maternal-fetal interface, resulting in a balanced immune microenvironment during pregnancy. Our results suggest new perspectives on future preventative strategies for RPL.

Snail mediates GDF-8-stimulated human extravillous trophoblast cell invasion by upregulating MMP2 expression

BACKGROUND

Extravillous trophoblast (EVT) cell invasion is a tightly regulated process that requires for a normal pregnancy. The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has been implicated in EVT cell invasion. Growth differentiation factor-8 (GDF-8), a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily, is expressed in the human placenta and promotes EVT cell invasion by upregulating the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2). However, the underlying molecular mechanism of GDF-8-induced MMP2 expression remains undetermined. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the role of Snail and Slug, the EMT-related transcriptional regulators, in GDF-8-stimulated MMP2 expression and cell invasion in HTR-8/SVneo human EVT cell line and primary cultures of human EVT cells.

METHODS

HTR-8/SVneo and primary cultures of human EVT cells were used to examine the effect of GDF-8 on MMP2 expression and explore the underlying mechanism. For gene silencing and overexpression, the HTR-8/SVneo cell line was used to make the experiments more technically feasible. The cell invasiveness was measured by Matrigel-coated transwell invasion assay.

RESULTS

GDF-8 stimulated MMP2 expression in both HTR-8/SVneo and primary EVT cells. The stimulatory effect of GDF-8 on MMP2 expression was blocked by the inhibitor of TGF-β type-I receptors, SB431542. Treatment with GDF-8 upregulated Snail and Slug expression in both HTR-8/SVneo and primary EVT cells. The stimulatory effects of GDF-8 on Snail and Slug expression were blocked by pretreatment of SB431542 and siRNA-mediated knockdown of SMAD4. Interestingly, using the siRNA knockdown approach, our results showed that Snail but not Slug was required for the GDF-8-induced MMP2 expression and cell invasion in HTR-8/SVneo cells. The reduction of MMP2 expression in the placentas with preeclampsia (PE) was also observed.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings discover the physiological function of GDF-8 in the human placenta and provide important insights into the regulation of MMP2 expression in human EVT cells. Video Abstract.

Association between history of miscarriage and autism spectrum disorder

This case-control study was designed to examine the association between different types of miscarriage history and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and determine whether the number of miscarriage history affects the risk of ASD. All of 2274 children with ASD and 1086 healthy controls were recruited. Sociodemographic and prenatal, perinatal, and neonatal characteristics were compared between the two groups. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were applied to investigate association between miscarriage history and ASD. Stratified analyses based on sex and types of miscarriages were similarly performed. History of miscarriage was potential risk factors for ASD ([aOR] = 2.919; 95% [CI] = 2.327-3.517). Stratified analyses revealed that induced ([aOR] = 2.763, 95% [CI] = 2.259-3.379) and spontaneous miscarriage history ([aOR] = 3.341, 95% [CI] = 1.939-4.820) were associated with high risk of ASD, respectively. A sex-biased ratio in the risk of ASD was observed between females ([aOR] = 3.049, 95% [CI] = 2.153-4.137) and males ([aOR] = 2.538, 95% [CI] = 1.978-3.251). Stratified analysis of induced miscarriage history revealed that only iatrogenic miscarriage history was associated with an increased risk ASD ([aOR] = 2.843, 95% [CI] = 1.534-4.268). Also, multiple spontaneous miscarriage histories ([aOR] = 1.836, 95% [CI] = 1.252-2.693) were associated with higher autism risk than one spontaneous miscarriages history ([aOR] = 3.016, 95% [CI] = 1.894-4.174). In conclusion, miscarriage history is related to an increased risk for ASD in offspring, which is affected by the types of miscarriage and sex of the fetus.

MMP2 rs243866 and rs2285053 Polymorphisms and Alzheimer’s Disease Risk in Slovak Caucasian Population

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterised by progressive loss of memory. In the AD brain, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in the disruption of the blood-brain barrier resulting in a neuroinflammatory response. The objective of our investigation was to assess the association of MMP2 rs243866 and rs2285053 polymorphisms with susceptibility to AD, to assess the interaction of MMP2 variants with APOE ε4 risk allele, and to evaluate their influence on the age at disease onset and MoCA score. A total of 215 late-onset AD patients and 373 control subjects from Slovakia were genotyped for MMP2 rs243866 and rs2285053 polymorphisms. The MMP2 association with AD risk and clinical parameters was evaluated by logistic and linear regression analyses. No statistically significant differences in either MMP2 rs243866 and rs2285053 allele or genotype frequencies between AD patients and the control group have been observed (p > 0.05). However, the correlation with clinical findings revealed a higher age at disease onset in MMP2 rs243866 GG carriers in the dominant model as compared to other MMP2 genotype carriers (p = 0.024). Our results suggest that MMP2 rs243866 promoter polymorphism may have an impact on the age at AD onset in the patients.

Hyperin promotes proliferation, migration, and invasion of HTR-8/SVneo trophoblast cells via activation of JAK1/STAT3 pathway in recurrent spontaneous abortions

The proliferation of extravillous trophoblasts (EVT) and their further migration, invasion, and differentiation into the decidual and myometrial vasculature are vital for spiral artery remodeling. These physiological functions of EVT are also essential steps in the implantation of the human embryo and the formation of the placenta and are closely related to pregnancy maintenance and the occurrence of abortion. Hyperin is a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory, pro-proliferative, and anti-apoptotic properties. Consequently, we investigated the previously unexplored effects of hyperin on the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HTR-8/SVneo cells. Human extravillous trophoblast-derived HTR-8/SVneo cells were incubated with different concentrations of hyperin (0, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 μM) to observe the changes in cell proliferation, migration, invasive capacity, and pathway activation. Proliferation, migration, and invasion were promoted by activating the JAK1/STAT3 pathway in HTR-8/SVneo cells treated with hyperin. In addition, brepocitinib (PF-06700841) significantly inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion effects of hyperin on HTR-8/SVneo cells. In vivo experiments confirmed that hyperin reduces the embryo loss rate in recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) model mice. Furthermore, our study revealed that hyperin promoted the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HTR-8/SVneo cells via activation of the JAK1/STAT3 pathway, further improving pregnancy outcomes in RSA.

Insights into the immunomodulatory regulation of matrix metalloproteinase at the maternal-fetal interface during early pregnancy and pregnancy-related diseases

Trophoblast immune cell interactions are central events in the immune microenvironment at the maternal-fetal interface. Their abnormalities are potential causes of various pregnancy complications, including pre-eclampsia and recurrent spontaneous abortion. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) is highly homologous, zinc(II)-containing metalloproteinase involved in altered uterine hemodynamics, closely associated with uterine vascular remodeling. However, the interactions between MMP and the immune microenvironment remain unclear. Here we discuss the key roles and potential interplay of MMP with the immune microenvironment in the embryo implantation process and pregnancy-related diseases, which may contribute to understanding the establishment and maintenance of normal pregnancy and providing new therapeutic strategies. Recent studies have shown that several tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) effectively prevent invasive vascular disease by modulating the activity of MMP. We summarize the main findings of these studies and suggest the possibility of TIMPs as emerging biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for a range of complications induced by abnormalities in the immune microenvironment at the maternal-fetal interface. MMP and TIMPs are promising targets for developing new immunotherapies to treat pregnancy-related diseases caused by immune imbalance.

Genetic Architecture of Pregnancy Loss: Co-inheritance of Risk Factors in Bosnian Women

Pregnancy-related complications (PRC) re-present a serious public health and healthcare challenge. In European countries, infertility among couples varies from 5 to 24 %. The cause of PRC may include autoimmune and metabolic factors, correctness of the karyotype and variants of selected genes. The impact magnitude of genetic variants in one of PRC, pregnancy loss (PL), is still unexplored. Therefore, in this study, raw data on 12 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were published separately in 2017-2019 were re-examined. We analysed the co-inheritance of 12 SNPs: rs6025 FV, rs429358 and rs7412 ApoE, rs1799752 ACE, rs1799889 PAI-1, rs1799963 PT, rs1801133 MTHFR, rs9468 and rs1800547 INV 17q21.31, rs731236 and rs1544410 VDR, and rs10421768 HAMP. Each time, the same study group of 154 women with PL, mean age 33 (± 5.4) years, and 154 mothers without PL, mean age 31.4 (± 6.7) years, with at least one live-born child, a control group, was investigated. In Bosnian women, no relationship of the co-inheritance pattern of any of the studied variants with PL was confirmed: P was in the range 0.248-1.0. In conclusion, the role of co-inheritance of heterozygotes and homozygotes or homozygotes of selected genes in PL has not been fully confirmed.

The Progress of Research on Genetic Factors of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is both mental and physical health problem affecting about 1-5% of women of childbearing age. The etiology of RPL is complex, involving chromosomal abnormalities, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, and endometrial dysfunction. The causes of abortion are still unknown in more than 50% of these cases. With the development of science and technology, an increasing number of scholars focus on this field and find that genetic factors may play an essential role in unexplained RPL, such as embolism-related genes, immune factor-related genes, and chromosomal numeric, and structural variation. This review summarizes the genetic factors associated with RPL, including genetic mutations and genetic polymorphisms, chromosomal variants, and chromosomal polymorphisms. Many related genetic factors have been found to be demographically and geographically relevant, some of which can be used for risk prediction or screening for the etiology of RPL. However, it is difficult to predict and prevent RPL due to uncertain pathogenesis and highly variable clinical presentation. Therefore, the genetic factors of RPL still need plentiful research to obtain a more accurate understanding of its pathogenesis and to provide more detection means for the screening and prevention of RPL.

Expression and mechanism of micro-ribonucleic acid-29a in chorionic villi obtained at curettage with recurrent abortion

Objective: Explored the expression of miR-29a in puerpera with RSA and its influencing mechanism. Method: 52 patients with RSA group were divided into 30 cases representing ≤3 abortions and 22 cases with ≥4 abortions,thirty healthy women who had induced abortion during the same period as the control group. The differences in the expression levels of miR-29a, FKBP52 mRNA, VEGF, MVD, and HIF-lα were compared between the groups by conducting a correlation analysis. Results: The expression levels of miR-29a, VEGF, MVD, and HIF-lα in the chorionic villus were significantly higher among patients in the group with ≥4 abortions than in those in the group with ≤3 abortions (P < 0.05), and the expression levels of FKBP52 mRNA were lower in the former than in the latter (P < 0.05). A Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the expression levels of miR-29a were positively correlated with the levels of VEGF, MVD, and HIF-lα (P < 0.05) and negatively correlated with the expression level of FKBP52 mRNA (P < 0.05). Conclusion: MiR-29a may be involved in the pathogenesis of RSA by inhibiting the protein expressions of FKBP52 and VEGF, promoting the apoptosis of trophoblasts, and impairing neovascularization, resulting in placental vascular dysplasia..

Role of polymorphisms on the Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: A systematic review, Meta-analysis and bioinformatic analysis

Recurrent miscarriage (RM) is a major reproductive health issue. RM is a multi-factorial disease, and is affected by environmental, genetic, and epigenetic factors. Genetics has a common role in recurrent miscarriage occurrence. It seems that molecular genetics has a great role in RSA incidence. So, in these years, RM has become for a major subject of genetics research. There are many genes that are involved in each phase for successful reproduction. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of all studied polymorphisms in studies on RSA that have not been included in any meta-analysis. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were recruited to investigate the related articles. The systematic review results identified 143 studies worldwide. Thirteen genes have been included in assessing the case-control studies. Sixty-four SNPs were recruited to assess the association between genetic factors and RSA susceptibility. Ninety-two studies containing twenty two SNPs (from 10 genes) were included in the quantitative analysis. Bioinformatic analysis indicated that rs12722482 showed "Damaging Status" by double servers, and rs315952 and rs854560 had "Possibly damaging" status in the PolyPhen-2 server. MethPrimer server indicated that there is "CpG Island" in the rs10895068, rs1130355, and rs41557518 variants, and rs10895068-G allele makes a CpG dinucleotide which can change the gene methylation and result in altering the gene expression. So, further studies on rs12722482 and rs10895068 can demonstrate valuable results. To the best of our knowledge, this systematic review has covered the all studied polymorphisms of HLA-C, HLA-G, PON1, AGTR1, TAFI, FAS, FAS-L, ESR1, PGR, CTLA-4, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-9, and IL1RN for the first time. Also, we did a novel meta-analysis for AGTR1 rs5186, TAFI rs1926447, rs3742264, HLA-G rs1063320, rs1233334, rs1736936, rs2249863, PON1 rs662, rs854560, FAS rs2234767, rs1800682, FAS-L rs763110, ESR1, rs9340799, rs3798759, PGR rs1042838, CTLA4 rs4553808, rs5742909, rs231775, rs3087243, and MMP-2 rs243865 and updated statistical finding for rs2234693 and rs371194629. Rs2234693, rs9340799, rs231775, and rs371194629 demonstrated a significant association with RSA risk. Some variations showed significant association, while further studies are suggested to confirm the results. Finally, Rs4553808 and rs5742909 revealed no significant deviation in the results. It is suggested that these SNPs may be excluded from subsequent case-control studies or other analyses.

Association between serum vitamin D level during pregnancy and recurrent spontaneous abortion: a systematic review and meta-analysis

PROBLEM

Previous studies had shown that there might be an association between serum vitamin D concentrations and the occurrence of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). However, the conclusions remained controversial. The objective of this study was to systematically review the evidence for an epidemiological association between vitamin D and RSA.

METHOD OF STUDY

The literature search was performed in the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Chinese databases. The I² statistic was used to evaluate heterogeneity. Effect sizes were calculated using fixed or random effects models, including standardized mean difference (SMD), odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Then we performed subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis and publication bias analysis.

RESULTS

Fourteen studies from five countries were included. Based on the results, patients with RSA had lower vitamin D levels than controls (SMD = -1.48, 95%CI: -2.01, -0.94, P<0.001), and pregnant women with vitamin D deficiency (VDD) had a higher risk of developing RSA (OR = 4.02, 95%CI: 2.23, 7.25, P<0.001). There was remarkable heterogeneity between studies (I² _SMD = 97.3%, P<0.001; I² _OR = 82.2%, P<0.001). The results of the subgroup analysis suggested that heterogeneity may be caused by the assay method, age and region. Sensitivity analysis showed the analysis results were robust.

CONCLUSION

Patients with RSA had lower serum vitamin D levels than normal pregnant women, and pregnant women with VDD might be at higher risk for RSA. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Association between MMP-2 gene polymorphism and cataract susceptibility: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) polymorphisms have been considered as risk factors of cataracts, but the results still remain controversial. In this study, we have performed a systematic meta-analysis to evaluate the association between MMP-2 polymorphisms and cataract risks.

METHODS

Published literature was retrieved from Wanfang, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chongqing VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. The case-control studies that explored the association between MMP-2 polymorphisms and cataract risks were included. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using random- or fixed-effects model.

RESULTS

This study could provide high-quality and evidence-based medical evidence for the correlation between MMP-2 polymorphisms and cataract risks.

CONCLUSION

The study could provide updated evidence for the evaluation of the relationship between MMP-2 polymorphism and cataract risk.

The private information from individuals will not be published. This systematic review also will not involve endangering participant rights. Ethical approval is not available. The results may be published in a peer-reviewed journal or disseminated in relevant conferences.
