Abstract
Fistulas in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract are complex conditions associated with elevated morbidity and mortality. They may arise as a result of inflammatory or malignant processes or following medical procedures, including endoscopic and surgical interventions. The management of upper GI is often challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Accurate diagnosis, including endoscopic and radiological evaluations, is crucial to build a proper and personalized therapeutic plan, that should take into account patient's clinical conditions, time of onset, size, and anatomical characteristics of the defect. In recent years, several endoscopic techniques have been introduced for the minimally invasive management of upper GI fistulas, including through-the-scope and over-the-scope clips, stents, endoscopic suturing, endoluminal vacuum therapy (EVT), tissue adhesives, endoscopic internal drainage. This review aims to discuss and detail the current available endoscopic techniques for the treatment of upper GI fistulas.

Abstract
Esophagectomy is a technically complex operation performed for both benign and malignant esophageal disease. Medical and surgical advancements have led to improved outcomes in esophagectomy patients over the past several decades; however, surgeons must remain vigilant as complications happen often and can be severe. Post-esophagectomy complications can be grouped into early and late categories. The aim of this review is to discuss the early complications of esophagectomy along with their risk factors, work-up, and management strategies with special attention given to anastomotic leaks.

Abstract
Upper gastrointestinal postsurgical leaks are challenging to manage and often require radiological, endoscopic, or surgical intervention. Nowadays, endoscopy is considered the first-line approach for their management, however, there is no definite consensus on the most appropriate therapeutic approach. There is a wide diversity of endoscopic options, from close-cover-divert approaches to active or passive internal drainage approaches. Theoretically, all these options can be used alone or with a multimodality approach, as each of them has different mechanisms of action. The approach to postsurgical leaks should always be tailored to each patient, taking into account the several variables that may influence the final outcome. In this review, we discuss the important developments in endoscopic devices for the treatment of postsurgical leaks. Our discussion specifically focuses on principles and mechanism of action, advantages and disadvantages of each technique, indications, clinical success, and adverse events. An algorithm for endoscopic approach is proposed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Image-guided insertion of stents in the upper gastrointestinal trunk is an effective, minimally invasive treatment option to provide immediate relief of symptoms caused by upper gastrointestinal tract obstruction related to advanced-stage malignant causes or benign causes that lead to lumen narrowing. PURPOSE This document, as with all CIRSE Standards of Practice documents, is not intended to impose a standard of clinical patient care but will recommend a reasonable approach to best practices for performing stenting of the upper gastrointestinal tract, namely the oesophageal and gastroduodenal segments. Our purpose is to provide up-to-date recommendations for placement of upper gastrointestinal tract stents based on the previously published guidelines on this topic in 2005 and 2007. METHODS The writing group was established by the CIRSE Standards of Practice Committee and consisted of a group of internationally recognised experts in performing upper gastrointestinal stenting. The writing group reviewed the existing literature using PubMed to search for relevant publications in the English language up to September 2021. The final recommendations were formulated through consensus. CONCLUSION Insertion of stents in the oesophageal and gastroduodenal tracts has an established role in the successful management of malignant or benign obstructions. This Standards of Practice document provides up-to-date recommendations for the safe performance of upper gastrointestinal stent placement.

Abstract
The breakthrough of 3D printing in biomedical research has paved the way for the next evolutionary step referred to as four dimensional (4D) printing. This new concept utilizes the time as the fourth dimension in addition to the x, y, and z axes with the idea to change the configuration of a printed construct with time usually in response to an external stimulus. This can be attained through the incorporation of smart materials or through a preset smart design. The 4D printed constructs may be designed to exhibit expandability, flexibility, self-folding, self-repair or deformability. This review focuses on 4D printed devices for gastroretentive, esophageal, and intravesical delivery. The currently unmet needs and challenges for these application sites are tried to be defined and reported on published solution concepts involving 4D printing. In addition, other promising application sites that may similarly benefit from 4D printing approaches such as tracheal and intrauterine drug delivery are proposed.

Abstract
Recent advancement in endoscopic closure techniques have revolutionized the treatment of gastrointestinal perforations, leaks and fistulas. Traditionally, these have been managed surgically. The treatment strategy depends on the size and location of the defect, degree of contamination, presence of healthy surrounding tissues, patients' condition and the availability of expertise. One of the basic principles of management includes providing a barricade to the flow of luminal contents across the defect. This can be achieved with a wide range of endoscopic techniques. These include endoclips, stenting, suturing, tissue adhesives and glue, and endoscopic vacuum therapy. Each method has their distinct indications and shortcomings. Often, a combination of these techniques is required. Apart from endoscopic closure, drainage procedures by the interventional radiologist and surgical management also play an important role. In this review article, the outcomes of each of these endoscopic closure techniques in the literature is provided in tables, and practical management algorithms are being proposed.

Abstract
Tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) is a pathological connection between the trachea and the oesophagus that is associated with various underlying conditions including malignancies, infections, inhalation injuries and traumatic damage. As the condition spans multiple organ systems with varying aetiologies and acuities, TOF poses unique diagnostic and management challenges to pulmonologists, gastroenterologists and thoracic surgeons alike. Although stents have been a cornerstone in the management of TOF, there exists a large gap in our understanding of their efficacy and precise methodology, making stenting procedure both art and science. TOFs relating to underlying oesophageal or tracheal malignancies require advanced understanding of the airway and digestive tract anatomy, dimensions of the fistula, stent characteristics and types, and the interplay between the oesophageal stent and the airway stent if dual stenting procedure is elected. In this review article, we review the most up-to-date data on risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, management methods and prognosis. Consequently, this article serves to evaluate current therapeutic strategies and the future directions in the areas of 3D-printed stents, over-the-scope clipping systems, tissue matrices and atrial septal closure devices.

Abstract
With the improvement in flexible endoscopic technology and the availability of new endoscopic devices, current endoscopic therapies spare many patients who would otherwise undergo surgical repair of gastrointestinal fistulas. These endoscopic techniques include gastrointestinal stents, endoscopic suturing, cardiac septal occluders, endo-sponge, vacuum therapy and others. This review elaborates on the indications, evidence, procedural details, efficacy, and complications of various endoscopic techniques for the management of gastrointestinal fistulas.

Lumen-apposing Metal Stents, Fully Covered Self-expanding Metal Stents, and Biodegradable Stents in the Management of Benign of GI Strictures: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Abstract
BACKGROUND Refractory benign gastrointestinal (GI) strictures are difficult to treat and placement of a stent is a commonly sought resort. Stents used for this purpose are fully covered self-expanding metal stent (FCSEMS), a biodegradable stent (BDS) and recently, a lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS). There is no data comparing these stents to this end. METHODS We conducted a comprehensive search of multiple electronic databases and conference proceedings (from inception through October 2018) to identify studies that reported on the performance of FCSEMS, BDS, and LAMS in the treatment of refractory benign GI strictures. Our goals were to evaluate the pooled rate of technical success, clinical success, and adverse events with these stents and compare the outcomes between them. RESULTS A total of 31 studies were analyzed. In total, 14 (342 patients), 11 (226 patients), and 8 studies (192 patients) reported the use of FCSEMS, BDS, and LAMS, respectively. The pooled rate of technical success was 96.5% [95% confidence interval (CI): 93.5-98.1], 91.9% (95% CI: 85.6-95.6), and 97.6% (95% CI: 94.0-99.0) with FCSEMS, BDS, and LAMS respectively. No statistical significance to the difference was noted. The pooled rate of clinical success was 48.4% (95% CI: 37.1-59.8), 34.9% (95% CI: 23.6-48.1), and 78.8% (95% CI: 65.8-87.8) with FCSEMS, BDS, and LAMS, respectively. Statistical significance was noted in LAMS versus FCSEMS (P=0.001) and LAMS versus BDS (P=0.001). LAMS demonstrated statistically better outcomes in regards to stent migration and postprocedure pain when compared with FCSEMS and BDS. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that LAMS gives better clinical outcomes in the treatment of refractory benign GI strictures when compared with FCSEMS and BDS. Variability in the site, as well as the length of stricture, indirect comparison, and heterogeneity, were the limitations of our study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Historically, the gold standard management of esophageal perforations, leaks, and fistulae has been traditional open surgery, but it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Minimally invasive approaches offer alternatives to surgery in treating hemodynamically stable patients with such defects. In this review article, we will discuss the recent advancements in the minimally invasive management of esophageal perforations, leaks, and fistulas. AREAS COVERED This review includes information from case reports, case series, and clinical trials on minimally invasive management of esophageal perforations, leaks, and fistulas. The focus is on the devices, outcomes, and application of the technology. EXPERT COMMENTARY Minimally invasive treatment represents significant progress in the management of esophageal perforations, leaks, and fistulas. Based on current evidence, it seems safe and effective but it is evolving and more studies are needed to help draw definitive conclusions.

Abstract
Palliation therapy for dysphagia using esophageal stents is the current treatment of choice for those patients with inoperable esophageal malignancies. However, the metallic and plastic stents currently used in the clinical setting may cause complications, such as tumor ingrowth and stent migration into the stomach. To effectively reduce/overcome these complications, we designed a tubular, flexible polymer stent with spirals. The parameters of the spirals were computationally optimized by using a finite element analysis. The designed polymer stents with optimized spirals were then printed by a 3D printing technique. 3D-printed tubular polymer stents without spirals served as controls. The self-expansion and anti-migration properties of the printed stent were characterized in an ex vivo normal porcine esophagus. The biodegradability test of the stent was performed in a neutral buffer and acidic gastric buffer. The cytotoxicity of the new stent was examined through the viability test of human esophagus epithelial cells. Results showed the self-expansion force of the 3D-printed polymer stent with spirals was higher than the stent without spirals. The anti-migration force of the 3D-printed stent with spirals was significantly higher than that of the stent without spirals. Furthermore, the stent with spirals significantly decreased the migration distance compared to the non-spiral 3D-printed polymer stent. Degradation study showed that the polymer materials started to degrade after six weeks and the compressive strength of the stent was not significantly decreased with time. In vitro cell viability results further indicated that the polymer stent does not have any cytotoxicity. Together, these results showed that the 3D-printed stent with spirals has potential applications in the treatment of inoperable esophageal malignancies. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In this study, we developed a new 3D-printed flexible tubular polymeric stent with spirals. The mechanical properties of the 3D-printed polymer stent are modulated by changing the ratios of PLA to TPU. The stent is flexible enough to be compressed in a clinically available stent delivery system, and can self-expand after it is released. The self-expansion force of the stent with spirals is higher than that of non-spiral stents. The spirals on the outside of the stent significantly increased the anti-migration force compared to non-spiral stents in an ex vivo normal pig esophagus. Together, the 3D-printed stent with spirals will bring promising potential in the treatment of inoperable esophagus malignancies or benign strictures.

Abstract
The development of new endoscopic techniques, such as gastrointestinal (GI) stenting, full-thickness suturing, clip application, and use of tissue adhesives, has had a significant impact on management of GI fistulae. These techniques have shown promising results, but further study is needed to optimize the efficacy of long-term closure. The advancement of endoscopic techniques, including the use of the lumen apposing metal stent (LAMS), has allowed for the deliberate creation of fistula tracts to apply endoscopic therapy that previously could not be achieved. This article examines the rapidly evolving area of endoscopic fistula closure and its relationship to LAMS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Self-expandable metallic stents (SEMS) have been increasingly used in benign conditions (e. g. strictures, fistulas, leaks, and perforations). Fully covered SEMS (FSEMS) were introduced to avoid undesirable consequences of partially covered SEMS (PSEMS), but come with higher risk of stent migration. Endoscopic suturing (ES) for stent fixation has been shown to reduce migration of FSEMS. Our aim was to compare the outcomes of FSEMS with ES (FS/ES) versus PSEMS in patients with benign upper gastrointestinal conditions. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively identified all patients who underwent stent placement for benign gastrointestinal conditions at seven US tertiary-care centers. Patients were divided into two groups: FSEMS with ES (FS/ES group) and PSEMS (PSEMS group). Clinical outcomes between the two groups were compared. RESULTS A total of 74 (FS/ES 46, PSEMS 28) patients were included. On multivariable analysis, there was no significant difference in rate of stent migration between FS/ES (43 %) and PSEMS (15 %) (adjusted odds ratio 0.56; 95 % CI 0.15 - 2.00). Clinical success was similar [68 % vs. 64 %; P = 0.81]. Rate of adverse events (AEs) was higher in PSEMS group [13 (46 %) vs. 10 (21 %); P = 0.03). Difficult stent removal was higher in the PSEMS group (n = 5;17 %) vs. 0 % in the FS/ES group; P = 0.005. CONCLUSIONS The proportion of stent migration of FS/ES and PSEMS are similar. Rates of other stent-related AEs were higher in the PSEMS group. PSEMS was associated with tissue ingrowth or overgrowth leading to difficult stent removal, and secondary stricture formation. Thus, FSEMS with ES for stent fixation may be the preferred modality over PSEMS for the treatment of benign upper gastrointestinal conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The use of fully covered metal stents (FCMS) for the treatment of benign conditions is increasing. The aim of our study was to assess the efficacy of FCMS in the management of post-operative leaks after gastric or esophageal surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS During a three year period (2011-2013), patients who underwent a surgery related with esophageal or gastric cancer and developed a postoperative anastomotic leak treated with FCMS were prospectively included. RESULTS Fourteen patients were included (11 men, 3 women), with median age of 65 years. Placement of at least one stent was achieved in 13 patients (93% of cases), with initial closure of the leak in 12 of these 13 cases (92.3%). A final success (after removal of the stent) could be demonstrated in 9 cases (69.2%, intention to treat analysis); stent failed only in one case (7.7%) and there were 3 patients (23.1%) not evaluated because death before stent retrieval (not related with the endoscopic procedure). One stent were used in 9 cases (69.2%), and two in 4 (30.8%). Migration was observed in two cases (15.3%). There were no major complications related with the use of stents. There were no complications related with retrieval. CONCLUSIONS The placement of FCMS to achieve the leak closure after esophageal or gastric surgery is an effective and probably safe alternative feasible with minor risks.

Abstract
Benign esophageal strictures arise from various etiologies and are frequently encountered. Although endoscopic dilation is still the first-line therapy, recurrent strictures do occur in approximately 10% of the cases and remains a challenge to gastroenterologists. Areas covered: A literature search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar databases for original and review articles on endoscopic treatment of benign esophageal strictures. This review outlines the main available treatment options and its controversies in the management of refractory benign esophageal strictures. Expert commentary: Adding local steroid injections to dilation can be effective for peptic stenosis and strictures after endoscopic submucosal dissection, but remains uncertain for anastomotic strictures. Intralesional injections of mitomycin-C could be useful in corrosive strictures. Incisional therapy can be a reliable alternative in Schatzki rings and in anastomotic strictures, in experienced hands. By contrast, long-term outcome with endoprosthetic treatment is disappointing, and stent placement should be carefully considered and individualized.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Migration of stents is one of the most common adverse events in covered stent placement in GI tract obstruction. OBJECTIVE To compare physical property and migration rates in a canine colon obstruction model among a novel stent and conventional stents. DESIGN Comparative physical test and animal study. SETTING Medical device testing laboratory and animal laboratory. SUBJECTS Mongrel dogs (N=26). INTERVENTIONS Surgical colon obstruction followed by placement of a novel (n=13) or conventional (n=13) stent. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS Physical properties, migration, and adverse events. RESULTS The novel stent showed better flexibility, as in a physical test of longitudinal compressibility and axial force, than did conventional stents, and it withstood the fatigue test for 10 days. In terms of radial force and tensile strength, the novel stent showed the same or better results than conventional stents. In a canine colon obstruction model, the migration rate of a novel stent was significantly lower than that of a conventional stent (2/13, 15.4% vs 8/13, 61.5%; P=.008). LIMITATIONS Animal study of limited size. CONCLUSION The novel, ring-connected stent is more flexible and more resistant to migration than the conventional stents.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal leaks and fistulae can be serious acute complications or chronic morbid conditions resulting from inflammatory, malignant, or postsurgical states. Endoscopic closure of gastrointestinal leaks and fistulae represents major progress in the treatment of patients with these complex presentations. The main goal of endoscopic therapy is the interruption of the flow of luminal contents across a gastrointestinal defect. In consideration of the proper endoscopic approach to luminal closure, several basic principles must be considered. Undrained cavities and fluid collections must often first be drained percutaneously, and the percutaneous drain provides an important measure of safety for subsequent endoscopic luminal manipulations. The size and exact location of the leak/fistula, as well as the viability of the surrounding tissue, must be defined. Almost all complex leaks and fistulae must be approached in a multidisciplinary manner, collaborating with colleagues in nutrition, radiology, and surgery. Currently, gastrointestinal leaks and fistulae may be managed endoscopically by using 1 or more of the following modalities: stent placement, clip closure (including through-the-scope clips and over-the-scope devices), endoscopic suturing, and the injection of tissue sealants. In this article, we discuss these modalities and review the published outcomes data regarding each approach as well as practical considerations for successful closure of luminal defects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Migration is the most common complication of the fully covered metallic self-expanding esophageal stent (FCSEMS). Recent studies have demonstrated migration rates between 30% and 60%. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fixation of the FCSEMS by endoscopic suturing on migration rate. PATIENT AND METHODS Patients who underwent stent placement for esophageal strictures and leaks over the last year were captured and reviewed retrospectively. Group A, cases, were patients who underwent suture placement and group B, controls, were patients who had stents without sutures. Basic demographics, indications, and adverse events (AEs) were collected. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression modeling were conducted to determine estimates and predictors of stent migration in patients with and without suture placement. RESULTS Thirty-seven patients (18 males, 48.65%), mean age 57.2 years (±16.3 y), were treated with esophageal FCSEMS. A total of 17 patients received sutures (group A) and 20 patients received stents without sutures (group B). Stent migration was noted in a total of 13 of the 37 patients (35%) [2 (11%) in group A and 11 (55%) in group B]. Using Kaplan-Meier analysis and log-rank analysis, fixation of the stent with suturing reduced the risk of migration (P=0.04). There were no AEs directly related to suture placement. CONCLUSIONS Anchoring of the upper flare of the FCSEMS with endoscopic sutures is technically feasible and significantly reduces stent migration rate when compared with no suturing, and is a safe procedure with very low AEs rates.

Abstract
AIM To analyze the outcomes of self-expandable stent placement for benign esophageal strictures and benign esophageal leaks in the literature. METHODS The PubMed, Embase and Cochrane databases were searched for relevant articles published between January 2000 and July 2014. Eight prospective studies were identified that analyzed the outcomes of stent placement for refractory benign esophageal strictures. The outcomes of stent placement for benign esophageal leaks, perforations and fistulae were extracted from 20 retrospective studies that were published after the inclusion period of a recent systematic review. Data were pooled and analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS Fully covered self-expandable metal stents (FC SEMS) (n = 85), biodegradable (BD) stents (n = 77) and self-expandable plastic stents (SEPS) (n = 70) were inserted in 232 patients with refractory benign esophageal strictures. The overall clinical success rate was 24.2% and according to stent type 14.1% for FC SEMS, 32.9% for BD stents and 27.1% for SEPS. Stent migration occurred in 24.6% of cases. The overall complication rate was 31.0%, including major (17.7%) and minor (13.4%) complications. A total of 643 patients were treated with self-expandable stents mainly for postsurgical leaks (64.5%), iatrogenic perforations (19.6%), Boerhaave's syndrome (7.8%) and fistulae (3.7%). FC SEMS and partially covered SEMS were used in the majority of patients. Successful closure of the defect was achieved in 76.8% of patients and according to etiology in 81.4% for postsurgical leaks, 86.0% for perforations and 64.7% for fistulae. The pooled stent migration rate was 16.5%. Stent-related complications occurred in 13.4% of patients, including major (7.8%) and minor (5.5%) complications. CONCLUSION The outcomes of stent placement for refractory benign esophageal strictures were poor. However, randomized trials are needed to put this into perspective. The evidence on successful stent placement for benign esophageal leaks, perforations and fistulae is promising.

Abstract
Globus is a topic of interest for many specialties including otorhinolaryngology, gastroenterology and psychiatry/psychosomatic medicine, but, although many hypotheses have been suggested, key questions about its aetiology remain. This Review provides an overview of the extensive literature concerning this topic and discusses the quality of the evidence to date. Globus has been associated with oropharyngeal structural lesions, upper oesophageal sphincter disorders, oesophageal disorders, GERD, psychosocial factors and psychiatric comorbidity. However, findings are often contradictory and the literature remains highly inconclusive. Indeed, with the exception of patients with structural-based globus, the Rome III criteria for functional globus only apply to a subgroup of patients with idiopathic globus. In clinical reality, there exists a group of patients who present with idiopathic (nonstructural) globus, but nevertheless have dysphagia, odynophagia or GERD-exclusion criteria for globus diagnosis according to Rome III. The symptomatology of patients with globus might be broader than previously thought. It is therefore crucial to approach globus not from one single perspective, but from a multifactorial point of view, with focus on the coexistence and/or interactions of different mechanisms in globus pathogenesis. This approach could be translated to clinical practice by adopting a multidisciplinary method to patients presenting with globus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporary placement of self-expandable stents has been increasingly used for the management of benign esophageal diseases. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the safety of endoscopic removal of esophageal self-expandable stents placed for the treatment of benign esophageal diseases. DESIGN Multicenter retrospective study. SETTING Six tertiary care centers in the United States and Europe. PATIENTS A total of 214 patients with benign esophageal diseases undergoing endoscopic stent removal. INTERVENTION Endoscopic stent removal. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS Endoscopic techniques for stent removal, time to stent removal, and adverse events related to stent removal. RESULTS A total of 214 patients underwent a total of 329 stent extractions. Stents were mainly placed for refractory strictures (49.2%) and fistulae (49.8%). Of the removed stents, 52% were fully covered self-expandable metal stents (FCSEMSs), 28.6% were partially covered self-expandable metal stents (PCSEMSs), and 19.5% were self-expandable plastic stents. A total of 35 (10.6%) procedure-related adverse events were reported, including 7 (2.1%) major adverse events. Multivariate analysis revealed that use of PCSEMSs (P < .001) was a risk factor for adverse events during stent removal. Favorable factors for successful stent removal were FCSEMSs (P ≤ .012) and stent migration (P = .010). No significant associations were found for stent indwelling time (P = .145) and stent embedding (P = .194). LIMITATIONS Retrospective analysis, only tertiary care centers. CONCLUSIONS With an acceptable major adverse event rate of 2.1%, esophageal stent removal in the setting of benign disease was found to be a safe and feasible procedure. FCSEMSs were more successfully removed than self-expandable plastic stents and PCSEMSs. Adverse events caused by stent removal were not time dependent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer requiring neoadjuvant therapy have significant dysphagia. OBJECTIVE To report our experience in using a fully covered self-expandable metal stent (FCSEMS) to treat malignant dysphagia and for maintenance of nutritional support during neoadjuvant therapy. DESIGN Retrospective study. SETTING Two tertiary-care referral centers. PATIENTS This study involved 55 patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer (50 adenocarcinoma, 5 squamous cell carcinoma). Forty-three patients were men, and the mean age was 65.8 years. INTERVENTION EUS followed by FCSEMS placement. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS Procedural success, dysphagia scores, patient weights, stent migration, and stent-related complications. RESULTS All stents were successfully placed. Tumors were located in the middle esophagus (n = 10) and distal esophagus (n = 45). The mean dysphagia score obtained at 1 week after stent placement had improved significantly from baseline (2.4 and 1, respectively; P < .001). Patients maintained their weights at 1 month follow-up when compared with baseline (153 and 149 pounds, respectively; P = .58). Immediate complications included chest discomfort in 13 patients; 2 patients required stent removal because of intractable pain. One patient had stent removal because of significant acid reflux. Stent migration occurred at some point in 17 of 55 patients (31%). There was a delayed perforation in 1 patient. Because of disease progression or the discovery of metastasis after neoadjuvant therapy, only 8 of 55 patients underwent curative surgery. LIMITATIONS Retrospective study. CONCLUSION Placement of FCSEMSs in patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer significantly improves dysphagia and allows for oral nutrition during neoadjuvant therapy. FCSEMSs appear to be effective for palliating dysphagia. Migration was not associated with injury or harm to the patient and usually represented a positive response to neoadjuvant therapy. Few patients undergoing stenting in this situation ultimately undergo surgery because of disease progression or poor operative candidacy.
