Abstract
Chiral phosphorus ligands play a crucial role in asymmetric catalysis for the efficient synthesis of useful optically active compounds. They are largely categorized into two classes: backbone chirality ligands and P-stereogenic phosphorus ligands. Most of the reported ligands belong to the former class. Privileged ones such as BINAP and DuPhos are frequently employed in a wide range of catalytic asymmetric transformations. In contrast, the latter class of P-stereogenic phosphorus ligands has remained a small family for many years mainly because of their synthetic difficulty. The late 1990s saw the emergence of novel P-stereogenic phosphorus ligands with their superior enantioinduction ability in Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation reactions. Since then, numerous P-stereogenic phosphorus ligands have been synthesized and used in catalytic asymmetric reactions. This Review summarizes P-stereogenic phosphorus ligands reported thus far, including their stereochemical and electronic properties that afford high to excellent enantioselectivities. Examples of reactions that use this class of ligands are described together with their applications in the construction of key intermediates for the synthesis of optically active natural products and therapeutic agents. The literature covered dates back to 1968 up until December 2023, centering on studies published in the late 1990s and later years.

Abstract
P-chiral supramolecular phosphine ligands are crucial for asymmetric transformations, but their synthesis is tedious. We report a one-step synthesis of thermally stable P-chiral supramolecular phosphines and their performance in the asymmetric hydrogenation of functionalized alkenes. A rational designing and synthesis of (R, R)-QuinoxP* ligated palladium complex (Pd-2) in excellent yield is reported. This Pd-2 catalyzed a direct P-C coupling of 2,3-dihydro-1-H-phosphindole (A1)/1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophosphindoline (A2) with 1-(3-iodophenyl)urea (B1)/2-iodo /6-hydroxy pyridine (B2) and, produced corresponding ligands L1-L3. The P-C coupling between A1 and B2 produced 6-(2,3-dihydro-1H-phosphindol-1-yl)pyridine-2(1H)-one (L2) with an excellent enantiomeric excess of up to 99 %. L2 was found to be remarkably stable even at 150 °C and did not oxidize/hydrolyze for at least 24 hours in open air. Such thermal stability and an impediment to oxidation are unprecedented. L2 self-assembled and produced L2-C1 (Pt), L2-C2(Pd), and L2-C3(Rh) assemblies. The utility of the self-assembled P-chiral ligand was demonstrated in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation (AH) of functionalized olefins. The L2-C3 catalyzed AH of functionalized alkenes and delivered chiral products with excellent enantioselectivity of >99 %. A small library of 16 substrates was subjected to AH using L2-C3 to produce chiral compounds with excellent conversion and ee.

Abstract
Highly efficient kinetic resolution of P-chiral phosphindole oxides via rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric arylation under mild conditions is described. Selectivity factors of up to 569 were achieved by employing chiral diene* as a ligand. The transformation of the enantiopure benzophosphole derivative into a useful P-chiral bisphosphine ligand is also demonstrated.

Abstract
Described herein is the successful crystallization-induced dynamic resolution (CIDR) of an α-lithiated phosphine borane utilizing the easily accessible and inexpensive ligand (R,R)-TMCDA. Starting from the essential P-prochiral building block dimethyl phenyl phosphine borane we were able to obtain phosphine boranes in yields up to 80 % and e.r. up to 98 : 2 by crystallization of the lithiated intermediate prior to the trapping reaction. NMR-based deuterium labeling experiments indicate that the epimerization in solution is based on the intermolecular proton transfer between nonlithiated phosphine borane and the corresponding lithiated intermediate, rendering the presence of the remaining starting compound in an optimized solvent mixture the main factor for successful enantioselective synthesis. Quantum chemical calculations using different model systems based on solid state structures confirm these experimental results. By gaining insights into the epimerization mechanism, essential principles for CIDR of lithiated phosphine boranes are elucidated that may be expanded to other important P-stereogenic compounds and simple chiral amines.

Abstract
The importance of P-stereogenic heterocycles has been widely recognized with their extensive use as privileged chiral ligands and bioactive compounds. The catalytic asymmetric synthesis of P-stereogenic phosphindane derivatives, however, remains a challenging task. Herein, we report a catalytic kinetic resolution of phosphindole oxides via rhodium-catalyzed diastereo- and enantioselective conjugate addition to access enantiopure P-stereogenic phosphindane and phosphindole derivatives. This kinetic resolution method features high efficiency (s factor up to >1057), excellent stereoselectivities (all >20:1 dr, up to >99% ee), and a broad substrate scope. The obtained chiral phosphindane oxides exhibit promising therapeutic efficacy in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), and compound 3az is found to significantly inhibit renal cyst growth both in vitro and in vivo, thus ushering in a promising scaffold for ADPKD drug discovery. This study will not only advance efforts towards the asymmetric synthesis of challenging P-stereogenic heterocycles, but also surely inspire further development of P-stereogenic entities for bioactive small-molecule discovery.

Abstract
Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) are widely used in many fields. However, traditional synthetic routes in the industry usually involve multistep and hazardous procedures. Therefore, it's of great significance to construct such compounds in an environmentally-friendly and facile way. Herein, a photoredox catalytic method has been developed to construct novel phosphoryltriacetates. Using fac-Ir(ppy)3 (ppy=2-phenylpyridine) as the photocatalyst and blue LEDs (456 nm) as the light source, white phosphorus can react with α-bromo esters smoothly to generate phosphoryltriacetates in moderate to good yields. This one-step approach features mild reaction conditions and simple operational process without chlorination.

Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric methods for the synthesis of synthetically versatile P-stereogenic building blocks offer an efficient and practical approach for the diversity-oriented preparation of P-chiral phosphorus compounds. Herein, we report the first nickel-catalyzed synthesis of P-stereogenic secondary aminophosphine-boranes by the asymmetric addition of primary phosphines to azo compounds. We further demonstrate that the P-H and P-N bonds on these phosphanyl hydrazine building blocks can be reacted sequentially and stereospecifically to access various P-stereogenic compounds with structural diversity.

Abstract
Chiral P,N-ligands are of great interest and importance in the fields of metal-catalyzed enantioselective transformations and have found numerous applications spanning drug and polymer synthesis. Here, modular assembly of diverse P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands is achieved through palladium-catalyzed asymmetric cleavage of C-P bond/intermolecular C-H bond functionalization in high atroposelectivities and diastereoselectivities of up to >99% ee and >25:1 dr. This protocol features broad substrate scope and provides an avenue for facile construction of new P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands directly from the phosphonium salts and benzoxazoles/benzothiazoles. Evaluation of the synthesized P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands in two model catalytic asymmetric reactions illustrates the potential of our strategy to access valuable chiral molecules.

Abstract
CONTEXT This research focused on the theoretical investigation of transition metal carbonyls [M(CO)4] coordinated with terminal germanium chalcogenides complexes [M(CO)3GeX], where M represents Ni, Pd, and Pt and X represents O, S, Se, and Te labeled 1-15. While the notable complexes M(CO)4 (where M = Ni, Pd, Pt) numbered 1, 6, and 11 are of significance, substituting one of the CO ligands in 1, 6, and 11 with a GeX ligand (where X = O, S, Se, or Te) result in substituted complexes (2-5, 7-10, and 11-15). Substituting of the CO ligand slightly alters these bond angles. Specifically, the ∠CMC bond angles for [Ni] complexes range from 111.9° to 112.2°, for [Pd] complexes from 111.4° to 111.7°, and for [Pt] complexes from 112.4° to 112.8°. These findings indicate a minor deviation from the tetrahedral geometry due to the influence of the new GeX ligand. Similarly, there is a slight change in the geometry of the metal complexes, where the ∠GeMC angles for [Ni] complexes are between 106.7° and 106.9°, for [Pd] complexes between 107.2° and 107.5°, and for [Pt] complexes between 105.9° and 106.4°. Comparing among the substituted GeX complexes, those containing GeTe exhibit a higher natural bond orbital (NBO) contribution from the Ge atom compared to the M atom. Consequently, based on the above observations, it can be inferred that GeX acts as an effective sigma donor in contrast to carbonyl compounds. Results of energy decomposition analysis (EDA) for the M-CO bond in 1, 6, and 11 and for the M-GeX bond in the other [M(CO)3(GeX)] complexes where M = Ni, Pd and Pt. The percentage contribution of ΔEelstat and ΔEorb shows a relatively identical behavior for all ligands in case of each metal complexes. METHODS Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted using the B3LYP/gen/6-31G*/LanL2DZ level of theory to examine transition metal carbonyls [M(CO)4] coordinated with terminal germanium chalcogenides complexes [M(CO)3GeX], where M represents Ni, Pd, and Pt, and X represents O, S, Se, and Te labeled 1-15 utilized through the use of Gaussian 09W and GaussView 6.0.16 software packages. Post-processing computational code such as multi-wave function was employed for results analysis and visualization.

Abstract
P-Stereogenic phosphinamides represent important structural elements in chiral organocatalysts and bioactive compounds. Herein, we report Pd(II)-catalyzed enantioselective C-H alkynylation using cheap commercially available l-pyroglutamic acid as a chiral ligand. A range of structurally diverse P-stereogenic phosphinamides was prepared in good yields with high enantioselectivities via desymmetrization and kinetic resolution. A tailor-made congested directing group, N-ethyl-N-(3-methylpyridin-2-yl)amino, was crucial for the reactivity.

Abstract
Enantiopure P-stereogenic methylphosphane-boranes (SP)-P(BH3)PhArMe (ArMe; Ar = 1-naphthyl (NpMe), and 2-biphenylyl (BiphMe)) have been used to prepare diphosphanes of the type ArPhPCH2PR2 (R = Ph, iPr or tBu; ArR). The ligands have been reacted with [Rh(COD)2]BF4 to furnish the corresponding six monochelated [Rh(COD)(ArR)]BF4 organometallic compounds (RhArR) or, depending on the reaction conditions, the bis(chelated) coordination compound [Rh(BiphiPr)2]BF4 as a mixture of cis and trans isomers. The crystal structure of cis-[Rh(BiphiPr)2]BF4 was obtained. The coordination of the BiphR with [RuCl(μ-Cl)(η6-p-cymene)2]2 under different conditions produced cationic chelated complexes of the type [RuCl(η6-p-cymene)(κ2-BiphR)]PF6 (RuBiphR) and the neutral monocoordinated complex [RuCl2(η6-p-cymene)(κ1-BiphPh)] (RuBiphPh') with the uncoordinated P-stereogenic moiety. The Rh(I) complexes were used in the catalytic hydrogenation of functionalized olefins and the Ru(II) complexes were tested in the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone. Both precursors displayed good activities with moderate enantioselectivities.

Abstract
Copper-catalyzed dynamic kinetic resolution of secondary phosphine oxides has been successfully developed, providing a general method for the gram-scale enantioselective synthesis of P-stereogenic cyclic phosphine oxides with high yields and high enantioselectivities. The products could be easily reduced to the corresponding useful P(III)-stereogenic cyclic phosphines. A mechanism of the dynamic kinetic resolution involving the unusual rapid racemization of SPOs has been proposed.

Abstract
A focused library of 1-adamantyl arylthiophosphonates was prepared in racemic form. An enantioseparation method was developed for P-stereogenic thiophosphonates using (S)-1-phenylethylamine as the resolving agent. Under optimized conditions, three out of the five arylthiophosphonates were prepared in enantiopure form (ee > 99%). The subsequent desulfurization of optically active arylthiophosphonates gave the corresponding H-phosphinates without significant erosion of enantiomeric purity (ee = 95-98%). Hence, this reaction sequence can be considered an alternative method for the preparation of 1-adamantyl aryl-H-phopshinates. The absolute configuration of the (S)-1-adamantyl phenylphosphonothioic acid was assigned using single-crystal XRD and it allowed the confirmation that the removal of the P = S group proceeds with retention of configuration. The organocatalytic applicability of (S)-1-adamantyl phenylphosphonothioic acid was also evaluated as a P-stereogenic Brønsted acid.

Abstract
Synthesis of chiral phosphorus compounds from readily available substrates by a facile method is an attractive strategy. In this study, an efficient route for copper-catalyzed asymmetric boroprotonation of phosphinylallenes with bis(pinacolato)diboron with high regioselectivity was developed, affording chiral allylphosphine oxides in high yields with high enantioselectivities of up to 98% ee. The synthetic utility was further demonstrated by the facile transformation of the chiral allylphosphine oxides to several stereospecific products.

Abstract
Enantioenriched phosphorus compounds play crucial roles in many fields ranging from catalyst to materials science to drug development. Despite advances in the construction of phosphacycles, incorporation of a P-chirogenic center into heterocycles remains challenging. Here, we report an effective method for the preparation of phosphacycles through nickel-catalyzed [4+2] heteroannulation of internal alkynes with aminophosphanes derived from o-haloanilines. Notably, chiral 2-λ5-phosphaquinolines can be prepared from P-stereogenic substrates via NH/PH tautomeric equilibrium without loss of stereochemical integrity. The strategy is found to exhibit a broad scope in terms of both reaction components, enabling modular construction of libraries of 2-λ5-phosphaquinolines with different steric and electronic properties for fine-tuning photophysical properties, where some of these compounds showed distinct fluorescence with high quantum yields. A series of mechanistic studies further shed light on the pathway of the heteroannulation and reasons for stereospecificity.

Abstract
Alkenes and their derivatives are featured widely in a variety of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials. Significant efforts have been made toward the development of new and practical methods to access this important class of compounds by selectively activating the alkenyl C(sp2)-H bonds in recent years. In this comprehensive review, we describe the state-of-the-art strategies for the direct functionalization of alkenyl sp2 C-H and C-F bonds until June 2022. Moreover, metal-free, photoredox, and electrochemical strategies are also covered. For clarity, this review has been divided into two parts; the first part focuses on currently available alkenyl sp2 C-H functionalization methods using different alkene derivatives as the starting materials, and the second part describes the alkenyl sp2 C-F bond functionalization using easily accessible gem-difluoroalkenes as the starting material. This review includes the scope, limitations, mechanistic studies, stereoselective control (using directing groups as well as metal-migration strategies), and their applications to complex molecule synthesis where appropriate. Overall, this comprehensive review aims to document the considerable advancements, current status, and emerging work by critically summarizing the contributions of researchers working in this fascinating area and is expected to stimulate novel, innovative, and broadly applicable strategies for alkenyl sp2 C-H and C-F bond functionalizations in the coming years.

Abstract
pivZPhos, as an effective ligand in the Cu-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of ketones and aminoboration of alkenes, is prepared efficiently from the corresponding triflate of P-chiral dihydrobenzoazaphosphole 1. However, the previous approach to 1 by chiral separation is time-consuming and costly, preventing its production and further application on a large scale. In this report, a practical method for the large-scale preparation of 1 was developed via chiral chemical resolution with (1S,2S)-diaminocyclohexane as an effective resolution reagent.

Abstract
Previous methods on CoIII -catalyzed asymmetric C-H activation rely on the use of tailor-made cyclopentadienyl-ligated CoIII complexes, which require lengthy steps for the preparation. Herein, we report an unprecedented enantioselective C-H functionalization enabled by a simple cobalt/salicyloxazoline (Salox) catalysis. The chiral Salox ligands can be easily prepared in one step from salicylonitrile and chiral amino alcohols. A broad range of P-stereogenic compounds were synthesized in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities (45 examples, up to 99 % yield and >99 % ee). The isolation and characterization of several intermediates provided insights into the generation of active catalytic cobalt species, the action of Salox, and the mode of stereocontrol.

Abstract
The stereoselective synthesis of molecules bearing stereogenic phosphorus(V) centers represents an enduring challenge in organic chemistry. Although stereospecific nucleophilic substitution at P(V) provides a general strategy for elaborating optically active P(V) compounds, existing methods for accessing the requisite chiral building blocks rely almost entirely on diastereocontrol using chiral auxiliaries. Catalytic, enantioselective methods for the synthesis of synthetically versatile stereogenic P(V) building blocks offer an alternative approach to stereogenic-at-P(V) targets without requiring stoichiometric quantities of chiral control elements. Here, we report an enantioselective hydrogen-bond-donor-catalyzed synthesis of aryl chlorophosphonamidates and the development of these products as versatile chiral P(V) building blocks. We demonstrate that the two leaving groups on these chlorophosphonamidates can be displaced sequentially and stereospecifically to access a wide variety of stereogenic-at-P(V) compounds featuring diverse substitution patterns.

Abstract
Over the past two decades, visible-light-induced transformations have been regarded as being among the most environmentally benign and powerful strategies for constructing complex molecules and diverse synthetic building blocks in organic synthesis. However, the development of efficient photochemical processes for assembling enantiomerically pure molecules remains a significant challenge. Herein, we describe a simple and efficient visible-light-induced C–P bond forming reaction for the synthesis of P-chiral heteroaryl phosphine oxides in moderate to high yields with excellent ee values (97–99% ee). Even in the absence of transition metal or photoredox catalysts, a variety of P-chiral heteroaryl phosphine oxides, including chiral diphosphine oxide 41, have been directly obtained under air conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have shown that the reaction involves intersystem crossing and single electron transfer to give a diradical intermediate under visible light irradiation. We describe a simple and efficient visible-light-induced C–P bond forming reaction for the synthesis of P-chiral heteroaryl phosphine oxides in moderate to high yields with excellent ee values (97–99% ee).![]()

Abstract
The substitution reaction of phosphinates with a binaphthyloxy group at the phosphorus atom with lithium alkoxides proceeded with good to high efficiencies to give P-chirogenic phosphinates with a high enantiomeric ratio. As alcohols, primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols could be used, and the use of tert-butyl alcohol yielded the products with a higher enantiomeric ratio. A substrate with two different alkyl groups on the phosphorus atom could also participate in the substitution reaction to give the corresponding products in good yields with excellent selectivity. The molecular structures of one of the substrates and the corresponding products, determined by X-ray analyses, proved that the substitution reaction at the phosphorus atom proceeded with inversion of the absolute configuration. The usefulness of the reaction was demonstrated by using it to prepare a drug candidate for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Finally, thionation of the resulting phosphinates was carried out to form P-chirogenic phosphinothioates.

Abstract
A nickel-catalyzed benzylic substitution of secondary phosphine oxide was described, affording the dialkylated P-stereogenic tertiary phosphine oxides with high to excellent enantioselectivities. The reaction was performed under mild conditions with commercially available benzyl chlorides and bench stable secondary phosphine oxides, exhibiting broad functional group tolerance. It represented a practical example for the preparation of P-stereogenic phosphine compounds.

Abstract
A novel method for P-involved heterocycle ring-closing-ring-opening rearrangement (HRR) via the Heck reaction is disclosed. The approach enables direct installation of a phosphorus-containing aryl group onto the C2 position of indole. This new rearrangement directly transforms easily prepared indole derivatives into indolyl-derived phosphonates and phosphinic acids with high yields, and many of the products are difficult to obtain by using established methods. This new HRR reaction provides an extremely simple and step-economic method to induce C-C bond formation and P-N bond cleavage for the synthesis of a variety of indolyl-type ligands.

Abstract

Secondary phosphine
oxides incorporating various aryl and alkyl
groups were synthesized in racemic form, and these products formed
the library reported in this study. TADDOL derivatives were used to
obtain the optical resolution of these P-stereogenic
secondary phosphine oxides. The developed resolution method showed
a good scope under the optimized reaction conditions, as 9 out of
14 derivatives could be prepared with an enantiomeric excess (ee)
≥ 79% and 5 of these derivatives were practically enantiopure
>P(O)H compounds (ee ≥ 98%). The scalability of this resolution
method was also demonstrated. Noncovalent interactions responsible
for the formation of diasteromeric complexes were elucidated by single-crystal
XRD measurements. (S)-(2-Methylphenyl)phenylphosphine
oxide was transformed to a variety of P-stereogenic
tertiary phosphine oxides and a thiophosphinate in stereospecific
Michaelis–Becker, Hirao, or Pudovik reactions.

Abstract
P-stereogenic tert- and sec-phosphines have wide applications in asymmetric catalysis, materials, and pharmaceutical chemistry, however, their practical synthesis still constitutes a significant challenge. Herein, a successful kinetic resolution of rac-secondary phosphine oxides via the enantioselective P-benzylation process catalyzed by the palladium/Xiao-Phos was designed. Both tert- and sec-phosphine oxides were delivered in good yield and excellent enantiopurity (selectivity factor up to 226.1). The appealing synthetic utilities are further demonstrated by the facile preparation of several valuable P-chiral compounds, precursors of bidentate ligands, as well as transition metal complexes.

Abstract
A practical and cost-effective synthetic method of P-chiral diarylalkyl, aryldialkyl, and triaryl phosphine oxides by using readily available chiral diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinemethanol as the auxiliary is developed. The long-standing racemization issue during solvolysis has been addressed and well controlled by employing a suitable solvent, a low reaction temperature, and an appropriate reaction time.
