Severe cyanobacterial blooms in an Australian lake; causes and factors controlling succession patterns

Dynamics of the benthic and planktic microbiomes in a Planktothrix-dominated toxic cyanobacterial bloom in Australia

Cyanobacterial blooms are a concerning issue that threaten ecosystems, ecology and animal health. Bloom frequency has increased tremendously in recent times due to pollution, eutrophication of waterways, climate change, and changes in microbial community dynamics within the aquatic environment. Information about the spatiotemporal variation in microbial communities that drive a cyanobacterial bloom is very limited. Here, we analysed the spatiotemporal diversity and composition of bacterial communities, with a focus on cyanobacteria, during the bloom phase in a natural reservoir in Eastern Australia using high throughput amplicon sequencing. Sampling points and season had no influence on the richness and evenness of microbial communities during the bloom period, however some compositional differences were apparent across the seasons. Cyanobacteria were highly abundant during summer and autumn compared to winter and spring. The dominant cyanobacterial taxa were Planktothrix, Cyanobium and Microcystis and were found to be significantly abundant during summer and autumn. While cyanobacterial abundance soared in summer (25.4 %), dominated by Planktothrix (12.2 %) and Cyanobium (8.0 %), the diversity was highest in autumn (24.9 %) and consisted of Planktothrix (7.8 %), Nodularia (5.3 %), Planktothricoides (4.6 %), Microcystis (3.5 %), and Cyanobium (2.3 %). The strongly correlated non-photosynthetic Gastranaerophilales found in the sediment and water, suggested vertical transmission from the animal gut through faeces. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Planktothrix-driven toxic cyanobacterial bloom in Australia. Our study expands current understanding of the spatiotemporal variation in bacterial communities during a cyanobacterial bloom and sheds light on setting future management strategies for its control.

Seasonal and interannual responses of blue-green algal taxa and chlorophyll to a monsoon climate, flow regimes, and N:P ratios in a temperate drinking-water reservoir

Blooms of blue-green algae (BGA) threaten drinking water safety and ecosystems worldwide. Understanding mechanisms and driving factors that promote BGA proliferation is crucial for effective freshwater management. This study tested the response of BGA growth to environmental variations driven by nutrients (N and P), N:P ratios, and flow regime depending on the influence of the Asian monsoon intensity and identified the critical regulatory factors in a temperate drinking-water reservoir, using weekly interval samplings collected during 2017-2022. The hydrodynamic and underwater light conditions experienced significant changes in summers due to high inflows and outflows associated with intense rainfalls, and these conditions strongly influenced the proliferation of BGA and total phytoplankton biomass (as estimated by chlorophyll-a [CHL-a]) during summer monsoons. However, the intense monsoon resulted in the post-monsoon blooms of BGA. The monsoon-induced phosphorus enrichment, facilitated through soil washing and runoff, was crucial in promoting phytoplankton blooms in early post-monsoon (September). Thus, the monomodal phytoplankton peak was evident in the system, compared to the bimodal peaks in North American and European lakes. Strong water column stability in the weak monsoon years depressed phytoplankton growth and BGA, suggesting the importance of the intensity of monsoon. The low N:P ratios and longer water residence time increased BGA abundance. The predictive model of BGA abundance accounted for the variations largely (Mallows' Cp = 0.39, adjusted R2 = 0.55, p < 0.001) by dissolved phosphorus, N:P ratios, CHL-a, and inflow volume. Overall, this study suggests that monsoon intensity was the key triggering factor regulating the interannual BGA variations and facilitated the post-monsoon blooms through increased nutrient availability.

The Influence of Micronutrient Trace Metals on Microcystis aeruginosa Growth and Toxin Production

Microcystis aeruginosa is a widespread cyanobacteria capable of producing hepatotoxic microcystins. Understanding the environmental factors that influence its growth and toxin production is essential to managing the negative effects on freshwater systems. Some micronutrients are important cofactors in cyanobacterial proteins and can influence cyanobacterial growth when availability is limited. However, micronutrient requirements are often species specific, and can be influenced by substitution between metals or by luxury uptake. In this study, M. aeruginosa was grown in modified growth media that individually excluded some micronutrients (cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum) to assess the effect on growth, toxin production, cell morphology and iron accumulation. M. aeruginosa growth was limited when iron, cobalt and manganese were excluded from the growth media, whereas the exclusion of copper and molybdenum had no effect on growth. Intracellular microcystin-LR concentrations were variable and were at times elevated in treatments undergoing growth limitation by cobalt. Intracellular iron was notably higher in treatments grown in cobalt-deplete media compared to other treatments possibly due to inhibition or competition for transporters, or due to irons role in detoxifying reactive oxygen species (ROS).
