The Impact of Individuals' Attitudes Toward Health Websites on Their Perceived Quality of Health Information: An Empirical Study

Background: A growing number of patients have increasingly used health websites to search and gather health information. Nevertheless, few studies have focused on the driving factors of internet health information quality from the perspective of psychology. Accordingly, this study explores how the attitudes of individuals toward health websites affect their perceived quality of internet health information through the mediation of seeking behavior on treatment information by employing regulatory focus theory. Materials and Methods: We defined six hypotheses that both trust in health websites and expectancy of health websites have a positive impact on emerging and conservative treatment-related online health information seeking; emerging treatment seeking has a negative impact on internet health information quality; and conservative treatment seeking has a positive impact on internet health information quality. Emerging treatment refers to some therapies based on new technologies or research, which is barely used, whereas conservative treatment is more common among the medical field. An online survey involving 336 valid participants was conducted in China. In the research model, all variables were measured using multiple-item scales, and structural equation modeling was employed for testing the hypotheses. Results: The expectancy of health websites significantly affects conservative and emerging treatment-related online health information seeking, but trust in health websites does not. Moreover, trust in health websites strongly affects the expectancy of health websites, and attitudes toward health websites have a strong effect on conservative treatment-related online information seeking. The effect of conservative treatment-related online health information seeking was considerably larger than that of emerging treatment-related online health information seeking on perceived quality of internet health information. Conclusions: From the perspective of health websites operators and public hospitals, conservative treatment and online service might be worth providing and improving. Cooperation between health websites and hospitals might be a good choice.

Suggestions for health information technology trials for respiratory disorders in low- and middle-income country settings: what can we learn from trials in high-income country settings?

Health Information Technology (HIT) is sometimes seen as a silver bullet for human resource, medical and economic challenges facing health systems. The evidence supporting widespread use of HIT is, however, still patchy and inconsistent. In this Perspective piece, we seek to interpret and draw key lessons from a selection of illustrative trials in developed countries with robust health-care settings in respiratory medicine that failed to demonstrate effectiveness, and offer suggestions to maximise the chances of success in subsequent HIT deployments. Particularly low- and middle-income countries, with relatively weak health infrastructures and limited health care, propose considerable room for improvement. Early experiences of studying HIT thus far in high-income country settings suggest that this process should preferably begin with trials of low-cost, well-established technologies in patient groups with a moderate burden of disease while carefully evaluating patient safety.

Reflections on the implementation of governance structures for early-stage clinical innovation

OBJECTIVES

This paper seeks to further explore the question of how best to monitor and govern innovative clinical procedures in their earliest phase of development. We examine the potential value of proposed governance frameworks, such as the IDEAL model, and examine the functioning of a novel procedures review committee.

METHODS

The paper draws upon 20 qualitative, semi-structured interviews. Nine interviews were conducted with members of a committee that was established as a means of governing innovative procedures within a large National Health Service Foundation Trust hospital in the UK. Eleven interviews were conducted with health providers involved with the development of a variety of novel clinical procedures.

RESULTS

Prominent themes from the data include the potential willingness of clinicians to engage with regulatory frameworks for innovative procedures, existing ways in which clinicians and others attempt to ensure patient's safety and manage uncertainty in the context of novel procedures, views on the potential benefits and drawbacks of engaging with a review committee for novel procedures, and the pragmatic considerations and potential unintended consequences that are entailed in the implementation of regulatory requirements for the monitoring of innovative procedures.

CONCLUSIONS

The views of committee members and clinical innovators help us to understand the practical issues of implementing governance structures for novel clinical procedures. The data illustrate those factors that must be taken into account if governance is to support innovation rather than act as an inhibiting factor in the development of new clinical procedures.
