Conditions Underlying the Appearance of Spontaneous Otoacoustic Emissions in Mammals

Across the wide range of land vertebrate species, spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAE) are common, but not always found. The reasons for the differences between species of the various groups in their emission patterns are often not well understood, particularly within mammals. This review examines the question as to what determines in mammals whether SOAE are emitted or not, and suggests that the coupling between hair-cell regions diminishes when the space constant of frequency distribution becomes larger. The reduced coupling is assumed to result in a greater likelihood of SOAE being emitted.

A universal description of stochastic oscillators

Many systems in physics, chemistry, and biology exhibit oscillations with a pronounced random component. Such stochastic oscillations can emerge via different mechanisms, for example, linear dynamics of a stable focus with fluctuations, limit-cycle systems perturbed by noise, or excitable systems in which random inputs lead to a train of pulses. Despite their diverse origins, the phenomenology of random oscillations can be strikingly similar. Here, we introduce a nonlinear transformation of stochastic oscillators to a complex-valued function [Formula: see text](x) that greatly simplifies and unifies the mathematical description of the oscillator's spontaneous activity, its response to an external time-dependent perturbation, and the correlation statistics of different oscillators that are weakly coupled. The function [Formula: see text] (x) is the eigenfunction of the Kolmogorov backward operator with the least negative (but nonvanishing) eigenvalue λ1 = μ1 + iω1. The resulting power spectrum of the complex-valued function is exactly given by a Lorentz spectrum with peak frequency ω1 and half-width μ1; its susceptibility with respect to a weak external forcing is given by a simple one-pole filter, centered around ω1; and the cross-spectrum between two coupled oscillators can be easily expressed by a combination of the spontaneous power spectra of the uncoupled systems and their susceptibilities. Our approach makes qualitatively different stochastic oscillators comparable, provides simple characteristics for the coherence of the random oscillation, and gives a framework for the description of weakly coupled oscillators.

Gender differences in contralateral suppression of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions in individuals with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders

PURPOSE

The current study aims to evaluate gender variations in the efferent auditory system functioning in the ANSD population and compare them to normal hearing persons using contralateral suppression of spontaneous OAE (SOAEs).

METHODS

For the current study, a total of 54 ears were considered prospectively. 27 ears with normal hearing (NH) sensitivity were in group I, while 27 ears with ANSD were in group II. All of the subjects had a regular audiological examination followed by synchronised SOAE recordings with and without broadband noise (in the contralateral ear) at 50 dB SPL and statistical analysis was carried out.

RESULTS

Wilcoxon signed rank test revealed a significant decrease in SOAE amplitude with contralateral noise stimulation in NH, while no such trend was observed in ANSD. However, contralateral SOAE stimulation resulted in significant high-frequency shifts for both the ANSD and NH groups in the noise condition. In the comparison of gender effects on SOAE amplitude and frequency shifts using Mann-Whitney, no significant gender differences were seen. The lack of gender differences in SOAE suppression is explained based on global standing wave theory and local oscillator theory.

CONCLUSIONS

Contralateral effect of noise on SOAE shows frequency shifts, but not amplitude shifts both of which are not affected by gender effects.

Otoacoustic Emissions in Non-Mammals

Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) that were sound-induced, current-induced, or spontaneous have been measured in non-mammalian land vertebrates, including in amphibians, reptiles, and birds. There are no forms of emissions known from mammals that have not also been observed in non-mammals. In each group and species, the emission frequencies clearly lie in the range known to be processed by the hair cells of the respective hearing organs. With some notable exceptions, the patterns underlying the measured spectra, input-output functions, suppression threshold curves, etc., show strong similarities to OAE measured in mammals. These profound similarities are presumably traceable to the fact that emissions are produced by active hair-cell mechanisms that are themselves dependent upon comparable nonlinear cellular processes. The differences observed—for example, in the width of spontaneous emission peaks and delay times in interactions between peaks—should provide insights into how hair-cell activity is coupled within the organ and thus partially routed out into the middle ear.

Intermodulation distortions from an array of active nonlinear oscillators

Coupling is critical in nonlinear dynamical systems. It affects the stabilities of individual oscillators as well as the characteristics of their response to external forces. In the auditory system, the mechanical coupling between sensory hair cells has been proposed as a mechanism that enhances the inner ear's sensitivity and frequency discrimination. While extensive studies investigate the effects of coupling on the detection of a sinusoidal signal, the role of coupling underlying the response to a complex tone remains elusive. In this study, we measured the acoustic intermodulation distortions (IMDs) produced by the inner ears of two frog species stimulated simultaneously by two pure tones. The distortion intensity level displayed multiple peaks across stimulus frequencies, in contrast to the generic response from a single nonlinear oscillator. The multiple-peaked pattern was altered upon varying the stimulus intensity or an application of a perturbation tone near the distortion frequency. Numerical results of IMDs from a chain of coupled active nonlinear oscillators driven by two sinusoidal forces reveal the effects of coupling on the variation profile of the distortion amplitude. When the multiple-peaked pattern is observed, the chain's motion at the distortion frequency displays both a progressive wave and a standing wave. The latter arises due to coupling and is responsible for the multiple-peaked pattern. Our results illustrate the significance of mechanical coupling between active hair cells in the generation of auditory distortions, as a mechanism underlying the formation of in vivo standing waves of distortion signals.
